TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Customs surrounding the naming of ba-bies are interesting, and over time the Church has tried to offer some motherly advice to direct parents in this necessary chore. The ritual book used for baptism from the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth cen-turies advised priests to guard against giv-ing ridiculous or pagan names to babies consigned to their ministry. In 1666 the di-ocesan ritual of Bourges in France was even more exacting, telling the priests to see to it that boys were named after male saints, girls after female saints, and no one got named after a festival. Yet, records from that very diocese in later years shows a few babies named “Toussaint” (after All Saints Day) along with other creative expressions. In Spain, no one has ever hesitated to name babies after festivals, especially girls after Our Lady, and so there are names like Con-cepción, Asunción, and of course Dolores (after Our Lady of Sorrows). In Italy and Spain is it likely that a child will receive the name of the saint of the day of its birth. Today’s rites of initiation for adults and infants urge the giving of a Christian name, and in the case of an adult whose given name expresses a pagan or unseemly idea (Baal and Whiskey come to mind), there is a formal rite during the catechumenate for the giving of a Christian name. In such a case, it would make sense for the change to be registered with civil authorities as well. For all Christians, the idea of having a heavenly patron to pray to on life’s journey is reason enough to pay attention to this treasure in our tradition. —Rev. James Field

OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS

The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision the Church as the people of God. As a community of believers we are responsible for our brothers and sisters, their salva-tion, their journey of faith, their physical well-being. Many of the documents of Vatican II and vol-umes of work since the mid-1960s give us advice, guidelines, and en-couragement to take care of one an-other: the poor, the elderly, the un-born, the broken, the infirm. Because Vatican II is part of our recent history—indeed many of us were already born—this may strike us as a new and revolutionary idea. But today’s readings show us the agelessness of the issue of social justice. Eight hundred years before Christ was born, Amos warned the wealthy not to cheat the poor. In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he en-courages all prayers to be for all people; and finally, the Gospel urges the wise use of money.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

El santo Peruano Fray Juan Macías fue dominico. Este santo es reconocido como el amparo de los pobres, patrón de los emigran-tes y ladrón del purgatorio. El con-cepto del purgatorio es un poco difícil de entender. La Iglesia adoptó la creencia en la última pu-rificación de los elegidos (nombrado el Purgatorio) en los siglos XV y XVI en los concilios de Florencia y Trento. Ella se basa en las Escrituras que se refieren en la purificación en el fuego (1 Co-rintios 3:15; 1 Pedro 1:7) y en la práctica de la oración por los di-funtos como aparece en 2 Maca-beos 12:46 y Job 1:5. San Juan Crisóstomo dijo: “Si los hijos de Job fueron purificados por el sa-crificio de su padre, ¿porqué va-mos a dudar que nuestras oracio-nes por los difuntos puedan hacer-le llegar alguna consolación a los que han muerto? Ofrezcamos pues, nuestras oraciones por los difuntos. Los que están en purga-ción necesitan nuestro apoyo en la oración. Pidamos por ellos”. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz

SOMOS RESPONSABLES POR LOS DEMÁS

El Concilio Vaticano II nos ha llama-do a imaginar la Iglesia como el pueblo de Dios. Como una comunidad de cre-yentes somos responsables por nuestros hermanos, por su salvación, su peregri-nar en la fe, su bienestar físico. Muchos de los documentos del Concilio y volú-menes de trabajos desde mediados de la década del 60 nos dan consejos, guías y ánimo para ayudarnos unos a otros: a los pobres, a los ancianos, a los no naci-dos, a los quebrantados, a los enfermos. Porque el Concilio Vaticano II es parte de nuestra reciente historia –sin duda muchos de nosotros ya habíamos nacido– esto nos puede parecer una idea nueva y revolucionaria. Pero las lecturas de hoy nos muestran que las enseñanzas sobre justicia social han existido siempre. Ochocientos años an-tes de nacer Cristo, Amós advirtió a los ricos que no engañaran a los pobres. En la primera carta de Pablo a Timoteo, él insiste en que todas las oraciones sean por todos; y finalmente, el Evangelio enfatiza la importancia de usar sabia-mente el dinero.

¡ATENCIÓN! Cómo dejar y recoger a niños de doctrina Parents, please drop off and pick up your children just as you did

last year. The younger children will be dropped off/picked up closest to

the building, and the older children will be dropped off/picked up on the

other side, closer to the grass. The lines are there for everyone’s safety,

so please be patient with the cars ahead, as they may be giving way to

passing students. Also, parents and children may not cross the street for

any reason. Children will not be allowed to walk home, since there is no

way to ensure that they arrive home safely. If you are picking up another

child, please have a note from their parent that grants permission for you

to do so, simply to ensure their safety and that of ours. Thank you.
