DON’S 101 THINGS TO SEE & DO IN BALI (THIS VERSION UPDATED - JUNE 2011) So you’re off to Bali….. and without doubt I know you will have a great time in the “Isle Of Smiles”. There are many things to see and do in Bali for the active (and less active) traveler. Bali’s rugged and majestic landscape offers up an ideal setting for the active adventurer and there is an abundance of adventure tours such as rafting, hiking and cycling catering for all age groups. In contrast, Bali’s “cultural centre” of Ubud has many diverse art, craft and cultural activities that travelers can join in to cultivate more of an understanding about the history, culture and daily life of the friendly Balinese people. Here is my list of 101 Things to See and Do in Bali divided into categories: WILDLIFE - ZOOS & PARKS, WATERSPORTS, ACTION & ADVENTURE, GOLFING IN BALI, CYCLING - HIKING & TREKKING, BALI’S BEACHES, MUSEUMS – ART & CULTURE, COOKING CLASSES, TEMPLES & NATURAL ATTRACTIONS.
But of course there’s heaps more too that I’m sure you will find by yourself that are as equally enjoyable…… why not drop me a line and let me know of your experiences so we can add it to our list. I’d also appreciate any news advising of price changes so we can keep this list updated for other intrepid Bali travelers.

WILDLIFE - ZOOS - PARKS BALI’S DOLPHINS - Swimming with them……or Watch / Follow them by boat ? There are two main Dolphin attractions in Bali. One is at Lovina Beach in northern Bali where you pay a guide who takes you out in a boat and you watch the dolphins in their natural environment (the ocean). The other is a new attraction just off the coast near Sanur in the south in a floating sea pen where you can interact (swim) with the dolphins. Bali Dolphin Lodge - Sanur There is now a special facility in Bali that allows you to interact and come into close contact with dolphins. In a huge floating sea pen just off the coast of Serangan near Sanur, (accessed by a short 5 min boat ride) you can touch, hug, feed and play with dolphins. Dolphins Bali provides a shallow area platform (approx 1.5 mtrs deep) for visitors to swim, pat and interact with the dolphins. There are as many as 8 dolphins to interact with and with a maximum of 5 persons in one session. As well as interacting with these beautiful creatures there is also the opportunity to only watch and is only half the price. Witness the spectacular and acrobatic dolphins with their stunning leaps, somersaults, jumps, side slaps and back flips. Watching the dolphins can be as equally rewarding as interacting with them and makes for a memorable experience and a great opportunities to take pictures or video of these beautiful sea creatures up close and personal.

Bali Dolphin Watching Tour - Lovina On of the most memorable things to do in Bali is going on a Dolphin tour in Lovina. These dolphins gather together every morning around the reef. Don’t be surprised if you see them suddenly swimming next to your boat. The tours can be arranged in the hotels and villages at Lovina. Tours start just before the sunrise.
Prices range from about US$8 – US$15 per person but do not include transport up to Lovina. (Remember, Lovina is in north Bali about 3 hrs drive from Kuta, most visitors to Lovina stay overnight).

Bali Safari & Marine Park - Gianyar The Bali Safari and Marine Park is located in Gianyar and showcases many Indonesia's protected wildlife which there natural surroundings and environment, this amazing wildlife including the conservation projects such as the Sumatran Tigers and many other wildlife from both the land and the waters of Indonesia. Bali Elephant Park - Taro (near Ubud) In the quiet central highlands of the Indonesian island of Bali, just 20 minutes from Ubud, is the small town of Taro, home to some pretty impressive residents, the Sumatran elephants. After deforestation in Sumatra, the elephants were left homeless and with a depleted food supply. Fortunately they were rescued and now live happily at the Elephant Safari Park. What's more, it's the only park in the world where you can sleep in luxurious surrounds near these rare indigenous animals. The park was founded by Australian Nigel Mason, who took nine neglected elephants from the village and travelled to Sumatra and rescued another 18. His operation is part of the World Zoo Association, so animal welfare is the priority. You can touch them, handfeed and interact with them. You can even help bath them. There are safari rides through Taro's jungles with riders perched in a teak chair on an elephant's back. After the trek, lunch is served at the Park Restaurant beside the elephant bathing lake. Then everyone heads to the Elephant Arena for one of three daily talent shows.

