Caution! It is advisable that during the firstfew sessions of operating yourscoota that the area around youis clear of obstacles andpedestrians. Before operating your Scoota, ensure the seat height has beenadjusted to your satisfaction, andthe tiller angle has been set foroptimum safety and comfort.

Mounting

When first driving the scoota, besure you and the Elite are on alevel surface. Put the key in itsslot, but leave it turned off. Standbehind the Elite seat and reachdown to the Seat Lock Lever. It islocated on the right side directlyunder the seat (can be configuredon either side of the seat: standardposition is on the right side).

Freewheel mechanismA freewheel device disengagesthe power drive to allow manualoperation (Fig. 10).The freewheel is selected bypulling up the lever which islocated at the rear of the scoota.Once it has been selected a visualdisplay will appear as shown(Fig. 11) and it will beaccompanied by a high pitchedsounding of the horn. This is asafety device to warn you that thescoota is in freewheel mode.To stop the horn sounding whilstpushing your scoota, switch off thepower using the key.To turn off the freewheel andengage the motor, simply push thelever downwards.Note: Use extreme caution in thefreewheel mode, especially onslopes/inclines.

Operating your ScootaBasic Driving

1. Make sure you are properlyseated on the Elite and that theSpeed Control Dial is turnedfully anti-clockwise towards thetortoise.Note: Reverse movement ofscooter may not occur whenSpeed Control Dial is turnedfully anti-clockwise.

2. Insert key into Key Switch andturn clockwise to on(90 degrees).

3. On tiller, use the Wig-Wag asdescribed earlier. You will gently accelerate.Release and you will gentlystop. Practice these two basicfunctions until you get used tothem.

4. Steering the Elite is easy andlogical. Just be sure toremember to get wideclearance when turning so thatthe rear wheels clear anyobstacle.

5. Shortcutting a pavementcorner can cause the backwheel to go off the pavement, causing problems, if the corneris very rough. Avoid this at alltimes by steering anexaggerated curve around theobstacle.

6. When steering in a tight spot, such as entering a doorway orwhen turning around, stop thescoota and then turn thehandlebar to where you want togo, then apply power gently. This will make the Elite turnvery sharply. It is alsorecommended that the pre-setspeed is set to a slower settingto aid control in tight spots.Exercise caution whenreversing

7. Reversing requires attention.Right thumb or left fingersoperation of the Wig-Wag willreverse the scoota. Alwayssteer in the opposite directionof the way you want to go. Themore you use the Wig-WagControl the faster you will go.Reverse speed is 50% slowerthan forward speed. If the Elitedoes not move in reverse, turnthe speed control dialcloockwise until the scootamoves gently backwards.

Operating your Scoota

Fig. 12

ESBSHandbrake

BrakingTo stop the Scoota simply releasethe Wig-Wag control, whilstkeeping your hands on thehandlebar. Two types of brakingwill automatically operate(a) Automatic regenerative

braking, which slows theScoota to a standstill and

(b) Automatic braking which willoperate a short while afterreleasing the control lever andholds the Scoota in position, even if you are on a hill. This is not instantaneous andwill engage in approx. 1/2 awheel turn.

Emergency BrakingIn the unlikely event of anunwanted movement of theScoota, using the ESBShandbrake or switching off at thekey will bring the Scoota to a stop. The Emergency SecondaryBraking System (ESBS) isoperated by using the handbrakeon the tiller (Fig. 12) which will slowthe scoota to a controlled stop.Though very effective, emergency braking is extremelyabrupt and must never be used innormal use.

Switching offThe Scoota must always beswitched off at the key.

Note: When the Scoota is not inuse for a long period of timealways disconnect the batteriesunless they are being charged.

Page 18: Elite Xs 4 Mobility Scooter

Mounting and dismounting kerbsYour Scoota is capable ofmounting and dismounting kerbsand obstacles up to 10cm (4").Remember when climbing kerbsto drive forwards and face the kerbat 90°. Stopping about 30 - 60cm(I - 2 feet) away, select a mediumto high speed setting and drive upwithout stopping. Leaningforwards will also help maximiseyour stability. (Fig. 13)

Note: Heavier users will requirehigher speed settings. To dismount a kerb, face the kerbat 90°, but select a low speedsetting. Move forward and slowlyallow your Scoota to drop gently, front wheel(s) first from the kerb. The rear stabilising wheels maymake contact with the kerb whendismounting this is normal.

