After seven years on Council, and six years of service as Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree, Geoff Kettle will not be seeking re-election this September. Geoff was first elected in June 2009, and became Mayor in September 2010. Geoff has been a tireless campaigner for Goulburn Mulwaree, engaging with business, politicians and industry to promote Goulburn’s competitive advantages. As Mayor, Geoff has been heavily involved in countless major projects for Goulburn Mulwaree, including being the Chair of the Highlands Source Project Working Group which oversaw the delivery of the Highlands Source Pipeline in 2008; guaranteeing a reliable water supply for Goulburn in times of drought. Geoff is also known as a tireless community man, who was always available to the community for discussion and questioning on any issue. As Mayor, Geoff has been easily accessible and a man of the people – no issue was too big or too small. He has been a strong supporter of community groups throughout the region, helping them to gain funding for projects and apply for grants which are essential for these small volunteer led organisations. Another key to his successful Local Government career has been his strong relationship with Emergency services, the Police and Schools within the region. Geoff maintained frequent contact with these groups, and was a regular attendee at functions. Geoff has also been incredibly popular with the younger generation at concerts, presentation nights and special events, and he has no doubt left a positive impact on future generations of the Goulburn Mulwaree community. In his past four year term Geoff has been a tireless advocate for many projects in Goulburn Mulwaree that will become features of the region for decades to come; including the Wollondilly River Walkway, Waste Water Treatment Plant upgrade, Aquatic Centre redevelopment and the Performing Arts Centre.

Mayor Geoff Kettle Leaves a Lasting Positive Impact

Geoff is a member of the Tallong Community Focus Group, International Police Association, Trustee on the Veolia Mulwaree Trust and Board Member on the Southern NSW Local Health District Board. He also created and chaired a Coalition of Councils between Sydney & Melbourne (including the ACT Government) to lobby both State and Federal Government for the implementation of High Speed Rail along the east coast of Australia, and is still currently an energetic campaigner for this project. Goulburn Mulwaree Council would like to formally thank Geoff Kettle for his service over the past seven years, and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Every month when I write an article about the CWA I am thinking: “How come not every single lady from Marulan is a member of the CWA Marulan?” What’s not to love: we are fun, we do good things for the community and we always have tasty food! For example, at our most recent meeting we started with our morning tea with hot piping tea and freshly made lemon cake. I know, sounds good already, if you ask me! Then we made about a dozen aprons with the logo of the Kite Festival. We support our community in every possible way we can and sewing aprons for the Kite Festival’s volunteers in one of them. The annual Marulan Kite Festival is a great event that you don’t want to miss out on, all the CWA ladies are going to be there for sure! On the weekend of October 29th – 30th there will be an interactive program from organisers of this annual festival including Devonshire Tea provided by the Marulan CWA ladies. After the morning tea and craft, we always have the official functions of reports, any correspondence and planning for the next month. We have been quietly pleased with our achievements for the first six months of 2016, however we are always looking to expand and grow with even more success.

So if you want to be involved in an active and rewarding social community, please come to our monthly events. 2016 is the year of Mongolia for the entire national CWA. With this in mind, the local CWA is organising an International Day on the 3rd September. We will be screening the classic 1956 movie “The Conqueror” starring John Wayne as “Genghis Khan” and co-starring Susan Hayward. We will be serving a delicious Devonshire Tea and there will be a raffle and lucky door prizes. All are welcome! Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday the 21st of September at 1pm and new members are always welcome. Meanwhile, should you have a function coming up and would you like some help with catering, we would be happy to provide for your function with finger food, cakes, and drinks. You can contact Sue Montgomery via phone on 0248410288. Feel free to visit our website cwamarulan.org and page on @cwamarulan. Marulan Public School

