The premiere journal for

sedation, analgesia, and
anesthesia.
Purpose of the Journal of PeriAnes-thesia Nursing: To facilitate communica-tion about and deliver education specific tothe body of knowledge unique to thepractice of perianesthesia nursing.
Target audience: The primary audiencefor JoPAN includes nurses in perianesthesiasettings: ambulatory surgery, preadmissiontesting, postanesthesia (Phases I and II),extended observation, and pain management.Additionally, the Journal provides informationof interest to professionals practicing in office-basedsettings,operatingrooms,medical/surgi-calandcriticalcarenursing,andall areaswheresedation/analgesia is utilized. Facilities and set-tings of care delivery vary and therefore it isthe practice, not the location, that determinesthe focus.
Philosophy: Perianesthesia care mustincorporate a holistic approach appreciatingthe long-term as well as the short-termneeds of the patient. Attention to specialneeds and problems affecting individualresponses to anesthesia and surgery is thecore of the specialty. Our responsibility isto assure the delivery of information andeducation pertinent to the practice.
Editorial content: The perianesthesiaspecialty requires a multidisciplinarypool of knowledge and expertise that iscontinually enhanced by new information.Therefore, the editorial content of theJournal reflects the beliefs, aims, and goalsof ASPAN by:� providing a forum for sharing profes-sional knowledge and experience relatingto management ethics, legislation, re-search, and other aspects of peri-anesthesia nursing;
� promoting a quality of nursing care thatresults from standards of care, advancedknowledge of theory and practice, andaccountability;
� providing information on a variety ofsubjects effecting the perianesthesiaprocess.
