The Jewish Value of Mutual Responsibility
Dear Friends, How do we teach children to think of themselves not only as individuals but as members of a collective—such as a family, a community, the Jewish people, or the entire world? One way—our way—is to teach them the Jewish value of mutual responsibility. This year, Alisa Levine, our Director of Education, and our Mercaz Aliyah teachers are doing just that. They are focusing their attention on the famous Jewish slogan, “Kol Yisrael Areivim zeh la-zeh”—“All Jews are responsible for one another” (found in the Babylonian Talmud, in Shevuot 39a). What does this slogan mean? We may assume that it means that we need to look out for one another. In other words, if we see our fellow Jews in distress, we need to act. We owe it to them, just as we would hope that they would stick up for us if we were in need. Indeed, this is one way that we can and do interpret this passage. And it provides a great lesson to teach our children.
3
But in the original Talmudic context, the passage means something startlingly different. It means that in the event that any fellow Jew behaves badly—that is, contrary to the letter or the spirit of the mitzvot (our religious obligations)—it is up to us to challenge that behavior and to seek to correct it. Otherwise we are held to account for it. This extraordinary understanding is concretized in an amazing passage in the Talmud (which I quoted in my First Day Rosh Hashanah sermon, accessible here). “Whoever can protest the behavior of the members of their household and does not, is held responsible for the behavior of their household. Whoever can protest the behavior of the people of their town, and does not, is held responsible for the behavior of the people of their town. Whoever can protest the behavior of the entire world, and does not, is held responsible for the behavior of the entire world.”
(Shabbat 54b) So “Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh La-Zeh” also means that we have a serious stake in how other Jews behave. For the sins that other Jews commit have an impact on, and reflect badly on all of us. That’s a much more challenging way to understand the slogan, for it requires us sometimes to “stick our necks out” and to challenge the way someone else is behaving. That seems contrary to what we might call the “American Way.” In this land of “rugged individualism,” in this land in which “Live and Let Live” seems to be a far more prevalent ethical norm, it’s tough to be a Jew, for our tradition implores us to care about how others are behaving and, if necessary, to speak up. Protesting, in other words, is for us, a religious obligation. By the way, the concluding statement in that passage from Shabbat 54b makes it clear that the phrase “All Jews are responsible for one another” should not be interpreted to mean that we are only responsible for fellow Jews. Indeed, that statement makes clear that our responsibility extends far beyond that, to all of humanity.
4
But we nonetheless impart an important lesson to our children by teaching them that “All Jews are responsible for one another.” For, as the saying goes, “charity begins at home,” and so too does interpersonal responsibility. To paraphrase Rabbi Mark Greenspan, a colleague of mine: “One might think of our social responsibilities as a series of concentric circles, beginning with oneself (recall that it was Hillel who asked, “If I am not for myself, who will be for me?”), continuing with one’s family, one’s community, the Jewish people and, then, the larger world. We are taught in the Shulchan Aruch, the authoritative code of Jewish law from the sixteenth century: ‘Members of one’s family who are in need take precedence over strangers who are in need; residents of one’s city who are in need take precedence over residents of other cities who are in need; and one’s self comes before anyone else.’ (Yoreh Deah 251:3)” Jewish tradition, in other words, recognizes that though we are ultimately responsible for everyone on the planet, prioritization is appropriate. Rabbi Greenspan continues, “For example, helping our fellow Jews is extremely important because we are part of an extended family. … If Jews do not support one another, who will?” “But at the same time, we should not forget that we are part of a much larger community, i.e., ‘the family of humankind.’ We live in a global village and cannot ignore the suffering of others and the needs of the world. In ways that were inconceivable for our ancestors, we are aware of what is happening in the far reaches of our planet, and our sages understood that knowledge implies responsibility: when we see someone in need, no matter who it is, we cannot remain indifferent. ‘Don’t stand idly by the blood of your fellow man,’ applies equally to Jews and non-Jews.” I am hopeful that by studying this notion of “Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh La-Zeh,” our children will recognize the importance of carrying with them throughout their lives two twin responsibilities: to their fellow Jews; and to their fellow human beings—wherever they may reside, and whatever may be their language, culture, religion or national origin. Kein Yehi Ratzon!—So may it be God’s will!