Chess Success Last Wednesday Tay, PJ and Deane competed in the prestigious Tudor House Chess Tournament against students from public and private school students from across the area. Last year our team was pleased to come second in this competition and this year the boys went one better winning the whole tournament in a thrilling final against Crookwell Public School. The boys were complimented by staff from other schools not only on their fabulous chess skills but their wonderful attitude and conduct. They look forward to competing at the State finals in Sydney on 27th November. Congratulations Chess Team! Book Week Parade During Book Week, we held our annual book week parade, assembly and Book Fair. Students came to school dressed as their favourite character from a book. The P&C also ran a food stall selling tea and coffee in the community room after the parade. Thank you to all for the donations of cakes and slices. Canberra Excursion On Wednesday 31st August students in 2/3 and 4/5 traveled to Canberra to visit Questacon as part of their Science and Technology studies for the term. On Thursday 1st September, students in 5/6 traveled to Goulburn for a Council4Kids workshop at Goulburn Mulwaree Council, followed by a visit to the art gallery. This excursion supported the students’ studies in civics and citizenship and the visual arts. P&C Father’s Day Stall The P&C held its Father’s Day stall for students to purchase gifts for this day. This was well attended and we thank everyone for there assistance. All monies raised from this event has gone towards the purchase of another set of notebooks for students. Canteen Don’t forget that the Marulan Country Women’s Association canteen is run every Friday. A different menu is offered each week.

Jackson Fever On the last Tuesday of Term, 20th September, the whole school will be performing as part of our musical production, Jackson Fever. The show has been devised by students and staff and features the music of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5. There will be spectular sound and lighting facilities, kindly borrowed from Bradforville Public School. The show will be performed at the Bradfordville Public School Hall. The school will travel to Bradfordville during the day to rehearse and return with their parents and families for a performance commencing at 6pm. We are anxious to hear from any parents who may be able to help with building sets or costumes. Playground Development Miss Jago is working on a plan to build a fabulous three dimensional car track for our playground. If anyone has some large rocks to donate (or is able to lend a trailer to pick up donated rocks) please contact the office.

Marulan Historical Society Our dedicated members have been extremely busy since the opening of our Archive and Research Centre in May. Each Monday morning they meet at 10.00am and sort through the mountains of historical material that has been donated and collected from our district. As there is so much material that we are in the process of applying for grants to build on a further two bays for storage. Fundraising, which is still in the planning stage, will include an historical bus trip to the old inns in the district culminating in lunch at the Goulburn Brewery and an evaluation day (the Marulan Antiques Roadshow) where people can bring along their treasures for valuation. Watch this space for further times and dates. Our society meets on the second Thursday of each month in the Uniting Church Hall, at 1.00pm. The Annual General meeting of the Society will be held on the 8th September and all executive positions will be open for nomination. Members are also reminded that annual fees will become due on that date. For any further information, please contact Sue Montgomery on 48410288. Article submitted by Sue Montgomery, Secretary Marulan Historical Society Club.

Marulan Garden Club Our September meeting will be held on 6th September, 10.00am at the Uniting Church Hall in Marulan. Carolyn is very keen for us to make large paper flowers to brighten up our stall on Kite Day. She tells me that it is exceptionally easy and will do samples for us to follow. We are hoping that everyone has been busy potting up plants for sale. If each member brings along at least six potted plants on Kite Day we should have a great selection for sale. As the Tulip Farm at Sutton is not open until mid September, information on dates etc. for our visit will be provided at the meeting. The Spring Floral Display will be on at David Jones in the city from the 1st until 11th September, so if anyone is interested in traveling up to Sydney by train on 1st September, please contact me on 48410288. The Marulan Garden Club is a very friendly group, so if you would like to come along to one of our very informal meetings (followed by morning tea at the Marulan Bakery where the coffee, delicious treats and hospitality are second to none) please feel free to join us. For more information please contact Carolyn Hale on 48410555 or Sue Montgomery on 48410288. Article submitted by Sue Montgomery, Treasurer Marulan Garden Club.

Marulan Lions Club Every day in Australia around 350 people are told they have a life-threatening cancer. The survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30% in the last two decades, but we still have a long way to go. For almost twenty years the Marulan Lions Club has been supporting Cancer Council Australia’s, Daffodil Day that raises money for this much needed cancer research. Members and friends again this year had another successful day selling Daffodil Day products at both BP service centres, Truckstop 31 and outside the Marulan Shopping Centre in August. We would like to thank the businesses that had become involved with us and also the many volunteers who helped us on the day. This is one of many projects the Lions Club of Marulan & District is involved in, so if you can spare a couple of hours each fortnight we would love to hear from you. For more information contact Marlene on 0408 213199 or email [email protected] or write to the Lions Club of Marulan & District at PO Box 69, Marulan 2579.

