Explore. Discover. Unravel.

In this day and age where extreme bucketlist trips are the norm and space tourism a thing-- people can easily become strangers in their own land.

Hence, we decided to come up with an issue that lets you see your home like never before. There are caverns to be explored, wonders to be discovered and a rich history waiting to be

unraveled by you and this issue is all about that.

In your hands are tales fresh from the trails; of people who have chosen the roads less traveled. Fuel your journey with inspiring stories from today’s Saudi explorers and nomads. Hitch your wagon to the SUVs of the Jeddah Jeepers or sneak a peek into our travel diaries. Escape to South Africa or stay homebound and discover the Kingdom through the eyes of Moath AlOfi, chronicler of Al Madinah Al Munawarah.

Destination is your lifestyle GPS that never lags. From how to guides, health trends to keeping yourself entertained, we have got it pinned. See don’t glance, listen don’t hear and do rather than stand still — and Jeddah is bound to fill you with a sense of wonder and adventure.

PROCESSAccording to Fayez Al Harbi, the founder of Basta Market and member of JCCI, “There is no regulation of needing a Chamber of Commerce registration or an official commercial registration; you just need an initiative or a business. You can even start at home and present your product at the

INSPIRATION AND LAUNCHA well-known tradition popularly found in Saudi’s villages, and countries around the world, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry launched the Basta market, with an idea to have a regular Friday market.

AIMTo provide a platform that represents the culture of Jeddah by focusing on entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the local Jeddah household, where they present their products and services to a wide customer range on a weekly basis, eventually converting their efforts into final projects.

Page 21: DJ Issue 88

market and if it is successful and you feel the customers are happy then you can take it further to create your own business.” Although Basta focuses on Saudis, opportunities are offered to expats and local charities to participate as well, creating a multi-purpose market.

FEEDBACK TILL NOW“The response has been amazing, even I wasn’t expecting this kind of reaction. The people’s feedback has been incredible, and they are really happy. They were waiting for a weekly concept like this for a long time,” says Al Harbi. The market has been a source of collaboration for families where all members are working together on projects as a team, hence bringing them closer. Every member has his or her unique skillful contribution, making it a spectacular cultural and family-oriented market.

FUTURE WITH BASTA“The first phase of the market is currently for three months in order to take advantage of the spring weather in Jeddah, as it’s an outdoor venture. We are a bit concerned that it will become hotter in the coming months, so we will consider re-launching it in Ramadan for a

couple of weeks, and later on we will maybe bring it to an indoor location to get more people involved,” adds Al Harbi.

OTHER INITIATIVES BY JCCIThe annual Young Businessmen Exhibition, held at Jeddah Exhibition Center, where many young men and women present products and services. The exhibition took place April 19 – 24, and was developed to an entrepreneur forum that exhibited businesspersons from all over the country and

GCC countries. “It is the first entrepreneurial forum of its kind. It provided entrepreneurs an opportunity to network, develop their business ideas and create joint ventures with others in the region.”

Last month, we introduced the key money personality types. This month we try to present some expert advice for each type. According to “Success Resources” (srpl.net), here are a few pointers:

To the Big Spender You must set – and stick to – certain limits. Keep a diary of all your purchases so you can see where you’re leaking cash and cut back. Devise a budget, then put away your credit cards and give yourself a weekly cash allowance.

To the Saver To improve your financial future, take baby steps toward loosening up. Take a few risks in your investments. Don't

FINANCIAL PLANNING W I T H R E E M A S A A D

let all of the fun parts of life pass you by just to save a few pennies. Moderation is good and life is indeed about trying to balance things out.

To the Shopper Take control of the credit card. Try to focus your effort on savings some money. Learn the philosophy behind successful savings plans. A good way also is to think about the less- advantaged neighbor or friend and imagine how you would do in their shoes.

To the Debtor Get your finances in order and set up a plan to start investing. If you need help (and you probably will) seek a pro and do your mental checks.

To the Investor Bravo! Keep it up. Investing –especially early- cultivates healthy money habits even without planning. The discipline needed to grow your capital cannot be acquired over night. Taking risk requires a certain amount of courage and vision. My only advice is to take “calculated risks” whereby you set certain goals from the start and work your way from there.

In the end, humans tend to change and evolve over time, age and life experiences. We are naturally hybrid creatures and there is no single personality type all the way. The description above helps define behavior toward money, and the purpose is to help us take a mirror image of such behavior and try to improve it as best as we possibly could.

