ٱلرحيم من ٱلرح ٱهلل بسم bismi all¡hi alrra¦m¡ni

alrra¦¢mi

In the Name of Allah, the All-

beneficent, the All-merciful.1

ي كم من عدو il¡h¢ kam min àduwwin O my God, many an enemy إله

ٱوته ف عد ي سي تضى عل ¢inta¤¡ àlayya sayfa àd¡watih ٱن unsheathed the sword of his

hostility against me,

ته ة مدي وشحذ لي ظبwa sha¦adha l¢ übbata

mudyatih¢

honed his dagger's edge

against me,

ٱ ه و با حد ¢wa arhafa l¢ shab¡ ¦addih رهف لي ش sharpened the heads of his

weapons against me,

ومه م ٱتل س و ي ق ٱف ل د ¢wa d¡fa l¢ qaw¡tila sum£mih و mixed for me his deadly

poisons,

امه ٱئب سه صو ي ل د إ وسدwa saddada ilayya ¥aw¡'iba

sih¡mih¢ leveled at me his hitting arrow,

ى نم عن ولم ت ته ٱس ين ح عwa lam tanam ànn¢ àynu

¦ir¡satih¢ kept a sleepless eye on me,

ٱ مر ٱو ه ض و ك ٱلم ومنى ن يسwa a¤mara an yas£man¢

almakr£ha

and decided secretly to target

harm to me

ٱرته ف مر ذعا عنى ويجرwa yujarriàn¢ dhu`¡fa

mar¡ratih¢

and to make me taste the

deadly poison of his bitterness.

دح وٱ ٱلف ل ما ضعفي عن ٱحت ى ل نظرت إnaärta il¡ ¤a`f¢ àn i¦tim¡li

alfaw¡di¦i

[Amid all that] You considered

that I am too weak to bear

hardships,

ٱل ني وعجزي عن ن قصد م تصار م ن

اربته مح ب

wa àjz¢ àn al-inti¥¡ri mimman qa¥adan¢ bimu¦¡rabatih¢

I am too short to have aid

against him who aimed at

attacking me,

ي وٱ ٱن او ن ن م ير م ي في كث صد لي ووحدت رwa wa¦dat¢ f¢ kath¢rin mimman

n¡w¡n¢ wa ar¥ada l¢

and You perceived my

loneliness to confront many of

those who incurred my hostility

and laid in wait for me,

هم ٱفمي لم ل د صا ٱلر ي في ك مل ف ع

مثله ب

f¢m¡ lam u`mil fikr¢ f¢ al-ir¥¡di

lahum bimithlih¢

while I have not been ready to

give any thought to sitting in

ambush and retaliating.

ا تك ف و fa ayyadtan¢ biquwwatika يدتنى بقSo, You came to stand by me

with Your might,

دت ٱ تك وشد wa shadadta azr¢ binu¥ratika زري بنص made me strong through Your

support,

ه £wa falalta l¢ ¦addah وفللت لي حدnotched his sharpness against

me,

وحشده مع عديده عد ج ته ب وخذلwa khadhaltah£ ba`da jamì

àd¢dih¢ wa ¦ashdih¢

disappointed him although he

concentrated all his troops and

crowds,

ٱ عبى عليه و wa a`layta ka`b¢ àlayhi عليت ك You gave me the upper hand

over him,

إليه ه ائد ك ي من م ل د إ هت ما سد ووجwa wajjahta m¡ saddada ilayya

min mak¡'idih¢ ilayhi

directed toward him the same

traps that he had laid for me,

دته عليه د wa radadtah£ àlayhi ور and caused him to be engaged

with his own traps.

ف غليله £wa lam yashfi ghal¢lah ولم يشThus, he could not quench his

thirst,

د ولم تبر ٱت غيظه ٱز حزwa lam tabrud ¦az¡z¡tu

ghayïh¢

did not assuage the fury of his

anger,

امله وقد عض علي ٱ نwa qad à¤¤a àlayya

an¡milah£

bit his thumb [out of his malice

toward me],

ٱ ا قد ٱو ي ول ٱياه دبر م قت س خفwa adbara muwalliyan qad

akhfaqat sar¡y¡hu

and turned his back fleeing

after his pennons had failed.

مد يا رب ٱلح falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi فلك So, all praise be to You, O

Lord;

يغلب تدر ال ق min muqtadirin l¡ yughlabu من مYou are invulnerably

Omnipotent

ذي ٱ عجل و ي اة ال .wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu and prudently Forbearing ن

د د وآل محم م صل على مح¥alli àl¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li

Muhammadin

Bless Muhammad and the

Household of Muhammad

ائك م عم علنى لن ٱج ين و اك ٱلش ن wajàln¢ lina`m¡'ika mina

alshsh¡kir¢na

and include me with those who

are thankful for Your bounties

ين ٱك ٱلذ wa li-¡l¡’ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na وآلالئك من and those who permanently

mention Your graces.

ي وكم م اغ إله il¡h¢ wa kam min b¡ghin ن بO my God, many a tyrannical

oppressor

ائده مك ي ب ن ا ¢bagh¡n¢ bimak¡'idih بغ made me the target of his

oppressive trickeries,

ي ٱ نصب ل و ائده ٱك مص ¢wa na¥aba l¢ ashr¡ka ma¥¡'idih ش set the traps of his hunting for

me,

د رعايته ق ي تف ب ل ووكwa wakkala b¢ tafaqquda

ri`¡yatih¢ continuously spied on me,

ٱ يدته ضباو بع لط ٱلس اء ضب ي إ ل إwa a¤ba'a ilayya i¤b¡'a

alssabuì li§ar¢datih¢

and waylaid me like a beast

waylaying its prey



ته ص از ف ته ٱ الن ار تظ ن ¢inti¨¡ran lintih¡zi fur¥atih إ in waiting for seizing the best

opportunity [to catch me],

ملق ٱل اشة بش هر و يظ وهwa huwa yu¨hiru bash¡shata

almalaqi

While he was showing me

happy mien flatteringly

ير طلق ا غ بسط وجه ويwa yabsu§u wajhan ghayra

§aliqin

and displaying an uncheerful

face.