Thank You from Alice Vesgpignani I would like to thank everyone for their good wishes after my fall. Finally arrived in Italy on the 14th of July. Recovering slowly. These three hills overlook the village where we are now living. Very different to Marulan. Thank you all once again. Alice Vespignani

Marulan & District Progress Association The Association has been fairly quiet this year and is still working on behalf of the community. On Planet Ark Day, together with the association and seven local committees gathered at the HASP land entrance in George Street and planted nine trees along the fence so that when the park and museum are finally built the tress will make a beautiful entrance.

Rosemary Turner, Shirley Smith, Maureen Eddy, John Nicastri and George Smith.

The Association is still working with the Meijbaum family in completing the Meridian Arch. The fiberglass “world” is now at the sculptor’s awaiting for the mosaic to be completed, hopefully by October this year.

This will then be installed and officially unveiled. This whole process is well over $12,000 and has been paid for by the Association, the Meijbaum family and the Holcim Community Investment Fund. Recently for our historical magazine I did a history of the saga of our Town Clock, which was donated by the Lions Club in 1990. The clock face was blown down by the high winds a few weeks ago. However, our Mayor has taken it up on our behalf and hopefully it will be repaired soon. The Association’s next meeting will be on 19th September. We will then meet up again in November to plan our Xmas Lights bus trip and competition. So if you would like to be part of our small but very active group please ring John 4841 1105 or Maureen 4841 1515. Article compiled by Alison Sieler Country Education Foundation As the 2016 school year fast approaches its conclusion, many young people will move onto further education. As this sometimes proves to be expensive for rural children, families need to look at all avenues to alleviate some of these costs. The Community Education Foundation helps rural and regional communities support their local school-leavers – and in doing so, to invest in the future of rural and regional Australia. Grants are for education or job-related expenses such as tools of trade, text books, computers, accommodation costs if moving away from home or a fuel card for someone who has to travel for work or study. Grants are open to school leavers from Years 10, 11 and 12. Go to www.cef.org.au to see the opportunities available and to apply for financial help. It never hurts to apply.

MARULAN VOLUNTEERS Who are we? We are a group of local residents trying to improve the appearance of our town. Why do we do this? If our town looks appealing and cared for, this will attract visitors who will support our local businesses. It also makes it a better environment for us to live in as locals. What do we do? Local council mows the town’s parks and some of its nature strips, but doesn’t have the resources to do much more than this. The volunteers supplement the work of council by regularly cutting the edges and whipper snipping the main street and parks. We also weed the gardens in the parks, and collect litter in areas around town. Other less frequent and one-off activities have included: refurbishing the grounds at the Brewer Centre; mulching the gardens in Meridian Park; repairing and painting roadside fences in the main street; and repairing and painting the fence & rotunda in Tony Onions Park. How often do we do it? Generally speaking, the volunteers work for 2-3 hours on the first and third Monday (starting approximately 9.30am) of each month. How can you help? If you have spare time and are available on Mondays, then we’d love you to join us. If this time isn’t suitable but you’d like to help, then please contact: David Blissett: 0400 119 016; Ellie Eggerking 0406 376 717; John Redhead: 0439 411 922. Volunteers receive a free cup of coffee on “Volunteer Mondays” at The Marulan General Store (facebook.com/marulangeneralstore).