The SuddenResignation ofDr. Lama Al Sulaiman A tell all interview about her exit from the Municipal council and future plans.

Former Deputy Chairwoman of the JCCI, Dr. Lama Al Sulaiman was elected as the Municipal Councilor in 2015. However, she soon resigned from her post, which raised many questions as to why this happened after such a revolutionary election. After much speculation and opinion mongering from different corners, Al Sulaiman breaks her silence and gives us the true story behind her surprising resignation.

We asked Al Sulaiman, what led to her decision to leave and it seems to have all began with a single encounter: “Basically, there was nothing in the regulation that specifically prohibited me, as a woman, to integrate and communicate professionally with elected male members. However, one day I went into a meeting where three men refused to sit with me and insisted on full segregation.”

attract us because we have a desire to participate and they fail to attract us when we’re unable to participate fully and completely. For me, being segregated means not being able to participate. I’ve always mixed with men professionally, everywhere I’ve worked during the past 10 years. It taught me that when you’re in a professional environment, especially when you hold a leadership position, there is no way that men are going to decide whether women should be segregated or not. The segregation issue is a woman’s choice that cannot be imposed by men. That’s why I left and I feel great.”

lamaalsulaiman

Al Sulaiman has now decided to take on less and prioritize her main focus.

It became apparent to Al Sulaiman that this isolated case was in fact a mere introduction to the hurdles she would face as a female municipal councilor, she narrates, “A few weeks later, the ministry sent us a list of advisory by-laws, which before revision, allowed men and women to hold meetings in the same room, but suddenly stated that women had to use separate rooms. Of course, I completely refused. Many people deemed it a sign of weakness and I respect people’s opinions, but having to continue taking baby steps is not my style, when we have come so far.”

Al Sulaiman explained that women always have a choice, saying, “We need to understand that in Saudi Arabia, even though we have strict rules, the only thing we do have as women today is a choice. Simply put, positions

Places VisitedAround the USA, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East, Greece, Turkey, Spain, and of course the cliché European cities like Paris and Rome.

Best Places“I fell in love with Greece at first sight. From its stunning views to its welcoming people, Greece is truly a magical place!”From all the places, Madrid is the most livable, according to Hamidaddin. “It is a great example of a cosmopolitan city with the perfect blend of history, culture and art.

Surprising Destination "Yemen. I went when I was younger and had the amazing experience of touring the country: from the bustling capital of Sana’a to the gorgeous countryside of Ibb and the untouched paradise that is Socotra. Yes, the country is extremely traditional; however, I was lucky enough to experience the real Yemen and the wonders it has to offer."

CAPTUREDON THE STREET

Sami Altokhais

Johara Almogbel

For me, the love for street photography stems from a love of travel. Whether you are in your hometown or in some far city, the beating heart of that place is usually the street.

It was my mother who pointed me in the direction of photographing people, believing that they are the ones who breathe the sense of uniqueness in any picture.

A little excitement because there’s a teeny spurt of adrenaline when you know you’ve only got three rolls of film and every frame needs to count. A little fear because I might miss the perfect moment or someone will suddenly call me out and yell at me.

To make people wonder what kind of person it is, what their life is like, what is going on and how it’ll end up; like they were watching a movie that froze and left them wondering about the next scene.

It transcends all language barriers and speaks with one voice. One can’t brush away the thought of the place’s history, people and culture, and this is generally rendered through street photography.

When you sit quietly and observe with a clear mind and a curious eye you start to notice patterns that can be pre-visualized for a final image. At other times you just have to hunt for the subject.

The streets themselves emit vibes that lure Sami Altokhais into taking the photographs of those walking past him.

The inner workings and kinetic mechanisms of analogue cameras, the dark room process, the light transfer from emulsion to paper chemically capturing a still of time are what initially drew me into photography. It was the rush of documenting the world around me that inevitably led me to street photography.

A sense of escapism, to be able to briefly delve into another realm and to instill a senseof empathy.

Got into street photography because of the intricacies of the process and the thrill of documenting what’s around.

They usually revolve around a couple of things like a story in a scene, the light and shadows or an extraordinary moment. These are all challenges since I have to take most of them candidly, without staging the scene. Those lives I capture, those details are sometimes beautiful, painful or joyful, I just put them in a frame to share with others.

