Welcome Duke Children’s Superheroes to the 2012 Teddy Bear Ball!

What an honor it is to be among the league of heroes for Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center. Each guest here tonight holds an important role in the life of every child who comes to Duke Children’s. Proceeds raised from Teddy Bear Ball generate funding to benefit world-renowned programs led by our pioneers of research. You help us deliver compassionate, family-centered care to our patients. You provide the necessary funds to teach future pediatric leaders.

Duke Children’s is filled with creative thinkers pushing forward innovations that help our patients today while at the same time redefining approaches in children’s medicine. Duke University launched Duke Forward, Partnering for the Future campaign in September, and we invite you to join us in leading pediatric health care.

Many individuals and corporations have demonstrated their commitment to the betterment of children’s health here tonight. The 2012 Teddy Bear Ball is proudly presented by International Traders Inc. of Rocky Mount and Duke Children’s National Board of Advisors members Jim and Susan Sabiston for the third year in a row. This evening we are also joined by our beloved friends Jeff and Gregg Foxworthy whose devotion to children is immeasurable.

Tonight we will celebrate Duke Children’s superheroes and the many elements that establish Duke Children’s as one of the best children’s hospitals in the United States. To our special hosts, sponsors, volunteers and dedicated friends, thank you for your on going support of the research, education and family-centered patient care that makes Duke Children’s a place of heroic acts to many. Thank you for being our superheroes.

Because nothing matters more.

Legendary comedian and actor Jeff Foxworthy has brought laughter to millions through his hometown brand of “redneck” humor and is one of the most respected and successful comedians in the country. He is the largest selling comedy-recording artist in history and

a multiple Grammy Award nominee. Jeff has executive produced numerous television series and is a New York Times best-selling author. Widely known for his redneck jokes, his act goes well beyond that to explore the humor in everyday family interactions and human nature, a style that has been compared to Mark Twain’s.

Jeff and his wife Gregg began their journey with Duke Children’s through Jeff’s brother, a former Duke football player. During a visit, Jeff and Gregg took a tour of Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center, spending time visiting with the children and their families. After that, the Foxworthys, as Jeff likes to say, “were hooked” and became chairs of the Duke Children’s Classic, a celebrity golf tournament benefiting Duke Children’s.

Jeff and Gregg have a lasting impact on our youngest patients and their families, dedicating more than 15 years of service to Duke Children’s. They are truly part of the Duke Medicine family. During their many visits to Durham, Jeff and Gregg delight patients and families with their long and heartwarming visits to Duke Children’s Hospital. Room by room, they take their time bringing smiles and laughter to each patient. As co-chairs of the Duke Children’s Classic, they helped raise more than $6 million for pediatric research and care.

Jeff and Gregg have returned as the 2012 Teddy Bear Ball celebrity hosts and are honorary campaign chairs of Duke Children’s campaign. Jeff and Gregg have two daughters, Jordan and Jules, who share their parents’ big hearts for important causes.

The three fundamental areas of impact are education, research and care. Join Duke Children’s as we propel the future of medicine forward.

Under the mentorship of leading doctors, nurses, researchers and

physician-scientists, Duke Children’s is building the future of

medicine and training the next generation of medical professionals.

Duke medical students are developing a greater understanding of

research and care through an integrative, multi-disciplinary

approach. Duke Children’s seeks to prepare health care

professionals to lead change in medicine and compassionate care.

Leading EducationArea of Impact:

Ann M. Buchanan, MD, MPH, was the first pediatric

infectious diseases global health fellow funded to

work in Moshi, Tanzania, for the final two years of

her fellowship. In Moshi, Dr. Buchanan worked on a

number of research projects focusing on HIV-infected

children and their co-infections, and prevention of

mother-to-child transmission of HIV. As a resident

fellow in education, Dr. Buchanan extended Duke

Children’s reach beyond Durham to impact the care

of children in Africa. Through her work with HIV-

exposed babies, Dr. Buchanan adopted a baby boy

whose mother later died from complications of HIV

and hepatitis. Dr. Buchanan is now a member of the

Duke pediatric faculty and has remained in Moshi to

continue her valuable work in that community.

Duke Children’s distinguished team of leading physician- scientists is building a pipeline of science to impact the future of human health. As pioneers of new treatments and solutions, Duke Children’s world-renowned research is delivering medicine that changes the world. From bench to bedside, Duke Children’s continues to drive discovery and advance the future of pediatric health care.

Jayla Turner was born without a thymus, an

essential gland that produces disease-fighting white

blood cells in a human’s immune system. She was

soon diagnosed with complete DiGeorge Syndrome,

a rare and complex disorder. Jayla’s family found

hope at Duke Children’s, the only place in the world

offering a life-saving thymus transplant, which was

pioneered by Louise Markert, MD, PhD. Slivers of

thymus tissue are removed from babies with

developed immune systems, and are placed in the

thigh of the DiGeorge patient to generate

infection-fighting T-cells. Jayla’s surgery was a

success, and now she is a healthy kindergartener

living without fear of germs.

Duke Children’s culture of compassionate care tends to the complete health and well-being of the patient and family. This comprehensive model of care addresses all aspects impacting a patient’s well-being, including the physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual needs. Duke Children’s patient and family-centered approach is revolutionizing the delivery of care.

Josh Paryz is a smart, witty nine-year-old who is as

fearless as they come. In 2010 Josh was diagnosed

with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common

type of childhood cancer, affecting the white blood

cells and bone marrow. Josh was immediately

scheduled for surgery and began the intense regime

of chemotherapy. He is now in the third year of

chemotherapy, and though the procedures are painful

and the side effects of all the drugs are staggering,

Josh walks into clinic with a wave and a smile for

everyone he sees. He brings his own toys to share

with “kids who are scared” and is always concerned

when he hears a child cry. Josh is a shining example

of the power of a positive attitude and strength in

combatting adversity.
