Calling Elvis (Dire Straits)

This is the scale that Mark plays at the beginning of the solo.

I suggest you to hold the first three chords with your first finger, like a little barre`, at the 7th fret. This makes the scale easierto play.

Industrial Disease

[A]Intro [D] [E] [G] [D] [C] [Bm] [A]

[A]Now warning lights are flashing down in quality control.Somebody threw a spanner and they threw him in the hole.there's rumours in the loading bay and anger in the town.somebody blew the whistle and the walls came down. There's a [D]meeting in the boardroom, they're trying to trace the smell,[C][Bm]there's a [A]leaking in the washroom, there's a sneak in [D]Personnel.[E]Somewhere in a corridor someone was heard to sneeze.[A]Goodness me, goodness me, Industrial Disease!

[A]The caretaker was crucified for sleeping at his post,They're refusing to be pacified it's him they blame the most. The watchdog's got rabies, the foreman's got the fleas,And everyone's concerned about Industrial Disease. There's [D]panic on the switchboard, tongues are tied in knots.[C][Bm]Some [A]come out in sympathy some come out in spots,[E]Some blame the management some the employees.[A]And everypone knows it's the industrial disease

[A]Break [D] [E] [G] [D] [C] [Bm] [A]

[A]The workforce is disgusted, downs tools and walks.Innoncence is injured; experience just talks.Everyone seeks damages and everyone agreesThat these are "classic symptoms of a monetary squeeeze".On [D]ITV and BBC they talk about the curse.[C][Bm]Phil[A]osphy is useless, theology is worse,[E]History boils over, there's an economics freeze;[A]Sociologists invent words that mean "Industrial Disease"

[A]Doctor Parkinson declared "I'm not surprised to see you here. You've got smoker's cough from smoking, brewer's droop from drinking beer.I don't know how you came to get the Bette Davis knees, but worst of all young man you've got Industrial Disease"He [D]wrote me a prescription, he said "You are depressed,[C][Bm]but [A]I'm glad you came to see me to get this off your chest.[E]Come back and see me later -- next patient please![A]Send in another victim of Industrial Disease."

[A]Break [D] [E] [G] [D] [C] [Bm] [A]

I hope thats right... There may be variations in the Bass notes or the extranotes Mark drops in all the time. The B1 bit is tricky - The idea in the second part of the bar is to get thebass notes going along in the background to establish the rythm, while thehigh strings give the notes that run over top of it. I can bearly hear therythm notes, so they may not be right.

The bars are very rough attemps to indicate rythm, but I'm pretty surethey don't match. Anyway, tabs are pretty useless without the originalmusic, so who cares.

A ">" or "<" means the note following it should have no attack (stringbend, pull off, hammer on, slide, whatever). The timing indication(4'02") is taken from my CD player. :-)

Private InvestigationsTranscription by : Guillaume Laurent (except first intro solo by

Laurent Martinez)

First, a few precisions: this is an attempt of a transcription of thestudio version of P.I. Not everything of what he does is here (farfrom that), but it sounds nice when you play this along with therecord, or with a bunch a musician friends.

Besides, I'm completely deaf when it comes to figure out chords (even worsethan solos!), and I know that he often starts these little "phrases"by strumming a 3 or 4 notes chord, and then picks notes over it. So ifsuch "phrase beginnings" don't seem to match for you hear, and youhappen to find better ways to do them, please let me know!

Add on (22 Feb. 93) : The corrections I've added are precisely trying toimprove those "starts".

No notations tricks : a ">" means the note following should have noattack (i.e. slide it, hammer it, pull it, whatever!).

Romeo & JulietTranscriber: Timo Tattari ([email protected])(Some inspiration from the James Reese tab)

Guitar used: National Duolian, effects & amp unknown

Right, this is a beginners-only tabulature, not 100% transcriptbut easy to play, and even sounds like the real thing!

Tuning: NormalCapo: None X--5--5--5--5---5-3-0-1--1--1--0--1-3-5---------------6-------------------------------5------5------------3-------------- Repeat two times and on---------------------------------------- second time when you get to---------------------------------------- X jump to the tab below..----------------------------------------

--0--1--5-------3--6-------3--5-------3--7------------------------

And then play the song with the chords found on the James Reese tab (below)

This is the version that I figured out, after listening to the song about12,000 times. It's not nearly as rich as the one that Mark Knopfler does, but it certainly makes it recognizable. And it's fun to play. Anycorrections/additions are quite welcome.

