About Surendranagar District

Surendranagar is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters locatedat Surendranagar city. The district got its name from the Surendranagar city. Sinceseveral principalities of the Surendranagar district were ruled by Jhala Rajputs hence itw a s a l s o popularly known as Jhalawad at that time. The headquarters citySurendranagar including the Wadhwan city is known as the city of Hi-Tech Bungalowsand also as Camp. Sukhlal Sanghvi,a distinguished Jain scholar and philosopher was bornon 8 December, 1880 at Limbdi in the Surendranagar district. He was served as aprofessor at Banaras Hindu University. He was honoured by numerous prestigious awardssuch as Sahitya Akademi Award ,Padma Bhushan award and many more.

Geographically, the district lies at 22.72°N latitude, 71.64°E longitude and 547 mAltitude. The district encompasses a geographical area of 10,423 sq km and it is boundedby Patan district and Kachchh district on the north, Bhavnagar district on the south,Ahmedabad district on the east and south east, Rajkot district on the west and southwest. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. The actualrainfall in the district was 378.4 mm in the year of 2015-16.

Administration wise the district is divided into 10 sub-districts including Vadhvan, Muli,Sayala, Limbadi, Chotila, Chuda, Lakhtar, Dasada, Halwad and Dhrangadhra. Moreover, itcomprises 9 towns and 651 villages in the district. There are 1 Lok Sabha constituencyand 5 Assembly constituencies in the district.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 17,56,268 (persons) out ofwhich 9,09,917 (males) and 8,46,351 (females). The district has a sex ratio of 930females for every 1000 males. In the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in thedistrict was 15.91% (persons) including 15.52 % (males) and 16.34 % (fe males). TheMajor religion s in the district are Hindu and Muslim with 92.26% and 6.25% of the totalpopulation respectively.

The Economy of the district is mainly based on textiles, chemicals, ceramics and foodprocessing industries. The textiles and chemicals industries in the district provide severalemployment opportunities to its locals. Surendranagar district is famous for the ShankarCotton. Moreover, India’s first Cotton Trading Exchange was established in the district.The district is also rich in mineral resources like silica sand, fire clay, white clay andmoulding sand. The contribution of the agriculture in its economy is remarkable. Some ofits chief agricultural products are cotton, bajra, jowar, groundnut, papaya, ber, mango,chiku, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of thedistrict helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district hassome prominent industrial groups which include, PET Plastics, Unifrax, PepsiCo IndiaHolding Ltd., Luxite Industries, Biodeal Laboratories, Mepro Pharmaceuticals, RimtexGroup, Panama Group, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from theseindustries helps in its economy to a great extent.

The district is an abode of numerous reputed institutions. It provides platform for highereducation. Some of its recognised educational institutions are C. U. Shah PharmacyCollege, A R S Sakhida Arts, C. U. Shah Physiotherapy College, M.P. Vora CommerceCollege, M.P. Shah Commerce College, C.U. Shah Medical College, Ratanmama College ofComputer Science, C. U. Shah College of Engineering and Technology, SSP Jain Arts andCommerce College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 72.13%(persons), 82.11% (males) and 61.45% (females).

Naushad Solanki, a young Dalit Leader was born in Dhrangadhra of the Surendranagardistrict. He has served as a member of many organisations locally and internationally.Organisations in which he served are namely National Ground Water Advisory Council –Ministry of Water Resource, DRUCC – Rajkot Division, Spokesperson of SurendranagarDistrict Congress Committee, Vigilance and Monitoring Committee of DRDA, President ofBuddha's Light International Association – Saurashtra Central Gujarat Chapter, Presidentof Surendranagar Table Tennis Association and many more organisations. He has alsoeven actively participated in the UN Conference at Brazil.

The district has numerous centres of attraction with religious and historical significanceswhich allures many travellers from different part of the country as well as world. Themost admired tourist spots in the district are Fatshar Ganpati Mandirand Dholidhaja Dam .Tagore Baug situated in the Surendranagar city also draws many visitors to this place. Ithas two clock towers one is in the Ajramar tower and the other one is in the town hall.Some other notable places of interest in the district are Trinetreshwar Mahadev Temple,Raj Rajeshwari Temple, Chotila Hill, Wild Ass Sanctuary, Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, ZhariaMahadev, Gangvo Kund, Rotary Garden, etc.