ا رٱ م يرته فل دغل س يت falamm¡ ra'ayta daghala

sar¢ratih¢

So, when You saw ill intention

of his inner self

بح م ته وق ي مل ف كه ي ش ل وى عليه نط ا ٱwa qub¦a m¡ in§aw¡ àlayhi

lishar¢kih¢ f¢ millatih¢

and the ugliness of his

determination against his

partner in religion,

ٱ و با لي في بغيه صبح مجلwa a¥ba¦a mujliban l¢ f¢

baghyih¢

and he became resolute in

tyranny against me,

ته الٱ م رٱركس ¢arkastah£ li'ummi ra'sih سه You threw him down headlong

ٱ نه من ٱو نيا اسه تيت ب سwa atayta buny¡nah£ min

as¡sih¢

and demolished his structure

from its foundation.

ته ف ع ¢fa¥ara`tah£ f¢ zubyatih ي زبيته فص So, You knocked him down

while he was in loftiness,

ته وى حف ي مه يته ف د ورwa raddaytah£ f¢ mahw¡

¦ufratih¢

made him fall in the bottomless

depth of his hole,

ٱب رج تر ا ل بق ه ط علت خد وج لهwa jaàlta khaddahu §abaqan

litur¡bi rijlih¢

caused his face to be a cover

of his foot’s dust,

ورزقه نه ي بد ته ف وشغلwa shaghaltah£ f¢ badanih¢ wa

rizqih¢

caused him to be engaged with

his body and his earnings,

ته بحجره ¢wa ramaytah£ bi¦ajarih ورمي hurled him with his own stone,

وتره ته ب نق ¢wa khanaqtah£ biwatarih وخ suffocated him with his own

rope,

اقصه مش ته ب ي ذك ¢wa dhakkaytah£ bimash¡qi¥ih و slaughtered him with his own

arrowhead,

ته ل وكبب ه نخ ¢wa kababtah£ limankhirih م overturned him to his nose,

ه نح دت كيده في د ¢wa radadta kaydah£ f¢ na¦rih ور turned his plot to his own neck,

ته ٱم ند ته ب ق ¢wa rabaqtah£ binad¡matih ورب lassoed him with his remorse,

اوفس ته س ¢wa fasa'tah£ bi¦asratih ته بح and stretched him with is

regret.

تخذٱ اس وته ف عد نخ اءل ب وتضfastakhdha'a wa ta¤¡'ala ba`da

nakhwatih¢

So, he became lowly and

dwindled after his arrogance,



ته ال عد ٱستط مع ب نق ٱ ¢wanqamaà ba`da isti§¡latih و was crushed after his

haughtiness;

ال ما ته ذلي ال ب ورٱ في ربق ح سdhal¢lan ma's£ran f¢ ribqi

¦ib¡latih¢

humble and captured in the

lasso of his trap

ل ٱ ان يؤم تى ك ٱل وته وم سط ا ي ه ني في ن يرٱallat¢ k¡na yu'ammilu an yar¡n¢

f¢h¡ yawma sa§watih¢

in which he expected to see me

in the days of his influence.

تك وال رحم ا رب ل وقد كدت يwa qad kidtu y¡ rabbi lawl¡

ra¦matuka

In fact, O my Lord, I was—had

it not been for Your mercy—

ٱ ته اح بي ما حل بس ن يحل an ya¦ulla b¢ m¡ ¦alla

bis¡¦atih¢

about to encounter the same as

he had encountered.

ٱج ين و اك ٱلش ائك من عم علنى لنwajàln¢ lina`m¡'ika mina

alshsh¡kir¢na



ين ٱك ٱلذ wa li-¡l¡'ika mina aldhdh¡kir¢na وآلالئك من and those who permanently

ته س ق بح ش اسد ي وكم من ح إلهil¡h¢ wa kam min ¦¡sidin

shariqa bi¦asratih¢

O my God, many an envier

choked with his regret

ي بغيظه ¢wa àduwwin shajiya bighayïh وعدو شج and an enemy became grieved

out of his fury,

نه قنى بحد لسا ,wa salaqan¢ bi¦addi lis¡nih¢ smit me with his sharp tongue وسل

نه وق عي م ي ب ن ¢wa wakhazan¢ bim£qi àynih ووخز pricked me with the inner

corner of his eye,

ٱميه مر ا ل ض علنى غ وجwa jaàlan¢ ghara¤an

limar¡m¢hi

made me the object of his

intentions,

ل فيه الال لم تز ي خ ن د وقلwa qalladan¢ khil¡lan lam tazal

f¢hi

and gird me with dispositions

that are still his.

ٱ بك ير تج ا رب مس ديتك ي ناn¡daytuka y¡ rabbi mustaj¢ran

bika

Therefore, I called upon You, O

my Lord, seeking Your shelter,

تك اب عة إج س ا ب ق ٱث w¡thiqan bisuràti ij¡batika و

having full confidence in the

immediateness of Your

response,



ى ما لم ٱ عل ولك ت ل ٱم فه ز تعرmutawakkilan àl¡ m¡lam azal

ataàrrafuh£

trusting in that which I am still

receiving from You;

اعك دف min ¦usni dif¡ìka من حسن namely, the excellence of Your

defense of me,

ما ٱ ال هد من ٱع يضط ه ال ى ظل ن ل وى إ

نفك ك

`¡liman annah£ l¡ yu¤§ahadu man aw¡ il¡ ïlli kanafika

having full knowledge that

whoever harbors under the

shade of Your protection will

never be persecuted,

ا دث من لج وٱ ٱلح ع قل ولن تق ى مع ل إ

ار بك تص ن ٱال

wa lan taqraà al¦aw¡dithu man laja'a il¡ ma`qili al-inti¥¡ri

bika

and whoever takes refuge in

the fortress of the seeking of

Your support will never be

exposed to the strikes of

misfortunes.

