Notes on the ProgramTHE MUSIC OF SYDNEY GUILLAUMEDominus Vobiscum

Sung in Haitian Creole, ‘DominusVobiscum’ is Latin for “The Lord be withyou.” This work urges us to seek Godwithin us. The central theme of the poemspeaks of the Divine Presence in every-one, of God in the depths of our hearts.

Pour Toi, Mère

During my college years, my motherMarlene was diagnosed with breast can-cer. Writing this composition for her wasmy way of coping with her struggles.

Kanaval

Like in many other countries, Haiti has acarnival season that is intensely celebratedwith three huge party days that end onMardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). In 2011, the lastpresident of Haiti who happened to be oneof the country’s top pop stars, decided tohave two carnival seasons. I benefitedfrom that in the summer of 2014 when Iexperienced the summer Carnaval DesFleurs in Port-au-Prince. This was aftertwenty years since the last time I went toa carnival. It was one of my favoritemoments in Haiti that summer. The deco-rations, the music, the joy of the people, the Rara bands, the costumes, the floats…they all inspired me to write a choral pieceabout one of the greatest treasures of theHaitian culture, its “Kanaval”.

Tchaka

Tchaka is one of the most popular meals inHaitian cuisine. It’s a “melting pot”—atasty mélange of different food productssuch as corn, beans with pork, and crus-taceans. Likewise, Haitian folklore consistsof a huge variety of rhythms and dancesthat when mixed together give birth toextraordinary works. Bon appétit andhappy listening!

THE MUSIC OF CHRISTOPHER TINChristopher will be awarded with theGuinness World RecordsTM title for Firstvideogame theme to win a Grammyaward.

The record was achieved on February 13,2011, when Civilization IV became the firstgame to feature a Grammy-winning themesong. Composer Christopher Tin (USA)won in the Best Instrumental ArrangementAccompanying Vocalist(s) category with“Baba Yetu”, some six years after thesong gained acclaim and attention as theopening theme of Civilization IV.

Flocks a Mile Wide (World Premiere)

‘Flocks a Mile Wide’ was originally com-posed for a film by Oscar-nominated docu-mentary director Deborah Dickson called‘The Lost Bird Project’—a beautiful andmoving study of the extinction of birdspecies. It was inspired by descriptions ofthe passenger pigeon—a bird that wasonce so numerous, that enormous flockswould stretch across the sky for miles. While once numbering in the billions, thepassenger pigeon was hunted to extinc-tion in the late 19th-century. This pieceevokes the beauty of a flock of birds slowlytwisting and undulating through the sky,but tinged with a profound sense of lossstemming from one of the worst man-made extinctions in history.

Calling All Dawns

Calling All Dawns was a four-year labor oflove. My goal was to create a work thatwove together disparate cultural influ-ences into a unified work. The goal was toaffirm a simple message—that despite ourdifferences in beliefs and skin color, we allshare common human experiences: we’reall born, we all die, and we all, in one wayor another, give life to those around us.

THE MUSIC OF SYDNEY GUILLAUME“Lesklavaj” from AyitiText by Gabriel T. Guillaume

Nou pase twa san zan anba chenn lesklavaj;

La jounen kon lannuit n’ape redi travay,Nou pote chay sou tèt, nou pote sou zepòl,

Pou zòt ka banbile nan peyi metropòl.Lesklavaj se degoutans!

Texts and Translations

Slavery

I come from Africa, the land of my father; From the French, Hispanic and English ships,I landed in the Americas, the unfamiliar land. This is Haiti, this is my story.

We come from Africa with our strong religion,With bamboos, with drums, with all our souls.Right when we debarked, the villains muted us,They swore a thousand times they would convert me.

They did all they could to make us loseour mind,

To forget about our ancestors in Africa,And impede our words of Liberty,Words of Equality, Words of Dignity.

We spent three hundred years under thechains of slavery;

Night and day we struggled with work,Carrying loads on our heads, loads on our shoulders,

For others to rejoice in the metropolitan lands.Slavery is revulsion!

Dominus VobiscumText by Gabriel T. Guillaume

Pour Toi, MèreText by Gabriel T. Guillaume

(Ahh…)

For You, Mother

From the depths of my memory,With the hollow of my memories,Between the joys of my childhoodAnd all my future dreams,I feel you my beautiful angelI see you my loveO my mother of a kindest heart,My faithful friend of always.

I love you, I love you,I love so immensely,Mother, mother, sweet mother. For your love and your kindness,I will sing your praises all of my life.

(Ahh…)

My soul is delirious at the cries of yourpain; My music throbs and groans its length.

Lord, in your kindness,Comfort my mother.Give her your love, your strength andyour light. For she remains forever my great inspira-tion,And that my life for her is a blessing.

(Ahh…)

Mete de men anlè! (ou-we!)Mete drapo anlè!Mete mouchwa anlè!Kanaval la rive!

Chak ane s’on randevou,Twa jou lanmou, twa jou lajwa.Chak ane s’on bèl plezi,Se yon bèl fèt nan Peyi d’Ayiti.

Men nan men san prejije,Se konsa pou nou fete.Men nan men san prejije,

Carnival

Wake up, wake up, the day has come… today is Carnaval!

Let us gather and celebrate…Shake that shaker, dance that Rara…Wake up, wake up, the day has come…today is Carnaval!

The young ones are disguised, the grown ups are excited,

Madigra* and Chaloska* are parading,What a beautiful season,People on top and people below are united…It’s Carnaval! Carnaval time is here!

Move forward… no hiting! No pushing!Jump up and down as you want,Lossen up, dance however you want…it’s Carnaval!

Yo, this is for real, this party is on,

The songs are hot, look how happy we are!

Yo, this is for real, this party is on,

Everyone is ecstatic, look how happy we are!

The young ones are disguised, the grownups are excited,

Madigra and Chaloska are parading… it’s Carnaval!

Put your hands in the air! (hooray!)Flags up in the air!Hanckershiefs in the air!Carnaval time is here!

Every year it’s a rendez-vous,Three days of love, three days of joy.Every year it’s a blast,It’s a beautiful party in the country of Haiti.

Hand in hand without prejudice,That is how we should celebrate.Hand in hand without discrimination,

Light and DarknessThe paths of light and darkness are asBeginningless and endless as the materialUniverse— by one is liberation attained,And by the other, rebirth. The times during which, after passing fromThis world, the Yogi are either liberated orReborn, I shall now describe to you, greatestOf the Bharata.By Fire, Light, and Day, during the fortnightOf the waxing moon and the summer solsticeThose who pass then from this world andKnow the Supreme shall attain the Supreme.By Smoke and Night, during the fortnight ofThe waning moon and the winter solstice,Those yogi who pass then from this worldWill, upon reaching the illuminated moon, be reborn.

Knowing of these different paths,The devotee is never deluded. Therefore, be always engaged indevotion.