I visited different areas and photographed what we view as routine scenes containing a human subject and I have been doing so ever since.

How did the idea of documenting the old neighborhoods of Al Madinah come about? When I came back from overseas I saw a changing city whose development is taking down parts of its history so I wanted to keep something for the next generation to remember how Madinah used to look like.

What thoughts pass through your mind when walking through Al Madinah’s soon-to-be-removed neighborhoods?Nostalgia that comes from growing up in a similar neighborhood and amazement of how skillful the craftsmen were in using their environment to build these houses from the surrounding materials, lava rocks and palm trees.

You've taken photographs of many places in Saudi Arabia. What was your favorite place to take pictures of and why?Khaybar is number one on my list and I’m still not done with it. Its lava and inactive volcanoes are just amazing and surreal and there are many places including castles and an old town that need to be explored and documented. It’s like traveling back in time when going there.

What do you pack in your bag when you go exploring or hiking?Camera first, a knife, first aid kit just in case, and a lighter. For some long trips or hikes I take canned food,

bread and bananas for a dose of potassium.

What is your favorite city in Saudi Arabia and why?Al Madinah. It’s an open museum full of wonders and it’s in the center of too many favorite destinations. If you goto the east you will find lava fields and Mount Ohain where the greatest inscriptions can be found. If you go up to the north you’ll be driving by some parts of the Ottomans forts, castles and ancient dams to reach Khaybar and Alula. To the west you will reach Badr and the great Red Sea where you can snorkel at the reef. South, there are beautiful villages and nature spots like Khals and Milha, Wadi Alfar’e and Himanah.

Any advice for future documentary enthusiasts?Keep on exploring. Learn and push yourself by walking the extra mile. For out of city exploration and documentation trips, be safe and take care while doing this, always be prepared and let relatives know where you’re heading. For urban or in-city documenting I would suggest that you get closer to your subject and go deep in details, read more about what you are focusing on and be prepared. Don’t be shy but respect the spaces of others.

What are your future plans?I have established Almthba, an interdisciplinary studio focusing on the region of Madinah by promoting art and helping researchers, in addition to planning eco and specialized tours. There is also the Erth Team where we will keep on exploring and documenting the region of Madinah as well as the rest of the country eventually.

Are you self-taught or did you learn photography in school?I feel it is more about what I feel when seeing something. I had an elective course in photography while doing my degree but I remember holding a camera since 10 or so, and I’m still learning. Mobile phones helped me with shaping my skills as it was the start of my documenting journey, using only my phone camera. I learned so much from workshops, reading and seeing great photographer’s works like Richard Avedon and Henri Cartier-Bresson.

You do a lot of aerial photography; how do you manage that? When it comes to aerial photography, I have to mention Captain Abdulaziz Aldakheel. He’s a sport pilot who uses a light sport powered parachute two-seater and single engine aircraft to document the region of Madinah from the sky. We decided to cooperate in doing this and after a while we decided to establish the Erth aerial photography team. Our mission is to document the heritage of the region and its landmarks from the sky. So far our team has grown to 14 members strong.

The first day was chill. We toured the city for a while and had some African BBQ for dinner, looking forward to an exciting day.

Our journey began when five friends from around the world decided to converge at Johannesburg, one of world’s largest urban forests. I started with taking a 7-hour flight from Jeddah.

Johannesburg is a vibrant city that has a lot to offer visitors, from historic sights of political importance, traditional ties, cultural connections, to museums, art galleries and craft makers.

MARCH 5After breakfast, it was an hour’s journey by helicopter getting to Shambala, which literally stands for paradise on Earth. Shambala Private Game Reserve is situated in the Limpopo Province, 2.5 hours’ drive north of Johannesburg or a 55-minute flight by helicopter.

Our stay was at Zulu Camp for two nights where we had delectable food and impeccable service.

MARCH 8Our day started with Great White Shark diving activities. It’s a four-hour long tour where you see the great whites underwater right in front of you, where the only thing that separates you from them are bars of a cage. It was an unforgettable experience.

Shark Cage diving is carried out through out the year, weather dependent. The water temperature ranges between 55° and 65° F and divers take turns in the cage, each staying approximately 15-20 minutes. A diver can expect to make two to three dives per day if good weather, sea conditions, shark activity and visibility prevail.

