The Trinidad and Tobago Carnival is an annual event held on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, and is well known for participant's colorful costumes and exuberant celebrations.

Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago is the most signi�cant event on the islands' cultural and tourism calendar, with numerous cultural events running in the lead up to the street parade on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. It is said that if the islanders are not celebrating it, then they are preparing for it, while reminiscing about the past year's festival. The heart of the musical celebration has been calypso; recently soca has replaced calypso as the most celebrated type of music. Costumes, stick�ghting and limbo competitions are also important components of the festival. (Wikipedia, encyclopedia)

This edition would see us focusing on some of the site, scenes and experiences for this years Carnival. We also seek to also share a bit of Trinidad’s history as it pertaines to Carnival.

Trinidad's carnival is a beautiful example of how carnival can unite the world. For in this small nation, the beliefs and traditions of many cultures have come together; and for a brief �ve days each year, the whole country forgets their di�erences to celebrate life!

Like many other nations under colonial rule, the history of Native Americans and African people in Trinidad is a brutal, sad story. Spain and England at di�erent times both claimed Trinidad as their colonies. Under British rule, the French settled in Trinidad, bringing with them their slaves, customs, and culture. By 1797, 14,000 French settlers came to live in Trinidad, consisting of about 2,000 whites and 12,000 slaves. Most of the native peoples (often called the Amerindians) who were the �rst people to live in Trinidad, died from forced labor and illness.

Carnival was introduced to Trinidad around 1785, as the French settlers began to arrive. The tradition caught on quickly, and fancy balls were held where the wealthy planters put on masks, wigs, and beautiful dresses and danced long into the night. The use of masks had special meaning for the slaves, because for many African peoples, masking is widely used in their rituals for the dead. Obviously banned from the masked balls of the French, the slaves would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards — using their own rituals and folklore, but also imitating their masters’ behavior at the masked balls. to be continued pg 6

The Eye on Embacadere saw its residents looking to spending the Carnival Celebrations in di�erent ways, from spending Carnival at the beach on camp, home with their families and in the festive celebration.

This Carnival Issue would feature lots of images from the season. It is the hope that Embacadere would be able to host its on talent and showcase production. One that would highlight the skills and talent of the residents. Looking forward to this in the near future.

KURT SHELDON VALENTINE holds many titles to his name from father, entrepreneur, friend, graphic designer and innovator but the one thing he loves being known for is his unquenchable desire for being an agent of change, for community enrichment – social leader. As a long standing resident of the community of Embacadere he purposes in his heart to see the community be a better one hence the birth of this magazine.

Embacadere, which happens to be the same community he vows to devote his time, energy and efforts to developing and making a better place for all members of the community is his heaven and have been for a long time.

What better way to drive home the point for the purpose of the magazine then to have the man himself talk to us. Hence, for the first time since its existence, Mr. Valentine will be featured in this section (The Interview- True Life Changing Stories) of the magazine. So, kick back and relax as we’re about to take a trip into the mind of the innovator, designer and conceptualiser aka master mind behind this amazing community magazine – The Embacadere Source Magazine.

Reporter: What words best describe you as an individual?K-Valentine: Persistant, Strong, Resourceful, Caring, and innovative. Reporter: I understand you have a really passion for art, why do you love designing. Really what is your goal.K- Valentine: Well I believe that we were all designed for a particular purpose, and we are equipped to accomplish that purpose that goal. It is with this gift skill and or talent I accomplish my goal of sharing hope. Art is just one of my love, I love art /designing because I get to express ‘me’ . I get to leave an impression that would live on.Reporter: How long have you been living in Embacadere, and a memorable experience?

K Valentine : Living in Embacadere for almost fifteen years, and counting. Living in this commu-nity comes with many memorable expeiences. I remember finding one of goals here, my passion for community development. I believe when you are in an area you should be interested in the advancement of that community.

One memorable experience was hosting my first project entitled ‘Restoration’ in the community centre many moons ago. The response was great I remember that feeling today as thou it were yesterday.

Reporter: What was the most valuable lesson that you learned from your mom or dad grow-ing up that you still apply today?K Valentine: My mom I guess had many lessons to teach the one that stood out was, don’t quite’ do not give up was basically her matra. I saw that message in her all the time.Reporter: What would you say is one of your greatest accomplishments in your life. K Valentine: “My word” nice, I believe I had some really nice accomplishments over the years. I would say, creating a loving, safe and secure home for my family. One that encour-ages them to be the best and all that God has called them to be.