تنى من با ن قدرتك فحص ب سهfa¦a¥¥antan¢ min ba'sih¢

biqudratika

So, You safeguarded me from

his prowess with Your

omnipotence.

ذي ٱ و اة ال عجل ن .wa dh¢ an¡tin l¡ ya`jalu and prudently Forbearing ي

ائب م ي وكم من سح تهاإله ي ه جل و كil¡h¢ wa kam min sa¦¡'ibi

makr£hin jallaytah¡

O my God, many clouds of

misfortune You have dispersed,

تها مة مط ع اء ن م ¡wa sam¡'i ni`matin ma§artah وس much rain of bliss You have

poured,

ٱمة ٱ ل ك ٱو تهاوجد ¡wa jad¡wili kar¡matin ajraytah جري many streams of conferral You

have made flow,

ٱ ين ٱو هاع مست ٱث ط ¡wa a`yuni a¦d¡thin §amastah حد many springs of troubles You

have effaced,

تها ش ن اشئة رحمة ن وwa n¡shi'ati ra¦matin

nashartah¡

many launches of mercy You

have spread,

افية ٱ ة ع ن هاوج بست ¡wa junnati `¡fiyatin albastah ل many armors of wellbeing You

have adorned [us with],



ها ات كشفت ب ك ٱمر و وغwa ghaw¡miri kurub¡tin

kashaftah¡

many overwhelming calamities

You have removed,

ها ٱو رت ارية قد ور ج ¡wa um£rin j¡riyatin qaddartah م and many continual events of

goodness You have decided.

ا ته ذ طلب عجزك إ ¡lam tu`jizka idh §alabtah لم ت

They would never render You

impotent when You determined

them to happen,

ذ ٱ نك إ نع م مت هاولم ت دت رwa lam tamtani` minka idh

aradtah¡

and could never stop

responding to You when You

wanted them to be.

قت ي وكم من ظن حسن حق إلهil¡h¢ wa kam min ännin

¦asanin ¦aqqaqta

O my God, many an excellent

hope You have achieved,

الق جبر س إم wa min kasri iml¡qin jabarta ت ومن ك many breaking poverty You

have set,

لت و ادحة ح نة ف ك ومن مسwa min maskanatin f¡di¦atin

¦awwalta

many gross neediness You

have shunted,

عشت ن هلكة عة م ص ومن wa min ¥aràtin muhlikatin

naàshta

many destructive blows You

have revived (me from them),

ة ٱ ق wa min mashaqqatin ara¦ta رحت ومن مش and many hardships You have

relieved (me of them).

تسا عل ال ا تف م l¡ tus'alu àmm¡ tafàlu ل عYou cannot be questioned

concerning that which You do

ون وهم يسا .wa hum yus'al£na and they shall be questioned ل

قصك ما ٱ ن ي قت وال wa l¡ yanqu¥uka m¡ anfaqta نف That which You spend never

decreases You.



قد سئلت فا wa laqad su'ilta fa'a`§ayta عطيت ولWhen You have been

besought, You gave;

تدٱولم تسا اب wa lam tus'al fabtada'ta ت ل ف

and although You have not

been besought, You took the

initiative to give.

ا ٱ م اب فضلك ف ميح ب ٱست كديت وwastum¢¦a b¡bu fa¤lika fam¡

akdayta

When the door of Your favoring

was knocked, You have not

withheld.

ا ٱ ان ٱمتن اما و ع إن بيت إالabayta ill¡ in`¡man wa

imtin¡nan

You have insisted on nothing

but favoring and bestowal

ٱ انا و ال يا رب وإحس و تط بيت إالwa abayta ill¡ ta§awwulan y¡

rabbi wa i¦s¡nan

and You, O my Lord, have also

insisted on giving generously

and beneficently.

ٱ اتك و م ا لح اك ه نت ٱ بيت إالwa abaytu ill¡ intih¡kan

li¦urum¡tika

But as for me, I insisted on

nothing but violation of Your

prohibitions,

صيك ا ى مع ٱءٱ عل ر

ت ٱج wa ijtir¡'an àl¡ ma`¡¥¢ka و daring to commit acts of

disobedience to You,

دك يا لحدو عد ,wa taàdiyyan li¦ud£dika transgressing Your limits وت

wa ghaflatan àn wa`¢dika وغفلة عن وعيدك passing over Your threats,

ك ي وعدو عدو اعة ل وطwa §¡àtan liàduww¢ wa

àduwwika

and obeying Your and my

enemy.

اللي ي إخ ص نا ي و ا إله عك ي ن لم يم

ك الش ب

lam yamna`ka y¡ il¡h¢ wa n¡¥ir¢ ikhl¡l¢ bilshshukri

My failure to be thankful to You

has not made You, O my God

and Helper,

نك إحسا ام م an itm¡mi i¦s¡nika` عن إتstop perfecting Your favors on

me.

ذلك ني حجز كاب عن وال ٱرت

اخطك مس

wa l¡ ¦ajazan¢ dh¡lika àn irtik¡bi mas¡khi§ika

Likewise, this has not

prevented me from committing

sins that You dislike.

ذليل بد ام ع ق ٱ م هم وهذ ٱللall¡humma wa h¡dh¡ maq¡mu

àbdin dhal¢lin

O my God, this is the situation

of a humble servant [of You],

ال ترف لك ب وحيد ٱع i`tarafa laka bilttaw¦¢di ت who professes Your Oneness,

ٱ ي ٱو ف ير قص ت ال ب نفسه ك ق على ق ٱء ح دwa aqarra àl¡ nafsih¢ bilttaq¥¢ri

f¢ ad¡'i ¦aqqika

confesses of his failure to carry

out his duty towards You,

هد لك ب متك عليه وش نع وغ سبwa shahida laka bisub£ghi

ni`matika àlayhi

and testifies to Your ample

favoring on him,



ه ند دتك ع ا ميل ع £wa jam¢li `¡datika ìndah وجYour excellent habits in treating

him,

نك إليه ا wa i¦s¡nika ilayhi وإحسand Your bestowal of graces

upon him.

