We have just unveiled our 2014-2015 season and if you haven’t seen it, stop by, or rather, run immediately to one of the subscription renewal tables in the lobby. From Marius Petipa to Justin Peck, we are offering works from 1869 to 2014 by an incredible array of choreographic talent. People always ask me to choose my favorite works, and I refrain from answering because I have too many. I will say that the return of Alexei Ratmansky’s spectacular Don Quixote is a season highlight for me. And every time I see that we are doing an all-William Forsythe evening, I have to stop and pinch myself. Grab a brochure, check us out online, and reserve your tickets right now.

It was about a year ago that we announced this program and curiosity perked up its head. Audiences were wondering about Alejandro Cerrudo. Alejandro is not only an eye-catching dancer with Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, he’s also their resident choreog-rapher. Having created twelve works for the company and two for Ballet Arizona, with works in a half dozen companies around the world, you’d think he was kind of old. Wrong: young and charming, talented, too. He’s been a wonder to watch in the studio as he moves with quixotic ease around the room like a breeze. His work is fresh and clever, with a hint of humor, like the man himself. We are honored to have him create for PNB.

In 2009, Susan Stroman swooped into our studios for a few precious weeks to create a gem called TAKE FIVE…More or Less to the foot-tapping rhythms of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. The work starts with the idea that the really good stuff starts on the five-minute break, when dancers and musicians just start jammin’. Susan is all class and sass—a true pro. She created a perfect gift for our company without stepping on any toes. She’s a Broadway darling with five Tony Awards to date, and her latest venture, Bullets Over Broadway, has us thinking she might need to clear some more space on her mantel.

Molissa Fenley…a true phenomenon.

Susan Marshall shares a first name and a birthday with Susan Stroman, but little else. Her world is the cerebral. In Kiss, she gives us two ropes, two bodies in jeans and t-shirts, and raw, unadorned human emotion. The work stays with us long after the curtain descends. We see ourselves in it, complete with a perfect balance of awkwardness and beauty.

Completing the program is Molissa Fenley’s tour de force to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring: State of Darkness. Molissa is a true phenomenon. Having worked predominantly as a solo performer for most of her career, her collaborations with visual artists and composers have been legendary. Lighting designer David Moodey is her silent partner and every bit the artist in his own right. I had the pleasure of moonlighting with Molissa in New York’s downtown dance scene for about a decade, during which I performed four works of hers. Each was demanding and rewarding in its own way, but none more challenging than State of Darkness. My debut was on one of those August nights in New York at the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival in brutal humidity and record-breaking high temperatures. Even the audience was sweating! The work is a test of stamina but also of concentration and memorization. The heady swells, intricacies, and tantrums of Stravinsky’s score cycle through the performer’s body with intensity. Molissa herself was mind-boggling in the role.

These four works have no real connection, but each exemplifies the varied and rewarding effects of great chore-ography. For those of you who have been in the house since Peter Boal’s arrival at PNB, it’s delightful to revisit Susan Stroman’s brassy and sassy TAKE FIVE…More or Less; Molissa Fenley’s 36-minute, bravura solo, State of Darkness; and Susan Marshall’s Kiss. The works of renowned composers are the foundation for each of these pieces: Dave Brubeck, Igor Stravinsky, and Arvo Pärt, respectively, all played so notably by the Pacific Northwest Ballet Orchestra. It is only possible to bring these ballets to our stage, both initially and subsequently, with generous funding through PNB’s New Works Initiative. Ballet has many elements, but those familiar with the Company often think of individuals. It is my honor to say a few words about two very special members of the PNB family: first, the ever-brilliant Kaori Nakamura. She stuns us in the Phelps Center studios with her consistent work ethic, and in the halls with her complete professionalism. Once on stage,

she immediately puts us at ease with her confident technique. We will miss her deeply on stage, but we are thrilled that she will dedicate the next phase of her dance career to PNB School, assuring that under her guidance, our students will learn the equal importance of professionalism, work ethic, technique, and artistry.