Being Part of a Responsible Community
I have only been in Needham since the summer, and already I am so proud to be a part of the Temple Aliyah family. The warmth and care within this family is apparent to everyone immediately. One of the first things one sees when entering the building near the office is a shelf with a box reading “JF&CS” next to a sign reading “Social Action @Aliyah.” This box is almost always filled with food donations for Family Table. Several months ago, there was also a barrel full of coats for our Sukkot Coat Drive. What drives us to do this? Why do we care so much about others? This is an important concept in our tradition—that we all have a responsibility for one another. We read about this at the beginning of the Torah. In the very first Torah portion, Bereshit, we read of the murder of Abel by his brother Cain. Immediately after this horrible incident, God asks Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know,” Cain replies. “Am I my brother’s keeper?” What is interesting about this response is that Cain does not deny personal responsibility. He does not say, “It was not me,” or “It was not my fault.” He denies moral responsibility. In effect he asks why he should be concerned with the welfare of anyone but himself. This contrasts interestingly with another story we read a little later in the next book of the Torah. In the beginning of Exodus, we read of Moses’ early
6
years. He grows up, goes out to his people, the Israelites, and sees them laboring as slaves. He witnesses an Egyptian officer beating one of them. The text then says, “He turned this way and that and saw no one.” It is hard to read this literally. A building site is not a closed location. There must have been other people present. And in fact, a mere two verses later we discover that there were Israelites who knew exactly what Moses had done. The text almost certainly means, “He looked this way and that and saw that there was no one else willing to intervene.” This is what we do. We do not remain passive; we do not wait for someone else to act. Unlike Cain, we take moral responsibility for each other like Moses and try to make a difference in the world. The Hebrew word for responsibility, acharayut, comes from the word acher, which means “other.” We all have a responsibility for one another. May we at Temple Aliyah continue to rise up to this task.

This year, Mercaz Aliyah, our innovative afternoon Hebrew school, has chosen as its theme the concept known as Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh La’Zeh, which translates to “All Jews are responsible for one another.” At Temple Aliyah, this is not just an empty slogan, but a way that we live our lives. This publication that honors all of the contributions our synagogue has received over the last several months is surely testament to what we do for one another. And there’s so much more. Through our new Aliyah Assist program, we have a formal structure to channel the desire so many of us have to help others in our community. All you have to do is access the volunteer jobs board through the synagogue website and you can quickly connect to committees or projects that are looking for an extra pair of hands. Meanwhile, our Mental Health Initiative has launched a number of programs, including a regular healing service, in an effort to make Temple Aliyah a place where those who may be feeling isolated come together and draw strength from others. Above all that (literally!), our new solar array is reducing our carbon footprint to the tune of 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year. We are contributing to our broader world, as well. We have so much to be proud of at Temple Aliyah: the youth programs from tots to teens, the wide array of adult education opportunities, the fun and dynamic community events, and on and on. We hope that you can sense that pride in just a small way by looking at all the donations acknowledged in this booklet. As we say often in Jewish life, “May we go from strength to strength!”

Shining Moments
It has always been important for me to set a “guiding theme” for each new year. I credit this practice to my mentor, Serene Victor, who worked for the department of education at USCJ. At a summer workshop which I once attended, she and her colleague Wendy Light, gave this advice to all educators in attendance. Last Spring, I thought a lot about what might be an appropriate theme for this year. The one that kept ringing in my head was this, “Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh La Zeh”. What an honor to have Rabbi Perkins choose this very theme as the focus for this community wide e-Shofar! As I began to prepare for our opening faculty meeting, I found some very helpful information on the internet about this theme. The source of what follows is from the UJA Federation of New York’s center for Jewish Peoplehood on a site they call Building Collective Jewish Life through Education. Here’s what they had to say about this: “No other line in Jewish texts captures the spirit of Jewish Peoplehood than this ancient quote from the Babylonian Talmud: Kol Yisrael Areivim Zeh La’zeh, All Israel (Jews) are Responsible for Each Other. In many respects this core Jewish imperative manifests in the reality that Jews see themselves as a group linked by a deep sense of mutual responsibility and solidarity. Jews have interpreted this core value throughout history both internally, in terms of the social norms that typified local Jewish communities, and also in support of Jews from other communities.” It became clear to me that this theme could embody everything that we strive to teach our children at Mercaz Aliyah from modern Hebrew
9
language to sacred texts and from ancient history to modern day life and customs. It didn’t take much to convince Rabbi Perkins, Cantor Gloth, the school committee chairs, and the rest of the faculty that this theme could serve as a solid guiding theme for all of our work this year. Soon after, I was asked by the adult education chairs to clarify just how to spell this theme – both in Hebrew and in the English transliteration—no joke. Quickly I learned that this line appears two ways in the Talmud with one minor variation. So whether you say it or spell it one way or the other—according to the sources - both are correct!
