School Drug Education and Road Aware School Drug Education and Road Aware (SDERA) is the WA State Government’s primary drug and road safety education strategy for all government and nongovernment schools, and early childhood services. SDERA is a cross-sectoral initiative of the Association of Independent Schools of WA (AISWA), the Catholic Education WA (CEWA) and Department of Education (DOE) and is funded by the Mental Health Commission and the Road Trauma Trust Account.

SDERA aims to prevent road-related injuries and the harms from drug use in children and young people. SDERA empowers early childhood and school-based staff, parents and carers, and community groups to implement effective resilience, drug and road safety education approaches within their schools and community, through the provision of professional learning, evidence-based resources, and a state-wide consultancy team.

School drug education provides an opportunity for young people to build resilience, increase their knowledge, and develop skills to make safer decisions relating to alcohol and other drugs (AOD).

A safe and supportive school environment is a protective factor for young people against a range of health-related risks including drug use.

INTRODUCTION

WHY TEACH DRUG EDUCATION IN SCHOOLS?

About ConnectConnect directs school communities to resilience and drug education resources and support services that can complement and extend a school’s drug education initiatives. Schools are encouraged to use the resources and community based service agencies included within Connect as part of their whole-school approach to drug education.

Drug education:

• presentsyoungpeoplewith credible and relevant information about drugs, their use and possible consequences

• buildsresilienceinyoungpeople by developing their knowledge, self-awareness and self-management skills

• assistsyoungpeopleinexploring their attitudes to drugs, drug use and people who use drugs

• promotesresponsibilityin considering the ways in which drugs are used today

reduce the risk of harm from their own or someone else’s drug use

• enablesempowermentso young people can positively influence their own lifestyles

• providesinterventionthrough appropriate action and support by staff members when a student drug use incident or issue arises.

A strong component of drug education is the focus on the development of social and emotional skills. These skills are paramount to the overall health and wellbeing of young people and should be taught across all ages with age appropriate teaching and learning strategies and content. Developing social and emotional skills can promote resilience and may reduce potential risks of harm from drug use in the future.

Drug education should be provided before problematic behavioural patterns become established and more resistant to change.

“WHY START DRUG EDUCATION EARLY?

EXPLORING THE YEARSTHE EARLY YEARS0-8 YEARSDrug education needs to begin and continue in the home. Modelling healthy behaviour is a protective factor which can have a positive influence on the way children think and behave. As children age they may experience initial exposure to drugs such as analgesics, caffeine and tobacco. Providing best practice drug education assists school staff and parents to develop awareness and foster resilience in the children in their care. This can improve learning and health outcomes and may be a protective factor against drug use in the future.

EXPLORING THE YEARSTHE MIDDLE YEARS 9-12 YEARS

Providing effective drug education allows students to gain awareness and understanding of ways to stay safer around drugs to which they may be exposed such as analgesics, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol. Offering drug education when student use and exposure to drugs is low, allows the facts and realities to be explored when positive attitudes to drugs and their use are less likely to have been developed.

Nurturing resilience is a key component of drug education and can have a positive impact on students’ health outcomes. Continuing to build resilience through drug education may serve to reduce potential risks of harm to students and others in current or future drug-related situations.

EXPLORING THE YEARSTHE TEEN YEARS13-18 YEARSProvision of effective drug education in early and late adolescence may help students to continue to develop and apply skills and strategies learned in the classroom to their own lives. Tune In Not Out is a national pod cast service for young people aged 16-25. It recognises the use of alcohol and other drugs is sometimes interlinked with many other aspects of a young person’s life including self-esteem, stress, education and relationships. Created by and for young people, it aims to help young people make safer decisions about alcohol and other drugs.