Sacred Monkey Forest - Ubud Because monkeys can embody both positive and negative forces, the Balinese both loathe and revere monkeys. Monkeys that occupy sacred Balinese Hindu temple sites tend to be revered and protected by the Balinese. One reason for this is that monkeys, in the form of a Barong, are believed to be capable of guarding temple sites against evil spirits. Currently, there are approx 340 (Balinese long-tailed macaques that inhabit the Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal.

Bali Butterfly Park (Taman Kupu Kupu) - Tabanan The Butterflies are one of the natural riches which can be found in every part and corner of Indonesian archipelago. Bali Orchid Garden - Denpasar This hectare of beautifully landscaped tropical garden provides a relaxing environment displaying many tropical plants and exquisite orchids blooming throughout the year. Komoda Island Tour – Komodo National Park Nestled between eastern Sumbawa and western Flores lie three tiny grass-covered islands Komodo, Padar and Rinca, which together form the Komodo National Park, a protected wildlife reserve. This is the home of the giants lizard known as the "Komodo Dragon" it was thought to be a myth until the turn of the century, when fishermen who were forced by a storm to take shelter on Komodo sight the monsters. Bali Camel Tours – Nusa Dua Amazing experience riding a camel on Nusa Dua beach. It gets a little bumpy on top but once you have mastered your balancing act it’s quite a fun thing to do. Trek along the beach and dunes and imagine you are in the Sahara.

Bat Cave (Goa Lawah) Tour – near Candidasa On Bali's east coast is the small but important temple of Goa Lawah. The temple itself is built just in front of a cave opening in the coastal cliffs. The cave is home to thousands of fruit bats, and according to legend, a giant dragon-like snake called Basuki which also makes the cave its home. The legends also say the cave extends all the way to Besakih temple, more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) away but apparently, fear of the giant snake has kept anyone from checking this legend out. Goa Lawah is Bali's most important temple for matters pertaining to the afterlife. On holy days, the beach in front of the temple is the site for funeral rites for those Hindu’s that can afford it.

The Blanco Renaissance Museum - Ubud Artist Don Antonio Blanco claims roots in Catalonia, Spain, but he was actually born in Manila, The Philippines in 1911 (or 1912). He lived for a while in Florida and California, and graduated from the National Academy of Art in New York. Like many artists before him, he felt the call of the tropics and traveled to Hawaii, Japan and Cambodia before eventually ending up in Bali in 1952. He married a famous Balinese dancer named Ni Rondji in 1953. The King of Ubud granted the artist two hectares of land above the river, where he built his home and museum. Blanco passed away in 1999, but his family continues to live and work in the compound. In addition to the main museum building, there are extensive gardens with a number of birds (caged and free) scattered about. The artist's studio - still used by his son Mario - as well as the public spaces of the main house is available for viewing. A small shop near the family temple carries some fantastic jewelry designed by one of Blanco's daughters. The museum is open every day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Museum Puri Lukisan - Ubud When the high quality of Balinese art became worldly recognized, more and more Balinese artworks disappeared to other parts of Indonesia and foreign countries. Thus, the fear among the Balinese people, and also Rudolf Bonnet (a Dutch painter, 1895-1978), raised that the most precious art would be lost forever and would never come back to its origin. Another need among the artists was to improve their skills without losing their own identity as Balinese artists. In 1954 a foundation stone-laying ceremony was performed by the then Prime Minister Ali Sastroamidjoyo. The name of museum would be called “Puri Lukisan" (palace of painting). The collection started with a donation of paintings from Rudolf Bonnet, eventually more followed. Museum Puri Lukisan shows with its collection of paintings and woodcarvings the important developments of Balinese arts which is unique and priceless. Tuban Beach

Padang Padang Beach
Just down the road from Uluwatu is Padang-Padang, which is another enchanting beach nestled into a pocket of lava-rocks, with an entrance to the beach though a cave crevice. This small cove offers famous world-class waves that attract surfers from all over the world. The water is also safe for swimming and snorkeling. The beach is small but the setting is enchanting and memorable, and like Uluwatu has warungs for drinks and snacks.
