IDENTITY FORM LANGUAGE SCHOOL PROFILE ESIT The École Supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT) was founded in 1957 and is part of the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris 3. Through the professional focus of its courses, ESIT is very different from language programmes. The courses it offers in more than 30 language combinations are open to students with a wide range of backgrounds who hold a Bache- lors degree or an equivalent French or foreign qualification, irrespective of the area of study. Admission is based on successful completion of an entrance exam, since proficiency in languages is a fundamental prerequi- site. French and English are mandatory in all cases. The school’s professional Masters degrees address a clear market need, both in the area of translation and conference interpreting, and in sign- language interpreting. Once successful candidates are awarded their degree from ESIT, they quickly enter the job market to work either as freelance professionals or as in-house staff for commercial and industrial groups, in the public or non-profit sectors, or for international organisations, in France and worldwide. Main programmes of study - Three professional Masters programmes with two years of study: • Conference interpreting • Editorial, economic and technical translation • Interpreting  French/French  sign  language,  and  French  sign  language/ French - A Master 2 in Translation Studies - A Doctoral programme in Translation Studies Research ESIT’s reputation among professionals and researchers in translation studies extends far beyond the borders of France. It has been built up thanks to the original approach called the Interpretive Theory of Translation developed by Danica Seleskovitch in the 1970s, which differs fundamen- tally from a purely linguistic approach to translation. The lecturer-researchers and doctoral students at the Centre de recherche  en traductologie at ESIT (CR-Trad - Research Centre in Translation Studies)  work in many different areas, including on cognitive, sociological, philoso- phical and professional aspects of translation and interpreting, as well as the history and didactics of these disciplines. They present their research at conferences and study workshops to help develop and deepen theoretical understanding in translation studies and to apply knowledge in practice. Strengths Almost all the lecturers at the School are experienced professionals in the area of translation and interpreting. As a result, students are able to work on documents and spoken communications taken from current real-world practice. The structure of the courses and teaching in small groups help foster teamwork and enable the students to gradually acquire methods and approaches used by translators, and by interpreters in spoken language or in sign language. ESIT is also a member of the European EMT and EMCI networks (European  Masters  in  Translation/in  Conference  Interpreting),  the  EFSLI  (European  Forum of Sign Language Interpreters), the CIUTI (Conférence internationale  des Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et d’Interprètes), and the FIT (International Federation of Translators). In addition, ESIT is one of the 18 translation schools worldwide selected by the United Nations to help prepare its students for the competitive examinations for language specia- list careers across the UN organisation.