MARCH 9The day started with delicious Ethiopian food from Addis in Cape. The place provides you with a unique dining experience right in the heart of Cape Town. From the traditional furnishings and the classic Ethiopian coffee ceremony to the serving of food itself, they offered us an exotic alternative to anything we had ever experienced.

From there we went to Bo-Kaap, a colorful neighborhood, as well

as one of the oldest and most fascinating neighborhoods in town. Known for its brightly colored houses and situated at the foot of Signal Hill, Bo-Kaap is the spiritual home of the Cape’s Muslim community.

After all the color-fest we took a car up to signal hill to watch the sunset. The view was heavenly with the city and Table Mountain on one side and the sun setting over the ocean on the other.

Later on we went to Boulders beach and spent most of the day swimming and playing with penguins. At the Boulders, penguins flock all over the place, a unique sight in Africa.

Our dinner was at an Indian restaurant called Bukhara followed by a walk around the waterfront and then we went up on the Ferris wheel.

MARCH 11Table Mountain greeted us as we ascended with the help of a cable car. It remains the most iconic landmark of South Africa. It is also the country’s most photographed attraction.

The latter part of our day was spent walking around Long Street where we sat and watched a jazz band perform live

MARCH 12We watched a rugby match between Sharks and Stormers at the Newlands Stadium. After the match, a Summer Sunset concert was held at the Kirstenbosch Gardens.

For our final day, we went to a cheetah sanctuary where we were in the company of these magnificent creatures, young and old. From there, we went to jam and wine farms to have lunch.

The Trip The tour was aimed at discovering several historical sights in the Kingdom. First they headed to Al Ees governorate to have the transcendent experience of stargazing. They also had fun visiting the Elephant Mountain, which obtained its special shape as a result of strong sandstorms over a thousand years.

They wandered around the labyrinths of Madain Saleh to absorb the ancient vibe and learn the secrets of the past. They then headed to the Hejaz Railway Museum to check out the train models and view all the pictures and replicas on display.

Later on, they headed to Al ‘Ula Village where they got an idea of what village life is all

about. The village is 700 years old and has been restored to become a national heritage site. The Jeepers and their tourists finally headed to Shaabaan beach to relax by the crystal clear water and get some time under the glistening sun. Arabia’s very own Atlantis discovered.

The legacy of Arabia and its people is priceless and their momentous achievements include an ancient city that’s still holding up against the test of time. Al Faw, The Kindah Kingdom’s capital, was constructed with so much sophistication and was one of

the most prolific cities in the entire peninsula.

Nestled in the foothills of the Tuwaiq Mountains in the southern part of the country, Al Faw lies 170 kilometers from the town of Wadi Al Dawasir. It sits right at the edge of the

Rub Al Khali desert and has been relatively untouched. This has safeguarded many of its ancient relics and vestiges, which is what makes the place even more special.

Page 51: DJ Issue 88

The Kindahs The Kindah tribe originally hailed from what is modern day Yemen. After the demolition of the Ma’rib Dam, different tribes dependent on the dam for their livelihood, looked for resettlement elsewhere and some went as far as southern Iraq. The Kindahs, a Bedouin tribe, chose to relocate to the fertile

plains at the foothills of the Tuwaiq Mountains.

The Rise and Subsequent DemiseIt was in the first century BC, that this city was made the capital of the Kindah Kingdom. It grew to a size of 3-square kilometers and was known by many names throughout the ages including

the “Red City” and the “City of Gardens.” Sitting on the incense route, the city grew in importance commercially and economically.

Al Faw had a strong Greek influence due to the far-reaching influence of Alexander’s conquests and it, which can be seen in the Hellenistic paintings and other artifacts found in the city. This also highlights that the residents of Al Faw had interacted with distant cultures and traded widely. The paintings were in fact a revelation, as they transformed the understanding of ancient Middle Eastern art.

Al Faw and the trading route it was on, peaked in the 3rd century CE. The city continued to be inhabited till the 4th century, after which it fell into demise. There were hardly any writings from historians that even mentioned it, almost erasing all traces from history. This ancient town re-entered the history books only in

1940 when it was discovered by engineers working for Saudi Aramco. Excavations began much later in the 70s, revealing incredible finds.

TodayMany of the artifacts unearthed at Al Faw found their way to the Kingdom’s museums. Some were even displayed worldwide in the “Roads of Arabia” traveling exhibition.

