Reading in the WildThe Book Whisperer’s Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits

Donalyn Miller, Susan Kelley Co-published with Editorial Projects in Education

A companion to the bestselling The Book Whisperer, Donalyn Miller’s new book Reading in the Wild explores whether or not we are truly instilling lifelong reading habits in our students and provides practical strategies for teaching “wild” reading. Based on survey responses from over 800 adult readers and classroom feedback, the authors describe, analyze, and apply the five habits of lifelong readers: • Dedicate time for reading • Self-select reading material • Share books and reading with other readers • Plan for future reading (both short and long term) • Show preferences for genres, authors, and topics.

The results of this survey caused the authors to reconsider every aspect of their instruction, from lesson design to classroom man-agement strategies and formative assessments, all with the goal of nurturing these wild reader characteristics in their students. And now they share these new designs, strategies, and approaches so that you too can develop “wild readers” in your classroom.

Each chapter contains specific mini-lessons—including a modeling piece, classroom discussion prompts, student practice, and reflec-tions. Conferring Points and Ways to Keep Track of Your Reading Life are also provided. Reading in the Wild also contains lists of rec-ommended books along with accessible strategies, ideas, tips, lesson plans, and management tools.

Packed with ideas for helping students choose their own reading material, respond to text, and build their capacity for lifelong reading, this book reflects the beauty and inspiration that Donalyn Miller brings to all she writes.

The Book WhispererAwakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

Donalyn Miller Co-published with Editorial Projects in Education

“Powerful and practical, this book will support you as you change your classroom for the better while helping you to understand how to overcome current classroom cultures where some children learn and many learn to hate reading.”—Richard L. Allington, Univ.

of Tennessee and past president of the International

Reading Assoc.

Known for her popular blog, and the Nerdy Book Club (nerdybookclub.wordpress.com), Donalyn Miller is a dedicated teacher who has yet to meet a child she couldn’t turn into a reader. Unconventional in her approach, her zeal for both reading and teach-ing inspires her students—and the results are remarkable!

No matter how far behind they may be when they enter her class-room, Miller’s students read an average of 40 books a year, achieve high scores on standardized tests, and internalize a love for books and reading that lasts long after they’ve left her class. Travel alongside the author as she leads her students to discover the ample rewards of reading and literature. Her secrets include:

• Affirming the reader in every student

• Supporting students’ reading choices

• Modeling authentic reading behaviors

• Discarding time-worn reading assignments

• Developing a classroom library with high-interest books.

Wiring the Brain for Reading Brain-Based Strategies for Teaching Literacy

Marilee B. Sprenger

Practical and winning strategies for supporting reading instruction based on exciting new findings from neuroscience

Conventional approaches to literacy instruction are not always adequate, especially for teaching reluctant readers or students who learn differently.

Researchers are now turning to brain “imaging” studies to investigate both problems in learning and the effects of particular instructional approaches. Some of the research supports and validates conven-tional literacy instruction, and some of it suggests that new types of strategies may be needed.

Noted expert Marilee Sprenger introduces teachers to those aspects of brain functioning that are most relevant to language and reading development and offers practical, brain-friendly instructional strategies that belong in every literacy classroom. In giving attention to phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension, the approach mapped out in the book aligns well with scientifically-based reading instruction but is designed to also enhance students’ motiva-tion and excitement in reading. The chapters feature strategies, games, and activities as well as classroom examples, focusing on the follow-ing topics:

• The neural connections necessary to learn to read

• The importance of the body-brain connection

• Building phonemic awareness and decoding skills

• Patterning strategies to support phonics instruction

• Neurological-based tips for building fluency

• Brain-based techniques for developing vocabulary

• Memory strategies to reinforce comprehension.

Wiring the Brain for Reading features strategies and practices that align well with Common Core State Standards and can be easily implemented in the classroom or at home.

MARILEE B. SPRENGER is an author and independent educational consultant who consults and presents nationally on topics of learning, memory, differentiated instruction and brain-based teaching practices. A former teacher, she is also adjunct professor at Aurora University and is affiliated with both the American Academy of Neurology and the Learning

and the Brain Society.

Mission PossibleHow the Secrets of the Success Academies Can Work in Any School

Eva Moskowitz, Arin Lavinia

Strategies for making the schools we need that work for all kids

“Mission Possible is a testament to what can be achieved in public education when the focus shifts to improving rigor in instruction and continuing education for teachers and principals.”—Doug

Lemov, managing director, Uncommon Schools; author,

Teach Like a Champion

How can a charter school in the middle of Harlem emerge as one of the top schools in New York City and State in just three years? The Success Academies operate from the simple notion that principals and teachers—the adults—hold the keys to educational excellence. If adults improve their performance, set the bar high enough, and believe that children can rise to their expectations, students are pro-pelled forward at lightning speed.

