Dutch Design Double

In September and October 2010, Utrecht and Amsterdam are joining forces for the third time and lots of interesting projects on Dutch design will be bundled under the umbrella of Dutch Design Double. This year‘s edition revolves around the famous and influential Dutch designer, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964).

Rietveld is renowned mostly for his chairs, yet his oeuvre is much broader and includes more than a hundred buildings and a variety of furniture. This diversity is also a central theme in this year‘s Dutch Design Double.

Because Utrecht has been declared 2010 ‘Rietveld Year’, the Centraal Museum is exploring Rietveld‘s life and work within the broader context of his era in the large retrospective Rietveld‘s Universe. UTRECHT MANIFEST (UM) / MoDeRnisMTODAY is organizing a symposium in De Pastoe Fabriek on the role of Rietveld in the development of social design – design from the perspective of the user.

In Amsterdam, UM / MoDeRnisMTODAY is holding lectures in the Stedelijk Museum on research carried out into Rietveld‘s aluminium chairs; there‘s a ‘Rietveld room’ at Elle Inside Design; and it‘s also possible to visit iconic Rietveld buildings in both Amsterdam and Utrecht. Plus there‘s lots more Rietveld fun to be had; details of which you‘ll find in this programme.

Asides from the Rietveld theme, there are a number of other interesting design-related projects taking place. Think DARE #5, the graduation exhibition by Masters students from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) or De Woonbeurs Amsterdam at the Amsterdam RAI.

The full programme overview of which – of course – Rietveld is pivotal can be found on the following pages, interspersed with Q&As from several Dutch Design Double programmers. And for the latest updates, please visit:

Every month around 500 business in the Netherlands go bankrupt. But where do their products go? For the project Saved by Droog, the Droog Design Foundation challenged designers to create new products out of handkerchiefs, dog baskets, wallets and other items seized during liquidations. During this year‘s Milan Design Week, a leading international furniture and interior design fair, the Centraal Museum acquired 19 products from this enormous collection. In doing so, the museum addresses the critical reflection on consumer society. This acquisition is an important addition to the Droog collection, already held by the Centraal Museum.

The Groene Honden (Green Dogs) are returning to their homebase of Utrecht to present the work of young designers from the city. Groene Honden Presents… explores the relationship between Utrecht and her designers during the first ever design exhibition to be held in the Stadhuis (City Hall). From table to lamp and from jewellery to cabinet, the show conveys an image of the current developments in product design of Utrecht. Participants are Rosalie Bak, Jana Flohr, Jonas Samson, Lola Hesp, Manon de Bruijn, Sam van Veluw and Suzanne Rietdijk.

Every year, hundreds of Belgian and Dutch students take on the challenge of creating a winning design for HEMA. This year is the 23rd time that the HEMA Design Competition has been organised with the brief: design an authentic HEMA product, which makes it easier and more fun for people to get out and about. More than 280 creative ideas were submitted by young design talent, a selection of which can be seen in the display cases of Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam (Amsterdam Public Library). They include the ‘vrachtpatser’ by René Bijsterveld, which was awarded first prize by the jury, as well as the nominations for the public prize. By staging the annual design competition, HEMA wants to contribute to the practical experience of students. Many up-and-coming talents have taken part in the competition in recent years – and the best designs became real HEMA heroes.

MoDeRnisM toDaY4 September – 22 October 2010

From the beginning of the twentieth century, followers of Modernism have strived for the creation of ‘a new world for new people‘. The initiative MoDeRnisMTODAY concentrates on the role that Modernism has always played in present-day art and culture. Out of a sense of urgency that is currently felt in design disciplines, its roots are being looked at again – especially from a perspective that can be termed ‘Social Design’. The initiative wants to contribute to the actual discussion about this subject with a number of lectures.

