In using the power of communications to make a better world, BT chooses suppliers with similar aspirations. The Huawei relationship is a great example. Starting simply with the provision of products for the BT core and broadband access networks, it’s since proven transformational.

Based at the BT Adastral Park research labs, BT and Huawei teams are engaged in a joint innovation and collaboration programme. That ensures the partners’ combined know-how will help BT customers communicate more effectively, both locally and globally, for years to come.

Dynamic duo drive world-scale innovation in communication.

Case study - Huawei.

The Huawei vision is to build a better connected UK. Our partnership with BT truly makes a difference. Together we work on everything from next-generation virtualised network solutions to new technology to better connect UK homes.

Partnering in innovation, from mobile to next-generation broadband and beyond, BT and Huawei look toward a bright future.

Case Study - Huawei.

Creating possibilities. How do you ensure millions of people can take advantage of next-generation superfast broadband? What can you do to apply virtualisation techniques to make networks smarter and easier to manage? Where can you find suppliers with the engineering know-how and vision to help make such things happen?

BT works tirelessly to create possibilities for its customers, for which it needs technology partnerships. Global technology giant Huawei is just such a partner. It’s helping BT move from strength to strength.

From humble origins...The Huawei story started, as most partnerships do, from small beginnings. First chosen by BT as a supplier of switching and routing gear for its broadband network in 2005, over the years Huawei technology has been used to upgrade that network as new innovations come along.

BT engineers found that faster Huawei devices came at a lower whole-life cost with more ports and additional features. In turn, they discovered they required fewer of them to serve ever-growing needs for speed and capacity.

“Huawei produces equipment that’s very reliable and comparatively cost effective,” says Geoff Pearson, Huawei Platform Manager at BT. “Our core network has to have always-on availability. Outages are not tolerated. So we choose technology partners wisely. Today, that network uses over five-thousand Huawei WDM network elements. They’re that reliable.”

To massive outcomes...Trust formed between the two companies and BT began to use other Huawei products and services. Today, Huawei routing and switching systems are used in major exchanges to bring next-generation superfast broadband and mobile telephony to people around the UK.

These systems include a carrier-class Huawei top-end device, described as “a serious piece of kit” by Clive Salmon, BT Manager for Infrastructure Access. “These Huawei systems are higher-scale units with more features and greater reliability,” he says. “They’re so good that we’re able to consolidate four to five legacy boxes into one Huawei device to help ensure reliability and speed of voice and data traffic used by major mobile operators.”

Huawei products now feature in a mix of BT services. Huawei solutions help deliver voice, video and a wide range of apps across BT networks and into the homes of millions of users.

What else does Huawei bring to BT? There are many answers. Martin Fowler, BT TSO General Manager for the NGA development platform, says: “The service Huawei gives to BT is very good. They’re always coming up with new ideas and innovative solutions helping BT bring its customers even better services.”

Cultivating and nurturing new ideas.Like BT, Huawei promotes a culture of innovation. It knows innovation doesn’t just happen. Rather, it has to be incubated and nurtured like a fragile seedling. That starts with a very simple proposition: innovation should always serve customers’ needs.

“Huawei has always been customer-facing,” says Paul Salusbury, Account Director at Huawei. “When BT faces an end customer challenge and engages us, we’re able to customise our products to exactly meet the specification or deliver a solution. As an engineering company, we pride ourselves in our responsiveness. That philosophy is at the heart of our relationship with BT.”

That’s resulted in a mutual search for new ideas. At Adastral Park in Ipswich, the two companies have established a joint innovation and collaboration programme. Huawei occupies two entire floors, with 40 engineering staff working alongside BT people. They aim to bring ever-better communication solutions to the whole world.

Our core network has to have always-on availability. Outages are not tolerated. So we choose technology partners wisely. Today, that network uses over five-thousand Huawei WDM network elements. They’re that reliable.

Our commitment to BT is total, which is why we have our engineers permanently based at Adastral Park. Together, we work from the inception of an idea, through development and test, to market rollout.

“Our commitment to BT is total, which is why we have our engineers permanently based in Adastral Park,” explains Nigel Abraham, Solutions Director at Huawei. “Together, we work from the inception of an idea, through development and test, to market rollout.”

BT and Huawei engineering teams have developed innovations like network function virtualisation (NFV). “For example, with NFV, businesses will no longer have to call in an engineer to set up or modify their networks,” says Nigel. “Instead, such tasks can all be done remotely.”

Another example is G.fast. This enables BT to extend its use of copper by making this older technology reach headline-grabbing rates of up to 1,000Mbps in controlled conditions. Joint innovations will also help further enhance fibre optic technologies, getting even more out of current network investments.

Branching out into the enterprise environment. With the relationship firmly rooted in BT core and access networks, it was only natural Huawei equipment should also be used in the enterprise space. Examples abound of Huawei contributing to the success of BT solutions for its business customers.

For instance, one customer selected a Huawei-powered solution when replacing its point-to-point WAN with a more flexible and cost effective BT IP Connect network. Superfast broadband connects 100 sites to the BT cloud with Huawei routers at 80Mbps and 20Mbps upload and download speeds respectively. Meanwhile, dual 1Gbps links to the customer’s data centre use large Huawei switches.

Similarly, a major retailer with 400 branches in the UK completed a rollout in November 2014 using Huawei routers from BT to provide its branches with high-speed broadband. One reason for the choice was to allow migration from ADSL to superfast broadband when it became enabled at a site, without the cost and risk of swapping devices. This was only achievable at a challenging price point by using Huawei. Another reason was excellent support.

Those are just two examples of how the BT Huawei relationship is strong and growing. “We’re proud of our allocation of resources for joint innovation. And we continually immerse ourselves in fostering an even better partnership,” concludes Nigel Abraham.
