SESP Objectives

• Assess seismic vulnerability of existing school buildings ,identify and implement measures to reduce the vulnerability through retrofitting of existing school buildings or construction of new school buildings.

• Raise awareness and build capacity on earthquake risks and preparedness of teachers, students, parents, local and government officials and the local communities.

» Two village development committee office buildings built in Bhaktapur as a result of replication

Lesson learned from SESP

• School is the best point to enter into community level

• School Earthquake Safety Program is a complete program

• Construction or Strengthening the school is important and attractive

Lesson learned from SESP

• SESP provided a platform to produce/promote appropriate technology

• Good practice for technology transfer/replication

• Management should cover people from all level

• Transparency plays vital role in community based programs

Lesson learned from SESP

• More attractive outcome are– Construction or retrofitting the school

– Training the masons

– Raising awareness of villagers

– Teaching the children, teachers and parents what to do about earthquake preparedness

• All extras come for a relative small increase in the cost of earthquake resistant construction or retrofitting
