Each snowing scene,

Finds me plucking the plum blossom,

Holding flowers and holding pain,

My tears are running all over them!

Now on the strangest sea,

My temples are blown snowy white.

The late wind is heading for me,

Enjoying plum flowers so becomes hard .

Do you know who wrote this poem﹖

清平乐

年年雪里, 常插梅花醉,

挪尽梅花无好意, 赢得满衣清泪! 今年海角天涯, 萧萧两鬓生华。 看取晚来风势, 故应难看梅花。

-------The Marriage Life

• In 1101 she married Zhao Mingcheng, with whom she shared interests in art collection and epigraphy( 题铭研究,金石学 ). After marriage, they loved each other deeply and led a very happy life. They lived in present-day Shandong. But after Zhao started his official career, he was often away from home. This inspired some of the love poems that she wrote.

• Both she and her husband collected many books. Her husband and she shared a love of poetry and often wrote poems for each other. They also wrote about bronze(青铜) artifacts of the Shang and Zhou dynasties.

In the year 1127, the Jin, a minority nationality in the north, vanquished the Northern Song government, which fled south and established the Southern Song regime in Hangzhou. The war broke up Li Qingzhao‘s happy family. Zhao Mingcheng died of illness while a large part of their collection of books, scrolls(卷轴) and curios (珍奇物品) was lost

in the war.

•Alone, Li Qingzhao wandered about until she came to an area between today‘s Hangzhou and Shaoxing, and spent the rest of her days in misery, loneliness and profound melancholy (忧郁) . In many of her poems, she expressed her nostalgia(乡愁) for her native town, her old home and late husband, recalling the peaceful happy life that 'was no more. "All alone, my thoughts keep wandering, groping mournfully in the utter gloom of misery. " These are the beginning lines of the best-known ci poem Shengshengman she wrote in her old age, in which she poured out the boundless pent-up bitterness in her heart.

Writing Style• The style of Li Qingzhao‘s lyrics changed sharply after she fled to th

e south after the invasion of the Jin Kingdom in north China. Before she went south, her lyrics mainly recounted the lives of girls and women in their boudoirs (闺阁) . For example, Like a Dream and Complaint of the Prince (怨王孙) describes the airy life of cheer the poetess enjoyed at home. Tipsy in the Flower’s Shadow (醉花阴) expresses a girl‘s loneliness and longing for love, as also expressed in the Flute on Phoenix Terrace (凤凰台上忆吹箫) , and A Twig of Plum Blossoms (一剪梅) . After fleeing south, she endured great hardships in life and the style of her lyric poetry turned deep and pithy. Buddhist Dancers (菩萨蛮) Charm of a Maiden Singer (念奴娇) and Slow, Slow Song (声声慢) explore the author’s feelings about life in exile. Joy of Eternal Union (长寿乐) is one of the classic Li Qingzhao's lyric poems composed in the south, presenting a scene during the Lantern Festival in which the poet, avoiding the company of friends, meditates on the bitterness consigned her by the war. In this lyric poem, Li Qingzhao rises above self-pity and expresses her fears for the whole nation.