MoDeRnisMTODAY is part of UTRECHT MANIFEST, biennialfor social design. DUTCH DESIGN DOUBLE, PASTOE, RIETVELD YEAR, THONET and VOLA sponsor the activities.

geRt stAAlAdvisor, utrecht Manifest biennale for social Design

what would you say is typically Rietveld? can you describe it in 5 words?Small spaces become infinitely big.

what is your favourite Rietveld design? The recording of the speech Rietveld made in 1964 when accepting his honorary doctorate from the Institute of Technology in Delft (now TU Delft). You can hear a distinctly uncomfortable Rietveld read from a text that he hardly seemed to understand at times and, in any case, wasn‘t written by him. It was a beautiful, touching attempt to garner academic recognition from Delft‘s engineering elite, while the ghostwriter (Truus Schröder?) hadn‘t taken into account a speaker whose quality didn‘t emphatically lend itself to his theoretical or rhetoric talents. By making, Rietveld developed his thinking (and not vice versa). That must be a very comforting thought for many contemporary designers.

Do you think that Rietveld contributed to the notion/development of social design? For Rietveld, design is ‘social’. That we now have to so explicitly add the word indicates to me that design has cut itself loose from its original meaning, especially in the last decade. When the composition of Rietveld‘s famous Berlin chair didn‘t quite meet the wishes of his mother who liked to knit in it, the architect was instantly prepared to rearrange the horizontal and vertical planks in such a way that the chair would support her knitting activity better. Designers try to meet people‘s needs.

how does Utrecht Manifest relate to the Rietveld theme? When Utrecht Manifest cautiously started in 2005, it was clear that we wanted to develop a biennale with a substantial agenda; an event that sought to inquire what design meant for society. Little by little, we arrived at the theme of ‘social design’, and I think we are still following in Rietveld‘s footsteps.

what programme do you have at Dutch Design Double? On 21 October, I am chairing the Transforming Rietveld symposium. The meeting is about the renewal of Rietveld‘s contribution to the Hoograven district in Utrecht – the only social housing he developed. After half a century, it‘s time to review this part of his oeuvre. Not only does it deserve to be restored as an object of art and cultural history in itself, but also on the basis of the quality that the homes and housing blocks now have in a completely changed socio-economic environ-ment. In other words, as functional living environments in a society that, for some time now, no longer has the characteristics of the resurrected Netherlands in which Rietveld situated his design.

contain social housing that Gerrit Rietveld designed. This symposium looks at the renovation and/or remodel-ling possibilities of Rietveld‘s legacy in general, in particular on his social housing project in Hoograven. Lectures by Kenneth Frampton, Hubert Jan Henket, Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner. Moderated by Gert Staal. In cooperation with De Pastoe Fabriek.

Dutch lecture: Rietveld‘s experiments – New Perspectives on Dutch Design: Rietveld‘s aluminum chairs as a case study.

The Stedelijk Museum has a long tradition in show-ing and collecting work by Gerrit Rietveld. He was represented in group exhibitions from the end of the 1920s and, from the 1950s, prominent presentations were organized about his work and that of De Stijl. In 1950, the Stedelijk Museum bought an aluminium armchair from Rietveld himself. It is still one of the highlights from the collection that consists of more than 110 Rietveld pieces. Later on, three similar chairs were brought to light. Recently, these four chairs were extensively studied by an art historian (Rob Driessen), a restorer (Rietveld specialist, Jurjen Creman), and researchers at the Instituut Collectie Nederland (The Netherlands Insitute for Cultural Heritage). The remark-able results of this investigation will be presented during this afternoon. What can we learn from this case study for future research projects in the field of design and other disciplines? Starting from themes like the search for a chair made of one piece, the relation between unique items and mass-produced articles and experimenting with various materials, the theme will shift to design that is more contemporary. Designer Joris Laarman will go more deeply into some of these themes on the basis of his own work.Lectures by Rob Driessen, Jurjen Creman and Joris Laarman (with a proviso). Moderated by Ingeborg de Roode. In cooperation with Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

english lecture: Modernism in Russia – How is Modernism in Russia currently being regarded by architects and designers?

The exhibition Matisse to Malevich. Pioneers of Modern Art from the Hermitage is taking place at the Hermitage until 17 September. However, Russia played not only an important role in the field of modern visual arts in the first decade of the 21st century, but also in the development within (architectural) design. In fact, similar ideas about the design of ‘a new society for new people’ existed in the Netherlands (De Stijl), Germany (Bauhaus) and Russia (Wchutemas). Through personal contributions by designers and architects, such as Mart Stam and Hannes Meyer, this body of thought spread and was transformed into tangible results. Lectures by Ivan Nevzgodin and Yuri Avvakumov. Moderated by Gert Staal. In cooperation with Hermitage Amsterdam.

english symposium: Transforming Rietveld – The restoration, renovation or transformation of Rietveld‘s social housing?