Kedonganan Beach
It's about 3 kilometers, (around 10 minutes) from the Ngurah Rai airport. Kedonganan is a quiet fishing village, where you can visit a traditional fish market and see a 'Jukung', the traditional fishing boat hauling in their catch of fresh fish on the beach. Here, you can order the seafood grilled at a seafood restaurant along the beach while you watch the sun go down.

Down the Peninsula from Padang-Padang, this long stretch of white-sand beach is free of warungs and people, and still maintaining its original natural make-up of flora along the towering cliffs. Unfortunately, at high tide the beach all but disappears under the waves, and for this reason Impossibles is not an ideal place for relaxing on the sand, although it is a great setting for a sea-side walk at low tide. Swimming is not advised here, and the waves are for experienced surfers only, as they break over reef.
Matahari Terbit (Sunrise) Beach
It is just 5 minutes from the beautiful Sanur Beach. It is black sandy beach with most of local people come here in the early morning to watch the sunrise and see the Mount Agung
Uluwatu – One of Bali’s Best Surf Breaks
Uluwatu is perched above the cliffs on the island's southern peninsula. It is home to one of the oldest and most important temples in Bali. More recently Uluwatu has become famous for its challenging surf break and the spectacular views from the Warungs (restaurants) perched up on the cliff.
Padang Galak Beach
The white sandy beach, is a popular place for surfing, includes the warung and accommodations. In the morning, you can see the beauty of the sunrise, also the Mount Agung can be seen from this beach. And in the middle of the year, The Bali Kite Festival is always held at this beach.
Tulamben Beach
The lava floods and rolling of huge volcanic stones dragged the shipwreck of Liberty to the depth of 30 meters above sea level and fragmented into to parts. This shipwreck then became home to hundreds of species of coral fish and shrimp. That's why Tulamben is more quiet but more popular for diving and snorkeling.
Sindhu Beach – Sanur
Sindhu Beach and its neighbor share a huge lagoon which is protected by a circling reef. The lagoon isn’t buffeted by large waves and is therefore ideal for water sports like Kite surfing, Parasailing and Windsurfing. There is a paved walkway that stretches approx 7 klms from Mertasari Beach in Sanur’s south all the way north u to the Inna Grand Bali Beach hotel and along the way there are literally hundreds of shops, warungs, bars and restaurants.
Nusa Lembongan Beach
In Balinese, Lembongan means mushroom. Nusa Lembongan is one of the most popular destinations for cruising and sailing. The pristine white sandy beaches with aquamarine bays are brimming with colorful sea life, so diving and snorkeling are also very popular sports in Nusa Lembongan. One can also enjoy the glass bottomed boat rides. With the backdrop of Mount Agung, Nusa Lembongan has spectacular scenery and offers unforgettable adventures.
Nusa Penida Beach
Nusa Penida offers fine swimming, surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, and sunbathing, also dramatic walks, unspoilt scenery, deep caves, and delightful friendly villagers. Nusa Penida is the most gorgeous dive place in Bali with a vast spread of coral reefs and rich with color and fish. Most visitors stay in Jungut Batu on Nusa Lembongan and come over to Nusa Penida island on day trips.