Second, as we near the end of David Brown’s time as PNB’s executive director, it’s impossible for those of us who have worked closely with him not to re-live moments in our history when his leadership has made all the difference. They are too numerous to mention, but suffice it to say that his dedication to fiscal stability, his mastery of our operating plans, and his leadership in the broader arts community have had a great impact. I speak on behalf of all trustees, past and present, when I say that his retirement on June 30 leaves big shoes to fill. But the Board of Trustees is delighted to welcome to this role Ellen Walker, PNB’s current director of marketing and communications and incoming executive director, effective July 1. In addition to her strong working relationship with Peter Boal, Ellen and David have worked side by side for ten years. As we make the transition over the coming months, you will see Ellen more frequently in the front of the house. With her many years in marketing, she brings complete devotion to our patron and donor experience and is excited to meet each one of our supporters.

The 2008 world premiere of TAKE FIVE… More or Less was generously underwritten by Bruce & Jolene McCaw.

Peter Boal invited Tony Award-winning Broadway choreographer Susan Stroman to create a new work for the Company’s Laugh Out Loud! Festival in April 2008. She accepted and the result was TAKE FIVE…More or Less, an ensemble piece for eleven dancers set to the famous jazz scores of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond.

Stroman’s starting point was the idea that artists never really “take five.” Their art is always with them, even when they are asleep—witness the “nighttime” section of the ballet, featuring a ballerina dancing over the heads of the “sleeping” dancers.

Set to the profound, minimal music of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, Kiss is a brief yet mesmerizing aerial pas de deux that explores the balance of human love and emotion. Susan Marshall’s chore-ography sets two dancers suspended in harnesses above the stage floor. Dressed casually in street clothes, they move together, separate and return to one another in a series of gentle, sweeping movements that embody both the pleasure and torment of being in love.

Kiss was choreographed in 1987 during a residency at Jacob’s Pillow, Massachusetts, and was premiered that year in New York by Dance Theater Workshop. The Boston Herald referred to Kiss as “a case study for making the perfect aerial dance,” and the Oakland Tribune observed, “The miracle of the piece is that it captures in concrete dance terms the almost palpable feeling of swimming in love, of being suspended in eternity.”

The 2007 Pacific Northwest Ballet premiere of Molissa Fenley’s State of Darkness was generously underwritten by Lyndall Boal.

Molissa Fenley’s intensely dynamic solo, State of Darkness, is set to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Commissioned by the American Dance Festival, State of Darkness was first performed by Fenley herself, who received a Bessie Choreography award for her work. Peter Boal received a Bessie Performance award for his revival perfor-mance of State of Darkness in 2000.

Fenley writes: State of Darkness was choreographed in 1988. I had seen the Joffrey Ballet perform their reconstruction of Nijinsky’s original of Le Sacre du Printemps. I was completely taken with the music and went the next day to find a recording of the score. I ended up with an orchestral version performed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati, a recording that is unfortunately now out of print. I was just listening to the recording every day during my warm-up in the studio. This is a time when I’m dancing and performing exercises to keep my technical expertise maintained but also a time when I am, in a way, uncon-scious, not so much doing the exercises by rote, but by knowing what comes next in the series I have designed for myself, the imagination having a nice moment to free-float. I found myself adding things to the warm-up—deep shudderings in my torso and abdominals—and watching my body respond to the extremes of timpani and

strings. Soon enough, I realized I was choreo-graphing to the work—choreographing to the piece of music, not to the scenario devised by Nijinsky and Diaghilev.

“Using the textural basis of the score then became the method of entering into the music and knowing what to choreo-graph. I called the work State of Darkness for precisely the reason that I didn’t follow the scenario of the Rite of Spring: I followed an inner, intuitive voice that understood the music. Odd things would happen in the studio. It was in the winter and I like to work with no artificial light. In the shadows of the room, I would be sure that I was being visited by Nijinsky himself, who revealed that he had wished he had choreographed the entire work as a solo but hadn’t been allowed to. I knew there was the possibility for one person to take on the varying states of the music. I experimented with changing who I was while dancing—sometimes in the spirit world, sometimes in the animal world, sometimes in the present plane—constantly shifting personas in the dance—exiting a sense of ‘self ’ and becoming something ‘other’—being transported.