دي من فضلك ي وسي ا إله ي ي هب ل فfahab l¢ y¡ il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ min

fa¤lika

So, my God and Master, confer

upon me an amount of Your

benevolence

ا متك ٱم لى رح ا إ ب ريده سبm¡ ur¢duh£ sababan il¡

ra¦matika

that I can use as a path taking

me to Your mercy,

ٱ ما ٱو ه سل خذ اتك ت ض لى مر إ ج فيه عwa attakhidhuh£ sullaman

a`ruju f¢h il¡ mar¤¡tika

as a ladder by which I ascend

to Your satisfaction,

wa ¡manu bih¢ min sakha§ika من سخطك وآمن به and I can be secured from Your

wrath

ولك تك وط عز biìzzatika wa §awlika بin the name of Your might and

supremacy

د م ك مح نبي وبحق wa bi¦aqqi nabiyyika

Muhammadin

and in the name of Your

Prophet, Muhammad,

وآله عليه ٱهلل ى ¢all¡ all¡hu àlayhi wa ¡lih¥ صل may Your blessings be upon

him and his Household.

بد ي وكم من ع il¡h¢ wa kam min àbdin إلهMy God, many a servant [of

You]

سى وٱٱ موت م ٱل ب ي ك بح ف صams¡ wa a¥ba¦a f¢ karbi

almawti

is in eves and morns suffering

the agony of death,

در ٱلص جة ش wa ¦ashrajati al¥¥adri وح and the rattles of death,

ود ٱلجل نه عر م قش لى ما ت إ ظر ن ٱل وwalnnaäri il¡ m¡ taqshaìrru

minhu aljul£du

experiencing that which

shudders the skins



وب قل ٱل ;wa tafzaù lah£ alqul£bu and horrifies the hearts وتفزع له

ٱ و ه ذلك كل افية من نا في عwa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika

kullih¢ but I am safe from all that.

You]

سى وٱٱ عا م وج م قمي بح س صams¡ wa a¥ba¦a saq¢man

m£jaàn

is in eves and morns ailing and

feeling pain

ي ٱ ة ف ويل ن ,f¢ annatin wa àw¢lin with moans and wails وع

ه م ي غ ب ف قل ت ¢yataqallabu f¢ ghammih ي and is rolling over and over

with anguish;

يجد محيصا l¡ yajidu ma¦¢¥an الneither finding any way of

escaping it

اما وال غ طع يسي ٱبا وال شwa l¡ yus¢ghu §a`¡man wa l¡

shar¡ban

nor is he finding the taste of

any food or drink;

ٱ بدن و ٱل ة من صح نا في wa an¡ f¢ ¥i¦¦atin mina

albadani while I am enjoying body health

عيش ٱل المة من wa sal¡matin mina alàyshi وس and safe living.

ذلك نك كل .kullu dh¡lika minka All that [wellbeing] is from You م

ع علنى لن ٱج ين و اك ٱلش ائك من مwajàln¢ lina`m¡'ika mina

alshsh¡kir¢na





ي وك بد إله il¡h¢ wa kam min àbdin م من عO my God, many a servant [of

You]

سى وٱٱ ا م وب ائفا مرع بح خ صams¡ wa a¥ba¦a kh¡'ifan

mar`£ban

is in eves and morns fearful,

frightened,

ال ا وج ق ,mushfiqan wajilan terrified, scared مشف

اربا ٱ ه يد ,h¡riban §ar¢dan fugitive, runaway ط

ي مضيق ٱ ف نجح munja¦iran f¢ ma¤¢qin hiding in a tight burrow م

با ابئ ومخ مخ ٱل ة من wa makhba'atin mina

almakh¡bi'i or in an ordinary den;

ٱال اقت عليه ض ا قد به رض برحqad ¤¡qat àlayhi al-ar¤u

biru¦bih¡

while the entire spacious earth

has become too narrow to

secure him a place.

يجد حيلة l¡ yajidu ¦¢latan He thus cannot devise any plan ال

ما ى وال نج م .wa l¡ manj¡ wa l¡ mawan or find any shelter or retreat وى وال

ٱ مانا في ٱو افية من وط نة وع نيwa an¡ f¢ amnin wa

§uma'n¢natin wa `¡fiyatin

While I am living in security,

tranquility, and good health;

ذلك من ه ¢min dh¡lika kullih كل all of which is from You.

مد يا رب ف ٱلح falaka al¦amdu y¡ rabbi لك So, all praise be to You, O

Lord;

دي ي وسي ,il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ O my God and Master إله

بد wa kam min àbdin many a servant [of You] وكم من ع

سى وٱٱ وال م بح مغل ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a maghl£lan is in eves and morns enchained ص

ٱلحديد ال في ب ك mukabbalan f¢ al¦ad¢di م and shackled in iron shackles

ا ونه ب يرحم ال عدٱة ٱل يدي bi-ayd¢ alùdati l¡

yar¦am£nah£

in the hands of his enemies

whom show him no mercy;

ٱ من ٱ قيد ف وولده ¢faq¢dan min ahlih¢ wa waladih هله [and he is] separated from his

family members and children

وبلده ٱنه عا عن إخو قط ن مmunqa§iàn àn ikhw¡nih¢ wa

baladih¢

and detached from his friends

and country;

اعة با ع كل س وق ت تل ي ق ي قتلة يyatawaqqaù kulla s¡àtin bi-

ayyi qitlatin yuqtalu

each hour, he wonders what

kind of killing he will be killed

ا وب ل به مث ي مثلة يwa bi-ayyi muthlatin

yumaththalu bih¢

and what kind of mutilation he

will be mutilated.