In addition to artifacts, a large number of literature was found in the area. Due to their rich writing system, many finds about their ancient life were uncovered. The residents of the city wrote on a wide range of topics, from religious and commercial issues to personal matters and trade.

The archaeological excavations revealed a planned city that has paved roads and allotted areas for markets, wells, cemeteries and places of worship. There is a lot more to be excavated and only time will tell what mysteries will be

unearthed at this city that has baffled historians.

The area has been fenced and many of the sites in it cannot be reached. A road from Wadi Al Dawsier takes you to a stone’s throw distance from Qaryat Al Faw. There are plans by the authorities to open the ancient town to the public. Visitors who go to the site today can see a good portion of the ancient town from outside the fences.

What started your interest in super motors? My older brother, Eihab, also a super motor enthusiast, bought me my first bike – a dirt bike. That was the turning point. I am thankful to him.

ride every Friday/Saturday morning and we travel abroad for tracks: Dubai, Qatar and Bahrain mostly. A few months back, we traveled to Mugello, Italy for the Ducati Racing Experience (DRE). There’s also the Motorcross group – it’s essentially dirt biking, an adrenaline-rush adventure full of stunting in the dunes. There is also the well-organized Harley Davidson group.

For cars, my brother and I are fortunate to own Ferraris, so we joined the Ferrari Owners Club, which was officialized by Italy HQ recently. There is also the newly established Supercars Club Jeddah, which any supercar owner can join – perfect for meeting other enthusiasts.

Are the groups open to everyone?Yes, but we have strict rules

and regulations; we have high standards for the riding style and protective gear.

What advice would you give to other riders? If you are fortunate and able to go abroad for tracks, put all your energy into doing that. Don’t take it to the streets. We all know someone who has been affected by an accident; it’s tragic. Think of your family; there is no need to be reckless for the thrill of a few seconds. If you spend a little extra on protective gear, it is worth it.

What would you like to see improve?• Transparent driving rules; the Dos and Don’ts. • Tracks and circuits - I would personally invest in a motorbike school. We drive safely in small groups and buy all the expensive protective gear, but it is still safer to fall at a track or circuit, than on the roads with pedestrians and cars. • Protective gear here is not the best quality. If we had a track, it would encourage investments, making it easier to find necessary accessories.

A New Age For SAUDI WOMEN IN MEDIAAl Juhara Sajer and Hessa Al Awwad dish on the “vlogging” life. By Aabiya Baqai and Anousha Vakani

Al Juhara Sajer The Professional Dreamer

A R T S & E N T E R TA I N M E N T

Sajer started off with a beauty and fashion vlog aimed at young Arab girls for tips and tricks on style and beauty. She then added a travel vlog. “The second channel is where my viewers follow me around to different destinations.”

She preferred not to show her face at first but eventually began showing it in 2015 when she believed it was the right choice to make and the audience was ready.

Sajer refers to herself as a “professional dreamer” because she has managed to convert her dream of traveling and vlogging into a career. Sajer adds, “Rather than just making vlogs when I’m bored, I get paid to travel, to go to events and to see the world, which is a dream come true.”

Al Juhara Sajer was a college student who got really ill one day, forcing her to stay at home and spend time on YouTube, only to realize that there was a lack of local Arab vloggers. She then decided to make her own videos.

Sajer believes that new age media has completely evolved the audience experience. “In online media, because a lot of people are exposed to honest relatable perspectives, it’s a major change from traditional media.” She also thinks that the role of Saudi women in this media is slowly and steadily gaining strength.

“When I started my channel four years ago, I got a lot of negative comments from men telling me that YouTube is not my place and I should focus on house chores instead. I was shocked, so I approached my dad for advice and he told me not to quit, but rather change their mentality and pave the way for other women.”

Sajer has even involved her father in her

DIY videos in Arabic. After discussing the idea with her family, she started creating videos that focused on nail art. Al Awwad was especially obsessed with “beautiful hands and nails.”

At first, Al Awwad didn’t appear in her videos. She only began to appear in them three to four years after starting her channel and admits that she was a bit concerned at first, as she covers her face. However, Al Awwad knew that if she would always be too scared to take the next step, she would never achieve her dreams. She is confident in her choice now, saying that there was a lot more support than criticism and while many of her fans were confused, most felt closer to her.

