Use Your Voice to INSPIRE POSITIVE GROWTH in everyone!

Get Connected: Important Information at Your Fingertips Come gather and join the effort to help create

an amazing WHOLE child learning experience

for Edgewood students, faculty, and staff. The

PTO works collaboratively to supplement the

academic learning environment and provide a

special touch that makes school a home-away-

from-home. You can use your super powers to

help us make a positive difference.

PTO MEETING DATES This year we have arranged for all PTO meetings to take place in the evening. This will provide an opportunity for families not available during the daytime hours to attend. The same day of the week was chosen each month for consistency and efficient calendar planning. If you are unable to attend the evening meetings, please do not hesitate to reach out to the PTO Leadership Team to discuss thoughts and ideas. We welcome the Edgewood Family to work in a unified manner toward a common goal.

Using YOUR SUPERPOWERS

to help our children

find theirs.

The majority of Edgewood Communications are done electronically via our email group, PTO

website, and Facebook page. Please make a strong effort at the start of the school year to

become connected through at least one of these avenues, if not all of them. Our proactive

approach to ensuring everyone is on the same page is an important part of our success

throughout the year.

The Edgewood PTO email group is the main communication tool for the

Edgewood community (PTO, nurse, office, etc). Your address will NOT be seen in

group messages or made public. To subscribe to Edgewood’s PTO mailing list,

send a blank email the following address: [email protected].

When you receive the confirmation message, simply reply to it to complete your

subscription. Group messages are sent primarily from these three addresses:

[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. Please add

them to your address book to assure delivery to your inbox.

Another great way to stay informed is to visit the PTO website

regularly. The site contains links to flyers and forms, the newsletter,

volunteering openings, photos, links to other district sites, and includes

an updated calendar of events. Bookmark it as a favorite - http://

edgewoodroar.weebly.com

The Edgewood Facebook page is a great tool for connection and

being a part of the strong community bond that we share as Tigers.

This closed group is used as a resource for information and not a

forum for conversation. This positive approach lends itself to having

questions answered, sharing the many wonders of Edgewood, and helping one another as

take this journey together with our children. Search - Edgewood Elementary - Yardley, PA

Makefield & Edgewood PTO are proud to JOINTLY present

Date: Wednesday, October 18th

Time: 7:00pm

Location: Makefield Elementary School

*PLEASE NOTE MEETING IS NOT AT EDGEWOOD

Presented by: Jacquelyn O'Malley, M.Ed, co-founder and co-director of the Center

for Mindfulness and Wellness.

Come hear about Project CARES (Creating Aware, Resilient, Empathic Students)

and our school partnership for 2017-2018 school year. Mindfulness teaches

children how to pay attention to everything around them — inside and outside and

is the foundation for Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Our bodies and minds give

us signals constantly and mindfulness puts a pause between the thought and the

reaction. Some of the many benefits include:

· Better Focus and Concentration

· Raised Self-Awareness

· Decreased Stress for Students and Teachers

· Improved School-wide Culture and Climate

· Stronger impulse Control

· Fostered Conflict Resolution Skills

· Increased Calm

· Skillful Ways to Respond to Difficult Emotions

· Increased Empathy and Understanding of Others

Dear Parents,

Fall is a time when we see a tremendous increase in viral diseases at school. Please review with your children ways to keep the spread of germs at a

minimum. Remind them to wash their hands with soap and water after each visit to the restroom. Also, please review the importance of using tissues and

covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Keeping fingernails trimmed and long hair pulled up also decreases the transmission of germs.

This is also the time we may see an outbreak of lice. Please check your child’s head regularly. If your child is found to have head lice or nits (lice eggs),

he or she must be treated before returning to school. You will need to bring your child to the health office the morning of their return. The student may

not ride the bus until cleared by the nurse.

Reminder: What to do if your child has an illness

If your child has any of the following symptoms on the morning before school, please keep him or her home until the symptoms have resolved or have

been medically treated. Please note, if your child develops any of these problems at school, he or she will be sent home:

Temperature of 100 *F or higher.

