Sectionalism in the American System

• Sectionalism- having more loyalty to your region than to your country. Americans begin to think of themselves as Southerners, Westerners, or Northerners rather than Americans. This ends cooperation.

• Southerners -support slavery and states rights (idea that states are more important than than the federal government) and anti-tariff

• Missouri wants to become a state, but will they be a free or a slave state?

• Monroe Doctrine of 1823 says no European colonies can be created

• Its illegal to do this but we do anyway• No way of enforcement unless britian

helps so we promise them some trade rights.

• Very successful policy, sets standards for U.S. policy- policing!!!
