Electrical phenomena, previously studied solely by using advanced- level mathematics, can now be observed through the effects of voltage transients and power oscillations. Voltage regulation, real and reactive power flow control, and system stability can also be observed in Lab-Volt laboratory exercises. The system was developed by educators to satisfy educational requirements that include industrial applica- tions of electrical power technology. The design objective was to develop a low-power (0.2 kW) transmission line system of equipment that operates like industrial equipment. Through careful attention to engineering detail, the Lab-Volt 0.2-kW Electric Power Transmission Training System has achieved this objective and in so doing, provides laboratory results that are easy to understand, with data values that are easily observed. The data, when applied to formulas, provide results that verify electrical laws rather than deny them because of large operational tolerance errors.

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Lab-Volt 0.2-kW Electric Power TransmissionTraining System, Model 8055, consists of modularhardware and corresponding courseware. Electricalphenomena, previously studied solely by using advanced-level mathematics, can now be observed through theeffects of voltage transients and power oscillations.Voltage regulation, real and reactive power flow control, and system stability can also be observed in Lab-Voltlaboratory exercises.

The system was developed by educators to satisfyeducational requirements that include industrial applica-

tions of electrical power technology. The design objectivewas to develop a low-power (0.2 kW) transmission linesystem of equipment that operates like industrialequipment. Through careful attention to engineeringdetail, the Lab-Volt 0.2-kW Electric Power TransmissionTraining System has achieved this objective and in sodoing, provides laboratory results that are easy tounderstand, with data values that are easily observed. The data, when applied to formulas, provide results thatverify electrical laws rather than deny them because oflarge operational tolerance errors.

0.2-KW ELECTRIC POWER TRANSMISSION TRAINING SYSTEMMODEL 8055

A laboratory manual guides the student through theexperiments and provides the necessary theoreticalbackground to allow students to successfully completethe educational objectives. This manual contains exper-iments that correlate with the training equipment for"hands-on" involvement with the subject matter. Theinstructor can select those experiments that will satisfythe objectives of technical courses or university programs. The flexibility of this system allows the student to use hisor her initiative during the laboratory sessions. With theguidance of an instructor, the student can gain therequired competence for successful employment.

The system's modular approach allows new equip-ment to be added to existing EMS laboratories withoutneedless duplication of equipment. There are two stan-dard module sizes: full-size, 208 mm (12.1 in) H, and half-size, 154 mm (6.1 in) H. All modules can be inserted intoa standard mobile console (Model 8110), and have plasticface-plates permanently mounted to the module chassis. The modules are constructed of heavy-gauge steel, finished in baked enamel. Symbols and diagrams specificto each module are clearly silk-screened on the plasticfaceplates. Standard color-coded safety 4 mm socketsare used to interconnect all system components.

The mobile workstation is equipped with four swivelcastors. It contains a general storage cabinet, a pulloutwork surface at conventional table or desk level, andspaces to insert the modules required for each experi-ment. Six full-size, or twelve half-size modules, plus threeadditional half-size modules can be used simultaneously. For applications requiring additional modules, a Three-Module Workstation (Model 8131) can easily be boltedon top of the mobile workstation. The modules are guidedinto position along stainless steel guide rails, and are heldsecurely in place by a locking mechanism. A modulerelease tool is supplied with each console.

All unused modules can be placed in a StorageCabinet (Model 8150). Only the necessary modules fora given experiment are placed in the console so that thestudent is not distracted by the unused instrument. Thestudent can learn step-by-step how to use eachinstrument and module.

All machines are mounted in standard-size modules. The modules are equipped with a clear plastic faceplatefitted with a chrome piano hinge. The faceplate can belowered for access to the machine, and when closed, itis secured by two captivated thumb screws.

All machines have cutaway bell housings (front andrear) to permit visual inspection of the internal construc-tion and observation of the machine during operation withthe aid of a Stroboscope (Model 8922). Externally-mounted components such as centrifugal switches, ca-pacitors, brushes, sliprings, and commutators, in additionto the exposed salient poles, squirrel cage and woundrotors, permit students to clearly determine componentfunction as well as to understand relative position, turns, and wire sizes of the machinery.

The shaft of each machine has a concave and slottedend to facilitate the use of tachometers, holding brakes, plugging switches, or inertia wheels. A geared pulley isfitted on each machine shaft to mechanically couplemachines together through the use of a Timing Belt(Model 8942). This flexible belt has molded teeth whichmesh with the geared machine pulleys. Tension for thetiming belt is provided by the idler tensioning ball bearingswhich are mounted on each machine module.

Resistance, inductance, and capacitance load com-ponents are housed in separate modules. They are de-signed to provide equal load magnitudes for all threetypes of loads. The load impedance can be varied inequal steps of unity value by switches provided in all loadmodules. These characteristics simplify calculations re-quired in the learning process.

The metering modules are designed to cover thecomplete range of required measurements with a mini-mum number of meters. The AC ammeter and voltmetermodules each contain three meters for simultaneouslymeasuring all three currents and voltages on a three-phase system. All meters are designed to sustain startingcurrents even when used on a low range. Wattmeters areinternally connected to read power directly when the inputis connected to the source and the output to the load.Protection of vulnerable meter components is ac-complished without fuses.

A separate power supply for each workstationprovides total control of the necessary power sources. This allows the student maximum use of laboratoryequipment and reduces interference with other simulta-neous laboratory experiments. The power supply moduleprovides all AC and DC power required at each station.

The speed of the machines can be measured with aDigital Tachometer (Model 8920) or an optional SpeedSensor / Tachometer (Model 8931), which is easily mount-ed on the machine.

The machines and various components of the systemare connected with flexible PVC-insulated connectingleads terminated with 4 mm safety plugs. These leadsallow safe connection of components without danger of

electrical shock, since the live parts of its plugs areconcealed and insulated in such a way that they cannotbe contacted accidentally. They come in three differentlengths; each is identified by a distinctive color. A handyrack can be attached to the console side for inventory andstorage of these leads.