“To choreograph and perform this work as a soloist meant that I had to turn off a lot of the grumblings that were around me, some vocal people in the dance world who thought this undertaking was unbelievably arrogant. Besides, to follow a new career as a soloist meant to be diminutive to an ensemble form, a definite step in the wrong direction. In the subsequent years of performing the work as one woman on stage meant different things in different cultures. Throughout the world, most women felt it was very empowering for all women and supported my endeavors whole-heartedly. Some others, including some men, seemed to feel this was not the place for a woman. The costume for this work was a simple pair of black tights. I would appear androgynous to some— a small, yet strong body with short hair.

“State of Darkness had many passages choreographed around the idea of fear, entering into the shadows, delighting in an animal presence, shifting from being extremely powerful to being totally out of control—a dialogue with the music, sometimes auguring what happens next in the score, preceding rhythmic changes and accents before they would happen to being responsive to accent changes after their occurrence—very direct give-and-take from score to choreography. It was choreographed with belief in the ‘rightness’ of it, belief in the truth of the body in music and, yes, I would pray to ‘my buddy Igor’ that I would

Susan StromanChoreographer, TAKE FIVE…More or Less

A five-time Tony Award-winning Broadway director and choreographer, Susan Stroman has been has been honored with the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, Astaire,

and Lucille Lortel Awards. She is a recipient of the George Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement in the American Theater. For New York City Ballet she created Double Feature, a full-length ballet featuring the music of Irving Berlin and Walter Donaldson, and For the Love of Duke, featuring the music of Duke Ellington. For the Martha Graham Company she created the ballet But Not For Me. She directed and choreographed The Producers, winner of a record-making 12 Tony Awards, including Best Direction and Best Choreography. She co-created, directed, and choreographed the groundbreaking musical Contact for Lincoln Center Theater. Other Broadway credits include The Scottsboro Boys, Big Fish, Oklahoma!, Young Frankenstein, Thou Shalt Not, The Music Man, The Frogs,

Steel Pier, Big, Show Boat, and Crazy for You. Off-Broadway credits include Happiness, And the World Goes ’Round, and Flora the Red Menace. For ten years she choreographed Madison Square Garden’s annual spectacular, A Christmas Carol. Her choreography received an Emmy nomination for the HBO presentation of Liza Minnelli Live From Radio City Music Hall. She received the American Choreography Award for her work in the Columbia Pictures feature film Center Stage. She directed and choreographed The Producers: The Movie Musical, nominated for 4 Golden Globes. TAKE FIVE…More or Less is Ms. Stroman’s first work for Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Dave BrubeckComposer, Blue Rondo a la Turk and Strange Meadow Lark

Jazz legend Dave Brubeck founded the experimental Jazz Workshop Ensemble, which recorded in 1949 as the Dave Brubeck Octet. In 1958, Brubeck and his colleagues achieved overwhelming popular success as the Dave Brubeck Quartet. The Quartet’s experimentation with time signatures unusual to jazz produced works like Blue Rondo a la Turk and Take Five, introducing millions of enthusiastic young listeners to unexplored regions of jazz.

Paul DesmondComposer, Take Five

Paul Desmond (1924-1977), San Francisco-born jazz alto saxophonist and composer, is best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet and for penning that group’s greatest hit, Take Five. Known for his idiosyncratic wit, Desmond was one of the most popular musicians to come out of the West Coast’s “cool jazz” scene.

Ian EisendrathGuest Conductor, TAKE FIVE… More or Less

Ian Eisendrath graduated from the University of Michigan in 2003, with a degree in conducting musical theater and choral repertoire and where he was music director for multiple projects at the Ann Arbor Festival of New Works. This opportunity led him to the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, where he served as a music director and dramaturge on multiple new musicals. Mr. Eisendrath has conducted three seasons of the Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Nutcracker and been the music director for Cabaret at American Theatre of San Jose, Ordway Center in St. Paul, and Theatre Under the Stars in Houston.