Tanah Lot Beach
Located at the Tabanan, Bali 's southwestern coast, Tanah Lot is famous as the place of holiest temples on the island and the sunset above the Indian Ocean. With the black sand, Tanah Lot Beach is not recommended for swimming or surfing for the beginners but it's great for horse riding and watching the spectacular sunset above the Indian Ocean.
Echo Beach – Canggu
Echo Beach isn't a swimming or relaxation beach, but has a world reputation as a great surfing beach break. The beach is rocky and the sand is black (volcanic). The surfing attracts crowds of surfers and watchers, and it is enjoyable to watch the action from the seawall while enjoying the cuisine from The Beach House Restaurant and other beachside warungs. The road to Echo beach has only recently been upgraded and resurfaced to cater for the International qu under construction there at present.
Lebih Beach
The black sand of Lebih Beach is contrasted against the blue ocean backdrop. There are various water sports or sailing on the 'Jukung' the traditional boats can be done at this beach. On the black sand, you can have picnic with your friends or family and enjoy the grilled sea food.
Geger Beach – Bali’s Hidden Secret Geger Beach is Bali's Hidden Paradise. Geger Beach is a quiet beach ideal for swimming, fishing, and sunbathing until the sun goes down.
Nyang Nyang Beach
Nyang Nyang Beach is known for its white sandy beach and its perfect waves for surfing. It is located at the western part of Bukit Peninsula, facing the vast Indian Ocean. This deserted surfing beach offers the complete privacy and satisfaction for visitors or surfers.
Medewi Beach
Medewi beach is a small resort in the southeast of Jembrana. It is located midway between Gilimanuk and Denpasar, just off the main road in Airsatang. The beach is perfect for surfing because the waves vary from 3m to 7m high. Small black stones are spread over the black sandy beach, giving a remarkable scene at sunset.
Labuan Sait Beach
Labuan Sait Beach is located a few km north of Uluwatu Temple, facing the vast Indian Ocean. From the parking lot, visitors have to walk through 60m long coral reef tunnel to this beautiful beach of Labuan Sait.
Lovina Beach
Lovina Beach is located approximately 10km west of Singaraja. Its black sandy beach is beautiful at sunrise and a wonderful place for swimming. There is no surfing, but plenty of coral areas for snorkeling and diving. It is also a good place for watching dolphins offshore in early morning. This area is very tranquil with the life of the village that is peaceful.
Dreamland Beach
A few hundred meters up from Bingin is Dreamland, which overlooks every other Bukit beach all the way to Uluwatu. Because of its beauty, white sand and cliff outcroppings, it has become the chic beach of the day, and it is usually fairly busy with tourists, and quite a number of warungs and small bungalows have been built in the area. It is a great beach for swimming and surfing, as it offers a sand-bottom break, but often has a strong rip current.
Suluban Beach
The beach is located a few km north of Uluwatu, close to Bingin surfing beach and Labuan Sait. 'Suluban' derives from Balinese word which means 'walking or passing under something'. The beach was named Suluban, because the visitors have to pass through the coral reef cave before reaching its wide sandy beach. The sea water is crystal clear, and its large waves make it the most well-known surfing beach among the world-wide surfers.
Amed Beach – Simply Beautiful On Bali’s East Coast Amed is actually made up of a string of smaller villages located on a 10km road in the Karangasem province. It starts with the village Amed in the north followed by Congkang, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Selang, Banyuning and Aas. Amed is a quiet fishing village with stunning ocean views and is truly a place that you must visit.
Amed is arguably the best place to go scuba diving in Bali, and travelers come here to marvel at the diverse sea life. Besides diving and snorkling the main activity is just relaxing far away from the tourist crowds in the south. As mentioned the Amed area offers stunning ocean vistas with headland after headland offering amazing ocean views of turquoise crystal clear water.
Pemuteran Beach
Pemuteran Beach is located in Pemuteran Village in Bali’s north west. The beach has so many beautiful fishes, turtles and other marine and submarine habitats and coral reefs. There is also turtle conservation nearby. This peaceful place is ideal for natural excursion activities such as tramping at the National Park, swimming, snorkeling and diving.
