lace the leash between the sole and the heel of
our shoe. Give the command down; then pull up
on the leash. Sometimes it is necessary to pull his
legs forward until he goes down.
6. Down StayAfter your dog is in the down position, give the com-
and stay, both orally and by signal, and drop the
leash in front of him. Stand on the leash close to
and facing him. Remain there again for a few sec-onds and return to him

let him sit or move from his spot until you release
him with praise and a pat. If he sits at any time, lift
him into standing position from the right side with
your hand just in front of his right rear leg. Give the

8. RecallThis is to teach your dog to come to you immedi-
a e y w en you ca . s s e mos mpor an an
perhaps the most difcult lesson to teach. Begin
w e og n e ee pos on. ve e comman
and signal to stay. Then walk out in front of him to
the full length of the 6-foot leash, turn to face him,
and as you give your dogs name and the command
come, give a sharp jerk on the leash and run
backwards several feet. Never just pull or reel yourdog to you. He must come promptly and sit square-
ly in front of you until you give the command heel,
at which time he will return to heel position.
9. FinishThis is used to complete many obedience exer-
cises. With your dog in the heel position, give the
command and signal for stay and pivot out in front
of the dog, facing him as close to him as possible
w ou ouc ng. ex , ca s name an g ve e
command heel! At the same time take one step
ac w your r g oo , eep ng your e oo nplace. With the leash in your right hand, swing the
og aroun you an ac o ee pos on. s e
dog goes around you, step forward again with your
right foot. Once dog is back in heel poison, make
m s . prac ce your og w earn o come o
heel smartly without any assistance from you.
10. Heeling off Leashever try to heel your dog off leash u til he is
perfect on leash. Most dogs will requi e a half hour
of training every day for 16 weeks before they are
ready to be taken off the leash. If you try him off
leash and he makes a mistake, you must immedi-
ately put him on leash and work him until he can
work correctly.