ٱ ذلك و افية من نا في ع ه كلwa an¡ f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika

kullih¢ But I am safe from all this.

سى وٱٱ ب م ٱلح اسى بح يق ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a yuq¡s¢ al¦arba ص is in eves and morns

contending in war,



نفسه ل ب تا ٱلق ة اش ب ومwa mub¡sharata alqit¡li

binafsih¢

conducting the fighting by

himself,

ٱال ته انب قد غشي ٱء من كل ج عدqad ghashiyat-hu al-a`d¡'u min

kulli j¡nibin

and is surrounded by enemies

from all sides

ب ٱلح اح وآلة م ٱلر وف و ي الس بbilssuy£fi walrrim¡¦i wa ¡lati

al¦arbi

with swords, spears, and

instruments of wars.

ٱلحديد عقع في تق yataqa`qaù f¢ al¦ad¢di ي He is trembling inside iron [i.e.

his armor],

ده هو غ مج £qad balagha majh£dah قد بلand trying desperately to do

everything possible.

ف حيلة عر ي l¡ ya`rifu ¦¢latan الHe cannot find any further

means

هربا يجد م .wa l¡ yajidu mahraban and cannot find any escape وال

ات ٱقد ٱح الجر نف ب qad udnifa biljir¡¦¡ti د He is seriously experiencing

wounds

ٱ ا بدمه ط تشح ¢aw mutasha¦¦i§an bidamih و م or is totally covered with his

blood

ٱال ابك و ن ٱلس ta¦ta alssan¡biki wal-arjuli رجل تحت [struggling] under the toes of

the hooves and under feet;

ا ء بة من م ش ى تمن yatamann¡ sharbatan min m¡'in ي he desires a drink of water

لى ٱٱ و نظرة إ وولده هلهaw na¨ratan il¡ ahlih¢ wa

waladih¢

or a look at his folk and

children

ها قدر علي ي .l¡ yaqdiru àlayh¡ but he cannot get it ال


kullih¢ While I am safe from all that.

سى وٱٱ ار م بح ٱل ات م ي ظل بح ف صams¡ wa a¥ba¦a f¢ ülum¡ti

albi¦¡ri

is in eves and morns living in

the darkness of seas,

اح ي ٱلر ف ٱص و wa àw¡¥ifi alrriy¡¦i وع in the storms of winds,

ٱال ٱالو ل و وٱ ٱج ه و ;wal-ahw¡li wal-amw¡ji and in horrors and billows م

هالك ٱل ٱلغرق و ع وق ت يyatawaqqaù algharaqa

walhal¡ka

anticipating drowning and

perdition;

قدر على حيلة ي l¡ yaqdiru àl¡ ¦¢latin الhe does not have any means in

his power;

قة ٱ اع ى بص تل aw mubtalan bi¥¡ìqatin و مبor is afflicted with a

thunderbolt,

ق هدم ٱو ٱ ,aw hadmin aw ¦arqin demolition, burning و ح

,aw sharqin aw khasfin or choking, swallowing of the earth و خسف و شق ٱٱ

.aw maskhin aw qadhfin deformation, or striking و قذف و مسخ ٱٱ


kullih¢ While I am safe from all that.

سى وٱٱ ٱ م اف بح مس ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a mus¡firan صis in eves and morns on

journeys,

اخصا عن ٱ ش وولده هلهsh¡khi¥an àn ahlih¢ wa

waladih¢

far away from his family

members and sons,

اوز مف ٱل ي رٱ ف ي تح muta¦ayyiran f¢ almaf¡wizi م bewildered in deserts,

ٱم و ٱله ائم و به ٱل ش و وحو ٱل ها مع ائ تt¡'ihan maà alwu¦£shi

walbah¡'imi walhaw¡mmi

wandering with beasts, wild

animals, and pests,

يدٱ ٱ ف ;wa¦¢dan far¢dan alone and forlorn وحيد

ف حيلة عر ي l¡ ya`rifu ¦¢latan he can find no way out ال

تدي سبيال ه ي wa l¡ yahtad¢ sab¢lan والnor can he follow any right

path;

د ٱو متاٱ ا ببر ي و ح ذaw muta'adhdhiyan bibardin aw

¦arrin

or is suffering cold, hot

weather,

ي و جوع ٱٱ ,aw j£ìn aw ùryin hunger, nudity و ع

ٱئد ٱ د ٱلش من ه ير aw ghayrih¢ mina alshshad¡'idi و غ or other sorts of tribulations

ا ٱ م نه خلو م ا م ;mimm¡ an¡ minhu khilwun of which I am free ن

ه ذلك كل افية من ي ع ¢f¢ `¡fiyatin min dh¡lika kullih ف and I am released from all that.

دي والي وسي ي وم ¢il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid إله My God, Master, and Lord,



بد wa kam min àbdin many a servant [of You] وكم من ع

سى وٱٱ ائال م يرٱ ع ق بح ف ams¡ wa a¥ba¦a faq¢ran `¡'ilan ص is in eves and morns poor,

needy,

قا مل اريا م ,riyan mumliqan naked, deprived¡` ع

ٱ ور هج ا م ق ,mukhfiqan mahj£ran abortive, abandoned مخف

مآن ا ظ ائع ;j¡'iàn äm'¡na hungry, and thirsty ج

بفضل عليه ود من يع نتظر يyantaïru man ya`£du àlayhi

bifa¤lin

expecting someone to bestow a

favor upon him;