Padang Bai Beach
Padang Bai, a picturesque bay surrounded by majestic cliffs and hills, is a perfect escape at the east of Bali. It is famous for its pure white sandy beach and lovely harbor scenery as a transit harbor to Nusa Penida and Lombok Island.
Candi Dasa Beach
Candi Dasa is the gateway to east Bali. The beach has been mostly washed away due to the heavy coral picking. This has now been stopped and tidal walls have been erected in an effort to restore the beach. Slowly the coral is returning, Candi Dasa now has become a popular tourist destination. Unfortunately the beach is not suitable for swimming.
TEMPLES - NATURAL ATTRACTIONS Git Git Waterfall - Singaraja
Git Git Waterfall is a beautiful tourist destination in north part of Bali. Git Git waterfall is located in the plateau area with the height about 35 meters and it is surrounded by tropical tree and emits the constantly natural water debit during the year. There are some plantations protecting the rain forest around the waterfall and in this place we often met the wild monkey to get the water from this waterfall. Git Git Waterfall is one of the famous tourist destinations in Bali which is located in Git Git countryside, Sukasada sub district and about 10 Km from Singaraja Town or about 70 Km from Denpasar.
Banjar Hot Springs – Lovina The Brahmavihara Arama in Banjar is Bali's only Buddhist monastery. The monastery is around four km up an obvious turn-off from the main road. Continue on along the road past the monastery, and winding further up into the hills, you'll be rewarded with the steaming Air Panans Banjar, or the Hot Springs of Banjar, not far from the monastery. These hot springs are beautifully landscaped with lush tropical plants. If you decide to stay for lunch there is an excellent restaurant (Komala Tirta) at the hotel on the left just before the entrance to the springs
Mt. Batur / Kintamani – Kintamani Kintamani is one of the most favored tourist destinations in Bali with the active volcano of Mount Batur and its beautiful crater lake. Kintamani is surrounded by the captivating nature and there are six ancient villages around the cauldron of Batur Lake. Mount Batur has erupted about 24 times since the year 1800 and is still active up to now. Total residents in this area is about 15,000 mostly farmers, local merchants, or work in tourism. There are many restaurants round the rim of the volcano crater and tourists flock to these for lunch and spectacular photo opportunities of the mountain and lake below.
Elephant Cave (Gua Gajah) - Ubud
Visit Gua Gajah (the Elephant Cave) which is located in west side of Bedulu countryside, Blah Batuh Sub district and Gianyar Regency. It is about 27 km from Denpasar town. This cave is built at crevasse edge next to the Pangkung River , where the irrigation is mixed with the Petanu River flow. The federation area of the two rivers is called Campuhan. Since it is appointed as tourist destination, Gua Gajah is visited by many tourist everyday due to it is strategically located on the main road from Ubud – Kintamani. There is a pool (Patirthaan) as a place to take holy Tirtha water for Hindu ceremony which is located in the middle of the cave courtyard.
Pura Besakih - Ubud
Besakih Temple is the biggest Hindu temple in Bali which the local people call Pura Besakih. It has a beautiful view from the top of temple area where we can see the wide nature panorama to the ocean. This temple is visited by many tourists from all over the world. Besakih Temple is located in Besakih countryside, Rendang sub district, Karangasem regency, east part of the island. It is located in southwest side of Mount Agung, the biggest mountain in Bali and because it is built next to Mount Agung it is considered holiest and highest temple or “Mother Temple” in Bali.
Puri Saren Palace – Ubud
Puri Saren Ubud (Ubud Palace) is an Ubud Kingdom Palace with beautiful Balinese traditional houses as a residence of Ubud King. It is set in the center of Ubud Bali with traditional art market just in front of it and it is founded by Ida Tjokorda Putu Kandel who commanded from year 1800 - 1823. This palace is an artistic cultural life center, while the traditional market is the symbol of the local economy. The Puri Saren palace is equipped with a Wantilan/auditorium that is a large building or meeting room and a banyan tree as shelter at daytime.
