What is Ellis Island? Ellis Island is known best as the historical gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States.

Where is Ellis Island? Located in Upper New York, between Jersey City and New York City

How do you get to Ellis Island? On a Ferry -this is how immigrants got there long ago. This is also how people of today visit this historic location.

It opened with a celebration on January 1, 1892.

Three large ships landed on the first day and 700 immigrants passed over the docks.

Almost 450,000 immigrants were processed at the station during its first year.

On June 15, 1897, a fire of unknown origin, possibly caused by faulty wiring, turned the wooden structures on Ellis Island into ashes

The Statue of Liberty is an image that symbolizes America’s immigrant heritage.

A gift from the people of France, she has watched over New York’s Harbor since 1886, and on her base is a tablet inscribed with words penned by Emma Lazarus in 1883:

“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
