The recent “CollegeCatalyst Breakfast,”which was held at the

Sharon Heights Golf and Coun-try Club on September 28thwas attended by 220 support-ers. Of great interest was an in-spirational speech given byfeatured speaker, Dr. EmmettCarson, CEO and President, Sil-icon Valley Community Foun-dation, on “The Importance ofEducation in Transforming ourRegion”.

Dr. Carson described thecurrent education system ofSan Mateo and Santa ClaraCounties as being so complexthat it was difficult for anyoneto know who is accountableand responsible for effectiveteaching and parent-school re-lationships. There are over 50school districts in these twocounties, each with its superin-tendent and executive/admin-istrative staff. The result is that

local education systems are‘very top heavy’ and need tobe simplified. The challenge isin the accomplishment of thatgoal if our children are to beeducated for their futures inthe current global economy, which requires that America, especially Silicon Valley, effec-tively teach its own youth tolevels of education and expert-ise which permit effective com-petitive superiority.

Kathryn Hanson, PhD.,founder and CEO, of ALearnFoundation just some fiveyears ago, did an analysis es-tablishing that proficiency inmath was an indicator of futurecollege success. So ALearn fo-cused on remedial math train-ing needed by students whowere not being encouraged tolearn math at existing schools.ALearn’s mission is to helpunder-represented studentsget to and succeed in college. Its academic and enrichmentprograms increase achieve-ment and thereby raise stu-dent’s aspirations for collegesuccess in their future.

ALearn’s focus has been onLatino students who becomeexposed to effective enjoyable

math learning programs whichresults in an enthusiastic andsuccessful outcome. Over4,000 students have takensummer remedial programs of-fered by ALearn. This “CollegeCatalyst Breakfast” meetingwas a joyful celebration of theirsuccess in a math accelerationprogram plus two additionalprograms which encouragedstudents to succeed by stayingin school. The two programsare “Catalyst to High School”and “Zoomz”. In the Zoomzprogram students interact withcollege students on ALearn’ssocial network for mentoringand advice regarding how toprepare for, and succeed, incollege.

Eastside Union School Dis-trict’s Overfelt (152 students)and Yerba Buena (40 students)participated successfully inthese three programs. A stu-dent panel was part of the pro-gram. The students presentedtheir personal experiences witenthusiastic feelings very well.

EO will post a link toALearn’s website to permit theentire community to view thevideos of the student panel, Dr.Emmett Carson’s comments,

and comments by Dr. KathrynHanson and Board Chair DianeFrankle, Esq. Judge for your-selves what happens when ef-fective teaching is provided toour Latino students.

One might ask “Why don’tall school districts elevate thelearning performance of theirschool’s students?” A key ele-ment is that superior teachingoccurs when the teacher ormentor takes a personal inter-est in the learning needs of astudent and is able to providepositive remedial support. Thestudents respond to the ex-pression of interest, and thechallenge to achieve excel-lence, when they are exposedto the successful learningmethods which exist today butare not uniformly made avail-able.

An essential factor to stu-dent success is the involve-ment of parents who take timeto learn and know what isgoing on with their kids whilethey are attending school. Par-ents of kids who successfullylearn are engaged and in-formed. It is the parents, asguides of their own kids, whomust insist on accountability

and effective performance byboth their student and theteaching staff of the schoolbeing attended. Parents mustbecome engaged in what isgoing on at their local school. They become active partici-pants in the local Parent-Teacher’s Association meetingswhere the parent becomes ac-quainted with their child’sschool and staff.

Getting back to ALearn’seffective success is the obser-vation that its approach is tomake learning enjoyable andfun. Its focus is on teachingcomprehensive understandingof the subject being addressed(which is algebra). Over 70% ofALearn’s students were placedin higher level math courses asan outcome of its math accel-eration program. In manyways Dr. Hanson’s efforts aresupported by the Chair ofAlearn’s Board, Ms. Diane Fran-kle, Esq., and all board mem-bers. The ALearn board isactively seeking and providingthe resources needed to fundthese enrichment programs. Ifyou are interested in learningmore about ALearn, go to theirwebsite: www.alearn.org

In December 2010, theCity adopted a SingleUse Carryout Bag ordi-

nance that bans single useplastic carryout bags. The ordi-nance will begin on January 1,2012 at which point con-sumers at all grocery and retailstores in San José will have theoption to bring their ownreusable bags or pay a mini-mum price for recycled-con-tent paper bags. Consider thefollowing to prepare for the or-dinance:

A high-quality reusablebag has the potential to re-place over 600 single-use plas-tic bags over its lifetime. Plasticbags are one of the most com-mon litter items found in creekcleanups. Paper bags are justas problematic taking 14 mil-

lion trees each year in theUnited States to produce ayear’s supply for retail use.Shopping with reusable bagsis a great way to take part in re-ducing litter and conservingnatural resources. Considerthe following to help youavoid the bag charge:

• Start shopping with areusable bag now.