Tirta Gangga Water Palace – Candidasa area Tirta Gangga is a beautiful park with huge water fountains and ponds located at Abang Sub-district, Karangasem Regency in the east part of Bali. Tirta Gangga Park is built in the year of 1948 by the Karangasem King of Anak Agung Agung Angluerah Ketut Karangasem. Before this park was built, there was a big spring found in the area which the local society believe that this water comes from the holy spring therefore they call this place Embukan meaning wellspring. According to legend this wellspring functioned as a bath place for the gods and also was used as drinking water for the local community.
Pura Tanah Lot - Canggu
Tanah Lot Temple is located in coastal side of Beraban countryside, Kediri sub district and Tabanan Regency. It is situated in 30 Km in west side of Denpasar town and about 11 Km on south side of Tabanan township. The temple is built on a rock 3 acres in size and reachable only at low tide. This temple is very famous among tourist visiting Bali with spectacular views at sunset. The word Tanah Lot consists of two words that are Tanah interpreted as a reef or isle and Lot or Lod meaning the sea, so Tanah Lot is meaning the small island floating on the sea.
Ulun Danu Beretan - Bratan
Ulun Danu Temple is a Balinese Hindu Temple located at Candi Kuning countryside, Baturiti sub district Tabanan regency. The distance from Denpasar is about 50 km north side the way from Denpasar to Singaraja. It is set at lakeside of Beratan with beautiful lake view and hills surround it. It is situated in the plateau area with cool atmosphere surround it and hills as a backdrop. We can find at north side of this temple is Pucak Sangkur mount, in the eastside there is Beratan Mount which also referred as Pucak Mangu or Pucak Pangelengan, in the south side there is Terate Bang Mount and in the Westside there is Tapak Mount and Watukaru Mount. The name of Ulun Danu Beratan Temple is taken from the lake where the temple is built at Beratan Lake.
Uluwatu Temple – Uluwatu
Uluwatu Temple is a Hindu temple set on the cliff bank in south part of Bali Peninsula. It is one of Sad Kahyangan Temple in Bali (six big groups of Bali Temples), located in Pecatu Village, Sub district of South Kuta, and Badung Regency or about 25 Km southerly part of Denpasar town. It is situated on the coral reef sordid to sea about 80 meters above the sea level. It is featured by a small dry forest which is mostly called by Alas Kekeran (interdict forest) which is belong to the temple and dwelt by a lot of monkeys and other animal. Name of Uluwatu was come from the word Ulu meaning the head and Watu meaning stone. Therefore Uluwatu Temple mean the temple built in tip of coral reef.
Taman Ayun Temple - Mengwi
Taman Ayun Temple is a Royal Temple of Mengwi Empire and it is located in Mengwi Village, Mengwi sub district, Badung regency and about 18 Km north side of Denpasar town. It is strategically located beside of major roadway between Denpasar to Singaraja. It is set on the land which is surrounded by the big fish pond and look like a drift on the water. It owns the beautiful temple building with multistoried roof and Balinese Architecture. The wide beautiful landscape garden in front courtyard to welcome all visitors who come and visit this temple. It is a beautiful place to visit on your vacation in Bali.
Kebo Edan Temple – Ubud
Pura Kebo Edan is near Goa Gajah in the east of Ubud suburbs. It is said that this temple was built by Javanese in about the 12th century. Kebo means "buffalo" in a Bali language, and Edan means "It goes mad" in an Indonesian language. It is an unusual temple where two languages were used. This temple has the statue of danced Pejeng Giant with four penises. And, two buffaloes' statues sit on the both sides. The feature of the statue has four penises, twines round one of feet the snake, and the other foot tramples the person. The statue is as much as 12 feet in height, and has been built 700 years ago.