Utrecht Manifest explores the development of contem-porary design from a socio-political perspective. This also applies to Modernism from the beginning of the last century – of which Utrecht-born architect/designer Gerrit Rietveld was a figurehead; a sort of leitmotif. Although the relevance of design for society and the economy over previous years is getting more attention, the link between the cultural sphere and that of everyday society is, at the moment, not obvious. An integral part of Utrecht Manifest 2009 was Hoograven Invites You, a research project on Social Urban Design under the direction of architect Alfredo Brillembourg and Hubert Klumpner. For this, an investiga-tion was carried out into the development opportunities of the Utrecht district of Hoograven; the only area to

what would you say is typically Rietveld? can you describe it in 5 words?Spartan, fumbling, IKEA… is three also OK? Spartan in that there are not many screws in them. Rietveld‘s crate furniture is pre-IKEA. And you can assemble them yourself.

Do you own anything by or about Rietveld?A few years ago, I made all his crate furniture in my backroom; by sticking high-gloss laminate onto MDF, I managed to obtain the exact thickness of the original plank that Rietveld used. While you‘re busy making them you‘re not actually aware that you can suddenly construct a highly aesthetic piece of furniture from a pile of non-descript planks.

who would you say was the contemporary Dutch, or netherlands-based, Rietveld?Certainly not Piet Hein Eek. Dick van ‘t Hoff also doesn‘t come close. In fact, now that I think about it, no one actually.

you are head of design at the Rietveld Academie. Apart from the fact that you are in a building made by him, do you also follow his design philosophy when teaching?Besides developing a nice concept, it‘s also good if this is reflected in consistent high aesthetics.

what would you say is the vision/design philosophy of the present generation of designers? Do you see a constant thread? is there something that connects them? or not? What I gather from my Dutch design colleagues is that they ‘simply want to make beautiful things‘. In doing so, you don‘t really, in fact, take any responsibility. You can’t have a debate about it: it’s good because it’s beautiful, so keep your mouth shut. You can’t really call that a philosophy, even though they do pretend to want to improve the world. Recently, I asked a designer what his intentions were. His answer? ‘To make a shitload of money.’ There‘s a strange kind of romance surrounding the self-made product. If you‘ve put 100,000 hours into the casting, sanding and polishing of a chair, it suddenly becomes beautiful and virtuous because you can see all the work that‘s gone into it. But the craftsman would just laugh in your face if you thought that it was him who had put hours and hours of monotonous work into making the chair. He wants the process to be as efficient as possible so he gets other people to do it. These new sweatshops are filled with HBO graduates who actually enjoy it. It‘s shocking, but the harsh reality.

what programme do you have at Dutch Design Double? At the moment, it‘s all a bit vague. Last year designLAB in the Van Abbe Museum examined the dynamics of Dutch Design Week. I imagine DDD is a logical follow-up to this.

This exhibition offers an overview of the work of German graphic designer and illustrator Ilka Helmig. It consists of three-dimensional sculptures and installations from everyday material, such as textiles and wood. Helmig plays with reality to create a fictitious state. The Toonkamer is a showroom in which 35 top-notch design brands will be presenting themselves within the industrial confines of the Pastoe Fabriek, Utrecht.

Traditional cartography, as we know it, encompasses mostly geographical, economic and political informa-tion. Borders form dividing lines between areas, and inhabitants are no more than abstract group data. When we visit an unknown territory though, we experience so much more than just geographical facts. Mapping for Tourists makes visible the invisible in Amsterdam-Noord. Instead of statistical information, Mapping for Tourists puts experiences and stories on the map. Part of Utrecht Manifest – Biennial for Social Design 2009, the project is an inquiry into how we can live differently; what kind of change is necessary in the contemporary domestic sphere; and how art and design practice can engage in this process. Several of the participating artists, designers, architects, and theorists will share their mid-term reflections on their time spent in the apartment. what would you say is typically Rietveld? can you describe it in 5 words?Social, industrial, simple, geometric and open.

what is your favourite Rietveld design? To my great shame, I have to confess that I have never been inside the Rietveld Schröder House – even though I have lived in Utrecht for almost 20 years. However, during my education in arts policy and management, I saw a video in which you were led through the house and the open structure of the house became visible. I thought the window at the corner of the house – where the vertical frame has been replaced so the corner dis-appears when the windows open – was really special. Rietveld’s ensuing architectural designs were more natural and sober in their colour use and appeal to me more. Like the pavilion in the Kröller-Muller Museum in Otterlo, for example. That design is more in line with the work of architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe, of which I am a huge fan.

