Studying at StendenPERSONAL DEVELOPMENTUnleashing the potential of each student - that is our mission at Stenden University Bali. At Stenden you receive personal support and a myriad of opportunities to work on your personal development and expand your horizons.

We offer you a programme that stimulates inquisitive and inquiring minds. During your studies you will develop three skills in particular that help you make a difference: › Understanding tomorrow’s challenges,› Intercultural skills and the ability to operate in an international environment,› Cooperating and creating with others.

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING: THE KEY ELEMENT Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is one of the key elements of Stenden’s education and is quite different from traditional teaching. It takes a little time to get used to, but after the first few sessions, students are always enthusiastic about this way of learning. Small groups of students meet twice a week to work together. Graduates acknowledge the value of PBL during their internship and career. Apart from PBL, lectures and workshops are offered as supporting classes for students.

LEARN IN PROJECTSEach study year at Stenden consists of four periods of nine weeks. During each period or module, you will work on a theme with a close link to the real world. You will be introduced to all aspects of the theme through different subjects. These subjects therefore change per module, depending on the knowledge and skills you need for a certain theme.

PERSONAL COACHINGAt the start of the programme, you are assigned a coach who will personally guide you during the entire programme and will help you to think critically about yourself, your way of learning and your future career.

DIPTI MAHTANI “PBL encourages students to think outside of the box. During PBL sessions, students are challenged to think critically about a given task and they are triggered to share their perspectives on topics. This not only insprires students to stepp off the beaten path; they also learn from each other.”

Become a supervisor You will find out what running a hotel actually involves on a day-to-day basis - a process known as operational management. You will learn about business processes, marketing, budgeting, managing staff, procurement, logistics, negotiation and quality assurance. As part of one module, you and a classmate will even run your own virtual hotel, and as for work-experience, you will be on a supervisory level at our 5-star Learning Hotel. Additionally, you have the option to either take Mandarin or Spanish as a second language.

LEARNING COMPANY: ALILA HOTELS AND RESORTSThroughout the programme, you will have the chance to experience the practical side of the hospitality industry by doing several traineeships at our learning hotels. This will contribute significantly to your hospitality management career. Stenden University Bali has a partnership with Alila Hotels & Resorts to assure a high quality educational practice in hospitality management.

The International Hospitality Management programme can be compared to a fast career in the hospitality industry - from operational employee in the first year to supervisor in the second year and manager in the third year. In the third year, during the 3rd compulsory year in The Netherlands students will be in charge of one of the departments of Stenden Hotel in Leeuwarden, for instance Food & Beverage, Sales & Marketing, Front Office, Finance or HRM. SpecialisationStrategyManagement experienceResearch and analysis

Become a managerYou will attend classes in strategic management, including financial analysis, revenue maximisation, market analysis and business plan writing. In addition, you will also take on a research assignment in preparation for your final-year project. As a work-experience student, you will be exposed to practice on a management level at the Stenden Learning Hotel. You can specialise at this stage of the programme by taking two electives. You will spend this entire year at our main campus in The Netherlands.

ELECTIVESElectives are the opportunity for you to specialise, empowering you to focus and expand your knowledge on a specific subject and to truly take charge of your career by ‘customising’ your programme. Examples of electives: Event Management, Adventure Tourism, Food & Beverage Management, International Market Orientation, Gastronomy, Cruise Management, Rooms Division Management and Marketing Communications.

Start up your professional careerIn your fourth year, you will be taking on a final-year project. During a management internship, you will conduct research at a company in Indonesia or another country of your choice, such as the USA, Europe, the Middle East, Africa or Australasia. The internship could take you anywhere: a 5-star hotel, a cruise ship, an events company, bank or insurance company in more than 30 countries. During your 10-month internship, you will have the opportunity to really get to know the company, and many students find that they have a job lined up at their internship company as soon as they finish their studies!

Companies on Hospitality students“We started working in partnership with Stenden Hotel Management School in 2013. We are now working on bringing our 9th International Hospitality Management trainee on board. In my experience Stenden has always sent us highly intelligent, motivated and engaged trainees. Our IHM trainees are able to work well independently and in teams. They also get involved and participate in activities both at work and off site. Since the introduction of IHM students to our team, we have found them to be responsible and dependable, taking on additional responsibility whenever they are given the opportunity. I would highly recommend International Hospitality Management graduates and partnering with Stenden Hotel Management School for all Management Trainee Programmes.”

FROM RUSSIA

MARAT ASKHADULLIN, ALUMNUS IHM

“I chose to study at Stenden because it gave the most complete information about the

studies and the life of an international student in Leeuwarden. Even though my career

is not in the hospitality industry, the programme has presented me with challenges

and given me skills that I still use every day. I have developed a good work ethic and

have risen to the challenges – this has determined my success in my Sales/Business

roles. I am able to deal with people from all walks of life since I have progressed from

Hospitality to Real Estate, Defence and Aviation. Aviation was my dream and I regret

nothing in getting here. The IHM programme gave me a sound basis for management.

So, don’t give up on your aspirations even when consumed by daily routines. How you

deal with the hands-on experience and the theoretical knowledge will determine your

attitude and your success.”

ANOUK SLIERENDREGT2ND YEAR IHM MODULE, BALI

“During this module we visited large

hotels to observe their daily business.

Together with a friend, we rode our

scooters every weekend to check out

Bali. We visited temples, travelled with

a boat to the magical Gili Islands, saw

active volcanoes and learned the Balinese

language. On top of that, we swam

in waterfalls, saw many magical and

deserted beaches and rode the waves.

This is how I experienced the culture and

life of the relaxed and friendly Balinese

people. The Stenden campus was small,

but modern. The people on the campus

are very kind, generous, helpful and

hospitable.”
