In 2014-2015, Paris-Est d.school is creating a new course in social entrepreneurship: What is it? How will design thinking be taught? What will students enterprise ? When?

Social entrepreneurship is... The economists J. Say and J. Schumpeter argued that entrepreneurs improve the productive capacity of society and provide the « creative destruction » that propels economic change. Social entrepreneurs create public value, pursue new opportunities, innovate and adapt, act bodly, leverage resources they don’t control, and exhibit a strong sense of accountability (G. Dees, considered as the father of social entrepreneurship education). Social entrepreneurship is a process by which citizens build or transform institutions to advance solutions to social problems, such as poverty, illness, illiteracy, environmental destruction, human rights abuses and corruption, in order to make life better for many (see Bornstein & Davis).

What will you learn? The course is articulated on a real project carried out in teams. You will work on problems of low-income people in cities lange everywhere in the world. We are creating partnerships with local organizations in Latin America (Ecuador, Mexico), Asia (India and China) and Africa (Tunisia, Togo). You will work in close collaboration with a liaison in the country and local partners. You will carry out ethnographic research to identify latent needs, generate and test appropriate solutions, as well as create viable business models in order to implement those solutions in real contexts.

Trackrecord of Paris-Est d.schoolSince 2010, projects were launched in remote low-income villages in Marrocco. These where carried out by students of the department industrial engineering from ENPC as part of ‘Innovacteurs’ in collaboration with ENSCI and created waste management, reinvented sustainable tourism, integrated french experts in local communities, and photovoltaic equipment in high climate turbulences… In 2013 and 2014, we developped projects in remote villages in Ecuador, Tunisia and Togo such as: a primary school, water systems, growing pineapples, a mill, and many other innovative solutions.

Who is concerned ?

FeesThe cost of the course is assumed by the donation of ENPC Foundation and Paris-Est d.school which is supported by ANR (Agence Nationale de Recherche) as an IDEFI project. Student fees are drastically reduced (compare to real costs of 10000€ per student) and depend on their status: - Should they come from an academic partner of Paris-Est d.school (ESIEE, ENPC, EIVP, ENSAVT, UPEM), they will pay the fees of the initial institution - Should they come from another academic institution, the fees are to be defined. The student will have the status of an «auditeur libre» at ENPC.

Tunisia 2014 With no means for maintenance, Tunisian schools from rural areas are badly damaged. The team designed quick, cheap but sustainable and efficient solutions to change the everyday life of pupils from the school of Limaya (located 60km from Sfax) on health, waste management and sport.www.give-opportunisia.wix.com/give-opportunisia

«Focusing on a single school allows to radically change the every day life of those

pupils, but also to design solutions that can be implemented in every Tunisian schools.»

«Despite our very different backgrounds, we were all driven by the desire to innovate for an

emerging country such as Togo.»

«We aim to enable plants growth all year long in Pambamarca, not only for this year, or the next two years, but for many years to come.

And while plants are not grown yet, it’s us who have grown enormously: as people, as a team,

as agents of change.»

Togo 2014 Collecting rainwater, pineapples agriculture tools or the construction of a mill are all projects implemented in Togo thanks to the support and the dynamics of our local partner “Mission des Jeunes“.www.kisskissbankbank.com/ready-togo

Ecuador 2014To overcome the low amount of rainwater during summer, the team “Vamos Pambamarca“ implemented an alternative water storage and distribution system called Solid Rain. They created an Ecuadorian workgroup and a network of partners that are ensuring the adaptation of the product to the cultural and environmental requirements of the community allowing around 1000 people from Pambamarca not just to harvest their food but also to have surplus to trade in the market place. www.facebook.com/vamospambamarca
