Design your Own House Project
Directions: You are going to create a dream house for you to live in! Forthe first part of this
dream house, you will need to determine how the house is wired.
Research
For this portion of the project, you will need to consider the following questions. Appropriatewebsites for you to use are included with each question, but do not let that limit your research!
Practice choosing appropriate resources (Yahoo Answers, for example, is not a credible source).
If you use a website that is not listed, please list the website address after your answer to the
question.
1.How will your house receive electrical power? (answer this below the links)
a. Power generated by a generation facility (what we would consider normal)

2.Watts, amps, volts, and ohms. What are they, and why do we care about them?
a. Watts: (read through this whole page it will help review everything for you!)

3.How does power work once it enters your house? (draw pictures here if you need to)

4. Planning You will need WAY more than one sheet of paper for this, but use this to
begin. Draw (or list) what you want in your dream house.
a. Where is it located? ______________________________________________
b. How many rooms are there? (Draw this out on another sheet of paper if you want)
______________________________________________________________c. What are you using those rooms for? (List this here, or write it on the drawing you
made)
d.
Are you going to have anything outside that will use electrical energy? (A pool,
some sort of cool light fixture, etc.) If so, list or draw that here.

5. Planning Below, list EVERYTHING you want in your house that runs on electrical power.
The sky is the limit and money is no object. After you list everything that you want,
research how much power (how many watts are required) to run what you want. Use
another sheet of paper if you need to.
Dont forget about the things you take for granted if your dream house is going to be in
the Bahamas, you certainly wouldnt want to live without an air conditioner!
For my example, I googled electrical power required to charge a cell phone
What I want in my house Wattage required
Ex) Cell Phone Charger 2-6W when charging, 0.1-0.5W when no cell
phone is plugged in

6.Math
a. From the last page, add up the TOTAL number of watts you are going to need to
power your home. If it is a range (like my cell phone example), use a number in the
middle. I would use 4 watts because the range was 2-6 watts.
b. How many different circuits will your house need? One circuit can handle a total
of 2400 watts.
Design of the House
Now, you need to use paper to draw out what your house will look like. If your house has
multiple floors, you will need to draw each floor on a separate piece of paper. You will eventually
be putting these designs into a poster presentation so make sure that you are drawing neatly. You should do a rough draft before your final draft. See the rubric for your drawings to know
what I am looking for in your design. An example of the design is on the next page.
You will do two drawings per room. One drawing will be your dream design of the room, and one
will be the electrical wiring of the room. An example of the electrical wiring for the room is
next.

How to Design Electrical Circuit Panels
This is an example of what a circuit panel currently
set up in a house looks like. Your house or apartment
probably has one that looks incredibly similar
to this. The idea behind circuit panels is that
this is where the electricity flows in to the house
from the power line cable, and the circuit breaker
is where the wires are hooked up that split the
circuits up. Each circuit has a maximum of 2400
Watts that it can handle before it overloads.
Each circuit is generally wired so that wherever it goes
in the house, the circuit powers that one room or
the one right next to it.
An example as to how to set up circuit panels foryour dream house is below.
Living and Dining Rm. TV Room
Kitchen Guest Bathroom
Laundry Room Bedroom
1500W 1750W
2000W 750W

3. Paragraph 3: Using I statements, relate the readings and classes to your previous
knowledge and experience
In the past, I have known this about electrical wiring.
In the past, I have not thought this deeply about.
4. Paragraph 4: Consider if and how what you have read and learned changes your thinking
and might affect your practice in both personal and professional situations.
5. Paragraph 5: Conclusion. Restating of what youve learned during this project and how it
will affect you/your life in the future.
6. Take what you have written on this planning sheet and put it into a 5 paragraph essay.
Staple your 5 paragraph essay to your poster.