Do you own anything by or about Rietveld?Amongst my collection of postcards, I have one of the Rietveld

Schröder House.

who would you say was the contemporary Dutch, or netherlands-based, Rietveld?I would say furniture designer Piet Hein Eek. Just like Rietveld, Eek often opts for simple materi-als and non-fussy designs.

Do you feel that Rietveld is still relevant to the current generation of students? The current generation of students work in a different way to Rietveld and cite themes such as sustainability, materials, experimentation and research as being relevant to them. At the same time, Rietveld is – if you touch on it in conversation – an interesting subject. I would rather place Rietveld in a line of development than consider his relevance in the 21st century per se.

what programme do you have at Dutch Design Double?

We have three programmes: Eject 2010, DARE and the HKU Design Route. I am directly involved in the last one. Last year, the graduation work of the Industrial and 3D-Design departments was on display in ateliers at 20 different places in Utrecht’s city centre. This year, there’s going to be another design route – hopefully the start of a new tradition. Work by the new lighting product designers from HKU will also be shown. All the work was on display at the end of June for the graduation exhibition. It will be quite a challenge to find a beautiful place for so many great designs. On 13 October, it will be apparent whether or not we have succeeded!

Great buildings have their secrets. There are forgotten rooms, hidden corners and unexpected sounds; the Gerrit Rietveld Academy is no exception. The main building of the academy was completed in 1967 but since then it has undergone numerous changes. Many of the elements in the building have been replaced, altered or thrown away, leaving parts that no longer serve their original purpose and have no function at all: they remain as leftovers of the many activities that have taken place here. Every part of the building has a story, and some stories have lasted longer than others. The building’s past and the stories it has generated have all influenced one another over time – consequently blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction in the building’s own history. The Audio Tour will guide you through the academy, helping you discover and learn more about the life of this remarkable building. Get your audio tour at the reception of the Rietveld Academy. Worldwide, there is a need for information and inspiration regarding innovation in materials. The challenge lies in saving natural material and energy sources, reducing waste streams, eliminating toxic emissions and recycling waste – in a natural or techni-cal way. And all that comes within the confines of sustainability, ensuring that future generations won’t be burdened by the actions of the present generation. The subject of sustainability still causes a lot of confusion. Via an exhibition, lecture and workshop, Architectuurcentrum Aorta (Aorta Architecture Centre) are aiming to clarify this topic. For the exhibition, Materia are showing one hundred material samples from the collection of innovative, and above all, sustainable materials. While during the lecture, Els Zijlstra, founder of Materia, will elaborate on how smart materials can add value to design, as well as covering many remarkable examples of special materials in relation to structures in nature. Is the designer actually aware of what the possibilities are? Finally, using some samples of sustainable materials, the audience – organised into small groups – will be challenged to make the ultimate design.

In 2010, the foundation and exhibition of Via Milano New Dutch Design will have been in existence for 10 years. Over the past few years, the exhibition has turned into a permanent fixture in the world of design-ers. That‘s why, alongside the annual exhibition at the Woonbeurs, the foundation wants to show an overview of the developments in Dutch Design during this time. Which products have since become a success and which have been a stimulus for further development or application? Does a constant thread run through all these designs and can this collection form a blueprint for the classification of ‘Dutch Design’?Around 500 products have been exhibited in the last 10 years. A selection of them will be on view in the Oude Kerk, offering a unique insight into the develop-ments that Dutch design has undergone. Moderated by Ingeborg de Roode (Industrial Design Curator at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam). Exhibition design by Studio Laurens van Wieringen.

what would you say is typically Rietveld? can you describe it in 5 words?Experiment and craftmanship. Simple-to-produce furniture.

what is your favourite Rietveld design?Although when it comes to Rietveld everyone automatically thinks of his Red and Blue Chair from 1918, I feel that design is overshadowed by his Buffet Table which he created a year later: a seemingly loosely-piled number of wooden slats and planks that, together, make a literally balanced cabinet. Here, function and form merge together in an almost poetic way. What‘s more, I still think that the academy that‘s named after him – with its monumental light spaces – is still a building that demands admiration for a design that totally reflects its function.