Now a partner with Duniati and despite the growth of her

YouTube channel, Al Awwad says that her channel is all about her fans: “I don’t see my lens as an object, it’s like I am looking at my audience. At the end of the day, the most important measurement of my success is if I can draw a smile on my fans’ faces.”

She also says that her fans encourage her to keep going with their nice words and support. She recalls an incident where a mother emailed her saying that she couldn’t communicate with her teenage daughters, until they discovered her videos and now make it a weekly routine to watch her videos together.

Al Awwad draws inspiration from everything around her from abaya designs and makeup to music videos. She gets a lot of ideas from the Internet, her fans and her mom.

ART TALK With Hamza Jamjoom

How did you begin? It all started in 2013, when I realized my passion for Arabic calligraphy. My handwriting was bad since I was an amateur, and it took me around three years to become what I am today. Practice is the key, and also never stopping. I used to read Arabic calligraphy books and watch videos of well-known calligraphers and that helped a lot.

What’s the concept behind your art?Not all my pieces have concepts; I try to concentrate on the beauty side and the simplicity of the artwork itself.

Shaker Kashgari and Calligraphy

What are your plans or goals for the future? My goal is to design Arabic calligraphy physical landmarks either in Saudi Arabia, the Arab world or even globally.

How can people buy your art? They can contact me on Instagram or via email, [email protected].

TAKING MUSIC TO A WHOLE NEW LEVEL

Rapper and songwriter, Moh Flow, and music producer MindCircus discuss their new original music.

By Sohila El Saadany

Music lovers, rejoice! HRMNY Brothers and Sounddive are working on making new music together. Moh Flow (Molham) and A.Y. (Ayham) from Harmony Brothers along side MindCircus (Mohannad) from Sounddive are releasing a new album very soon. Moh Flow and Mind Circus sat with us

to discuss the project as they describe it as having“broken a barrier, a type of quality that was never here.” Moh Flow who gives life to his own lyrics with his rap explains, “My brother, Ayham, and Circus make the music and I write the verse and rap it. In this album they are letting me take more control than previous works.”

The members will all try to bring in what they most excel at. Moh Flow adds, “The way Mind Circus plays the piano is amazing and Ayham with

the bass and the drums and basically the arrangement of the song, so this will be great group effort.” Moh Flow also stated that his favorite track from this new album is called “Show You.”This album will feature a lot of different sounds and musical arrangements and maybe, this is why the guys are taking their time releasing it. As MindCircus elaborates, “We are trying to mix all the worlds here with synthesizers and strings and saxophones. We are utilizing everything we both have to produce it.” It is meant to have a live feel to it and to take an artistic route to rap that defies its cliché notion of it being aggressive.

The album will be out

soon once the artwork and

visuals are done. They even plan on making an

unplugged version of it.

Coming from a tattooist background, what difficulties did you find in the makeup industry? Coming from an artist background—whether it be tattooing, drawing, or painting—I find that it really does translate into how I personally do my own makeup and how I approach creating new products. Understanding art fundamentals truly lends itself to makeup application. So in all honesty, my background does not present itself to be a challenge at all. How do you make your products stand out from other brands?I think Kat Von D Beauty stands out in many ways. Of course, our patented formulas are game changers, but I think the overall, unapologetic sentiment of the brand really sets us apart. Nest desserts for your sweet cravings.

The inspiration behind Nest came from the various sweet offerings found at festivals and fairs throughout North America. Nest's signature desserts, funnel cakes, consist of a doughnut like pastry that's fried and topped with creamy soft ice cream and homemade strawberry sauce. Nest, which opened in September 2015 based its name on its funnel cake which looks like a bird's nest with sweet goodness nestled in the center.

Nest of Desserts

People can choose from a variety of different toppings. These include the Lotus Spread, Nutella and peanut butter. They can be combined with other dry toppings as well. In addition,Nest also offers soft waffles and Japanese inspired crepes, which similar to the funnel cakes can be topped with any combination of toppings of your choosing. All the offerings are prepared in-house with the best available ingredients. They are made to order and served hot. The crunchiness of the fried base mingled with the silky smooth ice cream makes for an experience that will have you going for seconds and thirds.

Saying no to bogus hunger pains.By Amal Al Toaimi

Feeling hungry is your body’s way of telling you it needs fuel to function. However, I’m referring to the days when you just finished lunch, but half an hour later you feel hungry again. Common reasons you’re always feeling the need to munch.

