    INTRODUCTION:

    A choke is one of the vital components of

    flurocent lamp.It creats a high voltagestorage across the lamp electrodes duringstarting to indicate discharge through thelow pressure gaseous medium between theelectrodes. It also limits the current,

    during normal operation after thedischarge have been established.inbeginning conventional coil wound chokewere in use but with the change intechnology this have been started replacing

    with electronic chokes.this chokes save about35 to 40% of

    energy as compared to conventional chokesgiving better luminescence.They can glowat lower voltage compared to conventional

    coil wound choke

    Working principle A choke is an inductors .inductor have many

    applications : tuning,filtering etc.when used

    for filtering particularly in power suppliesinductors are often referred to as chokes.

    A choke in a power supply is placed in serieswith the line to add filtering.in the earlystage of power supply , say right after the

    rectifiers, there will be a lot of ACcomponent riding on the DC

    In operation ,as current increases,a chokeresists the change by storing the energy in amagnetic field;half a cycle later when the

    current starts to drop,the chokes magneticfield beings to collapse and in doingso,dumps current back into the line ,thussmoothing it and reducing the ACcomponent

    Chokes are more common in highvoltage/low current powersupplies.They were very commonlyused in vacuumtube equipment wherepower supplies had to deliver on the

    order of 300 VDC. In todays lowvoltage/high current supplies,most ofthe filtering is accomplished witcapacitors.

    Filter capacitors are placed across theline and will be large and expensive ifthey have to support high voltage.filterchokes are placed in series with the line

    and get large and expensive if they haveto carry a lot of current.