Song: "Rome and Juliet"Group: Dire StraitsAlbum: Making Movies

The intro starts out with a D-structured F chord: strum and then pick outthe first three notes, then strum again. Next, pick the last three notesof the F chord and slide the picking down the E-string to a Bb chord:

F(D-struct) Bb (strum a few times)E---5------------------5-------------5--3--0-----1--------------------B---6----------6-------6----------6--------------3--------------------G---5-------5----------5-------5-----------------3--------------------D---7----7------------------------------------------------------------A---------------------------------------------------------------------E---------------------------------------------------------------------

Now pick on the E-string back up to the D-struct. F chord and pick thosefirst 3 notes again, then strum. Now quickly move to a downward sweep pickon the F chord barred at the first fret (plus the unfretted E-string note),which leads back to the Bb:

F(D-struct) F(barred,1st fret) Bb(strum...)--0h1--3----5----------------5------------------1-----0----1---------------------6----------6-----6---------------1--------------3---------------------5-------5--------5------------2-----------------3---------------------7----7---------------------3------------------------------------------------------------------3-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tablature.Supereva.It Pagina 34 di 60

Now it's back up the E-string to the D-struct F for more of the same(the rest of the band kicks in here and starts to obscure things).

This time on the way back up to the D-struct F we play the A and G noteson the E-string. Then do the D-struct F thing again, then do a quickdownward seep-pick on the open C chord, with the high G note added (1ststring at 3rd fret). An open E-string then leads to the Bb.Then it's up to the D-struct F for the start of the lyrics:

F(D-struct) Bb(strum/pick...)--5--3------5-------------5------------------3---0---1-------0h1--3--- etc------------6---------5---6---------------1----------3----------------------------5------6------5------------0-------------3----------------------------7---7-------------------2------------------------------------------------------------------3----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

F(Dstruct) Dm (open) C(open) F(1st fret)A lovestruck Romeo sings a streetsuss serenade

F(1st fret) C(open) Dm(open) BbLaying everybody low with the love song that he made

C(barre 3rd fret) Bb C(3rd fret) F(1st fret)Finds a streetlight Steps out of the shade, says something like

Bb C(3rd fret)you and me, babe, how about it?

Then add that nice little riff:

--0--0-------------------3--1----- Followed by strumming F(1st fret).--------------3--

F(1st fret) C(open) Dm(open)Juliet says, "Hey, it's Romeo! you nearly gave me a 'eart attack!"

C(open) F(1st fret) C(open) Dm(open) Bb He's underneath the window, she's singing "Hey la my boyfriend's back

C(3rd fret) Bb C(3rd fret) F(1st fret)Shouldn't come around here, singing up at people like that

Bb C(3rd fret) Anyway, what you gonna do about it?"

F(1st fret) C(3rd fret) Dm(5th fret) C(3rd fret) BbJuliet the dice was loaded from the start

C(3rd fret) F(1st fret) C(3rd fret) Dm(5th fret) C(3rd fret) BbAnd I bet and you exploded into my heart

C F C Bb Dm(open) BbAnd I forget, I forget, the movie song

Tablature.Supereva.It Pagina 35 di 60

Gm F Bb C B C F--3-- When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong, Juliet--3----3--

And now you can do the downward sweep-picking on the F(1st fret) to getto the Bb, then pick up the E-string to get to the D-struct F again. That'sabout it (at least, that's as much as I'm able to do).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------You get a shiver in the dark, it's raining in the park, but meantimeSouth of the river you stop and you hold everythingA band is blowing Dixie, double four timeYou feel alright when you hear that music ring

You step inside, but you don't see too many facesComing in out of the rain to hear the jazz go downToo much competition, from other placesBut not too many horns can make that sound

Way on downsouth, way on downsouth London town

You check out Guitar George; he knows all the chordsMind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or singAnd an old guitar is all he can affordWhen he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the sceneHe's got a daytime job he's doing alrightHe can play the honkytonk just like anythingSaving it up for friday night

With the Sultans, with the Sultans of Swing

And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the cornerDrunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform solesThey don't give a damn about any trumpet playing bandIt aint what they call Rock and Roll

And the Sultans played Creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphoneAnd says at last just as the time bell rings'Thankyou, goodnight; now it's time to go home'And he makes it fast with one more thing...

We are the Sultans, We are the Sultans of Swing
