family in New England, probably came from Andover,England. He sailed

in the JONATHAN of London, to Boston, in 1639, with his wife, children,

mother-in-law and the latter's niece.

His wife,. the children and his wife's mother were ill during

the voyage, and the wife died be~ore they made port. His mother-in-

law died as they came to anchor in Boston Harbor • Some of their fellow

passerigers made a deposition to these deaths several years later :

hereunder written, who about 13 years ago came over here in a ship

called the Jonathan of London, with Thomas Blanchard now of Charlestown,

at what time his wife dyed in the ship hee was conceived to be very

-> poore and in greate necessity by reason of his wives and childrens

sickness, that the passengers made a gathering for him in the shippe

to helpe to put his child to nurse; his wives ~other also being sick

all the while wec were at sea and wee knew no other man that looked

to her but Thomas Blanchard, but there vias a maide which Was her neece

ship came to Anchor in Boston Harbor, the woman, his mother-in-law

died, and ':ehomas Blanchard procured to cary her to shore to be buryed,

He held the Parker Winning farm , held last by the daughter of Edward

Old Sam Blanchard had 200 acres-in a bunch,-for his farm, on a road by the Pond, down to Jacob Osgood's place- that was the late Wadleigh Noyes' estate. The Winning farm is part of the Blanchard hom.estead, and the old house stood back of Upton's-opposite on an old unused road, once a garrison house- and there when Abiel Upton came to Andover. Upton built a new house near the Minning place. Sam Blanchard is said to be the one who lived on the Chase place near the Tewksbury line.

~'arker Winning estates ( see 1872 map) on the road leading out from the

West Parish school-house to the old Osgood place of ~ames Otis fame. Jos

iah's(l) share probably covered both of above estates. JosIah (5) lived

t~ere and Samtl (6), his son, went from there to Salem. The old home stood

back of George Upton's place, and a garrison house once stood back or . on an unused road, on the town line.

the Blanchard homestead,/Ablel Upton, father of George, bought the mIASE

rarm, which was on the site of the acres of the early T~m (3) and Josiah(4).

~art of the old house was later taken to Tewksbury and made over into an

e1 for the house or Aaron Frost. Thomas (6) and Samuel Blanchard, lived

there longest of all the tribe.

This line of CHASE is entirely distinct from that of Seth Chase who

lived on the Jameson place, once the property of Joseph (4) Blanchard. This

land. Sara Bal1~rd to ok over the property from Daniel (5)(8ee 131:74), 1771

She and her nephew planted an elm tree on the day they learned of the sign

ing of the ueclatation of Independance. The tree was still alive in 1911.

It stood in front of Jameson's yellow house which stood endwise to the Boad

and had a porch in front.

From Widow Sara Ballard , the house went to David Towne who sold to

John Chase. He in turn sold it to Joseph Abbott who passed it on to David

Jameson. Jameson tried to fix it up after he bought it but left to take

the Dane place then in the market. The home, built in 1710, was finally sold

to SuLLivan, who moved aCl~OSS the road, and pulled down the old relic, afte:

Soutp. Ghurch Manual,May 25,1729,- ltef'errs to a meeting Oct. 1718, when

/ecause of a difference between the brothers, Samuel and Jonathan Blanchard,

Sam and his wife were not permitted fUll communion;

The parson and the brothers do not agree exactly, and Phillips asks the

Church to overlook the matter, and to signify thedr willingness by raising

their hand~,Only two did so. He then asked if they would accept Sam, if he

Sam- did his utmost to settle the affair in reason, and the majority signif'-

ied ' Aye'.

Jonatqan, as it happens, was left the homestead at his father's death

(Sam) and he was to pay Sam 10 j;,bs., according to his father's will., but he

objected to doing so. Sam went with two witnesses as con~anded by the Church,

and offered to let Konathan off on pa~1ment of 8 ~bs.instead of the 10 ~bs.

due him. He hoped " it would be more :for peace to do so than to bind my

,---.,\ brother to a certain sum. II

The parson thanked Sam for his resolve, also thanked God, and told Sam

that he would be no loser by the act. On May 31, Sam and his wife,~ara,

were admitted to fUll vomnUnion~

Jonathan was evidently a. greedy man, and had a pull with the Church.

The parson evidently sided with Sam and wanted the case settled legally. A

curious picture of' the interference by the Church in business matters~'