Susan MarshallChoreographer, Kiss

As artistic director of Susan Marshall & Company, Marshall has, since 1985, created over 40 dances on her company, and has also created works for the Lyon Opera Ballet,

Frankfurt Ballet, and Mikhail Baryshnikov. Marshall’s work with Philip Glass includes the stage direction of “Book of Longing,” a song cycle based on the poetry of Leonard Cohen; and the choreography, direction and co-adaptation of “Les Enfants Terribles,” a dance opera based on the work of Jean Cocteau. Marshall has also choreographed/directed the music ensembles Eighth Blackbird and Bang on a Can’s Asphalt Orchestra. A 2000 recipient of a MacArthur fellowship, Marshall has received numerous other awards, including three New York Dance and Performance Awards (BESSIES) for Outstanding Choreographic Achievement, a Dance Magazine Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and was one of the first artists to receive an American Choreographer Award. In addition to her own company’s work, Marshall serves as Director of Dance at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts, having assumed that post in September 2009.

Arvo Pärt Composer, Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten

Composer Arvo Pärt was born in Estonia in 1935. He trained at the Tallinn Music Middle School, but left to fulfill military service, playing oboe and percussion in the army band. He graduated from Tallinn Conservatory in 1963, having worked as a student and afterward as a recording engineer for Estonian Radio. His early neoclassical works show the influence of Shostakovich, Prokofiev, and Bartok followed, in the 1960s, by compositions using Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique and serialism, a musical style so unpopular with the Soviet establishment that it brought Pärt to a creative crisis. His response was total immersion in early music: plainsong, Gregorian chant, and the emergence of polyphony in the Renaissance. The radically different music that emerged after this period was described

by the composer as “tintinnabular,” like the ringing of bells. In 1976, he unveiled this method with the piano work, Für Alina. A trio of more popular works followed in 1977, Fratres, Cantus In Memory of Benjamin Britten (revised 1980), and Tabula Rasa. Owing to continued political oppression in Estonia, Pärt and his family emigrated to the West in 1980, settling first in Vienna, then in West Berlin. After this period, he wrote a number of large-scale choral religious works, including the St. John Passion (1982), Magnificat (1989), The Beatitudes (1990), and Litany (1994). In 1995, Part was recognized for his artistic achievements by being elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He remains among the most popular serious composers of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Allan DameronCompany Pianist/Conductor Solo Pianist, TAKE FIVE…More or Less

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Allan Dameron graduated from North Carolina School of the Arts and studied conducting at the Pierre Monteux School in Maine. Mr.

Dameron has been Music Director and Conductor for Chicago City Ballet and Assistant Conductor at Chicago Lyric Opera. Prior to joining PNB he was a chamber music professor at Northern Illinois University. As a chamber music pianist, Mr. Dameron has been a guest artist with the Vermeer and Audubon Quartets and is a member of Ariel Trio. Mr. Dameron performs piano solo work for PNB ballets, including Dual Lish, Duo Concertant, Für Alina, and Rubies.

Molissa FenleyChoreographer, State of Darkness

Choreographer Molissa Fenley was born in Las Vegas, Nevada and lived in Nigeria and Spain during her youth. She returned to the U.S. in 1971, earning a Bachelor of Arts from Mills College in

Oakland, California in 1975. That same year, she moved to New York City and founded Molissa Fenley and Company in 1977. Her body of work, over 75 dances in total, has been presented throughout the U.S., South

America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. She has received commissions from American Dance Festival, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow, and Lincoln Center among many others. Recent works include Found Object with text by John Guare, Joy Harjo, and Rudy Wurlitzer; The Vessel Stories, with music by Philip Glass; Credo in Us, with music by John Cage; Cross Bridge: a collaboration with Holley Farmer, John Jesurun, David Moodey, and Rosemary Quinn; and Dance an Impossible Space. She has created numerous works for ballet and contemporary dance companies, including Robert Moses’ Kin, Repertory Dance Theater, Peter Boal and Company, Australian Dance Theatre, Deutsche Oper Ballet, and Seattle Dance Project; her dances have been performed by Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, Elisa Monte and David Brown, and Peggy Baker Dance Projects among others. Fenley received a New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Award for Choreography for Cenotaph (1985) and State of Darkness (1988). Her awards include the NEA American Masterpieces Initiative for the reconstruction of egions (1995). She is a Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, a Fellow of the Bogliasco Foundation, a Master Artist of the Atlantic Center of the Arts, and a Professor of Dance at her alma mater, Mills College.

