London

London is home to the UK’s most renowned museums – Natural History Museum, Imperial War Museum, British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum; great sporting venues - Wembley Stadium, Twickenham, Wimbledon, Lord’s; the renowned West End theatres and an unprecedented number of world famous sights and attractions.

A firm favourite with student groups, the London Eye offers breathtaking views of London from high above the River Thames. You will see Big Ben towering above the Houses of Parliament and be able to follow St. James Park as it sweeps down to Buckingham Palace. As you travel round in one of the 32 high-tech glass capsules and enjoy the London skyline, you can use the interactive touch screen guides to pick up key information on the world famous landmarks as they pass into view.

Your students will have the chance to visit a wide number of sights and attractions, and take part in specialist educational programmes, which will all provide new experiences that will stimulate and inspire them.

Our range of educational programmes and visits for students will ensure that they gain the maximum benefit from their time away and return with a real understanding of how their classroom subject studies can be applied in the real world.

The French capital really needs no introduction. Its renowned attractions – the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Champs Elysées, Sacré Coeur – are amongst the world’s best loved and most photographed, while her museums – the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Musée Picasso – are amongst the most visited and most cherished.

Paris

Paris has so much to offer visiting students, its grand boulevards and the narrower streets of the lesser-known quartiers reveal a new delight at every step. When it comes to exploring the city, consider starting at Paris’ historic island heart, the Ile de la Cité, where the exquisite church of Saint-Chapelle and the ancient prison, the Conciergerie, are all that remain of a once great palace. France’s Opal Coast region provides the ideal way to introduce students to French life, culture and language. Within just an hour’s travel from Calais it is possible to enjoy a wide range of visits and activities. You can therefore make a worthwhile tour in just a day or, of course, stay away for one or two nights and take in all the region has to offer.

Opal Coast

We base our tours around the lively and cosmopolitan city of Lille, which is ideally located for exploring the region’s main sites and neighbouring towns. In recent years, Lille’s elegant centre has been transformed and reflects a successful marriage of modern architecture and medieval Flemish buildings. The Town Hall Belfry provides the ideal vantage point for admiring the city from above. Don’t miss the old Stock Exchange building - the Vielle Bourse - a reflection of the city’s historical commercial importance. The city’s museums and theatres reflect its dynamic culture, including the Palais des Beaux Arts - France’s second largest museum after the Louvre – which houses works by Goya and Rubens, as well as the city’s most striking monument, Louis XV’s triumphal arch, Porte de Paris.

Arras, with its fine old centre, is one of the prettiest towns in northern France. Although almost destroyed in World War I, its reconstruction has been careful and stylish, and two grand arcaded square’s in the centre – Grand Place and the smaller Place des Heros – preserve their historic, harmonious character.

Better preserved and historically more interesting than Calais, Boulogne's old walled medieval town contain’s churches, museums, palaces and, of course, as the largest fishing port in France, great seafood restaurants. There are markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, so not only a true French

lifestyle experience during a visit here but an opportunity for students to practise their language skills.

From late November, the region’s Christmas Markets welcome and delight both local and international visitors.

The Opal Coast offers a wide range of educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for your students’ learning outside of the classroom:-

Cross-Curricular• Visiting attractions and free time in a new

environment with their fellow classmates builds confidence and strengthens relationships between students.

• Expanding your students’ cultural awareness makes for a valuable and memorable experience.

Nausicaa Sealife Centre - BoulogneNausicaa brings the ocean to life through its thematic exhibitions, presentations by animal carers, films and workshops. The large aquariums and terrariums, together with the centre's multimedia resource centre, give students a unique insight into the marine environment, the threats facing it, and most importantly why it should be protected. Educational tools provided by Nausicaa are available to help plan your visit.

Boulangerie “Le Fournil” Ideal for school groups this traditional, family-owned bakery located in Wierre-Effroy demonstrates baking in the old and new parts of the bakery. Each student will learn how to make a croissant and bread.

L'Escargotière du ChoquelThis 'hélicicolé' farm in St-Martin-Choquel raises grey large snails and offers visitors the opportunity to discover the art and science behind snail farming. Your tour includes a tasting!

La Chocolaterie de Beussent LachelleEnjoy a guided chocolate factory visit lasting just under an hour, covering different chocolate making techniques, as well as providing a history of chocolate cultivation and production. Tours end with a tasting and the chance to buy chocolates.

La Coupole – nr Saint- OmerThis former V2 rocket site houses a fascinating exhibition that highlights how the course of history could have been altered had the Nazi's plans been successful. A new 3D Planetarium offering an unforgettable journey into space.