• The Success Academies have been featured in two popular and widely distributed documentaries, Waiting for Superman and The Lottery

• Details the Success Academies’ THINK Literacy curriculum, which produces dramatic increases in kids’ reading and writing skills.

In addition to providing strategies and lessons for school leaders and teachers, Mission Possible also serves as a guide for parents, policy-makers, and practitioners who are passionate about closing the aca-demic achievement gap.

“The authors describe their schools as places defined by ‘joyful rigor.’ Having visited a Success Academy, I can attest to that. If we are going to change the odds for children living in poverty, we need to create more opportunities to replicate what is working at places like Success Academies. This book does just that, taking the best prac-tices from the Success Academies and creating a framework for educators, parents, and policy-makers to learn from their successes.”

—Senator Michael F. Bennet, Colorado

EVA MOSKOWITZ (the founder and CEO of the Success Charter Network in Harlem) and ARIN LAVINIA offer practi-cal, classroom-tested ideas for dramatically improving teach-ing and learning. Moskowitz and Lavinia reveal how a charter school in the middle of Harlem, enrolling neighborhood children selected at random, emerged as one of the top schools in New York City and State within three years. The results of the Harlem school were on a par with public schools for gifted stu-dents and elite private schools.

“The curriculum maps in this book offer us a magnificent opportunity to rekindle the magic of learning in America’s classrooms! Teachers will be excited to bring content-rich, integrated learning experiences to life using these maps as a guide.”—Teresa Chance, Professional

Development Director for Rogers Public Schools, Arkansas

Forty-four states, plus the District of Columbia and three territories, have signed on to adopt the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The need for curriculum guides to assist teachers in helping students meet these standards has become imperative. Created by teachers, for teachers, the research-based curriculum maps in this book present a comprehensive, coherent sequence of thematic units and sample lessons for teaching the skills outlined in the CCSS for English language arts in grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Teachers can use the maps to plan their year and craft their own more detailed lesson plans. Each grade is broken down into six units that include focus standards, suggested works, sample activities and assess-ments, lesson plans, and more.

The maps address every standard in the CCSS, yet are flexible and adaptable to accommodate diverse teaching styles. Any teacher, school, or district that chooses to follow the Common Core maps can be confident that they are adhering to the standards.

Includes sample assessment rubrics, sample lessons, examples of student work, recommended books, and helpful graphic organizers.

COMMON CORE is a nonprofit organization formed in 2007 to advocate for a content-rich liberal arts education for all students in America’s K-12 schools. They believe that a student who graduates from high school without an understanding of culture, the arts, history, literature, civics, and lan-guage has been left behind. To improve education in America, they promote programs, policies, and initiatives at the local, state, and federal levels that provide students with challenging, rigorous instruction in the full range of liberal arts and sciences. They also undertake research and projects, such as the Common Core Curriculum Mapping Project, which aim to provide educators with tools that will help students to become strong readers and learners. Despite the coincidence of name, Common Core and the Common Core State Standards are not affiliated.

Paul Bambrick-Santoyo, Aja Settles, Juliana Worrell

• Five types of lessons: Read-aloud, comprehension skills, phonics, guided reading, and independent reading

• The tools you need to address the Common Core across your literacy block in a sustained, meaningful way

• Rich resources—from 40+ video clips to workshop scripts. These resources will show you what truly game-changing reading instruction looks like.

• Contains games that have been class-room-tested and proven effective.

• Offers aids that are at once challenging and a fun way to learn reading skills.

Phonics Pathways Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling

Tenth Edition

Teaches students of all ages the basics of phonics with a time-tested, foolproof method

“Phonics Pathways is the best book on the market for parents, teachers, or tutors who want to teach early reading skills. It provides research-based, explicit, systematic phonics and multi-syllable instruction in easy, self-guided lessons.”—Catherine Froggatt,

RN, Michigan State director, the

National Right to Read Foundation

This tenth edition of the best-selling book teaches reading using sounds and spelling patterns. These sounds and patterns are introduced one at a time and slowly built into words, syllables, phrases, and sentences. Simple step-by-step directions begin every lesson. New to this edition are pictures illus-trating every sound introduced, lessons in dividing multi-syllable words, and nonsense word reviews to ensure learning. Although originally designed for K-2 emergent readers, this award-winning book is also successfully being used with adolescent and adult learn-ers, as well as second language learners and students with learning disabilities. Its lay-flat pages are designed for easy photocopying.