Note: Low speed settings are alsorecommended when travellingdown hill, particularly in reverse. Also, reduce your speed whenturning corners. The anti-tipdevices fitted with the scoota mayinterfere with kerbs whenmounting and dismounting.

Travelling across slopesCare should be taken traversingacross a slope. (Fig. 14)

Note: Do not traverse across theface of a slope in excess of 10°(1 in 6).Disregard of this advice couldresult in your Scoota tipping.

Use on the pavementWhen using your Scoota on thepavement always be aware ofpedestrians and situations whichmight require extra care. Forexample, young children and pets.Remember, especially when drivingin public places, to drive with cautionand regard for others at all times. When manoeuvring in confinedareas, including shops, ensure theminimum speed is selected. If youleave your Scoota outside a shopensure that it does not obstructpedestrians, and remember to keepthe key with you for security. In the UK always set the speed tohalf. This is achieved by settingthe Speed Knob to position 4.

Guidance for safe operation and useHill climbing

Your Scoota is designed to travel upor down most reasonable slopes upto 14° (1 in 4) (Fig. 15), howeverboth hill climbing capability anddistance travelled between batterycharges will be adversely affectedby such things as:1. The weight of the user.2. Terrain (e.g, grass or gravel).3. Steepness of hills4. Level of charge and the age of

the batteries.5. Extremes of temperature.6. Use and weight of accessories.

TransportationYour Scoota may be disassembledquickly and simply for transportationby car. Alternatively, if you wish touse a ramp to load your Scoota intothe back of a car then:(i) Remove the seat, leaving the

seat stem in position.(ii) Lower the tiller using the

adjustment lever, to its lowestsetting. (Fig. 16).

(iii)Select the minimum speedsetting, and using extreme carestand alongside the Scootadrive it forward up the ramp, switch the Scoota off, releasethe freewheel lever at the rearof the Scoota and push theScoota fully into the car (Fig. 17).

Important: Remember to re-engage the drive unit by pushingthe freewheel lever upwards tostop the Scoota from moving.Always secure your Scootabefore transportation.

Programmable ControllerIn order to keep you safe, undercertain conditions your scootamay either not let you drive, bringyou to a safe stop, or drive at areduced speed or power.

Note: The controller can beprogrammed to alter themaximum speed, rate ofacceleration and decelerationand the rate of braking. This willhave an effect on drivingperformance. This should onlybe done by an authorisedSunrise dealer as it is possibleto program the settings outsideof the safe parameters intended.

If the scooter stops or will not drivethe reason is normally indicatedby a flashing STATUS light on thedash board.

If your scoota operates, butseems to lack top speed andpower; this indicates a flat batteryand/or the controller has beenworked so hard it is very hot andcan not supply full power.

This will happen more frequentlyand more quickly on hot days, inhilly environments and with heavydrivers.

This action is perfectly normal andmeans the controller is working tokeep itself, the motor, the batteriesand you safe.

Batteries and chargingGeneral information

Batteries are the power source foralmost all of the modern mobilityproducts available today. The design ofbatteries used in mobility products issignificantly different from the batteriesused to start a car for example. Carbatteries are designed to release a largeamount of power over a short period oftime, whilst mobility batteries (commonlycalled deep cycle batteries) release theirpower, evenly, over a long period of time. Therefore, due to the lower productionvolumes and increased technologicalrequirements, mobility batteries aretypically more expensive. Commonlytwo 12 volt batteries are used together ina mobility product giving a total voltage of24 volts. The size of the battery, (e.g. itsavailable power) is expressed in ampsper hour (e.g. 74amp/hr). The higher thenumber, the bigger the battery size, weight and, potentially, the greater thedistance you can travel.

Battery typesYour Scoota should be fitted with apair of one type of either 56 or upto74 Amp maintenance free batteries.Always be careful handling thebattery if the battery casing is broken,as corrosive acid may be leaking. The capacity at 5 hrs. discharge time= 56Ah and 74Ah.ISO 7176-4 requirement 7.11.Maximum size of batteries is 276mmx 176mm x 220mm.The batteries are interchangeableand so can be connected to eitherside. Please do not dispose batteries, always recycle.