ندك ٱ بد وجيه ع aw àbdin waj¢hin ìndaka و ع or many a slave—who enjoys a

high standing with You

و ٱ ندك ه ى ع huwa awjah£ minn¢ ìndaka وجه من

or who is superior in

prominence than I am in Your

view

ٱ ادة لك و wa ashaddu ìb¡datan laka شد عب and more worshipping for You

than I am—

ٱ ور قه وال م ;maghl£lan maqh£ran is chained and subdued مغل

اء ن ع ٱل ال من تعب ل ثق م قد حqad ¦ummila thiqlan min taàbi

alàn¡'i

he has been overloaded with

the exhaustion of pains,

ة دي و عب ٱل ة ,wa shiddati alùb£diyyati the hardship of slavery وشد

ق ٱلر wa kulfati alrriqqi وكلفة the encumbrance of serfdom,

ٱلض قل بة وث ;wa thiqli al¤¤ar¢bati and the burden of imposition ي

الء شديد ٱ ب ى ب تل aw mubtalan bibal¡'in shad¢din و مب or is encountering a hard

tribulation

ك عليه ن بم إال بل له به ق الl¡ qibala lah£ bih¢ ill¡ bimannika

àlayhi

that he cannot stand except by

a favor that You bestow upon

him;

ٱ م و ع من ٱل مخدوم ٱل نا wa an¡ almakhd£mu

almuna``mu

while I am served, turning in

bliss,

م ك م ٱل افى مع ,almu`¡f¡ almukarramu relieved from that, honored ٱل

و فيه ا ه م افية م ي ع f¢ `¡fiyatin mimm¡ huwa f¢hi ف and released from what that

one suffers.



ذلك مد على ٱلح فلك ه كلfalaka al¦amdu àl¡ dh¡lika

kullih¢

So, all praise be to You, O

Lord;

دي ي وسي ,il¡h¢ wa sayyid¢ My God and Master إله

بد ٱ سى وٱوكم من ع صبح مwa kam min àbdin ams¡ wa

a¥ba¦a

many a servant [of You] is in

eves and morns

ٱ يد ط يدٱ ,shar¢dan §ar¢dan homeless, fugitive ش

ٱ ر ي تح ٱن م ير ,ayr¡na muta¦ayyiran confused, bewildered¦ ح

ائفا ا خ ائع j¡'iàn kh¡'ifan hungry, and afraid ج

ٱلبرٱري حاري و ٱلص ي ¢f¢ all¥¥a¦¡r¢ walbar¡r ف in deserts and wild lands;

ق قد ٱ ٱلبرد ح ٱلح و qad a¦raqah£ al¦arru walbardu ه he is burnt by hot and cold

weather

عيش ٱل ض من و في wa huwa f¢ ¤urrin mina alàyshi وه while he is suffering harsh

living,

ٱلحياة نك من ض wa ¤anakin mina al¦ay¡ti وbarely sufficient manner of

living,

قام ٱلم ل من ذ ;wa dhullin mina almaq¡mi and humble position و

ة س ح نفسه لى إ نظر yanüru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan ي he looks at himself with grief

نفع ض وال ى ها عل قدر ل ي الl¡ yaqdiru lah¡ àl¡ ¤urrin wa

l¡ nafìn

because he cannot make any

harm or benefit to himself;

ٱ ذلك و و من نا خل ه كلwa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika

kullih¢ but I am free from all that



مك دك وك و bij£dika wa karamika بجon account of Your

magnanimity and generosity.

mention Your graces;

متك ٱرحمنى برح war¦amn¢ bira¦matika وand have mercy upon me, by

Your mercy;

ا ٱ ين ي ٱحم ٱلر y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na رحم O most Merciful of all those who

show mercy.

eves and morns

ا ال مريض ,al¢lan mar¢¤an ailing, ill` علي

نفا مد قمي ;saq¢man mudnifan sick, and seriously unwell س

ا باسه ي ل ة وف عل ٱل ش ى ف علàl¡ furushi alìllati wa f¢

lib¡sih¡

[laid] on the bed of ailment and

dressed with it;

اال م ا وش مين ب ي قل ت يyataqallabu yam¢nan wa

shim¡lan

he turns right and left

[unrestfully]

ام ع ٱلط ة ف شيئا من لذ عر ي الl¡ ya`rifu shay'an min ladhdhati

al§§a`¡mi

and cannot find the good taste

of food

ٱب ش ٱل ة من لذ wa l¡ min ladhdhati alshshar¡bi وال or the good taste of drink;


ٱ و ض ا تطيع له يس ا ال نفع الl¡ yasta§¢ù lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡

nafàn


harm or benefit to himself.




kullih¢ While I am free from all that



ٱ إله إال ال نك ف بحا fal¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka نت س So, there is no god save You.

All glory be to You;

ابدين ع ٱل علنى لك من ٱج wajàln¢ laka mina al`¡bid¢na وand include me with the

worshippers of You,

ين اك ٱلش ائك من عم ن ولwa lina`m¡'ika mina

alshsh¡kir¢na

those who are thankful for Your

bounties,




Your mercy;

ا ٱ ين ي ٱحم ٱلر y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na رحم O most Merciful of all those

who show mercy.

a¥ba¦a


eves and morns

تفه ومه من ح ا ي دن وقد wa qad dan¡ yawmuh£ min

¦atfih¢ receiving the day of his death;

ٱ وت في ٱو ٱلم ملك نه حدق به وٱ عwa a¦daqa bih¢ malaku almawti

f¢ a`w¡nih¢

and the Angel of Death and his

assistants are gazing at him;

ضه ا وت وحي ٱلم ٱت ك الج س ع يyu`¡liju sakar¡ti almawti wa

¦iy¡¤ah£

he is thus suffering the agonies

and pains of death.

اال نا وشم مي اه ي ن تدور عيtad£ru àyn¡hu yam¢nan wa

shim¡lan

His eyes are turning right and

left,

لى ٱ إ نظر وٱي ائه ب وٱح ٱئه د و ئه ال خyanüru il¡ a¦ibb¡'ih¢ wa awidd¡'ih¢ wa akhill¡'ih¢

looking at his dear, beloved,

and intimate friends;

الم ٱلك نع من qad munià mina alkal¡mi قد مhe is restrained from ability to

talk



اب ٱلخط wa ¦ujiba àni alkhi§¡bi وحجب عن and withheld from speaking.