Igor StravinskyComposer, State of Darkness

Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was one of the most authoritative composers of the twentieth century, both in the West and in his native land. A quintessentially cosmopolitan Russian, Stravinsky was born and raised near St. Petersburg and entered law school in 1901, at the age of nineteen. That year he also gave his first piano recital and began studying piano and composition with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. In 1910, Stravinsky came to the attention of Serge Diaghilev, who asked him to orchestrate two pieces by Chopin for the ballet Les Sylphides, and then to compose an original ballet. The result, Firebird, projected both Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and the young composer to worldwide acclaim. Stravinsky went on to master musical styles ranging from Romanticism to Neoclassicism to Serialism and was regarded as one of the great musical innovators of his age. His broad oeuvre ranges from symphonies to piano miniatures. Stravinsky’s ballets for the Ballets Russes also included Petrushka, choreographed by Michel Fokine, The Rite of Spring, choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky,

and Apollon Musagète (later called Apollo), choreographed by George Balanchine. The composer’s long artistic relationship with Balanchine resulted in several commissioned ballet scores—Jeu de Cartes (1936), Orpheus (1947) and Agon (1953-1957)—and many ballets choreographed to existing works. Stravinsky also achieved fame as a pianist and conductor, often conducting the premieres of his own works. With the help of his protégé Robert Craft, he wrote a theoretical work entitled Poetics of Music. In it, he famously claimed that music was incapable of “expressing anything but itself.” Craft also transcribed several interviews with the composer. Stravinsky was named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people of the twentieth century.

Alejandro CerrudoChoreographer, World Premiere

Born in Madrid, Spain, choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo received his training at the Real Conservatorio Professional de Danza de Madrid. After becoming a professional dancer in 1998 Cerrudo’s

dance career has been shaped and enriched by various companies including Victor Ullate Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Nederlands Dance Theater 2 and, since 2005, by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. In 2008, Mr. Cerrudo was named Hubbard Street Choreographic Fellow and became the company’s first Resident Choreographer in 2009. He has created several works for Hubbard Street and for the company’s unique collaborations with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Nederlands Dance Theater. Mr. Cerrudo’s works are performed by dance companies around the U.S. and the world, including Germany, Denmark, The Nederlands, and Australia. Always dancing and constantly creating, Mr. Cerrudo was honored with an award from The Boomerang Fund for Artists in 2011. This is Alejandro Cerrudo’s first work for Pacific Northwest Ballet.

Randall G. ChiarelliResident Lighting DesignerLighting Designer, World Premiere

Randall G. Chiarelli served as PNB’s lighting designer and technical director from 1979 to 2005. He served as technical director of San Francisco Ballet from 2005 to 2006 and

returned to PNB in November 2006. He has created the lighting designs for most of PNB’s repertory, including the Stowell & Sendak Nutcracker, Kent Stowell’s full-length Swan Lake, Firebird, The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Carmina Burana, Cinderella, and Carmen, and re-created the lighting designs for PNB’s entire Balanchine repertory, including PNB’s 2010 premiere of George Balanchine’s Coppélia. His scenic designs for PNB include Les Biches, Divertimento No. 15, Capricious Night, and Carmen. Student and apprentice to pioneer lighting designer Thomas R. Skelton, Mr. Chiarelli is a Seattle native and received painting and sculpture degrees from the University of Washington.

PNB APPOINTS ELLEN WALKER AS INCOMING EXECUTIVE DIRECTORIn January, Aya Hamilton, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Pacific Northwest Ballet and Chair of the Executive Search Committee, announced the appointment of Ellen Walker to the Executive Director position at PNB. 2014 NEXT STEP CHOREOGRAPHERS ANNOUNCED

On Friday, June 13, seven members of the Company will present six brand new works onstage at McCaw Hall. Angelica Generosa and Jahna Frantziskonis will collaborate on their choreographic debut, and Matthew Renko will also create his first work for the showcase. Ezra Thompson and Price Suddarth, regular contributors to the annual choreographic showcase, will each create a new work for the program. Andrew Bartee and Margaret Mullin, who both contributed new works to the Company’s repertory with the ALL PREMIERE program in 2012, will return as NEXT STEP choreographers this year. PNB School Professional Division students will be the featured performers in this annual celebration of emerging talent and new works.

