Does God Possess People?

Embed Size (px)

DESCRIPTION

This is a Facebook conversation I had with two of my friends that discuss an occassion where the "Spirit of the Lord" takes possession of a person. Literally, in the Hebrew, the Spirit "put on" Zechariah, like when someone "puts on" clothes. There was some confusion, so I decided to step in a try to explain. Apparently my answer was good. What do you think?

Jon Weideman It's like this: Adam and Eve were perfect and naked in the Garden and they were not ashamed. God is the same way (for we are made in His image and we are a shadow of the things in the spiritual world). Anyway, putting on clothes for Him is different than putting on clothes for us.

Logically: Human bodies are to clothes as God's Spirit is to human bodies.

Bodies wear clothes just as God can wear bodies (I know that sounds weird, but it makes perfect sense in my head).

Just imagine if we were a race of sweaters. How odd it would sound for one of us to say "Humans wear sweaters like how sweaters wear patterns/designs". A sweater would understand having a design but it couldn't fully understand how it itself could be worn by another thing (a human) thus the sweater's understanding is limited. I suppose it's the same way with us and God; we can understand wearing clothes but we cannot fully understand we ourselves being worn by another being (God Himself).

I hope this helps clarify it. If not, sorry.

Jon Weideman Also, for God to be visible/present/manifest in our physical world, he has to take on a physical form (i.e. burning bush, pillar of fire and cloud, Angel of the Lord, thunder and lightning and fire on Mt. Zion, when Abraham meets a man whom he identifies as God, etc...). So in these instances, God would be "clothed" in fire/cloud, thunder & lightnig, or even in the body of a human. Now of course especially when God, in the form of a human, met Abraham, He didn't necessarily have to use a pre-existing body (a body with a conscious living person, like you or me, in it already). God could have created a body by controlling the forces of matter, used it to meet with Abraham for a brief time, then leave and destroy the body (or poof it out of existence).
