GRIFFITHS FILM

. In 1908 D.W Griffiths film For Love of Goldfeatured the first ever continuity cut. Griffiths thenrealised that emotions could also be portrayed

through different camera angles and pace ofediting and it wasnt all down to the actors. Griffithswas given credit for the narrative of a film, theproduction of the first American feature film and thediscovery of the close up. This is his first directed one

SOUND

The 1927 U.S. film The Jazz Singerintroduced sound tomovies, revolutionizing the industry worldwide. Genresrequiring witty or action-oriented dialogue, such asgangster movies and screwball comedies, gained

primacy, as did extravagant musicals. The Americanstudios, including Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount,and Warner Bros., honed a "studio system" thatproduced a steady stream of films and stars forDepression-era audiences seeking escape. Americanstars of the period included James Cagney, Bette Davis,Clark Gable, Cary Grant, and Katharine Hepburn. Thesystem reached its apex in 1939, with dozens of now-classic films, including the Civil War epic Gone With theWind (1939).

Fades normally fade into black or white beforeactually going to the next seen. They rarely occur in

STORY- CENTRED EDITING AND THE

CONSTRUCTION OF MEANING

Editing and spaces have to do with closeness of theshots, for example if scene in a film were consistingof a conversation between two friends talking in a

small room, the shots they would be cuttingbetween would mostly be close-ups and mediumshots, this is to emphasise the small space andcloseness between the characters. In the openingchase scene of James Bond Casino Royale the

shots that are used are mostly long shots, extremeshots and birds-eye-views, these shots create theillusion of wide open space.

Films like Fight Club and Limitless are the perfectexample of media res, which is a type of narrativethat doesnt follow the traditional conventions of a

normal film narrative of beginning, middle and end.All of this had to do with a linear or none linearediting arrangement of events, the arrangement ofevents. The arrangements of events can be alteredfrom the traditional linear order for the reason that;

it adds mystery and a sense of wonder to the filmand also the film makes more sense this way

Cutaways are usually used when there is aconversation between people and a differentsituation is happening in the same scene and

moment, this allows the audience to receive twosets of information at once. Cutaways are used tolink inanimate objects or scenery with the currentsituation of mind. Cutaways are used very often inthe movie U-Turn by Oliver Stone

One key characteristic of soviet montage movies isthe moderation of individual characters in the

centre of attention. Single characters are exposedas members of different social classes and arerepresenting a general category of people or class.Soviet montage is important as it conveys variety incharacters and separates them, allowing the

audience to tell apart the importance of eachcharacters role in the film.
