Jeff Noble, Former Grand Marshal on Flag EtiquetteThe American flag

is the symbol of ourcountry and Jeff Noble,a veteran and the grandmarshal of Dublin’s2011 Independence Daycelebration, wants tomake sure it receives therespect it deserves.

“Our first president,George Washington, putit in a very special place,”said Jeff Noble, com-mander of the Wesley G.Davids Dublin Post 800American Legion, and2011 grand marshal ofDublin’s IndependenceDay Celebration said.

In 2011, Noble sharedsome common errorsand mistakes he and fel-low veterans see when itcomes to flag etiquette.

Many people rise upand salute the flag, andothers don’t, Noble said.

Flags are meant to beflown, Noble said, but of-ten people or businessesleave the flag out for toolong.

When it gets tatteredits needs to be replaced,he said.

Here are a few otherpointers Noble offeredfrom the U.S. Flag Code:

• The flag should belighted at all times, eitherby sunlight or by an ap-propriate light source.

• The flag should beflown in fair weather, un-less the flag is designedfor inclement weatheruse.

• The flag should neverbe dipped to any personor thing.

• The flag is flownupside down only as adistress signal.

• The flag should notbe used for any decora-tion in general.

Bunting of blue, whiteand red stripes is avail-able for these purposes.

The blue stripe of thebunting should be on thetop.

• The flag should neverbe used for any advertis-ing purpose.

It should not be em-broidered, printed orotherwise impressed onsuch articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, nap-kins, boxes, or anythingintended to be discardedafter temporary use.

Advertising signsshould not be attached tothe staff or halyard.

• The flag should notbe used as part of a cos-tume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patchcan be used on the uni-

form of military person-nel, firefighters, policeand members of patrioticorganizations.

• The flag should neverhave any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of anykind placed on it, or at-tached to it.

• The flag should neverbe used for receiving, holding, carrying, ordelivering anything.

• When the flag is low-ered, no part of it shouldtouch the ground or anyother object; it shouldbe received by waitinghands and arms.

• To store the flag itshould be folded neatly

and ceremoniously.• The flag should be

cleaned and mendedwhen necessary.

• When a flag is soworn it is no longer fitto serve as a symbol ofour country, it should bedestroyed by burning in adignified manner.

• When carried ina procession, the flagshould be to the right ofthe marchers.

• When other flags arecarried, the flag of theUnited States may becentered in front of theothers or carried to theirright.

• When the flag passesin a procession, or when

it is hoisted or lowered, all should face the flagand salute.

To salute, all personscome to attention. Thosein uniform give the ap-propriate formal salute.

Citizens not in uniformsalute by placing theirright hand over the heart

and men with head covershould remove it andhold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart.

Members of organiza-tions in formation saluteupon command of theperson in charge.

A closer lookThe flag should never be used for any adver-tising purpose. It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articlesas cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, oranything intended to be discarded after tem-porary use. Advertising signs should not beattached to the staff or halyard.
