THE EARLY YEARS The original plan for ECU’s current football

facility was announced Oct. 7, 1961, by Dr. LeoJenkins, Chancellor of the College, at a meeting ofthe Society of Buccaneers. Within a year,$283,387 had been raised, although the goal hadbeen only $200,000. With the funds in hand,Ficklen Stadium was built.

The James Skinner Ficklen Memorial Stadiumwas dedicated Sept. 21, 1963, as East Carolinadefeated Wake Forest, 20-10. The original stadi-um consisted of the permanent stands on thesouth side, a small press box, and the old lightingsystem, which was removed after the 1974 season.Total cost was $300,000.

THE NAMESAKES In April 1994, Ron and Mary Ellen Dowdy, of

Orlando, Fla., announced a $1 million gift to the

ECU Educational Foundation. The gift wenttoward the ongoing expansion of ECU’s football sta-dium, which was renamed Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

BAGWELL FIELD Since graduating in the early 1970s, Al and

Debby Bagwell have been gracious friends of theuniversity, with Al serving on the Pirate Club’sExecutive Committee in 1994-95 and beingappointed to the University’s Board of Visitors in1998. The couple from Lake Gaston, Va., washonored in 1997 for their gift to the Pirate Club’sShared Visions Campaign. For their contributionson behalf of the University and to the ECUEducational Foundation, the Bagwell’s namebecame a permanent mark on the ECU landscapeas the field is now recognized as Bagwell Field atDowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

LAST EXPANSION After additions on the north side (upper deck

in 1998 and club-level seating in 1999) increased

the stadium’s capacity to 43,000, East Carolinacompleted a 7,000-seat expansion project in theeast end zone that pushed the seating availabilityto 50,000 in time for Ruffin McNeill’s Pirate headcoaching debut in September 2010. In addition,Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium received an aestheticenhancement the same year when 10,200 purplechairback seats replaced existing bleachers insidethe 35-yard lines on both sides of the facility.

SCOREBOARD A new 84-foot by 28-foot high definition-rated

score/videoboard accompanied the 7,000-seat endzone expansion in the summer of 2010. The newboard, which ranks among the 25 largest in col-lege football, features state-of-the-art video capa-bilities for fan enjoyment. In addition, a new aux-iliary scoreboard was added to the Murphy Centeron the west side to give spectators easy visibilityfrom all locations.

HEAD COACH RUFFIN McNEILL

When former Pirate defensive back andassistant coach Ruffin McNeill camehome last year, the return offered a

promise of renewed Purple and Gold passion —not to mention plenty of points.

McNeill, who starred as a four-year lettermanin the late 1970s and completed a 10-year stay atTexas Tech, was appointed East Carolina’s 20thhead football coach Jan. 21, 2010.

The Lumberton native delivered on thosepledges during his initial campaign, which alsomarked his 25th overall season coaching at thecollegiate level.

Despite inheriting a program that lost 34 let-termen off the previous year’s squad — the mostof any FBS program in America — the self-described football "lifer" guided the 2010 Piratesto six wins and qualification for a fifth-straightbowl game, an accomplishment unprecedented inprogram history.

While playing one of the top 50 most difficultschedules in the country, McNeill’s six victoriesranked seventh nationally among all first-year FBS

coaches. In addition, his five league wins stood sec-ond — trailing only Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher’s six.

Capacity crowds at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadiumalso were treated to an exciting, high-scoring andprolific spread offensive scheme that enjoyed arecord-breaking campaign in 2010 — shatteringor at least matching 29 team or individual stan-dards. ECU’s offense also ranked among thenation’s best statistically — finishing eighth inpassing offense, 16th in scoring offense, 25th intotal offense, fifth in offensive red zone efficiency, sixth in fourth-down conversion percentage and18th in first downs per game.

Although the unit featured 11 first-timestarters, McNeill’s offense scored a single-seasonrecord 60 touchdowns (39 pass, 21 rush). Overall,the Pirates tallied 62 touchdowns and 478 points,which also were school standards.