Peter Boal Artistic Director of Pacific Northwest Ballet and Director of PNB School

Peter Boal assumed artistic directorship of Pacific Northwest Ballet and PNB School in 2005 following a 22-year career as a dancer with New York City Ballet. In addition to working

with George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Peter Martins, Mr. Boal originated roles in over 30 new works. He received his training at the School of American Ballet, joined New York City Ballet in 1983, and was promoted to principal dancer in 1989. From 1997 to 2005, he was a full-time faculty member at SAB. In 2004 he founded Peter Boal and Company, a critically acclaimed chamber ensemble. In 1996 Mr. Boal received the Dance Magazine Award, and in 2000 he received a New York Dance and Performance Award.

Emil de CouMusic Director/Principal Conductor

Emil de Cou was named Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Music Director and Principal Conductor at the start of the 2011-2012 season. Previously, he was associate conductor

of the National Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the NSO performances at Wolf Trap Festival. Mr. de Cou debuted at Carnegie Hall as guest conductor for the New York Pops, and has also conducted the orchestras of Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Saint Louis, Detroit, Montreal, and Boston Pops, among others. He was Principal Pops Conductor for the San Francisco Symphony and served as musical consultant for NASA. In 1985, Mikhail Baryshnikov hired Mr. de Cou to conduct American Ballet Theatre and in 1994, he joined the staff of San Francisco Ballet. Other ballet companies he has conducted include New York City Ballet, National Ballet of Canada, Netherlands Dance Theatre, and Hong Kong Ballet. Mr. de Cou was born in Los Angeles and studied at the University of Southern California. He was the subject of a documentary on National Public Radio and was chosen from 200 candidates to study in Leonard Bernstein’s master class at the Hollywood Bowl.

Norbert HerrigesTechnical Director

Norbert Herriges began working in Seattle theater after receiving his degree in Theatre Arts at Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, Oregon. In 1984, he started at ACT

as a scenic builder and in 1991 moved to Seattle Repertory Theatre, where he worked for fifteen years as a shop carpenter and later as Scenic Coordinator. In the course of his 28-year career in local theater, Mr. Herriges worked backstage for PNB in various capacities. He was appointed Interim Technical Director for PNB in February 2011 and assumed the position of Technical Director in July of 2011. Mr. Herriges oversees and coordinates all technical aspects of PNB’s productions, assisted by an exceptional staff of stage technicians and managers.

Larae Theige HascallCostume Shop Manager

Born in Spokane, Washington, Larae Hascall joined PNB in 1983 and became Costume Shop Manager in 1987. She supervises the creation, alteration, and maintenance of all

costumes worn in PNB productions. Her own costume designs include Kent Stowell’s Dual Lish, Quaternary, Duo Fantasy, Orpheus Portrait, and Carmen, as well as designs for guest choreographers Donald Byrd and Lynn Daly. She has been the primary collaborator for costumes created by such renowned designers as Paul Tazewell (Swan Lake, Seven Deadly Sins), Martin Pakledinaz (A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Cinderella, Ballet Imperial), Theoni V. Aldredge (Carmina Burana), and David Murin (Silver Lining).

Otto NeubertBallet Master

Otto Neubert has been PNB’s Ballet Master since 1991. Born in Munich, Germany, Mr. Neubert received his training with Alex Ursuliak, the Stuttgart Ballet School, the

School of American Ballet, and with Marika Besobrasova in Monte Carlo. He danced as a soloist with New York City Ballet and at Stuttgart Ballet. Mr. Neubert assists the Artistic Director in teaching and rehearsing the Company, and rehearses PNB School students in their roles for Nutcracker and other productions. He has performed as a guest artist in The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, and Prodigal Son.

Anne DabrowskiBallet Master

Anne Dabrowski was named a PNB Ballet Master in 1997. Originally from San Diego, California, Ms. Dabrowski received her training at California Ballet School and with

Truman Finney at the School of Hartford Ballet. She danced professionally with Hartford Ballet and then continued there as Company Teacher and Assistant Ballet Master, and as a principal faculty member for Hartford Ballet School. Ms. Dabrowski assists the Artistic Director in teaching and rehearsing the Company and prepares PNB School students for their roles in Nutcracker and other PNB productions.

