“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” R 11:29

God has a special mission in mind for each of us. He has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission. We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He

has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work

will be left undone.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time We are hardwired for wholeness and crave it. When something is

broken, we want it fixed. If a part of our body is not working properly, we want it healed. How often do we find ourselves

saying, “I’m tired of struggling with this cold, I can’t wait for my surgery to heal, or I want my treatments to make me better.”

Wholeness and healing restore our relationships and make us free to love as we desire. We know very well how our limitations, imperfections, and brokenness really limit us. They can easily

prevent us from being and doing what we want to do. Our physical and emotional wounds and maladies are easier to identify. If my back hurts, I feel it and know what part of my

body needs attention. If I am feeling intense anger, I can identify the emotion and take necessary steps to uncover its cause. Being

persistent often brings greater and quicker results. But will pursuing and even achieving our physical and emotional healings really be enough? We forget that there is a deeper healing that we seek and desperately need. As we look around at humanity, there are some physical and emotional wounds and scars that cannot be made whole. They are limitations that must remain and, for one reason or another, cannot be rectified. Does this mean that the

wholeness and healing that my being longs for is not possible for me? Must I settle with less than what God promises?

The answer is no. Ultimately, there is a desire that goes deeper than the physical and emotional. It is a desire that resides in our soul. What we really seek and thirst for is healing and wholeness for our soul. Inner strength, conviction, focus, grounding, love,

hope, faith, courage, determination, peace, and connectedness are all words that center us on eternity. They direct us to a presence we discover in our core, which is none other than the presence of God. In God, we are healed. When we are persistent in reaching out to and establishing our relationship with God, real healing

and wholeness begin to happen. There are some limitations and some of our brokenness with

which we may simply have to live. This does not mean that we have to abandon our journey to wholeness and healing. If we have done our inner soul work, we have worked toward and acquired what and who we ultimately need and desire. ©LPi

AND SO IT BEGINS

“The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.” ~ J.P. Morgan

This is a new school year and everyone is looking ahead. Because of the pandemic, hard choices are being made by many parents and students. Should they attend school? Should they be educated remotely? Should they look for a hybrid of the two? Should they stay out for one semester or the entire year? How long will the pandemic last?

As some ask those questions, others — like our school’s administration — are asking another set of questions. How can we keep our faculty, staff, and students safe? How can we provide a dynamic learning environment? How can we help our students live in peace rather than fear? How can we provide for those who choose to learn remotely?

These are tough questions to ask and even tougher questions to answer. That is because the data changes by the month, week, and even day. We will have to do a lot of shifting in order to provide for our students while keeping everyone as safe as we can. This is not just on us, though. We can do everything possible to keep our students and staff safe; however, they have to be practicing safe practices when they are at home and when they decide to go out so that they do not bring anything into the building and classrooms.

No matter the decision, one thing is clear: we must move ahead. To remain in one place causes us to become stagnant and that is not healthy. While we move ahead this year, we will have to take extra precautions. But, we need to move. J.P. Morgan reminded us, “The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are.”

We are asking many questions about our upcoming school year and making many plans and provisions. However, moving ahead is more than about school. We need to apply this to our spiritual lives as well. If we remain where we are at, if we do not move ahead, our spiritual lives will stagnate and will not be able to provide us with what we need to live as faithful followers of Jesus Christ.

Moving ahead can be frightening. It can be confusing. It can leave us with many questions. But it is the only way in which we can grow. Do not let fear freeze you in place. Rather, ask the Lord for the courage that you need to take those first steps toward the future. Courage is, you know, one of the powerful gifts of the Holy Spirit and is available to all who ask.

We are going to do our best this school year. We are asking as many questions as we can and making many provisional plans. Please pray for us as we move ahead.

FAITH ACTION: Ask God for the courage that you need to move ahead in your lives.

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Beware of the following computer viruses:

Titanic virus: Makes your whole computer go down. Disney virus: Everything in the computer goes Goofy. BBC virus: Runs the same programs over and over, week after week after week. X-files virus: All your Icons start shape shifting. Schwarzenegger virus: Terminates and stays resident. It’ll be back.

THE OBLIGATION TO ATTEND WEEKEND MASSES The Indiana bishops have extended the dispensation. Here is their message: “While commending our pastors and pastoral life coordinators who have gone to great lengths to assure safe worship spaces in our churches, due to the increase in the COVID-19 cases in our state, the Indiana bishops have decided to extend the dispensation from the obligation of Sunday Mass attendance beyond August 15 until November 1, 2020, unless further developments determine otherwise.” Those of you who are not compromised by ill health and/or advanced age should consider coming to Mass on the weekend. However, if you are uncomfortable or frightened, you are not under an obligation to attend. If you are trying to decide whether or not to go, you might want to ask yourself the following question: “Do I go out to eat or go to other public places and public events on a regular basis?” If you do, then I humbly suggest that you should be coming to Mass as well.

Stewardship Thoughts

· Time is a gift. God gives time to us with certain expectations of how we’ll use it. However, our free will allows us to do whatever we want with it—good or bad. We can cherish our time, but we can also neglect it. We can hoard our time, but we can also share

it. We can invest our time, but we can also squander it. Steve Ganger in Time Warped–First Century Time

Stewardship for 21st Century Living

· In this covenant (Genesis 9:9-11—after the flood), God made a commitment not to destroy the Earth. Because of our love for

God and our desire to be the image of God, a reciprocal covenant from us is an important act. Lovingly caring and nurturing health within all of God's creation is an outstanding act of stewardship.

Luke Gasho in Creation Care: Keepers of the Earth.

St. Vincent De Paul Society Challenging times abound! Most have encountered some

challenges recently due to job loss, illness, death of a loved one or an assortment of issues related to the COVID pandemic. This

does not even include the everyday trials that many face! The St. Vincent de Paul Society has been active and on the front lines throughout the pandemic, assisting those in need with food

delivery, utility and rent/mortgage payments for those in the region we serve.

The following is a synopsis of our activities from April to June: • 94 food deliveries were made assisting 288 individuals

• 41 households received assistance with utilities or housing payments.

All of this would not have been possible without the very generous donations of our parish community through food and

monetary contributions. Thanks to all of you and may God bless you with patience and endurance at this troubling time!

If you are aware of someone who would benefit from our help, please advise them to contact the SVDP through the

Parish Office, and ensure them that all communications are kept confidential. Thanks!

Items Needed for Our Pantry: Please be as generous as possible.

Please check the expiration dates before donating. To learn more about SVDP please call Terry at (219) 836-8610.
