Seriously  now,  the  GOOD  news:  •  Internet  penetration:  high  •  Facebook  usage:  high  –  

most  schools  &  universities  block  it  to  reduce  server  load.  

•  Government  censorship:  Low  

•  Smart  phones  among  youth  (especially  BBM):  high  •  Most  youth  are  tri-­‐lingual:  Arabic,  English  and  

French  and  circumvent  typing  in  Arabic  by  using  roman  script:

Qualitative  Findings  

  Most  concerns  were  about  social  networking  privacy  and  how  others  will  judge  one’s  postings.  

  Security  for  online  purchases  came  in  a  distant  second  place.  

  Concerns  about  online  predators,  sex  offenders  (etc)  was  rarely  mentioned.      (While  about  half  –  46%  -­‐  of  respondents  knew  what  “sexting”  was,  only  5%  said  they  had  participated  in  it)
