Famous for composing the film music for many Emir Kusturica films - including "Underground" - the Cannes award-winning compossinger and musician Goran Bregovi will be giving the closing concert of the Open-Air Concert series this year. Bregovi has a wideaudience in Turkey. Turkish singers like Candan Eretin and Sezen Aksu have covered his songs, and Bregovi also wrote the music ascore to Can Dndars film "Mustafa" which came out last year. Bregovi will be performing his solo songs and film music as he takesstage alongside the Wedding and Funeral Orchestra.

The Turkish and French Foreign Ministries, IKSV (The Istanbul Foundatiofor Arts and Culture) and Cultures France have organized the "TurkishSeason in France" festival which will take place in Paris, Marseilles, Lille,Lyon, Strasbourg and Bordeaux. The gases that enable a balloon to float are hydrogen and helium. The first person to use hydrogen in a balloon was Faraday (see above), and this enabled balloonsto become particularly popular as toys. But there was also a danger to this little bit of fun. Because hydrogen is a flammable gas, if it came into contact with a flamcould cause a major accident. And so helium was used instead of hydrogen. Even though helium isnt as light as hydrogen, its a much safer gas that has expandedfields of use of baloons greatly.

Frenchman Jean Blanchard gathered a group of travelers including American physicist John Jeffries, in Britain. With funding provided by Jeffries,the group realized the first hot air balloon flight over the English Channel in 1785. It was a tough journey in which they descended so close tothe water that they had to throw off any and all excess weight from the balloon, including their clothes.

It took another 200 years for the first non-stop round-the-world hot air balloon flight to be realized. That honor went to Swiss Bertrand Piccardand Englishman Brian Jones. They completed their flight on 20 March 1999.

The first idea for using balloons as an aviation vehicle was developed byFrench brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier. While sitting by a fire thbuilt in 1783, they noticed how the smoke rises and wondered if it wasbecause hot air was lighter than cold air and that cold air pushed hot air upwards. They thus conducted an experiment by creating a giant bag madeof paraffin paper and saw that when they lit a fire underneath it, the paper rose into the air. Word soon got around and drew the attention of Francesintellectual and scientific circles. A public experiment was conducted in Pat the Versailles in which a sheep, rooster and a duck floated in the air for several minutes before the very eyes of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Tfirst human experiment was conducted on October 15, 1783, at the Chteaude la Muette just outside Paris. The first humans to fly in a balloon werePiltre de Rozier and Marquis dArlandes. After flying for some time overthe skies of Paris, there was the risk that the balloon would catch fire andso they had to land. A few months later in January 1784 the first balloonjourney was realized with seven passengers flying over Lyon.

The festival takes place over a square-kilometer andincludes everything from shopping to food and drink. This is alsoknown as the most photographed event in the world.

Zeppelins are hot air balloons that have the capacity to maneuver freely in alldirections. The word zeppelin is actually technically used to describe the modelof craft that were built in Germany in the 20th century under the leadership of CounZeppelin. Otherwise these zeppelins are known as airships. This aircraft comthree types: non-rigid, semi-rigid and rigid.The non-rigid airships contain two inner balloons that adapt and change according the change in gas, opening and closing accordingly. But because these craft werensturdy enough in the long term, engineers constructed a hard support on the bottomto create the semi-rigid air ship.

As for rigid air ships, they have a hard outer skeleton made of steel or aluminum. Tkind of zeppelin is both stronger and safer than the other varieties of zeppelin, andthese were eventually used for transporting passengers and loads.

Whats the craziest party youve ever organized?Last spring, we did a 50th birthday party for mer Karacans South African busness partner at Sirkeci train station - the final stop on the Orient Express. It was party themed on the Orient Express, and it was a truly amazing night for both thguests and us organizers. I was in awe both of the guests and the decor.

What would be the three questions youd ask someone who asked you to organa party?Were three partners so we always ask a lot of questions. But first we try to getto know our clients. We try and find out what kind of night they dream of, whatthey definitely dont want, and also - a technically crucial issue - how many peothey want to invite. We work for a wide range of clients. Some opt for an arabesque theme, others for baroque, or for minimalist or eclectic... We try to cater toeverybodys needs.

What are the essentials for a good party?A very well worked-out and planned concept, a very good DJ, very good serviceand a great crowd. Aesthetics are great to a point, but if the guests arent happywith their food and drinks, then everything else is futile. Also, the event resembthe host. The host should be like a maestro and he or she should direct the partywith their energy.

Whats your idea of a fun party?I like high-energy parties. If there is good music, I quickly get into the mood. I lparties that have period themes, because I love dressing up in a certain style thatis characteristic of a certain era. But all in all, I wouldnt trade for anything in thworld a little house party with a small group of good friends.

