ILU FRESH PRODUCE

The recently installed Independent Living Unit vegetable garden beds have been well received and well used over the last few months. Olwen Cowan is pictured below with a giant zucchini grown by Jim Brady… wowsers, truly impressive!

RESIDENT OUTINGS

RESIDENT ACTIVITIES

Below left Evelyn Cornell and Betty Sanders lend a helping hand with food preparation, and right Allison

Stacey and Don McKenzie enjoy a game of ‘Snakes and Ladders’ with the kids.

To express their gratitude to the school children who visited The Lodge and sang Christmas carols, our

Residents made beautiful bright lollie bonbons. Below Betty Barry, Annia (Lifestyle Coordinator), Don

McKenzie and Betty Sanders are busy at work making them up. Such a clever idea, they looked fantastic!

A game of ‘Balloon Bop’ enjoyed by several Residents is pictured below left. Right; Pauline Harper has a

look at some of the beautiful items available for purchase from ‘Bev’s Baubles’ who came to The Lodge

just prior to Christmas. We would like to extend a huge thankyou to Bev for taking the time to visit and

provide the opportunity for our Residents to do a little Christmas shopping.

SPECIAL THANKS

THE HISTORY OF QUOITS

Over the past few months our Residents have thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment provided by Clarry Golder. It has been wonderful for them to sing along to toe tapping songs and reminisce of days gone by.

Sadly Clarry’s time with us has come to an end as his busy schedule will no longer allow him to visit every second Friday, but we wish him well and hope to see him back here again soon.

Thanks Clarry, it’s been an absolute pleasure!

The history of quoits is disputed. One theory often expressed is that the sport evolved as a formalized

version of horseshoes, which is a sport that involves pitching a horseshoe at a spike in the ground. A

more likely explanation, however, is that horseshoes evolved from the sport of quoits, which in turn has

its origins in ancient Greece. On its website, the United States Quoiting Association explains that poorer

citizens in ancient Greece, who could not afford to buy a real discus, made their own by bending

horseshoes - which in those days weighed as much as four pounds each. The practice was adopted by

the Roman army and spread across mainland Europe to Britain. The aim of the sport remained as a

competition to see who could throw the object the furthest, until "at some later, undocumented point

in history, perhaps around a few centuries A.D., the idea of using a wooden stake or metal pin driven

into the ground, to use specifically as a target to throw at, totally redefined the pastime from a game of

distance to a game of accuracy.” Source: Wikipedia.

Below left Gladys Krause (pictured with Chelsie King, Lifestyle Assistant), and David Collard (pictured on

the right with Annia) try their skill, and luck, at this age-old game.

KEEPING CONNECTED

A lovely photo of Ruth Shepherd and Personal Care Attendant Lynne Wyllie (below left). Our staff always

do their best to go above and beyond when caring for our Residents.

WE LOVE LUCY

Lucy is our Resident cat who is much loved by many here

at The Lodge. In early December representatives from

Australian Hearing came to meet with a few of our

Residents. It was at this time that one of our Residents

said the sweetest thing, something that we think

deserves mentioning…

“The only reason I am getting hearing aids is so I can hear Lucy purr.”

– Dennis De Costa

Lucy can often be found curled up at the foot of Dennis’ bed.

CAKE TIER STANDS NEEDED

Given that we often host High Teas at Dunmunkle Lodge, we are seeking donations

of cake tier stands… if you have any you don’t need or use, we would be happy to

put them to good use. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Above right Rosie Ball keeps connected with her mum in between visits via Skype. For those of you who

don’t know, Skype is a telecommunications application software product that specialises in providing

video chat and voice calls between computers, tablets, mobile devices etc.