ة س ح نفسه لى إ نظر yanüru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan ي He looks at himself with grief

ا نفع ٱ وال ض ا تطيع له يس الl¡ yasta§¢ù lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡

nafàn







ٱ إله إال ال نك ف بحا fal¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka نت سSo, there is no god save You.

eves and morns

ون ج ٱلس س و بو ٱلح ائق ي مض f¢ ma¤¡'iqi al¦ub£si walssuj£ni ف in the straits of jails and

prisons

ا ا وحديده ذله ا و ه ب وكwa kurabih¡ wa dhullih¡ wa

¦ad¢dih¡

and in their agonies,

humiliation, and iron;

ٱوله ٱ تد و ي اع ته ني ا وزبا نه ٱyatad¡waluh£ a`w¡nuh¡ wa

zab¡niyatuh¡

controlled by their keepers and

guards;

يدري ٱ ال عل به ف ال يف ي حfal¡ yadr¢ ayyu ¦¡lin yufàlu

bih¢

so, he has no idea what will be

done to him



ٱ و ل به مث ي مثلة يwa ayyu muthlatin yumaththalu

bih¢

and which punishment will be

set upon him.

عيش ٱل ض من و في ه fa huwa f¢ ¤urrin mina alàyshi ف He is suffering harsh living

ٱلحياة نك من ض wa ¤ankin mina al¦ayati و and barely sufficient manner of

living.

ة س ح نفسه لى إ نظر yanüru il¡ nafsih¢ ¦asratan ي He looks at himself with grief

ا نفع ٱ وال ض ا تطيع له يس الl¡ yasta§¢ù lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡

nafàn



ٱ و و ه نا خل ذلك كل من wa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika

Muhammadin



ابدين ع ٱل علنى لك من ٱج wajàln¢ laka mina al`¡bid¢na و and include me with the

worshippers of You,

Your mercy,


who show mercy.

eves and morns

اء ٱلقض مر عليه ت ٱس qad istamarra àlayhi alqa¤¡'u قد permanently suffering under

the vicissitudes of time,



ٱ الء و ٱلب ,wa a¦daqa bih¢ albal¡'u surrounded by hardships حدق به

ارق ٱ ه وٱوف ٱء د اءه وٱو ءه حب ال خwa f¡raqa awidd¡'ah£ wa a¦ibb¡'ah£ wa akhill¡'ah£

departing his dear, beloved,

and intimate friends,

ٱ سى ٱو ال م ذلي يرٱ ق ٱ ح ير wa ams¡ as¢ran ¦aq¢ran dhal¢lan س

receiving the evenings while he

is imprisoned, humiliated, and

lowly,

ي ٱ ٱالف ار و كف ٱل ٱء يدي f¢ ayd¢ alkuff¡ri wal-a`d¡'i عدin the hands of the unbelievers

and the enemies

اال نا وشم مي نه ي ٱولو تد يyatad¡wal£nah£ yam¢nan wa

shim¡lan

who dominate him from the

right and the left;

ير ام مط ٱل ي qad ¦u¥ira f¢ alma§¡m¢ri قد حص ف he has been locked up in

cellars

الحديد ل ب ق wa thuqqila bil¦ad¢di وث and overloaded with iron

(shackles);

ٱلد اء ضي يرى شيئا من ا ال نيl¡ yar¡ shay'an min ¤iy¡'i

aldduny¡

he cannot see any of the light

of the world

ها من روح ;wa l¡ min raw¦ih¡ nor any of its rest وال


تط يس ا ال نفع ٱو ال ض ا يع لهl¡ yasta§¢ù lah¡ ¤arran wa l¡

nafàn



ٱ ه و ذلك كل و من نا خلwa an¡ khilwun min dh¡lika


مك دك وك و bij£dika wa karmika بجon account of Your





Omnipotent



Muhammadin




worshippers of You,


alshsh¡kir¢na


bounties,






Your mercy,


who show mercy.

والي ي وم ديإله ¢il¡h¢ wa mawl¡ya wa sayyid وسي My God, Lord, and Master;


a¥ba¦a

many a servant [of You] in eves

and morns

ا بة فيه الرغ ا ب ني ٱلد لى اق إ ٱشت وقد wa qad isht¡qa il¡ aldduny¡

bilrraghbati f¢h¡

has desirously longed for the

worldly pleasures

ى ٱ ل اله إ وم نفسه اط ب ن خil¡ an kh¡§ara binafsih¢ wa

m¡lih¢

that he risked himself and his

property

نه عليها صا م ¡ir¥an minhu àlayh¦ حout of his greediness of them

(i.e. these pleasures).

ت به س ٱلفلك وك قد ركب qad rakiba alfulka wa kusirat

bih¢

He thus embarked on a ship,

which was then broken;

ا مه بحار وظل ٱل و في آفاق وهwa huwa f¢ ¡f¡qi albi¦¡ri wa

ülamih¡

so, he is in the horizons and

murk of oceans;

ة س ح نفسه لى إ نظر yanüru il¡ nafsif¢ ¦asratan ي he looks at himself with grief

نفع ض وال ى ها عل قدر ل ي الl¡ yaqdiru lah¡ àl¡ ¤urrin wa

l¡ nafìn







ٱ إله إال ال بحاف fal¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka نك نت س So, there is no god save You.

bounties,





م ٱرحمنى برح war¦amn¢ bira¦matika تك وand have mercy upon me, by

Your mercy,


who show mercy.

eves and morns

اء ٱلقض مر عليه ت ٱس qad istamarra àlayhi alqa¤¡'u قد permanently suffering under

the vicissitudes of time

ٱ و الء حدق به wa a¦daqa bih¢ albal¡'u ٱلبand is surrounded by

hardships,

ٱال ار و كف ٱل ٱء و ;walkuff¡ru wal-a`d¡'u unbelievers, and enemies عد

ٱ ام و ه ٱلس يوف و ٱلس اح و م ٱلر خذته wa akhadhat-hu alrrim¡¦u

walssuy£fu walssih¡mu

and is taken up by spears,

swords, and arrows;

ا يع ص ل wa juddila ¥ar¢àn وجدand he was then knocked down

and thrown to the ground.