Do you own anything by or about Rietveld?Asides from memories of his work, I don‘t own anything by Rietveld.

what programme do you have at Dutch Design Double?10 Years Via Milano New Dutch Design. In 2001, at the initiative of designer Jacob de Baan, the BNO decided to bring together – in one joint presentation – the most remarkable and talked about Dutch designs that premiered in that year at Milan Design Week. At the time, Dutch designers were all the rage on the world stage. However, the work – often either in prototype stage, as a small series or as one-offs – often disap-peared straight into collections or went to presentations abroad. As a result, the Dutch public only got to know about the current developments in Dutch interior design through the media. This year, the Via Milano New Dutch Design Foundation is organising the 10th edition of this compelling exhibition, once more at the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam. To celebrate this jubilee, the committee – headed by Hedy d‘Ancona – decided to compile an overview of the highlights from 10 years of Via Milano. The show has been curated by Ingeboorg de Roode, industrial design curator at the Stedelijk Museum (see page 34) and member of the selection committee during the first edition of Via Milano. It promises to be an impressive overview with known, and in some cases, now-classic designs.

When people hear the name ‘Rietveld’ they usually think of the Rietveld Schröder House or the Rietveld Chair, rather than the Utrecht-born architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld. As a member of the artist’s circle De Stijl and a pioneer of the architectural movement Nieuw Bouwen, his influence spread worldwide in the Roaring Twenties and Thirties. What we don’t often realise is that Rietveld’s influence can still be seen in our houses, furniture and everyday utensils. In fact, these functional and democratic designs are internationally renowned. The speakers in this lecture series view Rietveld as a pioneer, an architect, child of his time and as a constant influence for present-day designers.

Studium Generale is the podium of the University of Utrecht/Utrecht University, in which everyone is offered the chance to follow an accessible programme at an academic level without previous knowledge.

Prestigious interior brands and trend-setting designers are moving into the Lloyd Hotel Amsterdam for three days. The theme this year is: the atelier, the workplace of designers and furniture makers. Brands such as Moroso and Gelderland, designers such as Kiki van Eijk, Wieki Somers, Scholten & Baijings, Christien Meindertsma and Richard Hutten will be exhibiting their most beautiful work. There are also presentations by, amongst others, the Design Academy Eindhoven, the Zuiderzee Museum, the Centraal Museum Utrecht and the Textielmuseum Tilburg. This year, there are many more unique products on sale in the Temporary Design shop, selected by ELLE Wonen. One highlight is the ELLE Deco Design Talent Award by Montis, where young talents were invited to design a side table for Montis + design. The work of the three finalists is on display inside the Lloyd Hotel, while there‘s also plenty to explore outside the hotel. Think: exciting collaborative projects and unique shows in surprising locations in the city.

The 18th edition of Woonbeurs Amsterdam at the end of September heralds the start of the interior design season. As well as featuring the newest trends and latest scoops, there will be exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations and a Woontheater (Lifestyle Theatre) with daily, inspirational lectures by trend watchers and designers. But there’s more. Dutch industrial designers, who were in Milan this spring, have joined forces for the Via Milano platform. Homegrown design talent can be seen in the show, NL Design. Home and garden/outdoors magazines vtwonen, 101 Woonideeën, Eigen Huis & Tuin, ariadne at Home and More Than Classic will be presenting realistic homes; always one of the highlights of the fair. While Home and Garden, Tuin & Co and Seasons magazines will be showing ways of turning outdoor living into an veritable experience.

Every year, Dutch interior and product designers present their latest collections to the public and international press in Italy. In the Netherlands, however, these products are never shown as an ensemble for a large audience. That is, except at Via Milano New Dutch Design at the Woonbeurs in Amsterdam, which celebrates 10 years this year. Annually, an expert commission makes a selection from the new Dutch designs that were presented earlier in the year in Milan. In doing so, new noteworthy Dutch designers and manufacturers are given a podium to show their work. The interior products also form the inspiration for the design of the exhibition.