Maintenance freeThis type of battery uses a differentmethod of carrying the electrolytewhich is totally sealed within thebattery’s outer case. As the nameimplies, no maintenance is requiredother than regular charging. As thebattery case is sealed, you cansafely transport this type of batterywithout fear of acid spilling.Furthermore, they are approved fortransportation on aircraft. It is recommended that the batteriesare always stored upright.Only use dry batteries supplied byan authorised Sunrise Dealer.

Battery careBelow is set out a battery care planfor maintenance free batteries. Thishas been agreed between SunriseMedical and the batterymanufacturers to enable you to getthe best out of your batteries. If adifferent care plan is followed, thismay result in lower than expectedperformance from your mobilityvehicle.

Note: Do not expose any partof the battery to direct heatand when charging alwaysplace on a hard surface in aroom with good ventilation. You should not charge thebatteries in outdoorconditions.

Do not smoke when in thevecinity of charging batteries.Exclude all naked flamesfrom the area.

Page 23: Elite Xs 4 Mobility Scooter

19Iss 4

Batteries and chargingMaintenance free battery careplan

1. Only use an approved SunriseMedical charger compatible withthe vehicle to be charged.

2. Charge your batteries everynight, regardless of the amountof use your mobility device hashad during the day.

3. Do not interrupt the chargingcycle.

4. If your mobility device is notrequired for use, it should remainconnected to the charger untilrequired. This will not damagethe batteries, so long as themains socket/plug is left switchedon.Do not turn the mains socketoff with the charger stillconnected to the batterieswill eventually deplete thebattery charge.

5. If you leave your vehicle for anextended period (more than 5days) first charge your batteriesfor 24 hours, then removecharger lead and disconnectthe main battery lead(s).

6. Failure to allow for recharge willdamage the batteries and canlead to shortened distancesand permanent failure.

7. Do not top up the charge ofyour batteries during the day.Wait until the evening for a fullovernight charge.

8. As a general rule, maintenancefree batteries take longer tofully charge than lead acidbatteries.Always remember to removethe plug from your scootaafter charging to preventdriving away whilst attached. The scoota can not beoperated when beingcharged.

9. The battery terminals need tobe checked regularly for signsof corrosion. If any corrosion isapparent, then clean theterminals completely (a wirebrush is ideal) and re-greasethe terminals using Vaselinepetroleum jelly, not ordinarygrease. Ensure that theterminal nuts and bolts, cableclips and exposed cable arecompletely covered with jelly.

Caution!Take care not to short circuit thebattery terminals. When usingmetal tools, exercise great care.Remove all conductive jewellery(e.g. watches, necklaces etc.)before handling exposed batteries.

10.Following all the nine pointsabove should result in ahealthier battery, greater rangefor the vehicle user and alonger life for your batteries.

Page 24: Elite Xs 4 Mobility Scooter

20 Iss 4

Batteries and chargingThe range of your vehicle

Most manufacturers of mobilityproducts state the range of theirvehicles either in the salesliterature or within the OwnersManual. The range stated sometimesdiffers from manufacturer tomanufacturer even though thebattery size is the same. SunriseMedical measure the range oftheir vehicles in a consistent anduniform manner, but variances stilloccur due to motor efficienciesand overall product load weight. The range figures are calculatedto I.S.O. Standard 7178, Part 4:Scoota Energy ConsumptionTheoretical Range. This test is carried out incontrolled conditions with new, fully charged batteries, on a leveltest surface and a user weight of75kg.The range figures statedshould be seen as a theoreticalmaximum and could be reduced ifany single, or combination, of thefollowing circumstances occur:1. User weight heavier than 75kg.2. Batteries whose age and

condition are less than perfect.3. The terrain is difficult e.g. very

hilly, sloping, muddy ground, gravel, grass, snow and ice.

4. The vehicle climbs kerbsregularly.

5. The ambient temperature isvery hot or very cold.

6. Incorrect tyre pressures in oneor more tyres.

7. Lots of start/stop driving.8. Also thick pile carpets within

the home can affect range.

All this technical informationmay seem complicated and alittle daunting, but pleaseremember, that the battery sizesavailable on your Sterling EliteXS should give sufficient rangeto cope with the majority ofcustomer’s lifestyles.