Fifth Edition

A unique, highly effective approach to teaching reading, phonics, and vocabulary

“For reading exercises, I recommend Reading Pathways. One of my daughters has had an extra struggle with reading, and the book has helped make a noticeable improvement for her. The short stories it includes are so fun and silly that it makes the daily lessons something to look forward to.”—Jenefer

Igarashi, senior editor, The Old Schoolhouse magazine

This proven successful method for improving fluency features reading pyramids that start with one word and gradually build into short phrases and then into complete sentences of increasing complexity. Also included are mini-pyramid exercises where two words build by syllables into multisyllable words, which are then used in a sentence. The exercises in this book help beginning readers increase eye span, strengthen eye tracking, build vocabu-lary, and develop ease and fluency in reading. Progressively building up the amount of text per line removes the fear and mystique of multisyllable words and helps students build the strong vocabulary so critical for success in reading and writing.

Teach Like a Champion Field GuideA Practical Resource to Make the 49 Techniques Your Own

Doug Lemov

The companion to Teach Like a Champion—the book that took the teaching community by storm

“The 49 techniques have had a powerful impact within our district. From Teach Like a Champion we’ve gained a deeper understand-ing of teaching, and we’re excited to use this Field Guide to con-tinue our progress.”—Terry Grier, superintendent, Houston

Independent School District, TX

With the Teach Like a Champion Field Guide, teachers will have an indispensable resource that strengthens and deepens their classroom application of Lemov’s techniques. The activities are designed to accom-pany the practitioner on the journey to becoming a champion teacher. The activities span three stages: learning the techniques, preparing to use the techniques, and actual practice. Related techniques are linked, and teachers are encouraged to practice them with a partner or in a group.

In addition to developing and sharpening teaching techniques, the activities provide a proven system for assessing outcomes. The book includes 30 new video clips of champion teachers with analysis from the author. It also includes helpful charts for teachers to track their own progress and to record feedback from colleagues. Most importantly, by using the Field Guide, teachers will be prepared to successfully unlock the talent and skill in all their students.

Practice Perfect42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting BetterForeword by Dan Heath

42 Rules for Getting Better at Getting Better

“Practice Perfect will provide a recipe for organizations that are committed to their people—to helping them grow and get better in simple but powerful ways.” —Jean-Claude Brizard,

chief executive officer,

Chicago Public Schools

Practice does make perfect!“There are no shortcuts to success, whether it be in education, sports, or business. The authors of Practice Perfect provide a clear-cut, common-sense blueprint for what we all need to know to create practice habits that ensure permanent, sustainable results.”—Michael D.

Eisner, former chairman and CEO, Walt Disney Co.

We love competition, the big win, the ticking seconds of the clock as the game comes down to the wire. We watch games and cheer, but if we really wanted to see greatness we’d spend our time watching, obsess-ing on, and maybe even cheering the practice sessions instead. Practice Perfect puts the art of practice front and center. It shows that anyone, in any field, can come to appreciate that practice, not games, makes champions.

Practice Perfect is filled with illustrative examples from top-level athletes, established teachers, seasoned lawyers, and even long-time surgeons. The authors show how deliberately engineered and designed practice can revolutionize our most important activities. The how-to rules outlined in Practice Perfect can make us better in virtually every performance of life.

“Learning to practice, this book vividly illustrates, takes time and effort, trial and error. It won’t happen tomorrow. But even a small movement in the direction of more practice will reap ben-efits, in teaching and many other things we do.”—Jay Mathews, Washington Post

“While your parents may have advocated that practice makes perfect, the authors argue that what practice really does is make things permanent. The more you practice correctly and with an eye on getting better, the greater the chances that greatness at your job will become ingrained.”—USA Today

“Anyone can benefit from this book. . . . It was written for people who are committed to success and who realize that practice is an important component of getting there, but who aren’t exactly sure HOW to practice. If that sounds like you—then this is a must read.”—Small Business Trends

Making Thinking VisibleHow to Promote Engagement, Understanding, and Independence for All Learners

Ron Ritchhart, Mark Church, Karin Morrison

A proven program for enhanc-ing students’ thinking and comprehension abilities

“When thinking is made visible, learn-ing is inevitable. Making Thinking Visible invites the reader to craft a

new definition of education and presents a dramatic leap forward for education.”—Adam Scher, school principal, Bloomfield Hills

Schools, MI

Visible thinking is a research-based approach to teaching thinking, begun at Harvard’s Project Zero, that develops students’ thinking dis-positions, while at the same time deepening their understanding of the topics they study. Rather than a set of fixed lessons, visible thinking is a varied collection of practices, including thinking routines—small sets of questions or a short sequence of steps—as well as the documenta-tion of student thinking. Using this process, thinking becomes visible as the students’ different viewpoints are expressed, documented, dis-cussed, and reflected upon. Visible thinking is applicable with students at all grade levels and in all content areas.