ٱال بت ش رض من دمه وقد wa qad sharibat al-ar¤u min

damih¢ The soil swallowed his blood

ٱ كلت و مه من لح ير ٱلط اع و ب ٱلسwa akalat alssib¡ù wal§§ayru

min la¦mih¢

and beasts and birds munched

his flesh.


kullih¢ But I am free from all that


magnanimity and generosity

قاق منى تح اس ب ¢l¡ bisti¦q¡qin minn ال although I do not deserve it.

ٱ إله إال ا ال نك ي بحا y¡ il¡ha ill¡ anta sub¦¡naka نت س O He save Whom there is no

god. All glory be to You;

Your mercy,


who show mercy;

يم تك يا ك wa ìzzatika y¡ kar¢mu وعزand by Your might; O All-

generous.

ا لديك ال م la'a§lubanna mimm¡ ladayka طلبن م I will insistently ask for that

which is with You,

ن عليك وال wa la'uli¦¦anna àlayka لح persist on You,

ن ي وال وك مد نح wa la'amuddanna yad¢ na¦waka دي and extend my hand towards

You,

ا إليك maà jurmih¡ ilayka مع جرمهalthough it has committed

offenses against You.

من ٱ ب ا رب ف وذ ي y¡ rabbi fabiman a`£dhu عO my Lord, whose protection

should I seek

من ٱ وب وذ wa biman al£dhu لand whose refuge should I

take?

ٱ ٱال ي إال l¡ a¦ada l¢ ill¡ anta نت حد لNone can stand for me save

You.

ي وٱٱ ن د تر ي ف ل و نت معAfataruddan¢ wa anta

muàwwal¢

Will You reject me while You

are my one and only

confidence

كلي ¢wa àlayka muttakal وعليك مت and upon You alone do I rely?

ى ساٱ ته عل ع ذي وض ٱل مك لك باس

ت قل است اء ف م ٱلس

as'aluka bismika alladh¢ wa¤a`tah£ àl¡ alssam¡'i

fastaqallat

I thus beseech You in the name

of Your Name that when You

put it on the heavens, they

raised,

ٱال ى ت وعل تق wa àl¡ al-ar¤i fastaqarrat رض فاسwhen You put it on the earth, it

settled down,

ست ف ل با ٱلج ى wa àl¡ aljib¡li farasat وعلwhen You put it on the

mountains, they became firm,

يل فا ٱلل ى wa àl¡ allayli fa-a¨lama ظلم وعلwhen You put it on the night, it

darkled,



ار استن ف ار ه ن ٱل ى wa àl¡ alnnah¡ri fastan¡ra وعل and when You put it on the

daylight, it lit up,

د ٱ م ل مح د وآ م ى مح ي عل ن تصلan tu¥alliya àl¡ Muhammadin

wa ¡li Muhammadin

[I beseech You] to bless

Muhammad and the Household

of Muhammad,

ٱ هاو ي كل وٱئج ي ح قضى ل ¡wa an taq¤iya l¢ ¦aw¡'ij¢ kullah ن ت satisfy all my wants,

ا ه بي كل نو ¡wa taghfira l¢ dhun£b¢ kullah وتغف لي ذ forgive all my sins,

يرها ب يرها وك ,agh¢rah¡ wa kab¢rah¡ the trivial and the significant¥ صغ

زق ٱلر ي من ع عل وس وتwa tuwassià àlayya mina

alrrizqi and expand my sustenance

ة ٱآلخ ا و ني ٱلد ف ش غنى به بل ا ت مm¡ tuballighun¢ bih¢ sharafa

aldduny¡ wal-¡khirati

to the scope that I can attain

the honor of this world and the

Hereafter.

ا ٱ ٱلر ي ين رحم y¡ ar¦ama alrr¡¦im¢na ٱحمO most Merciful of all those

who show mercy!

نت تع ٱس والي بك mawl¡ya bika istaàntu مMy Master, Your help do I

seek;

د وٱ م د وآل مح م ى مح عنىفصل علfa¥alli àl¡ Muhammadin wa ¡li

Muhammadin wa aìnn¢

so, bless Muhammad and the

Household of Muhammad and

help me!

تجرت فا ٱس ني وبك ¢wa bika istajartu fa-ajirn جرYour protection do I seek; so,

(please) protect me.

ٱ ادك و ب اعة ع تك عن ط اع ننى بط غwa ighnin¢ bi§¡àtika àn §¡àti

ìb¡dika

Through my obedience to You,

(please) suffice me from

obedience to Your servants.

مسا تك عن مساوب قك ل لة خلwa bimas'alatika àn mas'alati

khalqika

Through my entreaty to You;

(please) suffice me from

beseeching Your creatures.

ٱلغنى لى عز ٱلفق إ ذل قلنى من ن ٱ وwanquln¢ min dhulli alfaqri il¡

ìzzi alghin¡

Transfer me from the

humiliation of poverty to the

honor of richness

اعة ٱلط ى عز ل عاصى إ ٱلم ل ذ ومن wa min dhulli alma`¡¥¢ il¡ ìzzi

al§§¡àti

and from the humiliation of acts

of disobedience to You to the

honor of obedience to You.

قك ير من خل ى كث تنى عل ل قد فض فfaqad fa¤¤altan¢ àl¡ kath¢rin

min khalqika

You have really given me

preference over many of Your

creatures

ا م ٱ منك وك ود j£dan minka wa karaman جout of Your magnanimity and

generosity,

قاق منى تح اس ب ¢l¡ bisti¦q¡qin minn ال although I do not deserve it.



ى مد عل ٱلح ي فلك إله ه ذلك كلil¡h¢ falaka al¦amdu àl¡

dh¡lika kullih¢

My God, all praise be to You

for all that.