1. In Shevuot 39a it is written: Kol Yisrael Areivim Leh Ba Zeh and then 2. In Ritva’s commentary on Rosh Hashana 29a it is written: Kol Yisrael
Areivim Zeh La Zeh This very slight difference both in the Hebrew and in the English transliteration point to two distinct proof texts in the Torah. The first refers back to Leviticus 26:37 where we are warned that “if one of us should stumble, we all stumble” and the second refers back to Leviticus 19:18 when we are taught to “love your neighbor as yourself.” Both ways of looking at it are beautiful and rich in making educational connections*. In both references, the verse instructs us on how important it is to care for one another and how very much our individual actions can have an impact on those around us. Since opening day there have been countless ways that teachers and I have connected our school theme with Jewish learning. One of my favorite examples took place just recently at the solar panel
ribbon cutting ceremony. When our students were asked to give a short
presentation as part of the morning program, teachers were tasked with
making this a “teachable moment.” Everyone embraced this opportunity
and began working in class on short presentations relating to the sun.
Grade K/1 students focused on seven ways that the sun helps us; Grade 2
students focused on where the sun appears in the creation story; Grade 3, 4
& 5 students focused on how we can give thanks for our shemesh – the sun;
grade 6 students focused on the reason that this was a “threshold moment”
for our community to celebrate; and grade 7 focused on liturgical references
to light and how this “one small step for Temple Aliyah” represents “one
giant leap for the Jewish community.”
10
The students concluded by singing the following short adapted song
together,
“Here comes the sun, and we say, ‘Mazal tov’ yoter tov (it’s better)
Mazal Tov’”
It was clear to me that morning that our Mercaz Aliyah students were very
proud of their shul—AND that our Temple Aliyah community was proud of
their Mercaz Aliyah students! What a better way to live out our theme—Kol
Yisrael Areivim Zeh La Zeh.
Looking forward to sharing many more “shining moments,”
Alisa
*Just for clarification: We teach the meaning of both verses but we went with Zeh La Zeh because it is more common (and is gentler on the ear).

Gan Aliyah Preschool- Fostering Mensches!
