Read Up!! Incoming Battle of the Books Update!By: Alyssa Andersen and Gianna Velazquez

In our last edition we introduced you to the 2nd Annual Battle of the Books competition. We talked to Mrs. Lester to update you with more information. The competition is on March 15 at 7:45am. Don’t miss it! We recorded that a total of 90 people joined Battle of the Books this year. There are also 25 groups competing in this 2nd

annual Competition. If you are wondering, the competitors have to read 10 books per group. The books are “No talking, Ramona the Pest,

Kids at Work, The Graveyard Book, Bunnicula, Orphan Train Girl, Slacker, Shiloh, and The Kite Fighters.” Make sure to read all of the

books if your in it so that you know the answers to all of the questions! We also asked Mrs. Lester why she wanted to bring Battle

of the Books back this year. She said, “After the competition last year, two students came up to her asking when are we going to do this again?” This is what encouraged her and her co-workers to have the

2nd annual Battle of the Books. Also this year during the competition Sean from the Elmwood Park library will be the Emcee (someone who hosts or is an announcer at a ceremony). For more information be

sure to take a look at the Battle of the Books website! ----> https://sites.google.com/epcusd401.org/botb-2018-2019/home

About MLK Jr.

By: Olivia Shipinski and Sarai Rivero

Martin Luther King was born on January 15th 1929, in

Atlanta Georgia. In case you didn’t know, Martin Luther King’s

name was actually Michael King but got it changed to Martin. He

was a very important man who stood up for the rights of others. In

other words, he was an activist. An activist is a person who

speaks and or shares their opinion about things that they would

like to be changed. ( about social or political topics ) It was

interesting since he went to Morehouse College, where he studied

law and medicine. The rights of African Americans were very

important to him. He constantly did things to stand up for those

people because things were segregated when he was a child. On

June 18th, 1953, MLK Jr. married a woman named Coretta Scott

King. Speaking of Coretta Scott King, she was also very

passionate about the rights of African Americans since there was

also segregation when she was a child. Martin Luther King Jr. held

a big ceremony where he spoke his mind, his I have a dream

speech. It was held on August 28th, 1963. Lastly, Martin Luther

King got assassinated April 4th, 1968 at the age of 39.

Valentine’s Day Treats! By: Xiomara Nieto and Karma Zamudio

First you have to make the rice krispie treats. So, you have to melt butter for 30 seconds, then add marshmallows. Put it in the microwave for 30 seconds or a bit longer if you need to. Then you add the rice krispies cereal and you mix it all together. After that, your rice krispie treats are done. you can take bits of the rice krispie and cut them into hearts. Then you can decorate! You can add frosting, candies, chocolate, and sprinkles or whatever else you want.

Another thing you can make is Valentine’s marshmallow pops. First, take big marshmallows and cover them all with melted chocolate on the top. Then add sprinkles before the chocolate chills and then let it sit out to completely harden. ...ENJOY!

Here is a short chart about chinese animal zodiac signs:

Chinese Zodiac SignsBy:Julissa Contreras

Do you know the

origin behind the Chinese Zodiac Signs. There is a myth that there was a swimming race to give animals a specific year. The rat and the cat were good friends but, neither could swim.So they asked the strong ox to carry them across the water, the kind ox agreed and they were taking the lead. Shortly through the race the rat pushed the cat into the water. Ox was about to win but then the rat jumped on the ox’s head and lept into first place. The first year of chinese zodiac signs was given to the rat the second year was given to the ox.Shortly after the tiger made on land he was given the third year. The horse was going to be next but a sneaky snake wiggled around the horses hooves so the snake was given the sixth year and the horse was satisfied enough to get seventh place. Shortly after the goat, monkey and rooster appeared all together on a raft. They explained how they worked together. The goat was given the eighth the monkey ninth and the rooster tenth. Next was the dog, he was late because he decided to take a bathe in the water. He was given the eleventh year. The pig was last, he stopped to eat and took a nap. He did well so he was given the last year. The cat made it to land but he was too late so he wasn't given a year. Ever since then the cat and rat have never been friends. Next to arrive was the rabbit he was given the fourth year. The dragon came on land next,he took awhile because he was helping people and the rabbit. The generosity of the dragon was repaid by giving him the fifth year.

