About SUNYITFounded in 1966, SUNYIT, the State University of New York Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, is New York’s public institute of technology. Students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in technology and professional studies on the SUNYIT campus, a high-tech learning environment in Marcy, N.Y., and online. Recently launched academic programs include biology, community & behavioral health, electrical & computer engineering, interdisciplinary studies, and network & computer security. SUNYIT has established a multi-million-dollar nanotechnology partnership with UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering and is planning construction of a technology complex comprising the Center for Advanced Technology and the Computer Chip Commercialization Center. The complex will bring together students and faculty in technology programs with industry activity in nanotechnology and related fields.

The electrical and computer engineering program is currently seeking ABET accreditation. Program graduates will be able to receive maximum education/experience credits towards NYS Licensure only upon ABET accreditation of the program.

The CampusLocated on hundreds of wooded and landscaped acres, the SUNYIT campus is a beautiful living and learning environment. Freshmen live in the new Oriskany Residence Hall, one of SUNYIT’s three residential complexes, and enjoy an expanding array of facilities that includes a new student center and field house. Life on campus is enriched by a wide variety of events and activities, including the Wildcats’ championship-winning intercollegiate athletics program and a weekly menu of intramurals, concerts, comedians, and more. Students can join one of the dozens of clubs and organizations or start one with a group of friends who share an interest.

The ProgramElectrical & computer engineering, one of the broadest engineering disciplines, focuses on applying the laws of physics governing electricity, magnetism and light to the development of products and services that will meet people’s needs. The field is continually evolving as engineers, recognized as key players in the technological enrichment of the future, pursue industry innovations that make advancement possible.

The program offers a balance of theory and application comprising two areas of study: liberal arts, math, science and engineering coursework; and studies in electrical engineering and computer engineering.

Students in the program are challenged to adapt to rapid changes in technology and remain at the leading edge of innovation, as they pursue:

• asolidfoundationinmathematics, physicalsciences, humanitiesandsocialsciences and the fundamentals of engineering design and analysis

• thetechnicalknowledgeandcriticalthinkingskillsrequiredfortheprofessionalpractice of electrical and computer engineering, and for seeking advanced degrees

• thedevelopmentofcommunicationskills, teamwork, lifelonglearning, andunderstanding of professional ethical and social responsibility in a global context.

ConcentrationsStudents may choose between two areas of concentration: electrical engineering (EE) and computer engineering (CoE). The EE track focuses on traditional EE disciplines including signal processing, semiconductor devices, communications, and control theory. The CoE track emphasizes digital systems design, computer architecture, networking, and systems.

LabsStudents have access to five specialized laboratories with electrical and electronic materials and tools, including function generators, power supplies, multi-meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, micro-controller demonstration boards, logic analyzers, digital probes, simulations software and more.

FacultySUNYIT faculty work closely with students and challenge them to excel. Many members of the faculty have experience in business and industry as well as academic credentials. A low student-to-faculty ratio (18:1) means faculty really get to know and work closely with students.

Career OpportunitiesGraduates of the electrical & computer engineering program have the opportunity to pursue a number of career paths in a variety of settings. The skills and knowledge developed as an undergraduate prepare students for careers in development, design, communications, production, marketing, research, and operations in a wide-range of industries that include mechanics, aeronautics, healthcare, green energy, and robotics.