We are all responsible for taking care of one another… and there is no better place to model this behavior than in a Jewish preschool classroom. As our mission statement so eloquently states: Gan Aliyah is rooted in the Jewish values of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World), Derech Eretz (Treating Others Respectfully) and Hachnasat Orchim (Creating Warm and Welcoming Community). At Gan Aliyah Preschool we spend each and every day practicing caring for one another in our classrooms, and we are reasonably confident that this caring behavior spills over to the home of every one of our Preschool Families. We work hard to teach the children to say “todah” (thank you), and “b’vaskashah” (you’re welcome and please). There are so many opportunities in a preschool classroom to practice doing “Mitzvot” and to practice kindness, for instance learning how to communicate and act appropriately when they have hurt another child by their words or actions. During the month of November, our focus was on families and how we care for and take care of each other. On November 21st, we had a Harvest Feast, to which we invited all of our Temple Aliyah friends. The children in both classrooms cooked up a storm: corn muffins, homemade butter, cranberry sauce, and apple cranberry crumble. Then we all sat down to share in the bounty together. Moments like these help to cement the children’s understanding of the practice of lovingkindness to each other. The beauty of Preschool, in an intimate setting like ours, is that we get to know our Preschool Families quite well. There is a partnership built between the Director, the teachers, the parents, and even the grandparents
12
and nannies as we strive to develop strong relationships. Unlike in other settings, in these early years of our children’s lives, we have the opportunity to reach out to our parents and families daily and weekly. We have the honor and pleasure of being with these young children as they are evolving into who they are. At Gan Aliyah Preschool, we believe it is the partnerships that create the atmosphere where families and children can grow and learn together in a supportive Jewish community. At Gan Aliyah we are focused on the social/emotional growth and well-being of every child. We see and get to know the “I” in each child. Our intimate size ensures that all children are given caring attention with ratios as low as 4:1 in our toddler class and 5:1 in our preschool class. We offer a curriculum that is rich in experiential learning and play. We learn to cooperate, to share, to take turns, and to HELP one another. Each of our children know they will be assigned a classroom job on a rotating basis. These jobs include attendance taker, snack helper, weather person, chime ringer, etc. By taking on these responsibilities at an early age, the children realize they are part of a community. Children are guided by our articulate teachers who constantly model kind, appropriate and understanding ways of speaking and acting. We firmly believe we are helping to foster the “mensch” in each of our students. And we believe menschs care about others and feel a responsibility to be helpers and to be kind. We are so lucky to be part of a Jewish community that values mitzvot, caring, and kindness. Of course our daily curriculum is also filled with lots of science, math and literacy. Our preschoolers are cognitively, emotionally and socially well prepared for kindergarten and the world beyond preschool. Gan Aliyah is enrolling Toddlers 2’s and almost 2’s, 3, 4 and 5-year old’s for next year. Please spread the word and help us GROW. A Jewish Preschool education is a gift that each Jewish child deserves.

Y@TA- Each of Us is Responsible
Within the Youth @ Temple Aliyah (Y@TA) programs, we interpret “All Israel are responsible for each other” in different ways.
For the Teen Engagement Fellows, this might mean reaching out to their peers at Needham High and Gann Academy to make sure that they feel included in our social programming.
For our Temple Aliyah Community Opportunities and Service (TACOS) participants, this might mean taking responsibilities for planning a program for our retired older adult friends at Coleman House or Avery Manor.
For our USY and Y@TA members in grades 2-12, this might mean participating in Social Action/Tikkun Olam (SATO) fundraisers (or the Tikkun Olam Semi-Formal Dance that Temple Aliyah has hosted for the past two years)
Through every program, whether it’s fun and social, or meaningful and educational, we connect the themes back to our Jewish roots to see how what are doing at our synagogue in Needham is connected to the larger Jewish community. We would love to connect with you to hear how you would like to give back and be responsible for others. To learn more about Y@TA see our promotional brochure or email Kayla at [email protected].

Teaching Our Children Through Community with
Temple Tots
When we pray to God at a Temple Tots service, we say a lot of “Thank Yous,” “Wows!” and my favorite, “Helps.” Helps are the things we know we need to do better, but could use a bit of extra help to get it right, from God and from each other. Every service, I hear from kids and parents helps such as, “riding my bike,” “listening to my parents,” “being nice to my sibling,” “sharing with my friends,” and “having more patience.” Sharing our helps with each other, as well as God, is one way that we can support each other. Caring for each other isn’t just for Shabbat mornings. Recent Temple Tots Committee meetings have included plans to formally partner with the Hesed committee to offer support to new parents (and new again parents). When we teach our children that “each of us is responsible for one another,” we teach them that it extends beyond our friends. In April, Temple Tots will be holding their own “mini” Mitzvah Morning. The hands may be small, but the mitzvot they perform will be large, benefiting our own community and beyond. On a recent Saturday evening, Temple Tots and Gan Aliyah Preschool celebrated Havdalah together. Families came together for this amazing and very sweet ritual that marks the shift between the sacred (Shabbat) and the mundane (the rest of the week). We are sacred community when even the mundane activities we participate in—playing with Legos during Kiddush, taking turns leading the Torah parade, sharing paint during a Sunday brunch activity—teach us that we all need “help” sometimes and we can each do something to ease the “help” of another.