Other signi�cant Information:Promoted as the Blocko & Pan Market on the Brian Lara Promenade, October 2000 in Port of Spain; Trinmar Hatters were invited to repre-sent Trinidad and Tobago in a manner of welcome to the foreign participants of the World Steelband Music Festival 2000; only two Steelbands appeared for this event. The foreign bands representative at the evening’s event was BWIA Ebony from London, the UK.With Lennox ‘Boogsie’ Sharpe as arranger; in October 2003, members of the Steelbands Hatters, Deltones and Phase II, joined together under the Petrotrin banner as Petro Stars to perform in the company’s 10th Anniversary Republic Day “Rainbows” - A Tribute To Excel-lence concerts; staged at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella and later at the Sports Complex, U.W.I., St Augustine. A CD Rainbows was produced to mark the event.Hatters have helped school bands such as Golden Hands and Gabrielites. Hatters also run a six week Steel Pan and Music Workshop during the August holidays for youths in the community. Hatters also had a few concerts, such as a collaboration with Joey Lewis band and ‘Concert Of Hope’ that was held at the Panyard. Hatters being the home band to many talented experienced players and also arrang-ers in San Fernando. Some of the talented youths of Hatters today initiate a junior band to Hatters called the Cappers Steel Orchestra. Hatters also had members attended University to enhance their skills music theory and prac-tical.Hatters are a cultural institution of the com-munities of Embacadere and Broadway and proudly represent the people of San Fernando, the South & Central region and Trinidad & Tobago, whenever the band performs.

As Maritime Life Hatters, the bands �rst tour was to the Aquatennial Festival in Minneapo-lis, Minnesota, U.S.A. in 1974 and was part of the 2nd prize for the Panorama of that year. The second tour was to the Dallas State Fair in Texas, U.S.A. in 1975; this also was a prize; given for their 1st place in the Panorama of that year. All members are reputed to have returned with the band on both occasions - an unusual feat for a Steelband in those days.

In summary; Hatters have won the South Zone Panorama six times; 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1975 and were joint winner with Tornadoes in the year 2000. They have made two 1st’s in the TT National Preliminaries in 1968 and 1975; a 2nd in the TT National Semi-Finals of 1969, also two 3rds in the Semis of 1973 and 1975, two 2nd’s in the TT National Finals of 1974 and 1976 and a TT National Panorama win of 1975.Participation in other competitions.

At World Steelband Music Festival 2002, a 26 member Petrotrin Trinmar SUB Hatters placed 7th in the World �nals, with Dr Jeannine Remy’s moving composition The Attacks and Aftermath of September 11th 2001. 911 as the tune is locally called, is earmarked for play by the TT National Steel Orchestra.

Hatters have appeared at most of the public Pan arenas in Trinidad; which have included; the �nals of the Republic Pan Fiesta, TIDCo's Panyard Sensations; the Carnival Bomb com-petitions, accompanying Mas' bands, San Fernando City and Independence Day events; Borough Day Point Fortin, the Laventille Emancipation Festival, the Couva Sugar and Energy Festival; Rio Claro Festival, Fyzabad Labour Day, local panyard Blocko's and events at Skinner Park; at the hospice for the elderly in San Fernando; the cruise ship complex Port of Spain and for its sponsors corporate events in Point Fortin, Palo Seco and Pointe a Pierre.

Carnival is such an important aspect of life in Trini-dad that many schools believe that sponsoring a carnival band is a way to teach young people about their roots and culture. In Trinidad’s Kiddies Carnival, hundreds of schools and community organizations participate! In this way, communities work together to develop stronger friendships and greater respect for the many cultures that make up Trinidad.

The Birth of the SteelbandOne of the exciting aspects of Caribbean carnival is the appearance in the early 20th century of the steel pan, which are instruments made from used oil drums that have been cut o� on one end and then shaped, pounded, and tuned. Every carnival season, steelbands, composed of one to two hun-dred pan players, practice for months on end. Ready with their tunes, these steelbands take to the stadiums and the streets, to create some of the most beautiful music in the world.

The history of the steelband in Trinidad and Tobago is directly tied to the banning of all types of drumming in Trinidad in the 1880’s. Though this ban was not readily accepted and rioting resulted, ultimately Africans applied and readapted their tradition of the drum to create new forms and mediums of music, including the tamboo bamboo, a rhythmic ensemble made up of bamboo joints beaten together and pounded on the ground. Biscuit tins and dustbins were manipulated and crafted into instruments, becoming the �rst “pans.” To explore the roots of pan and understand that this phenomenal music came about through years of struggle and sacri�ce.

