Educating Yorkshire  Deconstruction  Dylan Williams I will be deconstructing the documentary ‘Educating Yorkshire’, within the deconstruction I will analyse effective aspects of the documentary and why I felt it was r elevant the type of documentary I’d been researching and potentially planning for. It features documentation of a secondary school in Yorkshire and explores the trials and tribulations the teachers and pupils go through during each school day and overall provides an excellent insight into the workplace, something I will be looking at heavily throughout the project. I will especiall y looking at the use of character and the narrative this creates. We start with the tit le sequence, as you can see, it feat ures a variety of shots. The purpose of a title sequence is to summarise subject of the documentary and give the audience a t aster of what’s to come within the documentary. The first screenshot in the t op left corner features the first shot in the programme, it shows a pupil running down the stairs, the shot feels very typical of a secondary school. This theme continues as the second shot in the top right corner features pupils charging through a corridor, this once again feels very typical of a school scene and the subject matter becomes evident very early on. The use of sound is also a large feature as the sound of a school bell ringing and teachers shouting once again supports the idea that the director wants to establish the setting of a school. After these initial establi shing shots, theirs much more of an emphasis on the contents of the documentary itself as the chaotic nature of the school is presented. Firstly the bottom left shot shows a boy being reprimanded by a teacher, the director uses an extreme close shot to  present his emotions of being told off in an effective way. The last shot or bottom right shot, shows a boy pushing over a girl, this is once again relevant to the idea of the chaotic nature  being presented and foreshadowing the coming events of the documentary.

Educating Yorkshire – Deconstruction – Dylan Williams

I will be deconstructing the documentary ‘Educating Yorkshire’, within the deconstruction I

will analyse effective aspects of the documentary and why I felt it was relevant the type of

documentary I’d been researching and potentially planning for. It features documentation of a

secondary school in Yorkshire and explores the trials and tribulations the teachers and pupils

go through during each school day and overall provides an excellent insight into the

workplace, something I will be looking at heavily throughout the project. I will especially

looking at the use of character and the narrative this creates.

We start with the title sequence, as you can see, it features a variety of shots. The purpose of

a title sequence is to summarise subject of the documentary and give the audience a taster of

what’s to come within the documentary. The first screenshot in the top left corner features the

first shot in the programme, it shows a pupil running down the stairs, the shot feels very

typical of a secondary school. This theme continues as the second shot in the top right corner

features pupils charging through a corridor, this once again feels very typical of a schoolscene and the subject matter becomes evident very early on. The use of sound is also a large

feature as the sound of a school bell ringing and teachers shouting once again supports the

idea that the director wants to establish the setting of a school.

After these initial establishing shots, theirs much more of an emphasis on the contents of the

documentary itself as the chaotic nature of the school is presented. Firstly the bottom left shot

shows a boy being reprimanded by a teacher, the director uses an extreme close shot to

present his emotions of being told off in an effective way. The last shot or bottom right shot,

shows a boy pushing over a girl, this is once again relevant to the idea of the chaotic nature

being presented and foreshadowing the coming events of the documentary.

Something this is noticable throughout the documentary is the dramatization of the

characters, although it’s documenting reality, the director creates a story for the characters,

which further entices the viewer. The director tends to focus on one or more character(s) and

builds up a story around this character, in ‘Educating Yorkshire’, the exclusion of certain

pupils in the school is given a large build up with lots of shots giving off tension and

suspense as you can see in the scene above

As you can see here, a very basic shot-reverse-shot technique is used during the interaction

between the head teacher and the pupils, close shots are used to emphasise facial expressions

and the moods of the characters.

This is also a very important technique which is used throughout the documentary and these

are interviews away from the school scene. These interviews fill gaps when whats apparent in

the scene us not clear.