The Tallong Community Focus Group, TCFG and the wider Tallong community wishes to thank our soon to be, ex Mayor, Geoff Kettle, together with Sharyn Ward, as residents of Tallong and inaugural members of the TCFG for their continual promotion and support of our Apple Festival. As Mayor, Geoff has attended local functions and served this community as well as supporting Council’s initiative to fund village improvement. Geoff has been a source of advice and encouragement when following the process to access these funds that have allowed us for the first time to develop our own projects, promote our heritage and to work together as a community. We wish Sharyn and Geoff all the best in the future knowing that we will see them around and ask them to be honorary guests at the launching of the Jim Watling Walkway in the Memorial Park. The TCFG invite you to the AGM to be held in the village Hall on Tuesday 20th September, 2016 at 7pm, followed by a discussion of Village Projects and supper. As the end of winter approaches a reminder from the Rural Fire Service about finishing winter burn offs before October 1st 2016 and instigating individual preparations for the bushfire season. The Marulan Branch of the CWA invites new members to become part of a state wide team that contribute to fund raising for medical research and services, lobby for better services for families, help out in times of emergency as well as providing opportunities for friendship, socialising and personal development. The Marulan branch meets every third Wednesday of the month at the CWA rooms in George Street Marulan and holds special events throughout the year. For further information please contact Sue Montgomery 4841 0288 or Faye Danckwardt 4841 0727. This Month from the Archives September 4th 1936 is remembered as the date when Tallong Memorial Hall was finally paid off using the proceeds of an Ugly Man Competition and ball held at Tallong.

Tallong Twitterings

When the hall was opened on 14th May 1920 by the then Premier of NSW and local member Sir George Fuller MLA, newspaper articles declared it: ‘Tallong’s Day of Days’. The hall was described as ‘a well built edifice of concrete with an iron roof and an excellent floor, sixty feet long and thirty feet wide. Beneath the stage is a meeting room thirty feet by twelve and practically every part of the building was the result of voluntary labour’. In fact, the meeting room was never actually completed and a wooden supper room was later built on the side of the Hall itself.

Tallong Memorial Hall prior to renovation in the 1980s. Note the marble tablet above the door commemorating those who served in WW1. This is now part of Tallong’s War Memorial. Even with donations, though, it took a long time to pay the cost of the materials so there was great jubilation when the Ugly Man Competition and ball in 1936 raised the massive sum of £93. It is not entirely clear, at this distance, how the competition was run but the railway candidate, Mr Os. Haynes triumphed over three other competitors – Mr J.G. Hoare (J.G. Hoare and Co), Mr C.W. Morris (Fruitgrowers), and Mr I.A. Purves (Diggers). Mr Haynes was crowned with a large hat inscribed with the words ‘Tallong’s Ugly Man’. Dancing and euchre completed the evening along, no doubt, with one of the suppers for which Tallong was famous!

The Creative Cook

Here’s a tasty treat that’s quick and easy to make on weeknights after a long hard day at work. Like most of our receipes, you can substitute the meat for a vegetarian option; in this case you can substitute the chicken with tofu (or simply additional vegies). Ingredients 1/3 cup honey ¼ cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon minced garlic 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger 400g prawns, peeled & deveined or else either firm tofu or mixed vegies 2 teaspoons olive oil chopped shallots for garnish Cooked rice & steamed veggies to serve Method 1. Whisk the honey, soy sauce, garlic and ginger (if

using) together. 2. Place prawns (or veggies or tofu) in a large zip-

locked bag or tupperware. Pour ½ of the marinade on top, stir and then allow to marinate in the fridge for 15 minutes or for up to 12 hours. Cover and refrigerate the rest of the marinade for step 3.

3. Heat olive oil in a frypan over medium-high heat. Place the prawns (or veggies or tofu) in the pan and discard the used marinade. Cook prawns on one side until no longer pink – about 45 seconds then flip them over. Pour in marinade and cook it all until prawns are cooked through (about 1 minute more).

4. Serve prawns (or tofu or veggies) with cooked marinade sauce and a garnish of shallots. You can serve this meal with rice and steamed veggies (best if you drizzle the cooked marinade all over).

Enjoy!

Spring is here, the days are getting longer and warmer. It is time to get outside and get things done in the garden. It is lovely to see the spring growth. Plants that were cut back by frosts have come to life. Spring flowering plants are showing a lot of colour. The gardens are at their best over the next couple of months before the real hot weather sets in. Citrus should be watered well then fed with citrus fertiliser. Start looking after your lawn. Spray now for bindii and clover with a specific weedicide for them before the seeds have set. Many weeds in the lawn can be killed off easily by sprinkling them with straight sulphate of ammonia. Do this when the lawn is dry during the hottest time of day. If your grass is looking a bit thin, over sow it with some grass seed. Keep moist for 1 to 2 weeks. Plant now for summer colour. There are lots of annuals that can be put in now, either from see or bedding plants. You don’t have to have a big garden for a good display. Many are suitable for pots or other containers on patios or verandas. Plant flowers that encourage beneficial insects. Now is the time to get enthusiastic about growing vegetables again. Dig out the weeds. Fork over the garden adding as much compost as you can. Choose your edible plants taking into account the space it will take up, whether you need a climbing frame and the amount of sun it needs. Frost tender plants such as tomatoes, should be planted under cover or left another month before planting. Lots to keep you occupied this month. Happy gardening!