For African people, carnival became a way to express their power as indi-viduals, as well as their rich cultural traditions. After 1838 (when slavery was abolished), the freed Africans began to host their own carnival celebrations in the streets that grew more and more elaborate, and soon became more popular than the balls.

Today, carnival in Trinidad is like a mirror that re�ects the faces the many immi-grants who have come to this island nation from Europe, Africa, India, and China. African, Asian, and American Indian in�uences have been particularly strong.

Nobody does it better than The House of Jacqui.You've dreamt about it . . . Now you can do it.

Mrs Jacqui Koon How grew up with her parents Laurence Koon How and Isa Mc Pherson Koon How. Jacqui was born at Point a Pierre Hospital. She has three sisters. She attended St Joseph Convent San Fernando from primary school to 'A' level examinations, after which she attended the Montreal School of Fine Arts.

Mrs Koon How loves designing and was a designer since age seven years old. Mrs. Jacqui Koon How, of the “House of Jacqui” taught English and Art at St. Benedict’s College. Then, she traveled to Canada to further her knowledge of art, but got ill and had to return home. She later obtained a job as a ‘fashion buyer’ and got an opportunity to hold a fashion show. She realized that models were lacking something and said she ‘kind of fell into it’.

She trains young ladies to be models and more than �fty of them have won queen shows. Some have gone on to represent Trinidad and Tobago Internationally. Mrs Koon How began her career through a Best Village presentation and received a National Award (Humming Bird Gold Medal) in 2004.

At 63 years old, Jacqui has her own fashion/designing business and also produce Carnival designs for individual bands. It is called the House of Jacqui. She also has a passion for elephants and has over 600 miniatures. Jacqui modeled in her young days and is indeed an impressive independent woman.

Love relationship help tip 4: Healthy relationships are built on give and take

If you expect to get what you want 100% of a time in a relationship, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. Healthy relationships are built on compromise. However, it takes work on each person’s part to make sure that there is a reasonable exchange.

Recognize what’s important to your partnerKnowing what is truly important to your partner can go a long way towards building goodwill and an atmosphere of compromise. On the �ip side, it’s also important for your partner to recognize your wants and for you to state them clearly. Constantly giving to others at the expense of your own needs builds resentment and anger.

Don’t make “winning” your goal If you approach your partner with the attitude that things have to be your way or else, it will be di�cult to reach a compromise. Sometimes this attitude comes from not having your needs met while younger, or it could be years of accumulated resentment in the relationship reaching a boiling point. It’s alright to have strong convictions about something, but your partner deserves to be heard as well. You are more likely to get your needs met if you respect what your partner needs, and compromise when you can.

• Some problems are bigger than both of you. Trying to force a solution can cause even more problems. Every person works through problems and issues in his or her own way. Remember that you’re a team. Continuing to move forward together can get you through the rough spots.

• Be open to change. Change is inevi-table in life, and it will happen whether you go with it or �ght it. Flexibility is essential to adapt to the change that is always taking place in any relationship, and it allows you to grow together through both the good times and the bad.

Di�erent people cope with stress di�erently, and misunderstanding can rapidly turn to frustration and anger.

Relationship advice for getting through life’s ups and downs• Don’t take out your problems on your partner. Life stresses can make us short tempered. If you are coping with a lot of stress, it might seem easier to vent with your partner, and even feel safer to snap at him or her. Fighting like this might initially feel like a release, but it slowly poisons your relationship. Find other ways to vent your anger and frustration.

We have won the Band of The Year Title Sixteen times (16) in San Fernando, and have represented Trinidad and Tobago several times throughout the world. We have performed for the French and Brazilian Embassies, Carifesta Games, Sport Aid, The President of India, The President of Zambia, Fifth Summit of the Americas, and Common-wealth Heads of Government Meeting. We have out�tted many Miss Trinidad &Tobago Queens with Carnival Costumes for The Miss Universe & Miss World Pageants. For the past ten (10) years we have been involved with the Tourism Drive Thrust at the Cruise Ship Complex.

Our queen Wendy Kalicharan has been consistent in the �rst three placings at the National Level. She won the National Queen of The Bands Title in 1997 with her presentation “Caribbean Blue” which was designed by Gregory Medina & Chris Santos, and she won the San Fernando Queen Title on seven (7) occasions. Aaron Kalicharan won the Carnival King Title in San Fernando in 2000 with his presentation “Triumph & Glory” and in 2009 with his presentation Spirit of The Ocean which were both designed by Follette Eustace. In 2003 both Aaron Kalicharan & Wendy Kalicharan won the King & Queen of the Bands respectively in San Fernando both designed by Follette Eustace. They created history in 2003 by being the �rst mother and son to take the title at the same time.