1. You Are Not Eating Enough“When your stomach is empty for too long, your body will release more ghrelin, an appetite-stimulating hormone, leaving you feeling famished,” said Amanda Foti, M.S., R.D., a senior dietitian at Selvera Wellness; this results in overeating. Try eating a healthy meal or snack every three to four hours.

Why You JustCan’t Stop Eating

2. You Are Eating Too Many Carbs and SugarsEating carbohydrates and sugar will make it almost impossible to feel satisfied. These carbs give you a sugar rush and a burst of energy and then crash, causing your body to crave more; a continuous cycle of dissatisfaction. Try pairing carbs with protein and healthy fat.

3. You’re StressedStress increases the body’s production of the hormone cortisol, which increases appetite. Research and studies found that stress increases sugary and fatty food cravings. These foods will comfort you momentarily, but will increase your snack cravings. Try joining a gym class or walking instead. ST

6. You’re Not Eating the Right Balance of NutrientsYour snack or meal should have three components: protein, fiber and healthy fat. Together they help slow digestion, keeping blood sugar stable and keeping you fuller for longer.

5. You’re Not Considering What You’re EatingEating sensibly means paying attention to what you’re eating instead of just chowing it down. Chew your food slowly, picking the most nutritious and filling items.

7. You’re Not Getting Enough ZZZZSleep is linked to two hunger hormones, leptin and ghrelin. Leptin decreases appetite and ghrelin increases it. When you are not sleeping enough, leptin drops and ghrelin soars; making you hungry. Aim for eight hours minimum of rest per night.

4. You Are Not Drinking Enough H2OSometimes our bodies mistake hunger for dehydration. When you feel hungry, drink a cup of water; if after half an hour you’re still hungry then you should grab a snack. Always keep a water bottle with you.

8. You’re Suffering From a Medical ConditionIf you’ve tried the above and you’re still at “can’t stop, won’t stop,” then it’s yourcue to visit a doctor. Some health issues that affecthunger can be hyperthyroidism, depression, diabetes and anxiety.

For the very first time in KSA, Gold’s Gym Saudi Arabia initiated a 12-week Transformation Challenge for its exclusive members Nov. 11 last year. The challenge was a body transformation contest, which included 56 sessions consisting of 12 Boots Camp complementary classes inside the gym and outdoor activities outside the gym. The participants were of both genders and in two age categories: above and below 35. The challenge’s aim was to help the participants get fit, exceed their fitness goals and improve their overall health, consequently reaching their maximum potential in fitness and health and attaining “a legacy of strength.”

out through the motivation and guidance from trainers at each step. The key was for the participants to not only reach their goal, but also adopt these fitness strategies into their routine, which they can use wherever they are. The trainers also provided the participants with nutrition tips, motivation tools and fitness awareness resources to keep them on track in achieving their ultimate fitness goals and maximizing the best results possible.

The main sponsors of the entire event were Saudi Auto together with Canon, Franklin Marshall, The Beauty Clinic, Diet Center, Regilait, Green Cola, Casablanca, DIET snack, and Sports Direct.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N GSPIRITUALITY

Traveling around the world is a very spiritual experience, as we get to witness the beauty of Earth and the people in it. Allah has created our incredible Earth for us to appreciate and learn from it. “And the earth We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and have produced therein every kind of lovely pairs (of plants).” Qur’an (50:7)

The little stones and the soil that we walk on have their own beauty, if only we took a few minutes to observe. The birds, even the crows and pigeons in the cities are beautiful, we only need to look at them with some love.

“Do they not see the birds controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.” Qur’an (16:79)

Beauty has a different meaning for each one of us, and if we look close enough, everything has its own beauty.“And we have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with stars.” Qur’an (67: 5)

The people around us are alluring in their own unique way. Someone’s voice and someone’s natural smell might be beautiful if not their face or hair.

Also Allah has created everything with a purpose and that little worm, which we trampled on this morning must have served some purpose in balancing our ecosystem. Every human is important, even the cruelest of them; without them we wouldn’t know that we shouldn’t be like them and should work to be better persons. We are interlinked and interconnected with every living creature on this earth, and so we should take time to appreciate the beauty and be thankful for every single thing that Allah has bestowed upon us. So travel, explore and observe, even if you only get to see outside your window, remember Allah in whatever you see. Remember Allah and Allah will remember you. Beauty is all around us in nature and in the people around us, we just need to learn to appreciate them and be thankful.