• Keep reusable bags bythe door, in your car, or nearcar keys.

• Keep foldable bags inpockets, backpacks, or yourpurse.

•  Give your friends andfamily a reusable bag, and en-courage them to start shop-ping with them today.

This week the world was told thatSteve Jobs (1955-2011) had died ofpancreatic cancer. In 2009, he had

a liver transplant. He is survived by his wifeand four children. The world has lost a cre-ative innovative genius.

At the 2005 Stanford University Com-mencement ceremony, Steve Jobs statedthe following prophetic words:

“Remembering that I will be dead soonis the most important tool I encounteredwhich helped me make the most importantdecisions in life. Almost everything, all ex-pectations, all pride, all fear of embarrass-ment of failure falls away in the face ofdeath leaving only what is truly important. To die is the best way I know to avoid thetrap that you have something to lose. Youare already naked. There is no reason notto follow your heart.

“NO ONE WANTS TO DIE. EVEN PEO-PLE WHO WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN DON’TWANT TO DIE TO GET THERE. YET DEATH ISTHE DESTINATION WE ALL SHARE. No onehas ever escaped it. And that is as it shouldbe and death is the best invention of life. Itis life’s change agent. It clears out the oldto make room for the new. And right nowthe new is you (this year’s graduates).

Despite all of medical information andits technology, Steve Jobs passed on. We,who are of Mexican heritage, have tradi-tionally celebrated the “Day of the Dead(Halloween, “El Dia de los Muertos ) andthis year it would be appropriate to remem-ber Steve Jobs and contemplate his soul, hiscreative genius, and his contributions, which transformed our world by makingthe personal computer and its technologyavailable to all.

I recall, as does the EO staff, back in1987, when El Observador became the firstHispanic owned and operated publicationto use word processing and graphics tech-nology in this area to produce the productknown as EL OBSERVADOR. RebeccaValdez, the editor at that time and MonicaAmador, Director of Advertising, com-plained, “We have no time to study andmaster it! My reply was “Just go do it be-cause the MacIntosh is very user friendly. The next issue of EO was produced totallyusing the computer, which enabled the dis-carding of glues, solvents, set-up boards, etc. Now, almost anyone with a computercan access all the knowledge that isrecorded and made available on Wikipediaand other Internet sites. Access to informa-tion by anyone is now possible if you havea computer. What a change!

In his memory, we, as a communitymust address the sad state of our local ed-ucational institutions, which are notpreparing Latino youth for full participationin future endeavors. Too many of our localpublic schools do not use IT and computersto the fullest advantage possible. Notenough of IT and computer assisted educa-tion is used to prepare our youth for futuresuccess. As a community we must addressthat challenge by looking at everything andchanging it to focus on obtaining the besteducation for our youth. The use of specialprograms such as ALearn and Rocketshipcharter schools is not enough. In his mem-ory, we must begin using computerized ed-ucation programs to enhance traditionaleducation processes very soon. May SteveJobs’ soul rest in peace. May we rememberand be grateful for his innovative genius, which continues to change our world.

This week, California Attorney Gen-eral Kamila Harris announced thather office is breaking from pending

50-state bank settlement negotiations overunfair foreclosures.

Settlement negotiations between the 50attorney generals and the nation’s fivelargest banks -- Bank of America, JPMorganChase and Co., Wells Fargo, Citigroup andAlly Financial, began last fall. Beginning overallegations of robo-signing, or the practiceof bank employees notarizing or signingsworn documents without verifying or un-derstanding them, they later expanded toinclude other abuses related to mortgageservicing and foreclosure practices.

"It's a really important point to recognizethis is not just about the person who is los-ing their home, it is also about those whoare keeping their homes," said AttorneyGeneral Harris.

In 2010, nearly 4 million foreclosure fil-ings were reported. Currently there are 2.2million homes that are unable to meet therequirements of their mortgage, 55% of theforeclosures are Latino. There are 50,000homes that have been foreclosed. Thehomes that are being foreclosed not only af-fect families, but they also affect the value ofthe homes nearby and impact the commu-

nity they are in.“We applaud Attorney General Harris for

pulling out of this proposed “settlement.”We believe a thorough investigation thatleads to real relief for California homeownersis what we need,” said Richard Hopson,Chair of the Board of Alliance of Californiansfor Community Empowerment (ACCE). “Thebanks need to pay for what they have done.”

