The first IT skill demonstrated is shown from a series of screen prints using Excell Spreadsheets. The resource is aimed at stage 3 students as part of the Maths Curriculum. The rationale is that it will help students make the link between simple mathematical procedures and the solving of problems involving operations. The set of questions investigates the similarities between addition and subtraction and also between multiplication and division. For instance, 20 *5 = 100 can be manipulated as 100 / 20 = 5. Removing each of the numbers from the equations in turn encourages students to apply appropriate strategies in solving problems containing the four operations. It also helps students to think in a more abstract way, which they will later need when tackling algebra. This exercise could be given to students with increasing levels of difficulty over a period of time allowing initial success and then requiring the application of the same principles to solve harder questions. Once this is mastered then the more difficult and complex written problems can be tackled from a good grounding in problem solving. These exercises could also be given to groups of students simultaneously in a type of relay race, where the first team to have all boxes ‘correct’ will be the maths champions for that week and perhaps a prize to go with it. This approach of group competition, involving the checking of answers by a ‘computerised’ teacher, should aid in increasing the enthusiasm students bring to solving mathematical problems.

The first IT skill demonstrated is shown from a series of screen prints using Excell Spreadsheets. The resource is aimed at stage 3 students as part of the Maths Curriculum.

The second IT skill demonstrated is shown from a series of screen prints using the Notebook Software. The resource is aimed at stage 3 students as part of the HSIE Curriculum investigating a cultural group.

This short presentation and video is intended as an introduction to Korea. It aims to give important but brief information on the region of Korea followed by a short video which highlights the cultural and natural qualities of Korea. Students are encouraged to see the parallels and differences between their home country and Korea. Interesting pictures are provided throughout the presentation to heighten interest and hopefully aid in discussion at the end of the lesson.

The video aims at filling in some of the questions and raising new ones from the students. The video display is best used in the middle of the day to add variety to learning and provide a launch into a deeper look at Korea later on. Aspects touched on in this presentation that would be further developed later include the Korean way of writing, the difference between democracy and communist systems of government as well as perhaps giving background to concurrent science and technology themes such as ‘electricity’ (modern developed Korea) or ‘how the weather works’ (mountainous regions interacting with rising water/gas from seas).
