NYERI PRESBYTERY REPORT

TO THE 22ND

GENERAL ASSEMBLY-APRIL 2018

1.0 PREAMBLE

Nyeri Presbytery is one of the 56 Presbyteries making the Presbyterian church of East

Africa and it was inaugurated on 23rd June 1963. It borders the Presbyteries of Nyeri Hill

and Kiganjo to the North, Othaya and Mukurwe-ini to the South, Tumutumu to the East

and Aberdare Forest to the West.

The seat of the County Government falls within the Presbytery. It is home to two large

hospitals i.e., Nyeri County Referral Level 5 Hospital and Outspan Hospital both of which

have Medical Training Colleges. Other hospitals include Nyeri Hospice and Mt. Kenya

hospital all of which we offer services through chaplaincy.

The Presbytery is also home to big learning institutions which are: Dedan Kimathi

University, Kagumo Teachers College, and National Technical Institute Nyeri. The

following institutions have set up campuses within Nyeri town: Kenyatta, Mt. Kenya,

Nairobi, Karatina, and Kenya Methodist Universities. This is in addition to our primary

and secondary schools’ student’s population of 10,367. All these and their respective

workers demand services of a chaplain

It comprises of 12 Parishes and Nkondi Nendeni Area (in Tharaka Nithi County) with 72

congregations, 16,409 members of which 5718 are children with all of them served by

321 active elders and 149 retired ones, 12 Parochial, 2 institutional and 5 retired

ministers. In addition there are 15 evangelists and two youth coordinators in

Nyamachaki and King’ong’o Parishes. However, the Very Rev. Bernard M. Muindi and

also 8 Elders passed on in the year.

Population growth in the Presbytery was highest among institutions where 13.3% growth was realized followed by children in the church, 11.2% and adherents with 6.7% growth. However, boys were 10.93% less the number of girls in the church while girls exceeded boys by 21.54% in our schools. This position must be put on focus in the succeeding year. Among those that were saved 271 souls as reported by three areas only.

16.0 PRESBTYERIAL GROUPS AND COMMITTEES

All the groups and committees have been actively involved in their Mission. They carried out their

mandated duties and cleared their cess in the year and were able to settle safely after the restructuring. A

summary of their work is shown here .below:-

1. PCMF

(I) King’ong’o:

Dinner with a message, 1 seminar, monthly prayer breakfast meetings, Bench

marked with P.C.E.A Ongata Rongai, alternate monthly visitations to members

and parents of members.

Ongoing welfare outreaches to church members and P.C.M.F members during

happy and sad moments.

Had a rite of passage with a total of 37 boys.

(II) Nyamachaki:

Had rite of passage for 182 boys and 7 others who joined training.

Follow up seminar for the previous rite of passage, 23 new members were

admitted, 5 dedicated, 8 commissioned. Prayer breakfast, bench marking in

Ebenezer Parish, Kiganjo Presbytery, monthly committee meetings, 3

Congregational visits and pastoral visits to the needy.

(III) Ruring’u:

Held rite of passage for 92 boys for 12 days.

Held Monthly meetings, pastoral visits to affected families, involved in wedding

preparations, visiting sick in hospitals and visitation to Minister.

Participated in community social welfare through harambees, involved in

preaching programme, new admission service.

Couples seminar was held 30 couples participated.

Parish counsel retreat and AGM attended by 46 members.

(IV) Riamukurwe:

They had rite of passage with 61 boys.

Held seminars and mentorship groups and also participated in Parish

development.

(V) Kagumo: had 4 boys in the rite of passage.

Had an Admission seminar, admitted 49 men, 26 commissioned.

Participated in the preaching programme.

Seminar on Men empowerment in family, Church and society.

(VI) Gaaki: Follow up seminar for the rite of passage 2016 candidates done.

(VII) Gura: Had 4 Council meetings.

(VIII) Giakanja:

Had a seminar and recruitment of members.

Had 4 council meetings.

(IX) Ihithe:

Had 4 meetings.

(III) Nyamachaki Parish:

7. HEALTH COMMITTEE

(I) St. Cuthbert’s Parish: Held 6 Council meetings.


Held 2 Counsel Meetings.

4 medical camps held.

De-worming to members done.


Held12 meetings.

Had 4 pastoral visits to the sick.

Organized and carried out 1 day medical screening camp on cervical cancer,

Breast cancer, blood sugar, H/P, HIV testing and counseling. Identified cases

were referred to hospital for management.


Held 10 meetings.

Seminar on nutrition.

Free medical camp, treated 250 clients.

Presbyterial health group visit.

Health week was observed.

(V) Riamukurwe Parish:

Health talks on diabetes, cancer, NHIF and H/P.

Health youth seminar attend by 5 congregations, 59 youth members attended; 28

boys, 31 girls.

Visited 3 sponsored schools and gave health talk, hygiene, development,

relationships and drugs & substance abuse in collaboration with K.M.T.C Nyeri.

Health talks in congregation on H/P, diabetes, members advised on nutrition.

Deworming done to all congregations.