Goulburn Mulwaree Council Council Spring Clean Goulburn Mulwaree Council clean-up is on again from 29th August through to 2nd September as spring arrives. The annual bulky waste clean-up encourages recycling and allows households to undertake a clean out of their homes as winter comes to a close. Residents are asked to place waste out for collection the day prior to their normal weekly collection day. Individual items should be easily able to be lifted by two people and waste must be in safe piles of no more than two cubic metres. Please note that matresses and tyres are not accepted, as well as fridges and air conditioners as these need to be de-gassed. Community Bike Ride Jump on your bike to welcome the start of spring in the Goulburn Mulwaree local government area. Join the community bike ride as part of NSW Bike Week on Sunday 18th September. For registration and more information please contact Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Road Safety Officer Tracey Norberg on 0409 986 691 or at [email protected]. Victorian Park Concept Landscape Plan The master plan provides an overview for the long-term development of Victoria Park; it will also inform Council’s decision-making process for fund allocation for projects within the park. Victoria Park is a fantastic community resource and we want to ensure it caters for Goulburn Mulwaree for decades to come. Concept plant for the Goulburn Aquatic Centre Upgrade The concept plan has been through a number of iterations and is now ready for broad community review and feedback. The concept plan features a new indoor pool, new warm water pool for hydrotherapy and “learn to swim” programs, refurbishment of the existing 25m pool into a program pool, café and upgraded gym, refurbishment of the 50m outdoor pool and change rooms and much more. The plan has been created to cater for the long-term development of the aquatic centre. Implementation of the plan will be staged based on the immediate needs at the facility, due to budget constraints. Corporate Sustainability Action Plan The plan sets realistic, measurable actions that council will undertake from 2016-2019 to improve the environmental sustainability of its operations. It provides a vision for a green Goulburn Mulwaree, as council aspires to be a leader in inspiring a sustainable community. Council Elections Council elections are to be held on Saturday September 10th – pre-polling is available at St Saviours Cathedral Hall from the 29th August until the 9th September. Southern Tablelands Rail Users Group STRUG is currently in the process of gathering paperwork to support the request for government funding for a feasibility study into electricifcation of the Sydney to Canberra line. STRUG’s position has been that electricifying the current line and using tilt train technology will provide the best cost/benefit ratio. The feasibility study should look to see if there are any alternative options that could provide the same reductions in journey time and delivering an acceptable cost/benefit ratio. We hope to have the paperwork consolidated into the request over the next month or so. We have the support of State and Federal members, along with local Councils. We are now trying to get letters of support from Chambers of Commerce, local groups and individual businesses in order to strengthen our case for the electricification project.