The Ypres Salient and the Somme provide an invaluable experience for students, giving them the opportunity to witness and observe the Battlefields of World War One. We arrange for you and your students to visit them as part of an all-inclusive tour led by the Royal British Legion’s specially trained guides, many with direct Service experience.

Battlefields of WWI

The Western Front is synonymous with the five years of trench warfare and combat between the Allied and German armies. The Ypres Salient, the Somme, Vimy Ridge and Verdun are the most well known battlefield locations of the Western Front and this tour gives you the opportunity to visit them, learn about the battles fought and their significance and also to discover the differing experiences of the soldiers that fought at each of them.

It is estimated that almost 8 million soldiers and civilians from both sides lost their lives at the Western Front, which is why 100 years on it remains the most significant destination for tours of remembrance and World War One historical studies. During your time away, you will have the opportunity to visit battlefield sites and trenches, memorials, museums, locations related to key events or individuals, as well as both Commonwealth and German cemeteries.

Remembrance Travel in Partnership with the Royal British LegionOur Remembrance Travel brand arranges these tours in partnership with the Royal British Legion. As the national custodian of Remembrance, The Royal British Legion believes that Remembrance should be used as a means of educating people about the realities of conflict, those affected by war and the importance of peace and these tours enable this belief to become a reality. These tours are designed to bring the past to life and to give students a direct and memorable experience of history and culture, tailored to their curriculum studies and interests.

A sample from our wide range:

Passchendaele Memorial 1917 MuseumThe museum offers audio-visual presentations of the history of the Ypres Salient and the Battle of Passchendaele. There are many exhibits of equipment, armaments and personal effects. The museum has recently added a highly impressive network of outdoor reconstructed German and British trenches complete with original shelters.

The Menin Gate and the Last PostEvery evening at 8pm, the Last Post is played at the Menin Gate in Ypres. The Menin Gate is the site of the memorial to the missing of the Salient. It lists the names of 54,332 men who fell in the Salient and who have no known grave. Each evening the traffic through the Gate is halted and the Last Post is played, a haunting experience in a sombre setting.

Essex Farm CemeteryEssex Farm was the location of an Advanced Dressing Station (ADS) during the Great War, and now is the site of a CWGC Cemetery, as well as the remains of several bunkers, some of which were used by the ADS. It is probably one of the most visited sites in the Salient, principally because of its association with John McCrae. Whilst stationed at Essex Farm, in May 1915 he was moved to write the famous poem "In Flanders Fields".

Lochnagar Mine CraterThe Lochnagar mine crater is one of several which remain visible on the Western Front today. It was created by the explosion of two charges of ammonal (36,000 lbs and 24,000 lbs 60 feet apart) under a German position called Schwaben Hohe, and the crater originally measured some 300 feet across and 90 feet deep.

The Rhineland is one of the best known regions of Germany and a firm favourite with student groups. As well as the spectacular cities of Aachen, Cologne, Bonn and Koblenz, the region boasts enchanting castles, picturesque villages, medieval towns and vineyards that rise steeply on either side of the great river after which the region is named.

Rhineland

The Rhineland is an ideal destination to introduce students to German life, culture and language.

The delightful city of Aachen, once the favourite residence of Charlemagne, is renowned for the Mediterranean flair of its historical old quarter, which is filled with bubbling fountains and its famous cathedral. It is still often referred to as Aix-la-Chapelle, after Charlemagne’s great Palatine Chapel, now part of its glorious treasure-filled cathedral and a ‘must’ for all art-lovers.

Cologne’s location on the Rhine has long been key to its status as capital of the region. Visitors come not only to see the awe inspiring Dom and Romanesque churches, but also for the city’s fine museums and the Schokoladenmuseum Cologne, unsurprisingly a popular choice with students.

Located next to the Rhine, Bonn is best-known for being the birthplace of the world-famous composer Beethoven but it’s history dates back to the 1st century BC when Roman soldiers were stationed in the city and the largest known Roman fort was built at Bonn. The city’s cultural scene is thriving and the city is famous for its Museum Mile.

Koblenz is situated within the picturesque landscape of the Rhineland and is an ideal starting point for exploring the region. Its abundance of cultural monuments and historical buildings, the cosy little lanes and alleyways, and the relaxed and

happy atmosphere of its squares and river promenades make it a charming town.

The regal city of Mainz, the delightful town of Boppard located in the Loreley Valley, and Rüdesheim located at the foot of the Niederwald on the Rhine’s east bank, are also all worth considering during a visit to the region.

The Rhineland offers a wide range of educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for your students’ learning outside of the classroom:-

Cross-Curricular• Visiting attractions and free time in a new

environment with their fellow classmates builds confidence and strengthens relationships between students.