What more can you create besides bags out of old advertising and scaffolding banners? Designers, inventors and other creatives were invited to a come up with a surprising solution. Entries included a mix of chairs, lamps and tents, and were judged by an expert jury which included designer Tejo Remy: the winning design will be announced during the opening. The exhibition is a follow-up project to Façade, an art exhibition on large-format scaffolding banners that was held in Amsterdam last year as part of Dutch Design Double/Inside Design. Following the event, the canvases will be cut up and reworked into the winning RE:FRAME product. The project is the initiative of 60 layers of cake foundation and supported by Stichting Doen.

During the Rietveld Eyecatchers series, it’s possible to take a look round buildings designed by Rietveld which aren’t normally open to the public: these are usually private homes. Most of these beautiful villas lie hidden in the countryside in the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Gooi- en Vechtstreek regions. In this one weekend, a record number of these homes, in and around Amsterdam and Utrecht, can be visited! All of these villas can be found on the website www.rietveldyear.com and via the iPhone application which is available from the iTunes store (keyword is: Rietveld). The weekend will close with a cocktail party at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam.

What many people may not know is that, as an architect, Gerrit Rietveld realised more than 100 projects in The Netherlands. These have all been recorded in the Rietveld Architectuur iPhone application, developed in col-laboration wtih Makayama. By using this application, you’ll be able to see – wherever you are in the Netherlands – if there’s a building desiged by Rietveld in the neighbourhood. And, with the help of an built-in navigation system, you’ll easily be able to find your way to it. The application can be downloaded for free via the App Store.

Windows of various (design) stores, galleries and other unique locations in the centre of Utrecht showcase the final examination works of this year’s graduates in Industrial Design and 3D Design from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU, Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht). Industrial Designers create innovative functional and user-friendly products. In terms of form and style, the products distinguish themselves from run-of-the-mill utensils. 3D-Designers occupy a creative space somewhere between the visual artist and the industrial designer. This year there is a remarkable amount of large objects. Many products are in correlation with the trends awareness and transformation. All the products on display along the HKU Design Route are guaranteed to be innovative, multifaceted and of a high quality.

what would you say is typically Rietveld? can you describe this in 5 words? The keywords for me are: Humane in intent, spacious in form and experimental in the way of thinking.

what is your favourite Rietveld design?I don’t have one. When, for whatever reason, I’m busy with one of his designs, I am always struck by different things. Today, I showed photos of the Mgr. Verriet Institute for physically and mentally-challenged children on Curaçao, to the American chief editor of the magazine Condé Nast Traveler. She thought it was fantastic that the building hardly has any walls, but partitions with shutters. It’s always windy there and this is much more pleasant than air-conditioning. It’s a very spacious building: a roof on poles, as Rietveld called it, with two holes to let the light fall in on the courtyard. And a reversed point shape to collect rain water. The plan is arranged in such a way a way that the children who are too disabled to get out of their bed can see the other children and share a little in their activities. And so forth. It’s a very humane architecture.

Do you own anything by or about Rietveld? No, Rietveld thought that the interior is a background for life. His chairs have become too famous to still be able to take that neutral stance.

who would you say is the contemporary Dutch, or netherlands-based, Rietveld? Many Dutch designers can claim that title because ‘renewed thinking’ is an intrinsic hallmark of contemporary Dutch design.

Do you think that Rietveld is still relevant in the contemporary design context? why?I find the experimental nature of Rietveld’s work relevant: the premise that something should be possible if you find it important.

Do you know anything special about Rietveld that you would like to share? If you read his letters, you will notice that he can get wound up about people and things. He didn’t really show that in public. I think that’s rather beautiful.

what programme do you have at the Dutch Design Double? The exhibition, Rietveld’s Universe, in which Rietveld’s work is compared to that of his contemporaries, such as Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer. They were preocuppied by the same subjects – public housing, mass production etc – and everyone had their own solution. Rietveld’s enormous quality and creativity shines through.