During his first year at ECU, McNeillenhanced his reputation as a father figure, pro-moting a family-type atmosphere and providingthe disciplined instruction on the field thatmarked his long tenure at Texas Tech.

Entering his second season as head coach of the Pirates

RUFFIN McNEILL led the Pirates to record-setting performances during his first season.

Page 9: East Carolina Football Fan Guide 2011

Before returning to his alma mater, McNeill con-cluded the 2009 season as the Red Raiders’ interimhead coach by rallying No. 21 Texas Tech to a 41-31 victory over Michigan State at the Valero AlamoBowl Jan. 2 after the dismissal of Mike Leach. Inaddition to helping the program complete the yearwith nine triumphs, McNeill’s steady hand wasresponsible for Texas Tech’s first season-endingthree-game winning streak since 1995.

The 2009 campaign marked his 10th season asa member of Leach’s staff and second full year asthe defensive coordinator. He served the final ninegames of 2007 in that role on an interim basis, before taking over officially in 2008.

A charter member of Leach’s initial coachingstaff in 2000, McNeill began his career at Texas

Tech as linebackers coach during the 2000-02 sea-sons, before taking over defensive tackles and spe-cial teams duties in 2003.

A four-year letterwinner at East Carolina from1976-80, McNeill was a three-year starter at defen-sive back and was the team captain for two seasons. He helped lead ECU to the Southern ConferenceChampionship in 1976 and an IndependenceBowl berth in 1978 — the school’s first in what isrecognized as the modern era. He graduated fromEast Carolina in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree ineducation and earned a master’s degree in second-ary counseling from Clemson in 1987.

McNeill, 52, and his wife, Erlene, have twodaughters: Olivia (20) and Renata (30). Olivia is asenior at Appalachian State.

PIRATE TRADITIONS

Beginning in 2007, the Pirates adopted anew set of flag-raising ceremonies at homefootball games.

These new ceremonies reflect the historic Piratetraditions of battle at sea when pirates would hoistthe colors of the crew’s captain to identify them-selves when attacking other sea-faring vessels.

In keeping with these Pirate traditions, EastCarolina will hoist the colors (raising the JollyRoger) just before the opening kickoff at homePirate football games. Following the end of thethird quarter, the Pirates will raise the “NoQuarter” flag to start the fourth quarter of homefootball games. The flag-raising will be accompa-nied by thrilling music, and fans are encouragedto join in the excitement. Show the opponents thePirates will give NO QUARTER by crossing yourarms in imitation of the skull and crossbones!Cheer loud, stomp your feet and show the teamthese Pirates will give no quarter!

The Pirates’ red No Quarter flag will be flownfrom the beginning of the fourth quarter through-out the remainder of the game to show that thePirates will fight on until the end, giving no mercyto their opponents.

JOLLY ROGERThe Jolly Roger refers to the “colors” or flag of apirate ship’s captain. Pirate vessels looked like allother merchant ships of that era. Once a pirate

was in striking dis-tance of a targeted ves-sel, they would declaretheir intentions byshowing their true col-ors. Various pirates had different flags, whichwere well known to those who sailed the sea. Most depictions of the Jolly Roger include a skulland crossbones, generally seen on a black field. The Jolly Roger was used to instill fear into one’senemies, and in many cases ships would surrenderto a band of pirates when this fearsome bannerwas raised.

NO QUARTERIf a ship refused to sur-render, they risked thewrath of the Pirateship’s crew. Once abattle began, the JollyRoger was lowered and replaced with a “NoQuarter” flag signifying that the Pirates wouldnow take no prisoners and give no quarter to theirenemy. The No Quarter flag often featured theskull and crossbones or other characteristic marksof the Jolly Roger. The two flags could easily bedistinguished, however, due to the No Quarterflag bearing a deep red field for the background,as opposed to the common use of black on theJolly Roger.