The temperature needs to be normal for 24 hours (unmedicated) before returning to school.

Vomiting or diarrhea

Thick or green nasal discharge

Red, draining or itching eyes

Sore throat

Uncontrollable coughing

Any filled or raised rash

Reminder:  What to do if your child has an injury.

For a minor injury not requiring a physician’s care:  Please send a written note to the Health Office.  You must give written permission to be excused from

gym class for one session or from recess.  A student may not participate on gym/recess with a splint, sling, brace, ace bandage or cast, unless cleared by

a physician.

For a more serious injury requiring a physician’s care or to be excused from gym/recess for more than one session: You must obtain a physician’s note

stating the exact restrictions and duration of restrictions from gym/recess.  You must bring your child to the Health Office if crutches are ordered.

Students will not be permitted to use the stairs while on crutches.  This may pose injury to the student as well as the other students.

Reminder:  What to do if your child requires medication during the school day.

• A physician’s order is required for ANY medication other than those listed on the emergency card.  This applies to both prescription and over-

the counter medications.

• A parent permission form must be completed.

• All medication must be in the original container.

• All narcotics must be delivered to the nurse by a parent or adult designee.

• All medications must be stored in the Health Office.

• Students are not permitted to self- administer any medication on the bus or during the school day.

Please contact the health office of any serious health conditions and incidents including contagious diseases, so I can keep your child’s health record up

to date.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 215-321-2416.  If you have any health records or doctor notes regarding health

conditions of your child, please send copies to school or fax them to 215-321-2412 (Attn: nurse).

Finally, please notify me of any serious health conditions and incidents including contagious diseases, so I can keep your child’s health record up to date.

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me. If you have any health records or doctor notes regarding health conditions of your child, please

send copies to school or fax them to 215-321-2412 (Attn: nurse).

Meeting the Needs of the WHOLE CHILD is Most Important!

EDGEWOOD IS SUPER EXCITED ABOUT STEM!

            Miss Popp’s 2nd Grade class

worked on a science experiment

recent ly. The students were

observing and documenting what

happens when two rocks rub

together. Be sure to check out the

i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t S T E M a t

Edgewood and enjoy the AT HOME

STEM CHALLENGE on this page!

At-home STEM challenge:

Build a tower to support a tennis ball.

Time: 30 minutes

Supplies:

Clock for timing

Scissors

7 plastic drinking straws

6 popsicle or craft sticks

24” of string

24” of masking tape

Rules:

The tower must be at least 10cm off the table.

You may use the table for support (tower does not need to be mobile).

You MUST use ALL of the supplies, but NOTHING ELSE.

You CANNOT replace broken supplies (including bunched tape)- just find a way to make it

work!

The biggest challenge? Don’t look for clues on the internet! Use that big shiny brain,

and see what you can achieve! Just go for it!

Remember, every attempt is a win. Even the famous inventor, Thomas Edison, said, “I have

not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Failures are just as important as

wins, in that we learn from every attempt we make! Good luck, kids!

Box Tops Challenge!

Thanks to the amazing efforts of Edgewood’s

teachers, students, parents, and staff,

Edgewood typically earns about $3,000 a

year from the Box Tops for Education

Program. That’s a lot of money! BUT…we can

earn more.

A s many of you know, one standout Box Tops classroom

usually wins every contest (and often generously shares his

class reward with the second place team). So, this year we are

challenging you to…

BEAT THE BLOOM!

Each and every one of those Box Tops are worth money – clip

them and don’t throw them away! Ask your friends and relatives

to collect them, place a bin in the kitchen at

the office, sign up for the new Bonus App, find

out if your supermarket has a Box Tops

p r o g r a m – w h a t e v e r i t t a k e s ! G o t o

www.BTFE.com for all the ways to earn. The

amazing thing is that, if every class turns in

every Box Top, that $3,000 in earnings could

easily turn into $6,000 in earnings. And if

earning money for Edgewood isn’t enough

incentive, if any class can Beat the Bloom they

will win a pizza party for their class!

The challenge is on! Can you help BEAT THE BLOOM?
