Greetings D.I.V.A.S As the Mayor of Tallahassee, it is my pleasure to rec-ognize the success of the 2009 Smith-Williams Center Girls Mentoring Program, Determined Individuals Vying for Aware-ness in Society (D.I.V.A.S). I offer even bigger congrat-ulations to the program as a whole, as it completes its 10th year of service. I am certain that this program holds some of the most valued and treasured assets in our community – YOU! As Mayor, I strongly support this initiative, as it increases the knowledge and self-esteem of our young girls and provides a forum for positive role models and positive interactions. As participants of D.I.V.A.S, I also encourage you to strive for higher learning and I hope that you continue your leadership role in the pro-gram and in society. On behalf of the city of Tallahassee and its citzens, I wish the D.I.V.A.S prgram, its staff and its participants continued success.

CONGRATULATIONS ON 10 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENT.

From the Mayor

Sincerely,

John R. Marks IIIMayor

On behalf of the Smith-Williams Service Center, I take great pride in recognizing the outstanding D.I.V.A.S. Girls Men-toring Program of 2009 and the entire program in its 10th year of success. Within six short but successful weeks, we have witnessed these young ladies show their potential to

develop and become produc-tive, contributing members of society. The Smith-Williams Service Center plays an important role in advancing our community. Our comprehensive mission includes providing oppor-tunities for our youth to expand their knowledge and talents, and to gain valu-able leadership and social skills. We strive very diligently to support our youth in every way pos-sible – to ensure they have a smooth and positive transition into adulthood. I would also like to thank our support organi-zations – the Smith-Wil-liams Foundation, Inc. and the Smith-Williams Adviso-

ry Board, Inc., for their exceptional and invaluable assis-tance. In closing, I offer my best regards and warmest wishes. Congratulations D.I.V.A.S. on 10 prosperous years.

From the Smith-Williams Center Supervisor

Best Wishes,

Frank HolmesCenter Supervisor

Congratulations to the Smith-Williams Girls Mentoring Program—DIVAS on its 10th Anniversary. It has truly been a pleasure serving as Program Advisor—a title I do not take lightly. We have done and accom-plished so much over the years. I am eternally grateful that I was given the opportunity to help mold and in-spire the many young ladies who are and have been in this program. Em-bracing the old adage that “It takes a village to raise a child”, I be-lieve that this program has definite-ly played a part in that role. We have indeed touched the lives of many young ladies in that village encour-aging and inspiring them to explore who they are and increase their sense of self-worth.

I would like to thank everyone who have helped along the way to make this program what it is today. A special thank you to the sponsors, workshop speakers, volunteers, and everyone who hung in there with us over the years helping us to execute our purpose and our focus.

A grateful thanks to the parents, guardians, family members, and friends who have provided the leadership to these young ladies and al-lowed us to be mentors. It is our ultimate goal to help these young ladies become self-sufficient, motivated adults.

To our beautiful DIVAS, Rock on! Rock on to a bright and successful future! Set the standard for your generation. And always remember—Your future depends on many things but mostly on you. So make the right choices! Do the right thing! Joy comes in the morning. Love you always.

Sincerely,

Julianne E. Veira, Program Advisor

By Ebonie Cro-martie Being a DIVA is more like a privilege to me. I started off in the 6th grade, hot in the pants and with a bad atti-tude. D.I.V.A.S. was just the place for me. After my first summer in D.I.V.A.S., I improved my attitude, looked the op-posite direction of boys and kept my head in the books. My first year in the program, I didn’t get an award. I wasn’t mad though, because I had had so much fun that I decided to go back the next year, and the next year after that and so on. Now I’m a positive young LADY and I know the difference between a girl and a young lady. The summer after 8th grade I won the award for most improved and I was very happy because I really felt like I’d improved even more that summer. Every young lady comes to D.I.V.A.S. every summer with something negative. But they end up leaving with many positive things. In D.I.V.A.S. we are taught how to prepare ourselves for society. We are taught to be deter-mined to do whatever we want to do in life. We are also taught to be respectful to ourselves and of other’s opinions. We are Determined Individu-als Vying for Awareness in Society.

