“What Exactly Is a Game?” Response
Jane McGonigal’s article “What Exactly Is a Game?” describes how every game works
and how they can benefit us in the real world. McGonigal says that the four defining traits of a
video game are the goal, the rules, the feedback system, and voluntary participation. These
games challenge us with harder tasks than we could face in real life to help us learn how to deal
with real life problems. McGonigal is right that video games can train us in skills like problem
solving, handeye coordination, reaction time, and such. Adding to McGonigal’s argument, I
would point out that most gamers use video games as an escape for something better and easier
that reality. So although video games train us subconsciously by being difficult, we still come to
them because they seem to be easier and more engaging. This duality makes video games all the
more interesting and necessary for our growth.