• Expanding your students’ cultural awareness makes for a valuable and memorable experience.

Modern Foreign Languages• Everyday, practical situations offer

The events of the recent past have left their mark on Berlin’s cityscape - and the city is still changing today - making it one of Europe’s most vibrant, exciting and colourful capitals. Also renowned for its vast array of historical sites, Berlin will provide an invaluable educational and cultural experience for your students.

Berlin

Berlin is home to world famous landmarks and an unprecedented number of significant historical sites such as the Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie, Berliner Dom, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Tiergarten, Schloss Charlottenburg, Olympic Stadium, remains of the Berlin Wall, to name but a few. With so much to see and do our included city travel card will enable you to make journeys across the length and breadth of the city. We then recommend you don your walking shoes so you make the most of your visits to each of the attractions.

You may well choose to begin your exploration of the city at Potsdamer Platz, the most striking example of the urban renewal that turned Berlin into the ‘New Berlin’ in the 1990s. The area today consists of the three developments known as Daimler City, the Sony Centre and the Beisheim Centre, which literally transformed the dormant wasteland where the Berlin Wall stood between east and west Berlin until 1989. The challenge of rebuilding the heart of post Cold War Berlin was no trifling matter – how to transform a desolate sandy wasteland into the new German capital’s city centre - and what can be seen today is rightly regarded as a successful compromise.

If you are travelling in December you can visit the city’s impressive range of Christmas markets.

Berlin offers a wide range of educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for your students’ learning outside of the classroom:-

Cross-Curricular• Visiting attractions and free time in a new

environment with their fellow classmates builds confidence and strengthens relationships between students.

• Expanding your students’ cultural awareness makes for a valuable and memorable experience.

Modern Foreign Languages• Everyday, practical situations offer

the opportunity to practise speaking the language through conversing with native speakers, helping to re-enforce what students have been taught in the classroom.

• Immersing your students in the culture contributes towards their learning objectives and helps to improve a student’s confidence and develop their language skills.

A sample from our wide range:

The Story of BerlinThis exhibition uses state-of-the-art multimedia technology and walk-through scenes that take visitors on a fascinating journey through 800 years of the city's history.

ReichstagFollowing German reunification in 1990, the Bundestag (German Federal Parliament) decided to make the Reichstag building the seat of Parliament in Berlin. A visit to the Reichstag is a must, a highlight includes the lift ride to the top of the building to a large viewing terrace for the breathtaking views of Tiergarten, the dome and the mirror cylinder at the centre.

The East Side GalleryThe East Side Gallery is a 1.3 km-long painted stretch of the former Berlin Wall along the Mühlenstrasse in former East Berlin. It is the largest open-air gallery in the world with over one hundred original mural paintings - a colourful tribute to what was once a divided city.

Berlin Fernsehturm (Television Tower)Dominating the city’s skyline at 368m in height, the TV Tower is the tallest building in Germany. An ideal way to look out over the entire city and gain a 360° perspective, the observation deck is at a height of 203m and the Telecafé at 207m. The Telecafé has an outer ring of tables that revolve every 30 minutes.

Checkpoint CharlieThe premier museum in Germany about the Berlin Wall and the Cold War, located just a few metres from where the famous checkpoint once stood. The museum explains the dramatic events of the Cold War and the heroic efforts of East Berlin citizens to escape to the West.

The Italian capital is truly one of the world’s greatest cities, where 2000 years of history are reflected in a treasure trove of monuments and buildings crammed with art and heritage, and where present-day life thrives and buzzes amongst the relics of an ancient civilisation.

Rome

Bustling, colourful Rome will offer your students a truly unique experience. Though a lifetime would not be long enough to explore Rome, plan your stay carefully and you will be surprised at how much you can see and do.

Our included city travel card enables journeys across the length and breadth of the city and then we recommend you don your walking shoes so you can ‘do in Rome what the Romans do’ – walk!

Head north along the Via del Corso, the city’s main thoroughfare, usually thronged with shoppers and sightseers; then head west, through the labyrinth of streets leading into Piazza Navona, the city’s most famous, liveliest and beautiful square. Within a short distance from here you’ll find yourself gazing in awe at the fabled Pantheon, a truly awe-inspiring architectural masterpiece built by the Emperor Hadrian and the city’s only architecturally intact monument from the days of the Empire.

Heading east, takes you into the heart of ‘travellers’ Rome. Here you find the city’s most famous meeting point, the fabled Spanish Steps – so called because they cascade spectacularly down into the Piazza di Spagna – and the legendary Fontana di Trevi, into which many a trio of coins has been thrown, and where the ‘beautiful people’ of Rome still gather to enjoy la dolce vita.