What do you mean by need? Not necessarily a new kind of accessory or a of hat, surely? What do you add that makes that hat or that accessory someththan just what it is? I add sincerity and candor before all else, without even considering thecommercial or business side of it. My need is to simply relate the story thats my head. And of course I also add love. Being able to do this job with just lovquality I nd in very few people.

What was your rst design? I dont know, I cant really remember now. But I know that when I was very yI used to style my own clothes. When I was 6-7 years old I used to wear my

It was obvious way back then that you were one of those people whose feeeven when their hands stop. So what about since then? The best opportunity for my sister and me was our mother taking us to ParisTurkey wed studied in French schools too. After our father died our mother to make sure that we got the best education possible. At rst I went to studycinema, but there was a mix up, my le got lost, and I was left out in the opea year with nothing to do. My mother said that Paris was a life experience inand encouraged me to go there and live with my sister. By coincidence I foua job doing handprint silk painting at Christian Lacroix fashion house. I despatterns for two years; I applied it to trees, for haute couture, for fabric patteThats when I discovered that I like the lack of seriousness and inherent play

of fashion. Its a job that requires a lot of serious creativity and serious lbut every season you start everything afresh and anew. I loved that transienteeting, lightness of the job. You can work all by yourself in fashion withou

too dependent on other people. Of course, for production you need to work team, but theres a period in which you can work alone and get a lot of satisresults relatively quicker than in, say, cinema. So I went to fashion school.

Yazbukey, which you founded with your sister, isin its 10th year. What did she study? How did yodecide to work together? Yaz studied industrial and graphic design and thein her last year studied fashion. But there were nconcrete plans. We never thought we would start a company together. Everything just happened onown. The year we lost our mother we decided to dsomething to honor her memory. We made somestuff from leftover leather fabric, accessories andthings that complement clothes, like capes, bracemasks, etc. We were inspired by the fables of LaFontaine when we made our collection. We want

to show how leftovers could be turned into luxurious things. We were onlyto sell it to a couple of boutiques in London and Japan. Then Bjrk bought tand wore them to the gala of her lm Dancer in the Dark. The door was opand I stepped through.

Where was this door opening to? What did you feel when you saw your owbeing worn by Bjrk? Coincidence, luck, whatever you want to cal l it. We didnt dwell on it that mI prefer to live without any script or any plans. I dont try to plan and progratomorrows feelings and emotions today. But we did take Bjrk and the attenshe drew to our designs as a green light to go ahead with our project.

Do you think its just a coincidence that Bjrk bought your designparallel between youre general style and Bjrks? I dont know, I never thought about that.

Who buys your out of the ordinary designs? The people Id like to see buy my designs are those who can share aappreciate the love, time, care and story that I put into my work. Theshould be a connection with that product. Thats what our designs alike. Nobody buys our accessories because they think theres somethmissing on their jean jacket.

Your Egyptian origins are not well known. Egypt isnt any old forehas a very special history and culture. So does Turkey. And then whParis to the equation, you end up having quite a distinguished lineain uence have these origins had on todays Emel? My great great great grandfather on my fathers side is Mehmet Aliwho established his own dynasty in Egypt after having reoccupied country at the head of an Ottoman army after the ousting of NapoleFrench Army in Egypt in 1801. My father was born in Cairo and soBut I also know my mothers side very well. She has a mixed CircasTatar origin. Another great advantage we had was that our father wadiplomat. Thanks to him we ended up traveling a lot. Some of my befriends were from Guinea, Senegal, and various Arab countries. In thmulticultural lifestyle I learnt to appreciate differences between peoand not to judge them or be prejudiced towards them. What do you value the most in life and what do you say never to?My most important system is to make sure not to act on fear. Mymotor in life is love. If you live in fear of being heartbroken or of feeling pain, then youll miss out on life. This is the case in everythinInstead of running from fear, I like to go right at it, head on. Everythinpasses. Fleetingness is ubiquitous. I never want to say never but I just thought of one of my nevers: never wear a pistachio green itemof clothing. The second is to never compromise or deceive yourself.Sometimes in relationships things get out of control. You feel the neeto put everything behind you and compromise for conveniences sakeIts something Ive done before. You also have to make sure not to gettoo caught up with a sense of possession, because then you lose yourlightness. You cant hold on to things too tightly.

What are your upcoming projects? To continue the Yazbukey collections. I want to design and produce ththat appeal to a wide variety of people. I want to design carpets and enotebooks, and no matter how ephemeral they may be, they can alsobe part of a collection. There are also new things that excite me. Foexample, writing. I continue writing my magazine and newspaper artIll also continue doing the radio program around September. In Octo2010 Im going to open my rst individual exhibition based on the thof love and optimism. I want to do a lot of things. I sometimes want tto be a common point to everything Im doing.