Grants Available for Local Sport and Recreation Projects Community groups, sports clubs and councils in the Goulburn electorate are encouraged to apply for up to a million dollars to help them deliver an important sports infrastructure project for their communities. Member for Goulburn Pru Goward is inviting local community groups, sports clubs and councils to apply for grants between $500,000 and $1 million for new or upgraded sport and recreation infrastructure projects. Ms Goward said these grants are being made available under the NSW Government’s 2016/17 ClubGRANTS program for projects providing modern and safe community facilities for people to take part in sport and recreation and improve fitness and well being. Deputy Premier Troy Grant said sport and sports clubs are a crucial part of any community and the NSW Government is proud to be able help improve facilities that are relied upon by so many. “Sport and recreation is part of our state’s social fabric and the NSW Government is committed to investing in facilities for our communities to enjoy for generations to come,” Mr Grant said. An applicant information pack is now available on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website www.liquorandgaming.justice.nsw.gov.au with expressions of interest closing on Friday 16th September 2016. Applications will be assessed by the independent ClubGRANTS fund committee and approved applicants will then be invited to lodge formal applications. Successful projects will be announced in 2017. Goulburn Mulwaree Council 2016 Diamond Road Safety Awards Two campaigns that the Goulburn Mulwaree Council has been involved in this year have been nominated for Diamond Road Safety Awards. Motorcycle Hazard Identification Mapping and the Country Roads Safety campaigns are both nominated for this year’s awards which are recognised as Australasia’s ultimate road safety achievement. Citizenship Ceremony A citizenship ceremony held at Goulburn Mulwaree Council chambers in August and saw 19 local residents officially welcomed into the Goulburn community as Australian citizens. The citizens who took the pledge last month represented a wide variety of ages and cultures. Marulan Cemetery Last week Goulburn Mulwaree Council once again fronted the Land & Environment Court to await all the appropriate information to be given by the Al-Mabarrat Society to allow the development application for a cemetery on Highland Way Marulan to be assessed. Once again, the Al-Mabarrat Society failed to supply all the information. The Land & Environment Court determined to give Al-Mabarrat Society a further extension until the 2nd of September to supply the relevant information to allow the council and the community to assess this application. However, the court has now stated that the Al-Mabarrat Society does not need to supply heritage information until the 7th of October. Commencing the 8th of September council will place all this additional information, except the unavailable heritage report, on public exhibition for 28 days. Submissions will be received by council up until the 6th of October, which is inconveniently one day prior to the heritage report being provided to council and the community; these dates are set by the Land & Environment Court. Council is extremely frustrated by the applicant’s disregard for the community process, and we believe the court has been far too lenient with this applicant. However, despite our frustrations, and the frustrations of the community, we need to comply with the court delivered instructions. The full hearing by the Land & Environment Court for this application is scheduled from the 7th until the 11th November. Heroes and She-roes Goulburn Mulwaree Council has been successful with a recent grant application as part of the “Heywire” 2016 Youth Innovation Grants. Heroes and She-roes, a weeklong event focusing on respectful relationships and gender equality, will run from 21st to the 25th November 2016. Further information can be obtained by visiting www.goulburn.nsw.gov.au or by phoning 4823 4444. *the above news update was provided by Goulburn Mulwaree Council.

The Travelling Gourmet

Well the snow has stopped the temperature is creeping above zero. The winds are not to bad, so its time to go on the hunt again for that illusive perfect hamburger. The state of play at the moment is Crookwell and Tarago are in a tie for first, both presenting superior gastronomic experiences. So where to next? Maybe north to the Southern Highlands? Maybe further south to the nation’s capital or if really adventurous west of the supposed food capital – Orange. But looking outside with the wind picking up, clouds that look very heavy with potential snow and the temperature outside in low single figures we decide a pub with an open fire, somewhere that snow plows won’t be required, and the chances of being blown off the highway are minimal. So a short trip to the Nerriga Pub seemed ideal. Having secured a table that was in danger of self combusting because of its proximity to the raging open fire, we settle down casting glances out the window in case of snow and the need for a hasty return trip didn’t fancy a night huddled up on the bare floor in front of the fire with unknown wood supply and didn’t see a snow plow anywhere near. Perusing the menu my eyes are drawn to an item that fills me with trepidation and fear “veggie burger/vegan meals available”. My God this is an area I hadn’t even contemplated. There could be a large proportion of my readers who like these things. As a carnivore all my life it’s not a thing I think about, I tend to feel sorry for them as I do for most people who are deprived of life’s simple pleasures I can’t imagine a burger without meat but vegans will not have anything that is a product of animal. This I presume is an animal welfare thing, something about them suffering. I look at my cattle they are pampered, fed, watered and they have shelter. In general lead a good life, after that good life they happily go along to the sales and enter the food chain. So I wonder how vegans would cope if they watched an interesting documentary I had seen on the science channel about vegetables which proves that vegetables communicate, have feelings and are able to feel fear and endeavor to protect themselves. If this becomes widely known I wonder what will happen to veggie burgers and vegan meals? We have our normal burger in front of the fire. It is very good but the leaders where not troubled by our score of seven. The Travelling Gourmet.
