Studentscanlearnfirsthandabouttheplightofthis endangered species and the Aquarium’spreservationefforts.

Tropical Diver is the colorful home to morethan 300 species of fish and other aquaticanimals representing Indo-Pacific reefecosystems.With164,000gallonsofwater,thePacificBarrierReefhabitatisoneofthelargestliving reef exhibits in the United States. SouthernCompanyRiverScoutisanimmersiveexperience showcasing the diversity offreshwater species around the world. SunTrust Pier 225 is home to the charismaticCaliforniasea lion.Theseplayfulpinnipeds(thenameformarinemammalsthathavefrontandrear flippers) and their dedicated trainers givestudents the chance to see training activitiesfirsthand while they learn about sea lionconservationandwhattheycandotohelp.

Upstairs in Aquanaut Adventure: A DiscoveryZone your students will navigate through aseries of activities and challenges. Along theway, theywill learnabout aquatic animals andecosystems to become a certified GeorgiaAquariumAquanaut!

AT&T Dolphin Tales features an educationalpresentation that shows your class how theincredible dolphins at Georgia Aquarium aretrained and cared for and how to protectdolphinsintheirnaturalhabitat.Inaddition,thenewly renovated 4D Funbelievable Theateremploys interactive seats and special effects

As a companion to your experience atGeorgiaAquarium, this Teacher’s Guide has beencreated to complement your classroominstruction and make the most of your schoolfield trip. It contains original, assessable,STEAM-related classroom lesson plans for youtouseandshare.

The Elementary School Teacher’s Guideincludesdynamicactivitiesandassignmentsforstudentsingradesthreethroughfive.Therearealso Teacher’s Guides for Middle School andHigh School. Each Guide is designed to beflexible and used to best meet the needs andcapabilities of your class. You know yourstudentsbetterthananyoneelse!

Following this Introduction, you will find“STEAM Stream,” a section consisting of fiveinterdisciplinary Classroom Lesson Plans, eachfeaturingagalleryyouwillvisitonyourfieldtripto the Aquarium. The lesson plans begin withinstructionpagesandanswerkeysforteachers.These include a list of the appropriate contentareas and skills addressed by the activities inthelesson.Roundingoutthelessonsareready-to-copyStudentActivityworksheetsthatcenteronkeySTEAMtopicsfeaturedonyourtour.

The first lessonplan is “ColdWaterQuest:AnUnderwater Forest.” Students will completefour activities to learn what science,engineering, history and art have to do withunderstandingtheimportanceofgiantkelp.

“River Scout: Fish Families and Folklore,” thesecondlessonplan,invitesstudentstocompareand contrast three species of catfish based onappearance and habitat. Students combinescience,literatureandarttocreateillustrationsfor one of two traditional folktales featuringcatfish.

In the next lesson, “Pier 225: Survive andThrive,”studentscomparethemaximumspeed

of a sea lion with the speeds of several othernon-fish residents at the Aquarium.Next, theywillinvestigatepossibleconnectionsbetweenElNiño and the unusual mortality events, orUMEs, threateningmarine life off the coast ofCalifornia.

“Tropical Diver: Coral in the Classroom” asksstudents to solve math problems about thePacific Barrier Reef habitat and then createcolorfulsculpturesthatreplicatecoralreefs.

The fifth lessonplan is“OceanVoyager: SizingUp Sharks.”Whale sharks take center stage inthis lesson plan that begins with a historicdescriptionof the species. Studentswill designa life-sized,two-dimensionaloutlineofawhaleshark for the classroom and compare thesegentlegiantstoothersharksattheAquarium.

Next, in “Make a Splash,” games and puzzlesrelatetothemesyouencounteronyourvisittoGeorgia Aquarium. One is a word search andthe other is a word scramble. These areexcellentactivitiesforyourbusridetoandfromthe Aquarium or to assign for extra credit asyou see fit. Under “Beneath the Waves,” thenext section in this Teacher’s Guide, you willfind facts and figures, a list of Aquariumawareness days and a timeline of Aquariumhistory.

We know how important it is to justify fieldtrips and document how instructional time isspent outside of your classroom. To that end,thisTeacher’sGuideisdirectlycorrelatedtotheCommonCoreStateStandardsforMathematicsandEnglishLanguageArts,theNextGenerationScienceStandards,theC3FrameworkforSocialStudies State Standards and the National CoreArts Standards. LessonPlan1ColdWaterQuest:AnUnderwaterForestTeacherInstructions

Giant kelpmight look likeplants your studentsseeonland,butitisactuallyakindofalgae—averylargebrownalga,Macrocystispyrifera.Itisoneof the fastestgrowingorganismsonEarth.In fact, it can grow up to one foot in a day.ImagineifthekelphabitatatGeorgiaAquariumhadlive,growingkelp.Itwouldn’ttakelongforthekelptobetallerthanthebuilding!

Instead, the kelp at the Aquarium is made ofplastic. The base is thick and flat, so it can beburiedinthebottomofthehabitat.Ifthereisalot of movement in the water, a flat sheet ofplasticisattachedtothebaseforextrastability.WhilethekelpintheColdWaterQuestgalleryis not real, the animals living there mostcertainlyare.

This unique underwater forest is home topurple sea urchins (Strongylocentrotuspurpuratus). They are a food source for an

animal featured in its own habitat in ColdWater Quest, the southern sea otter (Enhydralutris nereis). This otter is considered a“keystone species,” which means it plays animportantroleinkeepingitsecosystemhealthyandbalanced.Akelpforestecosystemisoneofthe most diverse and delicately balancedecosystemsonEarth.

Your students will complete four activities tolearnwhatscience,engineering,historyandarthave todowithunderstanding the importanceof giant kelp. Depending on the grade level ofyour students and your class schedule, theseactivitiescanbedoneasagroup(oneperday)or in teams at stations set up around yourclassroom. If youare inneedofa fifth station,provide an area with dictionaries for yourstudents to define the “Terms to Know” fromthe introduction to the Student Activity.

Giantkelpmight look likeplantsyouseeonland,butitisactuallyakindofalgae—a very large brown alga,Macrocystis pyrifera. It is one of thefastest growing organisms on Earth.Infact,itcangrowuptoonefootinaday. Imagine if the kelp habitat atGeorgia Aquarium had live, growingkelp. It wouldn’t take long for thekelptobetallerthanthebuilding!

Instead, the kelp at the Aquarium ismadeofplastic.Thebaseisthickandflat,soitcanbeburiedinthebottomof the habitat. If there is a lot ofmovement in thewater, a flat sheetof plastic is attached to thebase forextra stability.While the kelp in theAquarium’sColdWaterQuestgalleryis not real, the animals living theremostcertainlyare.

This“fish-eye”viewofatypicalNorthAmericanriver contains about 45,000 gallons of waterand is home to the three kinds of catfish youwill read about in this lesson: the channelcatfish,bluecatfishandflatheadcatfish.About3,000 known species of catfish are swimmingaroundonEarth.Thereareprobablyevenmorewaiting to be discovered since they live oneverycontinentexceptAntarctica.