• Helps direct student thinking and structure classroom discussion

• Includes easy-to-implement classroom strategies.

When Can You Trust the Experts? How to Tell Good Science from Bad in Education

“Parents increasingly come face-to-face with important educational decisions that they feel ill prepared to make. Whether they are choosing among schools, math programs or early inter-ventions for a learning disability, this book will help them figure out which options are backed by the best sci-ence.”—Scientific American

Each year, teachers, administrators, and parents face a barrage of new education software, games, workbooks, and professional development programs purporting to be “based on the latest research.” While some of these products are rooted in solid science, the research behind many others is grossly exaggerated. This new book, written by a top thought leader, helps everyday teachers, administrators, and family members—who don’t have years of sta-tistics courses under their belts—separate the wheat from the chaff and determine which new educational approaches are scientifically supported and worth adopting. Willingham’s work has been hailed as “brilliant analysis” by the Wall Street Journal and “a triumph” by the Washington Post.

Following up Willingham’s best-selling Why Don’t Students Like School?, this book clearly shows the constraints under which indi-viduals in the educational system operate and how the workings of cognitive science shape the way they do their jobs.

Includes concrete suggestions for changes that might be imple-mented immediately by anyone doing the job.

Teaching & Teacher Education

ERIC JENSEN is president and CEO of Jensen Learning Corp., a provider of brain-based teaching and training workshops for teach-ers, trainers, and administrators. A

former classroom teacher, Jensen is the best-selling author of more than 20 books. He has trained thousands of educators worldwide on brain-based teaching and speaks regularly at national conferences and staff professional development workshops. To learn more, go to www.jlcbrain.com.

CAROLE SNIDER is an expert in both adolescent success and adult learning. A former teacher and counselor, Snider currently serves on the state governing

board for Ohio school counselors, and she is an adjunct professor. She speaks regularly at national conferences and staff professional development workshops.

Powerful research-based strategies to turn around struggling adolescent students

The achievement gap is widening and more teens than ever are struggling in school. The latest research shows not only that brains can change, but that teachers and other providers have the power to boost students’ effort, focus, attitude, and even IQs. In this book best-selling author Eric Jensen and coauthor Carole Snider offer teacher-friendly strategies to ensure that all students graduate, become lifelong learn-ers, and ultimately are successful in school and life. Drawing on cutting-edge science, this breakthrough book reveals core tools to increase student effort, build attitudes, and improve behaviors.

• Practical, teacher-tested, and research-supported strategies that will empower educators to make last-ing and rapid changes

• Powerful academic evidence showing that every teacher can make a significant—and lasting—differ-ence in student effort, behavior, attitude, and achievement

• Specific tools for making and managing the student’s goal-seeking process and helping to develop a winner’s mindset

From the very first chapter, educators will learn how to help their struggling students become excited, lifelong learners. Jensen and Snider address a key topic among teachers—how to “hook in” and motivate students who are disengaged—and they provides practical guidance on transforming these students into lifelong learners.

Boosting Executive Skills in the ClassroomA Practical Guide for Educators

Joyce Cooper-Kahn, Margaret Foster

Students with weak executive func-tion skills need strong support and specific strategies to help them learn in an efficient manner, demonstrate what they know, and manage the daily demands of school. This book shows teachers how to do exactly

that, while also managing the ebb and flow of their broader classroom needs. This is a compilation of the most practical tools and strategies, designed to be equally useful for children with EF problems as well as all other students in the general education classroom.

Rooted in solid research and classroom-tested experience, the book is organized to help teachers negotiate the very fluid challenges they face every day; educators will find strategies that improve their class-room “flow” and reduce the stress of struggling to teach students with EF weaknesses. This important book offers teachers specific strategies to help students with EF deficits learn in an efficient man-ner, demonstrate what they know, and manage the daily demands of school. Includes reproducible forms and handouts that are available for free download.