Paul GibsonBallet Master

Paul Gibson was appointed a PNB Ballet Master in 2005. Mr. Gibson joined PNB in 1994 and was promoted to Principal dancer in 1996. Upon his retirement in 2004,

he was named Assistant Ballet Master. His choreographic work includes ballets for PNB and PNB School, San Francisco Ballet School, the San Francisco Ballet Choreographic Workshop, Allegheny Ballet Company, and the New York Choreographic Institute. Originally from Altoona, Pennsylvania, Mr. Gibson trained at Allegheny Ballet Academy and the School of American Ballet. He won a scholarship at San Francisco Ballet School and joined San Francisco Ballet in 1988, where he rose to the rank of soloist. Mr. Gibson assists the Artistic Director in teaching, rehearsing, and the scheduling the Company and rehearsing PNB School students in their roles for Company productions.

Batkhurel Bold is from Ulan Bator, Mongolia. He joined PNB in 1996 and was promoted to soloist in 1999 and principal in 2004.

Jonathan Porretta is from Totowa, New Jersey. He joined PNB as an apprentice in 1999 and was promoted to soloist in 2002 and principal in 2005. Mr. Porretta has also danced with Dances Patrelle in New York.

Carrie Imler* is from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She joined PNB as an apprentice in 1995 and was promoted to soloist in 2000 and principal in 2002.

Lesley Rausch* is from Columbus, Ohio. She joined PNB as member of the corps de ballet in 2001, was promoted to soloist in 2007 and principal in 2011.

Karel Cruz is from Havana, Cuba. He joined PNB as a corps de ballet member in 2002 and was promoted to soloist in 2007 and principal in 2009. Mr. Cruz also danced with Ballet Nacional de Cuba and in Venezuela with Ballet Clasico de Camara and Teatro Teresa Carreno.

Kaori Nakamura is from Gumma, Japan. She joined PNB as a soloist in 1997 and was promoted to principal in 1998. Ms. Nakamura was formerly a principal dancer with Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Rachel Foster is from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 2002. She was promoted to soloist in 2008 and principal in 2011. Ms. Foster has also danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Seth Orza is from San Francisco, California. He joined PNB as a member of the corps de ballet in 2007, was promoted to soloist in 2008 and principal in 2010. Mr. Orza was formerly a soloist with New York City Ballet.

Maria Chapman* is from Macon, Georgia. She joined PNB as an apprentice in 1995 and was promoted to soloist in 2005 and principal in 2009.

Carla Körbes is from Porto Alegre, Brazil. She joined PNB as a soloist in 2005 and was promoted to principal in 2006. Ms. Körbes was formerly a soloist with New York City Ballet.

Lindsi Dec* is from Fairfax, Virginia. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2001, and was promoted to soloist in 2009, and principal in 2014.

James Moore is from San Francisco, California. He joined PNB as a member of the corps de ballet in 2004, was promoted to soloist in 2008, and principal in 2013. Mr. Moore also danced with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Laura Tisserand* is from Hammond, Louisiana. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as an apprentice in 2003 and was promoted to corps de ballet in 2004, soloist in 2010, and principal in 2014.

Jerome Tisserand is from Lyon, France. He joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 2007 and was promoted to soloist in 2012. Mr. Tisserand also danced with Miami City Ballet.

Benjamin Griffiths* is from Boise, Idaho. He joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet in 2005 and was promoted to soloist in 2008. Mr. Griffiths also danced with Boston Ballet.

Elizabeth Murphy*is from Chelmsford, Massachusetts. She joined Pacific Northwest Ballet as a corps de ballet member in 2011 and was promoted to soloist in 2014. Ms. Murphy also danced with North Carolina Dance Theater, Pennsylvania Ballet, and Ballet West.

Now in its 9th year of operation, Teen Tix provides Seattle-area teenagers with access to over 40 arts organizations in an effort to engage young people in Seattle’s vibrant cultural scene. Teen Tix members can purchase day-of-show tickets to music, dance, theater, and arts events for only $5.