Rome offers a wide range of educational experiences and enrichment opportunities for your students’ learning outside of the classroom:-

Cross-Curricular• Visiting attractions and free time in a new

environment with their fellow classmates builds confidence and strengthens relationships between students.

• Expanding your students’ cultural awareness makes for a valuable and memorable experience.

Art & Design• Inspire your students with visits to

world-class galleries and to some of the most impressive architecture in the world reflected in the design of the city’s museums and iconic landmarks.

• Being able to gaze upon works of art created by famous artists and admiring the unique architecture helps to generate discussion, debate and the opportunity to sketch and improve artistic and drawing skills.

A sample from our wide range:

The Vatican Museums & Sistine ChapelA huge complex of galleries and museums, probably housing the world’s greatest collection of antiquities, showcasing painting, sculpture, frescoes, tapestries and classical antiquities including Roman, Greek and Egyptian. Combine this with the impressive Sistine chapel and Raphael's Rooms and one visit here is not likely to be enough.

St Peter’s BasilicaLocated within the walls of the Vatican, in Saint Peter's square, the interior of this cathedral includes 45 altars and has been decorated by many famous artists. Some of the most important works in the church are the Pietà by Michelangelo, the papal altar and the Throne of St. Peter, both by Bernini. The dome or cupola was designed by Michelangelo when he became chief architect in 1546.

ColosseumThis amazing amphitheatre is considered an architectural and engineering wonder and remains as a standing proof of both the grandeur and the cruelty of the Roman world.

Villa Borghese (Gallery, Museum & Park)

Villa Borghese, located in the centre of the city, is the largest public park in Rome. Created in the 1600s, this elegant park has a lake, plus a number of temples, fountains, statues and several museums. The gallery displays such masterpieces as Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, Titian's Sacred and Profane Love, Raphael's Deposition and Caravaggio's Jerome.

China offers students one of the world’s great lifetime experiences; its renowned sights, such as the Great Wall, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City in Beijing, Shanghai’s skyline and the colonial Bund district, fully justify their amazing reputations.

Beijing & Shanghai

Study Experiences has developed a unique tour programme for school and college students combining great sights with fascinating cultural visits and exclusive educational experiences. The educational benefits to the students of immersing themselves in a totally different way of life will remain with them for many years to come.

Our tour programme starts in Beijing, where you will discover the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Monument to the Peoples Heroes, Tiananmen Square, the Olympic Birds Nest Stadium and the Summer Palace. Close to the city are some of the best preserved sections of the Great Wall, truly one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights.

Your guide will also take you amongst the city’s narrow and busy backstreets, known as ‘hutongs’, where smoky temples, courtyard houses and the hectic bustle of the local markets offer a genuine glimpse of traditional Chinese life. You will travel through the hutongs by rickshaw, which provide the best way to view these traditional areas.

From Beijing, you can then choose to visit Shanghai. In cosmopolitan Shanghai, you will witness the economic growth driving the

unprecedented development taking place in China, as well historic sights such as the Bund and Yuyuan Gardens. You will be able to spend a day in delightful Suzhou with its canals and neighbouring water villages.

During Chinese term time, you can also enjoy a fascinating cultural and educational visit to a local school. This will include a tour of the school campus and then your students joining in with the Chinese students’ English classes. This opportunity to interact with their Chinese peers will undoubtedly further add to the students’ overall tour experience.

A sample from our wide range:

Tiananmen SquareTiananmen Square is the world’s largest public square, with its monolithic monuments to Communist glory, including an immense portrait of Chairman Mao. Set in the heart of the city, it also provides a poignant reminder of China’s hapless democracy movement and the 1989 demonstrations.

Temple of HeavenThe Temple of Heaven provides the most wonderful example of Ming architecture in the city. Built in the 15th century and set in its own 200 hectare park, its dominant feature is the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, which sits impressively atop a three-tiered marble terrace.

Forbidden CityThe Forbidden City is a complex of imperial palaces, which for over 500 years were home to the emperors of both the Ming and the Qing dynasties. Grand halls and courtyards gradually give way to more intimate domestic areas, giving a unique insight in to the luxurious lifestyles of the emperors.

Great WallThe Great Wall is undoubtedly one of the world’s most awe-inspiring sights. Stretching almost 4500 miles, the original wall was built over 2000 years ago, however it was during the Ming dynasty that the brickwork and stone slabs were laid.

BundShanghai’s vibrant waterfront district, where you are surrounded by classic 1930s colonial architecture, provides a spectacular view across the river of the towering skyscrapers of new Shanghai.