By Faith Alexia Holmes Hello, my name is Alexia Holmes. I am going to the 8th grade at Florida High School and I’m 14 years old. I have been member of D.I.V.A.S. for three years so I am very ca-pable of sharing with you what the girls men-toring program is all about. At

the beginning, a lot of people may come with attitudes and difficult personalities, but trust me, Mrs. Christic will get that out of them. For example, one time another DIVA and I “got into it” and, instead of being the big-ger person, I kept the argument going. I realized I was wrong when Ms. Terrika, Ms. Keturah and Mrs. Christic gave me a talk about the difference between a girl, a young woman and a lady. It is very important for girls to grow up and realize that the world is changing by the minute. D.I.V.A.S. are the young ladies that are going to make a difference in their community. This is why I keep coming back to D.I.V.A.S. every year. This program keeps girls from getting into trouble over the summer. I have a different meaning for life now because I finally understand why my life is so important and why it is also important for me to succeed in life. I know for a fact that when I come to D.I.V.A.S. I am following positive leaders that would like for me to succeed in life. D.I.V.A.S. has changed me physically, mentally and emotionally.

NEW DIVA VS. OLD DIVABy JaQuay Miller. My first year attending D.I.V.A.S. was a blast. I was not aware that there was a group for girls that offer them structure. The mentoring program bestows plenty of opportunities for girls to become beautiful, determined young ladies. I’ve learned the importance of wanting to NOT be a statistic. As young, black females we are ex-pected to be failures in society. Prior to coming to D.I.V.A.S., I was only somewhat aware of how to be a lady and what is expected of a lady. Throughout the program I have grown. Things that I thought were cool- I have set aside because they are not becoming of a successful D.I.V.A. We have discussions that allow us to share our experiences with the group in confidence. I most certainly plan on attending D.I.V.A.S. next year because this mentoring pro-gram not only helps young girls to respect one another, but to be more productive young ladies. I would also recommend this program to other girls so that they will have a chance to better themselves.

Keturah U. Austin is a first year D.I.V.A.S. enrichment counselor. She is a graduate from the University of Florida and brings her drive to improve her community as well as a passion for building character, self-confidence and aware-ness within all young women. With her “Southern Belle in the Kitchen” cook-ing –style, Ms. Austin has acted as our cooking coordinator who, along with the many talented D.I.V.A.S, have cooked delicious meals for their peers. A native of Tallahassee, Ms. Austin enjoys reading, cooking, traveling and writ-ing. In her spare time she writes songs, poems and monologues. She hopes every D.I.V.A.S mentee will leave knowing that they are beautiful princesses and are sisters to each other. She would like the girls to be left with this quote: “Believe, when you are most unhappy, that there is something for you to do in the world. So long as you can sweeten another’s pain, life is not in vain.” - Helen Keller

Ashley is 18 years old and is an upcoming freshman at Florida A&M University. Ashley plans to major in performing arts and minor in broadcast journalism. Ashley is the granddaughter of Deborah Twitty And Wallace Twitty and he daughter of Layata Twitty and Anton Brooks. Ashley has been a previous DIVA and has the title of MISS DIVAS 2005. Ashley is a true Diva and plans to continue to walk in faith as she continues life.

Jillian is an upcoming senior at Lincoln High School and is planning on attending FAMU for college. She is a sweet and compassionate person whose aspiration is to become a veteri-narian. Jillian is the daughter of Carolyn and Clayton But-ler and she has 2 brothers. She is a former Miss Silver of the D.I.V.A.S. program and is now volunteering with the pro-gram. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. Jillian is a peacemaker and always keeps things positive. Her wish for the DIVAS is that they continue to walk with their heads up and don’t allow anyone to change them.

Terrika M. Mitchell is a third year Magazine Production student at Florida A&M University where she has served as a staff writer/editor for the campus’ Journey Magazine. She is a native of Tallahassee, FL. where she graduated from Rickards High School. Terrika has enjoyed working with the D.I.V.A.S. program and being influential in the lives of young girls in the Southside community. Throughout the six week program, aside from organizing and instructing the girls, she has been in charge of taking and editing pictures for the girl’s end of the year magazine where they can keep an account of the summer. She would like the mentoring program to become a year- long project so that it may prosper and reach more girls in need of the services it provides. She is most grateful for the girls allowing her to be a part of their lives this summer and encourages them, in return, to “choose the road less traveled”.