Pennies for PatientsBY: MIA LOCKWOOD

Hello Elmwood Panthers! Student Council is doing another fundraiser. This is a learning program that raises money for the LLS, which stands for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Small boxes have been

passed out to every class, and it’s up to you to save up and raise money, whichever class raises the most money will have a party catered by Olive Garden! Student Council

also sold tickets at the Fun Fair and lunch which went to pie facing some teachers. Since this is a fundraiser dedicated to helping patients with Leukemia and Lymphoma you may be wondering what that is? Leukemia is a

cancer of your blood cells caused by a rise in the number of white blood cells in your body. On the other hand,Lymphoma is cancer

towards your lymph nodes which is a number of swellings in the lymphatic system. Donating to these awful diseases will make YOU feel

like a better person! Thank you!

There’s good restaurants, bowling, indoor skydiving, Comedy plays, and the sugar factory. You can do so much there!

#3- FOOD! You can Bake and cook new recipes and have fun with your family and friends.

#4- Make a cool board! For example you could make a bucket list or like a dream bored. Cut or print out some pictures from a magazine or an old book that nobody is going to use because you can’t waste a good book. On second thought don’t cut out a book…

Now with all this information I just gave you, you can now have some fun finally!

Video games By: Anthony Huaman and Julian. L. MunozEdit by:Max Ziuzia

Video Games has taken over the world the last year and a half. But video games were not always famous. The game that made video games on top of the world is Fortnite, which all of you probably know. But what makes Fortnite so popular? I’ll tell you that. Fortnite makes a lot of money with people always begging so they can get the latest or coolest skins. I know that this is a virtual game and really doesn’t matter of how many skins you have. But I myself have put money in the game. But this is NOT Fortnite information, this is about the best games of 2018! But I will give Epic Games credit because they produced a well game to get money. Another game that a lot of people love is Mario Kart and really all of the Mario games. In our opinion, we love the Mario series!.

The Super Mario series one of the oldest games that started in October 1988 the game Donkey KongHere’s a timeline of Mario games:

Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Donkey Kong 3, and after a couple years, We have Super Mario Maker 2 coming soon. But, one of the first video games that came out was “Pong”.

One of the saddest things that happen was the “Great Video Game Crash of 1983”. It was when arcades lost a lot of money.

Mysterious Missy

Dear Mysterious Missy, During school I usually hang out with my friends, but ever since this week started

they have been avoiding me. I don't know why and I really want to still be their friends. Can I have advice on how to be their friends again. Also, why do you think they are avoiding me?

Sincerely,Issue Fisher

Dear Issue Fisher,Well, I don’t think you should worry that much about this problem because they

might not feel comfortable about talking about something. So, they haven’t been talking to you. Also, I promise that by next week or so they will get over whatever is wrong and everything will get back to normal. Well, anyways you can be friends still by just talking about it with them and asking why haven’t you been talking to me lately. Another suggestion is that you can take a little break from them to give them time to think about the situation. You can see how you guys treat each other and next time examine it so you can fix the following problems. You can simply be friends again by saying we should just start things all over again to have a healthy friendship.

Sincerely,Mysterious Missy

Mysterious Missy

Dear Mysterious Missy,

I feel like everyone hates me and doesn't want to be my friend or leaves me out :(

Sincerely, HelpMe23

Dear HelpMe23,

I don‘t think anyone hates you. You shouldn’t think that way because I am sure many people are empathetic towards you and want to be your friend. When you are feeling this way talk to a trustful adult. When people do leave you out just ask them can I hang out with you and if they say not right now go find another friend or a group to hang out with. Also, you should consider talking it out with the people that you think are leaving you out in this situation. Most people in our school are very caring and are full of kindness so I am sure they would love to be friends and hang out with you. Send another response if my advice helped you out and if everything was back to normal or even if it is not, I will still help you out. I hope everything gets better and remember no one hates you.

Sincerely,Mysterious Missy
