DEFINITIONSocial media are works of user-created video, audio, text or multimedia that are published and shared in a social environment, such as a blog, wiki or video hosting site.

Social media are various activities that integrate words, images, video audio with technology and user social interaction.

According to Wikipedia social media is the democratization of knowledge and information, transforming people from content consumers to content producers.

Members are associated by one or more specific types of interdependency, such as friendship, kinship, common interests, careers, financial exchange, dislikes, relationships, beliefs, knowledge etc.

These web feeds benefit readers who want to subscribe to timely updates from favored websites or to aggregate feeds from many sites into one location.

Most new social media sites are using RSS Feeds to distribute their content.

Composed of digital audio of video files that are released episodically and often downloaded through web syndication.

Podcasting is delivered via an RSS (really simple syndication) feed.

Podcast content is typically saved in a MP3 format and can be accessed using any computer that can play media files.

Multiple individuals can inhabit and affect the same shared or multi user environment simultaneously.

In these multi-user 3D environments, the user assumes a specific role, represented on screen by an avatar.

Virtual world shared activities take place in real time and are therefore synchronous.

In the past, these activities were the exclusive purviews of traditional media producers such as professional writers, producers, journalists, licensed broadcasters and broadcast companies.

People are developing their learning and career related social media networks resulting in significant benefits to their educational and business endeavors and outcomes.

INFORMAL LEARNINGInformal learning has existed for eons and was the first method of sharing information within groups of people.

Contemporary informal learning is semi-structured and occurs in a variety of places through daily interactions and shared relationships.

Informal learning is becoming prevalent in education and the workplace due to its immediacy and effectiveness.

Informal learning encompasses successful open source social medial tools such as wikis and blogs.

Informal learning personifies the Net Gen’s desire to drive their learning rather than be passive knowledge recipients.

THE NET GENERATIONThe Net Generation born between 1977 and 1997 are the largest generation ever and will represent almost half of the workforce by 2014.

This generation believes it is “cool to be smart”. They see themselves as part of the future success of the workplace.

The Net Gens and subsequently the businesses that employ them approach learning and work collaboratively.

A social trend is emerging where people exploit technologies obtaining things they need from one another to be successful.

In order to compete with these individuals in the marketplace you must be able to successfully exploit social media.Social Media