(VII) Gaaki Parish:

8. EVANGELISM

(i) St. Cuthbert’s Parish: Held 2 Council meetings.

(ii) King’ong’o Parish:


Organized and conducted covenant renewal service.

Organized and run a 40 day prayer programme where churches were

congregating on weekly basis for cooperate prayers.

Parish mission which comprised of 4 simultaneous door to door Evangelism and

open air meetings, 99 souls came to the Lord.

Assistance to the needy done during mission work.

Mission was done in collaboration with church groups, others churches and life

Ministry Kenya.

Follow up of souls given to Christ done during the period.

Prayers for the Parish 15 year’s anniversary celebration.

Organized prayer walk for 15 years anniversary celebration.

Held worship experience, sent 3 missioners in National mission in Uganda.

Participated in Presbyterial Mission in Nkondi Nendeni Area.

Parishioners teamed up with 130 Karatina University students.

Door to door, person to person crusades and evening revivals done.

Pastoral work in Elder district, King’ong’o Prison and Huruma Children’s home,

donated items to both institutions. 3 prisoners got saved.

Held missions and seminars where 115 souls gave their lives to Jesus.

(iv) Ruring’u Parish:


Held 3 prayer retreats geared towards spiritual growth.

Sere Olipi mission held for 3 days, 8 people got saved.

Assisted in construction of Sere Olipi church and sanitary facilities. All were

completed and handed over to Mararal Parish.

Held annual dinner with a message presided by the Secretary General Rev. Kania.

Held evangelism Sunday and Revival week facilitated by Missionary Andrew

Ng’ang’a.

Participated in Presbyterial mission in Nkondi Nendeni Area.

Held Pastoral visit and mission in Nyeri Referral Hospital and 4 souls accepted

Christ, presented gifts to children in maternity.

(v) Riamukurwe Parish:

17.0 ACHIEVEMENTS:-

1. FINANCES:-

(a) The Parishes financial performance to the Head Office MMF improved by 21.8% from 77.9%

to 99.7%.

(b) We managed to pay all the workers and all their respective deductions in the year.

(c) The Presbytery started a fifty one seater bus project and is awaiting workshop clearance for

release by end of January 2018.

(d) For convenience in development and ease in management, the Nyeri Presbytery Office plot

was sub-divided into three.

2. NKONDI NENDENI AREA:-

The Presbytery organized a four-day Evangelizing service in Nkondi, Tharaka County as from 6th

–

10th

September 2017 and the following was realized:-

(a) Fencing of P.C.E.A Marimanti and Thangatha Bridge Churches.

(b) An additional plot neighboring Marimanti church was purchased at Marimanti.

(c) Due to the Parish partnering with congregations in this mission area, a good improvement

has been realized in line with making it a Parish by the end of the year 2018.

(d) P.C.E.A Nkondi Town Church started with an average attendance of 15 people and doing well.

(e) The Outreach Foundation under Stewart Ross accepted to partner with us to put up a church

at Nkondi town and the roofing of Tumbura church. The project is on-going.

(f) Free medical Camp was organized where 655 patients were treated.

3. PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH YANG RIM CHURCH

This was strengthened through sending 3 Presbytery officia ls to South Korea where a Covenant of

Understanding between this Presbytery and Yang Rim Church was signed. Through this covenant,

our brethren agreed to develop Honi Centre and mostly the already opened Honi Hospital.

4. CAPACITY BUILDING

103 Church Elders were trained for three days each through the continuous capacity building

programme in the Presbytery.

5. PARISHES PERFORMANCE:

It was calm in all our Parishes and work went on well thus resulting to the outcome enumerated

above,

6. GROUPS RESTRUCTURING

Groups and committees restructuring went on well and was done within the stipulated time. All

assets and liabilities were attended to and their work rolled out very well.

7. PRESBYTERY GROWTH

The Presbytery has a steady growth on:-

(a) Spiritual growth

(b) Leadership development.

(c) Missions and ministries.

(d) Stewardship and proper management of resources.

(e) Population.

18.0 CHALLENGES:

19.0 FUTURE PLANS

1) Deal with the above cited challenges through their respective proposed strategic

remedies.

2) Continue with mission work in the same aggressiveness.

3) Encouraging bench marking at all levels of Church Leadership.

4) Presbytery office expansion to provide a spacious boardroom

5) Roll out a development plan to our proposed business premises.

6) Improve Honi Centre to:-

Raise the hospital into an affordable facility offering quality and specialized

treatment.

Develop a vocational training institution that would help unleash the potential of

the area.

Intensify farming for optimum benefits.

7) Continue with the capacity building initiatives to church leaders and general church

membership for empowerment to all.

20.0 CONCLUSION

As a Presbytery, we give glory and honor to God who gave us a conducive working environment that

made us realize positive growth in all areas. We were able to achieve financial targets, population growth

and capacity building of the leaders. Our groups were able to settle safely after restructuring and we

hope they will continue to carry out their mandate effectively in the future.

Mission work has progressed on well and we were able to plant a new congregation in Nkondi Nendeni

Area. In conclusion, we are greateful for the support given by our members and we hope the same shall

continue in the New Year.