Harris has found out that there is a resid-ual issue which is that of the predators whoare taking advantage of those homeownersthat don’t know what to do or where to go.Those predators take on the form of brokecreditors or attorneys, who pretend to helpthe homeowner out of their foreclosure, butthey are charging the homeowner a fee andproducing nothing in return.

The Attorney General has proposed athree courses of action that includes litiga-tion, investigation, and reforming the sys-tem (involving forms). There will beinvestigations that are necessary to discloseand uncover the activities that led to the sit-uation, as well as potentially litigating a leg-islative fix.

“As it relates in particular to the settle-ment negotiations of the banks, I decidedthat California will chart its own course andindependent path that will include perusingthe truth,” said Harris.

Almost a month ago I was wavinga huge silk flag, celebrating Mex-ico’s Independence Day at the

PAL stadium with over 7,000 other people. It’s the second time I attended this huge

cultural event that only keeps growing. Allthroughout the day there were perform-ances. One of my favorites was the all-girlband that got the crowd dancing andsinging along with them. There were alsomariachi bands, folklorico, and a grito con-

test (when they shout Viva Mexico). There was a Culture Camp area for the

little ones, where they were offered a chanceto make red, green, and white flowers, alongwith paper flags. It’s touching to see childrenlearn about their culture during a majorevent like Mexican Independence Day. Par-ents seemed to enjoy having that time tospend with them, explaining to them whatit means and encouraging them to be proudto be Mexican American.

All along the stadium were other booths, like the anchors from local Spanish lan-

guage TV channels and members of printmedia. One of my favorite booths was Safe-way’s. I enjoy free stuff so when I realizedthat Safeway was giving away samples oftheir products, I grabbed my brother andheaded that way. I had all the samples Icould handle and even got a calendar that Iwon by playing basketball.

The Consul General of Mexico in SanJose was also giving away educationalbooks first to sixth grade level to children oranyone interested in learning about thecountry’s landscape and traditions. Some

families visited the booths, some ate tradi-tional Mexican food, and others watchedevery performance. They all had one thingin common. They were waiting patiently forthe Grito.

The moment finally came. The new con-sul Carlos Martinez Ponce presented the flagto the crowd. They remembered the heroesand sang the national anthem together, while fireworks were going off.

Parents send their children toschool hoping and trusting thatteachers and school systems are

providing a well-rounded, holistic educationthat’s personalized and supportive.

Now, thanks to an initiative by ASCD,one of America’s leading education associ-ations, anyone interested in preparingtoday’s youth for success can checkwhether schools make the grade.

Using the “Grade Your School tool(www.wholechildeducation.org/gradey-ourschool), a resource presented as part ofASCD’s Whole Child Initiative, parents andcommunities can confirm whether theirschools meet the five tenets of ASCD’sWhole Child approach to education. Thosetenets are:

1. Each student enters school healthyand learns and practices a healthy lifestyle.

2. Each student learns in an environ-ment that is safe.

3. Each student is actively engaged inlearning and connected to the school andbroader community.

4. Each student has access to person-alized learning and is supported by quali-fied, caring adults.

5. Each student is challenged academ-ically and prepared for success in college or

further study and for employment and par-ticipation in a global environment.

Elogian a HarrisRichard Hopson, Presi-

Want to get outdoors, improveyour health and socialize withfriends? It might be time to put

on your walking shoes.Regular physical activity may help control

weight and lower the risk for certain diseases. Some exercise is always better than none.

If you’re not used to exercise, walking is a greatway to become more active. Walking requiresa pair of sturdy walking shoes to get started, and proves a viable way to burn calories, buildbone density, reduce the risk of chronic dis-eases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and socialize with friends.

Not sure how to get started? Sisters To-gether: Move More, Eat Better, a national initia-tive of the Weight-control Information Network(WIN) designed to encourage Black women toexercise and eat healthier foods, offers the fol-lowing tips to get moving:

* Make it fun. Find a partner. Your walkingpartner should be able to match your speed.

* Find proper footgear. Wear shoes with

proper arch support, a firm heel and thick, flex-ible soles.

* Wear clothes that will keep you dry andcomfortable. Look for synthetic fabrics that ab-sorb sweat and remove it from your skin.

* Divide your walk into sections. Warm upby walking slowly for five minutes. Then, in-crease your speed and do a fast walk. Finally, cool down by walking slowly again for five min-utes. Do light stretching after your warm-upand cool-down.

* Try to walk as often as possible. To avoidstiff or sore muscles and joints, start gradually.Over several weeks, begin walking faster, goingfarther, and walking for longer periods of time.Aim for 30 minutes of walking a day on most, ifnot all, days of the week.

* Set goals and rewards. A goal might beparticipating in a fun walk or walking continu-ously for 30 minutes. Reward yourself whenyou meet a goal, but not with high-caloriefoods.