Utrecht-based band C-mon & Kypski made a new video clip especially for the Rietveld Year, in collaboration with Maurice Trouwborst. This video is partly filmed in the Rietveld-designed factory De Ploeg in Bergeijk and will play an integral role in three shows by the group during Dutch Design Double. On Wednesday 20 October, C-mon & Kypski are playing at the Tivoli in Utrecht. This performance is also the after-party following the opening of the Rietveld’s Universe exhibition (see opposite) in the Centraal Museum. Because of this, only a limited number of tickets will be on sale. On Friday 22 October, C-mon & Kypski are playing at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, as part of the Amsterdam Dance Event. Finally, they’re playing at the Effenaar in Eindhoven on Saturday 23 October, on the first day of the Dutch Design Week.

The exhibition Rietveld’s Universe demonstrates that Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) designed much more than just the classic Red and Blue Chair and famous Rietveld Schröder House. In fact, Rietveld realised more than 100 buildings and many pieces of furniture. For this show, the Centraal Museum is placing Rietveld’s work in a broad context. By focusing attention on Rietveld the person and his working methods, as well as comparing him and his work with famous contemporaries such as Wright, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe, it puts Rietveld’s creative genius – and his contribution to 20th-century architecture – in a new light. The exhibition has been realised in collaboration with the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi).

All over the world there’s a great interest in sustainability, healthy eating habits and the quality and safety of food. Designer Katja Gruijters has made the topic of waste her main theme, and developed a concept in which depreciation and wastage of food is preventable – and the consciousness of consumers and companies is raised. Nature herself is an example; nothing is lost, after all, in the cycle of nature. Katja Gruijters’ alternative kitchen is therefore called ‘Naturally Beautiful’.The development of this concept has been taken onboard by a constantly changing group of specialists from various disciplines. For example, the Food & Biobased Research organization at the Wageningen University has looked into the consequences of waste. A confrontation with thoughtless consumers and the urgency to develop another kind of behavior. What role can designers play in this process? is the topic of this evening activity. With, among others, Katja Gruijters. Moderators are Marjan Boot and Ingeborg de Roode.

Part of the programme, Do It, which being organised as part of The Temporary Stedelijk at the Stedelijk Museum, held every third Thursday of the month.

what would you say is typically Rietveld. can you describe this in 5 words?Idiosyncratic, experimental, modernist, functional and beautiful.

what is your favourite Rietveld design? Our latest acquisition, a purchase we made in 2008 with the Centraal Museum and the support of different funding bodies: the Witteveen kinderstoel (Witteveen High Chair). The design from 1918 (just before the famous Red and Blue Chair) was a missing link in the Rietveld collection. Previously, we only knew about it from a black-and-white photo because the only existing example had been lost. It had crossed my mind: ‘If we could only find a second example of it…’ It is very clear in this design how Rietveld was, at that time, on some sort of quest. As well as that, I like the small models that Rietveld made of chairs and buildings: all slotting together very simply.

Do you own anything by or about Rietveld?Books, of course, and a replica of a divan end table that can be found in the Rietveld Schröder House, which was once made for me by a friend. That is also a favourite design of mine, of course.

would you say that Rietveld was still relevant in the current design context?Yes, because of his experimental attitude and the continuous quest to improve on his designs.

who would you say is the con-temporary Dutch, or netherlands-based, Rietveld?Someone like the designer Joris Laarman, who experiments a lot.

Does Rietveld play a role in the stedelijk Museum?Rietveld‘s work forms one of the key elements of our collection. We have many highlights, such as the aforementioned Witteveen High Chair; an early Red and Blue Chair; the prototype of the Zig-Zag Chair; the Birza Chair, which is made from one sheet of fibreboard; the Harrenstein Bedroom; the Aluminium Chair; and the Steltman Chair.

what programme do you have at Dutch Design Double? On 22 October, the results of a research into the four known Aluminium chairs by Rietveld will be presented in the Stedelijk Museum. Three chairs belong to public collections, of which one is in the Stedelijk. And the fourth is from a private collection. With the aluminum armchair, Rietveld experimented with material in combination with form (for instance: holes that were meant to provide more sturdi-ness) and possible methods of production (industrial with the help of fibre board). As it seems that there‘s a similar experimental mentality hidden in the work of designer Joris Laarman, we have invited him to give his vision on this aspect of Rietveld‘s work. I am very curious to know exactly how Joris will go about this and put it into words.

The exhibition Rietveld’s Universe demonstrates that Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld (1888-1964) designed much more than just the classic Red Blue Chair and famous Rietveld Schröder House.
